Welcome to Anglesey #2

Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea

Rate this book
A moving and inspiring story about second chances and the healing power of love and friendship, set on the windswept island of Anglesey.

Arriving on the doorstep of her new cliffside cottage with its craggy, white-washed walls and chipped blue door, Jude Fitzgerald closes her eyes and listens to the cries of oystercatchers and the crash of waves in the cove below. As she steps over the threshold into the rundown old cottage, Jude feels like she’s come home. Ever since the death of her husband, Alex, she’s longed to return to the island of Anglesey, which they visited for their honeymoon only a few years before.

Resolved to hide away from the world, Jude spends her days walking the beaches alone, while at night she gazes at the stars lost in memories, until an unexpected gift from a kind neighbour offers her a lifeline. Slowly, she opens her heart to the island community, joining a class to learn the local language, going sea swimming with new friends, and rediscovering her long-forgotten love of art. Over time, Jude sees that while her old life has ended, a new one is just beginning.

But first she must let go of everything that ties her to the past – including family secrets that have passed from one generation to another and keep her from picking up the phone to her estranged mother. As events take a surprising but welcome turn, Jude learns that it’s possible to move on while keeping Alex in her heart, and that it’s never too late to follow your dreams…

Perfect for fans of Susanne O’Leary, Amanda Prowse, Liz Eeles and Sheila O’Flanagan.

4.5 shiny stars. Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea was the first book that I have read by Caroline Young. Even though it was the second book in the series Welcome to Anglesey, Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea can definitely be read as a stand-alone book. Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea was both moving and heartfelt. It covered several difficult topics that were portrayed very well and realistically. Caroline Young set her book in both London and on the tiny yet beautiful island of Anglesey located in Wales. Her vivid descriptions of the landscape and local people of Anglesey were so easy to picture and relate to. I fell in love with many of the places she described and was easily able to connect with many of the characters in Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea.

Jude ( short for Judith) Fitzgerald married Alex, the love of her life. They enjoyed a few blissful years of marriage until Alex was tragically diagnosed with cancer. Even though Jude and Alex desperately wanted to become pregnant and start a family, they were told that they were incompatible and would never be able to conceive a child. Jude had suffered more than one miscarriage. With Alex’s diagnosis, Jude realized that she and Alex would never have a child together. Then the inevitable happened. Alex died and Jude was left with her memories of him. Every inch of the home that Jude had lived in with Alex was haunted with her memories of him. Before Alex died he made Jude promise that she would return to Anglesey in the near future. It was a place they had visited on their honeymoon and fell in love with. They both had happy memories of the time they spent there. They had planned to return there again together but now Jude would have to return on her own if she wanted to keep her promise to Alex. Jude’s friends tried to be there for her through her grieving process but the house and London brought back so many memories that Jude knew she had to leave. She decided to go to Anglesey to try and heal from Alex’s death. Jude knew she required and longed for solitude. She appreciated her friends but she had to grieve in own way so she packed up her car, put her house in London on the market and headed for Anglesey.

When Jude arrived in Anglesey, a realtor helped her find a house that was available for Jude to rent and fit the requirements that Jude was looking for. The most important thing for Jude was that the house had to have a view of the sea. A home called Hedd matched all the things Jude was looking for. Its location allowed Jude to take long walks on the beach, something she didn’t realize that she needed so badly. Jude spent her evenings alone and allowed the tears to flow freely. How would she be able to go on without Alex? Then one day, a handsome stranger named Owain Pritchard knocked on Jude’s door carrying a box in his hands. He introduced himself as a local who helped other people fix, repair and build things on the island. He was carrying a Jack Russell puppy in the box and explained that this pup was the last of the litter and thought that Jude was in need of a friend. Jude accepted the puppy from this stranger and named the puppy Pip. Over the next several months, Jude came to love Hedd, the sea and the tight knit community. She made friends and slowly started to heal. Jude even enrolled in a course that taught introductory classes that helped her learn the Welsh language. Jude became torn between her love for Anglesey and the new friends she made there and the continued support and questions that her friends put forth back in London. Jude’s friends from London found it hard to understand Jude’s desire to stay in Anglesey. They wanted her to return to London. Alex’s best friend, Tom, had also expressed his feelings to Jude. He still had feelings for Jude. Jude realized that Tom wanted to make things work out between them but Jude wasn’t sure how she felt about that. She had chosen Alex over Tom all those years ago for a reason. Could she develop feelings for Tom now? Could Jude open her heart to anyone else ever again after experiencing Alex’s love?

Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea was so well written and beautifully executed in its descriptions. I really felt that I was in Anglesey with Jude and saw all the beauty she saw through her eyes. Caroline Young did an excellent job depicting Jude’s feelings of loss, grief, uncertainty and sadness. The themes of friendship, second chances, cancer, mother/daughter relationships and acceptance were prevalent throughout this book. All of my emotions were touched by this story. I admired how Jude evolved, grew and pursued the life she wanted to live despite the opinions of others. It was hard for me to stop thinking about this book even after I finished reading Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea. I recommend this book very highly.

Jude Fitzgerald had been shattered by her husband's death, only a few years after their wedding, and was still grieving. She knew Oxford wasn't helping her, so made the decision to head to where she and Alex were so happy; the small island of Anglesey. Renting the small cottage called Hedd, which she loved with a passion, she spent her days walking the beaches, long lonely nights, often crying herself to sleep - and gradually she made a few friends. A man who did some repairs on Hedd delivered her a gift - a tiny Jack Russell puppy she named Pip and they became close pals. Jude was sad at the estrangement with her mother, but couldn't see anything changing any time soon.

One of Jude's friends from Oxford, who'd just had a new baby and wasn't coping, arrived at Hedd and Jude welcomed her with open arms. Paula and baby Christos settled in and Jude took over Christos' care, while Paula rested and slept. Jude loved it. And Paula thrived. Jude could feel her life turning around, and while Alex was always there in her thoughts, she felt more at peace. Would Jude be able to make her new life in Anglesey, or would she return to Oxford?

Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea is the 2nd in the Welcome to Angelsey series by Caroline Young and I absolutely loved it! This is my first by this author, and she writes beautifully. Such description, such emotion, such passion - I was there in Wales with the difficult Welsh language as Jude tried to learn it. I could envision the waves, the birds, the different treasures that Jude collected from the beach. A divine, heartfelt and emotional read, I have no hesitation in recommending Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea highly.

With thanks to Storm Publishing via NetGalley for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

What an inspiring story! I was overwhelmed with emotions while reading Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea. Once I dove into this novel, I could not stop. My heart was caught in its grips until the end and beyond.

I felt such compassion for Jude (and her animals) and was torn by the choices this woman had to make. She was trapped in a cycle of grief and fear haunted by the memory of her late husband, Alex, who was the love of her life. When trying to move forward with all the reminders surrounding her (including her husband’s Harley Davidson motorcycle), it seemed an impossible task. So, she fled to Anglesey, a special place they had shared for their honeymoon a few years earlier. She needed to heal and figure out how to go forward.

Jude has some wonderful support, including her husband’s best friend. He tries to help but there are complications. He has carried a torch for her for many years and this creates some awkward moments: especially now that Alex is gone. Yet, knowing this, Jude still turns to him for comfort as he is a kind shoulder to cry on. But we learn he has his own lessons to learn and what he thinks he wants, may not be right for him at all. His journey is an interesting one with many twists and turns. But the truth will make itself known while rendering some unexpected emotions and outcomes.

It is easy to see that this beautiful and sensitively written heart-jarring novel was created with great insight and care by the author. She covers some difficult topics such as infertility through incompatibility and grief from loss of loved ones to cancer. This is not a light story as there are many psychological and emotional layers built into it. There are numerous sad and anguished moments but also joyful and uplifting ones. Especially when Jude experiences freedom and learns to trust in her instincts. She also realises another kindred spirit can come into her life, if she’s open to the possibility.

This is a story about relationships—romantic ones, parent and child types and friendships. There’s also a healthy dose of community spirit. And we get to see the differences between city and country life. But at the start, it is about a husband and wife torn apart by cancer. Yet the story does not end there. In fact, it just begins at this point and carries us through the trauma, the indecision, the ‘figuring out what to do now’, making mistakes and how to rectify them. It offers a pathway back to happiness, wholeness and new beginnings— presenting second chances with substance. Wrong couples paired initially, eventually find their way to the right partners for them but only after much trial and error.

Relatable characters (all excellently portrayed), realistic scenarios, authentic problems and challenging decisions fill this life-affirming story. And I cannot forget the exquisite setting that shines like gold as a backdrop across these pages. I felt I was there walking on the beaches, admiring the sunsets and breathing the salt air. I could even feel the damp cold and soaking rain at times. This atmospheric location played such a vital part in this story: it became a character of great influence on the actions and reactions of the humans and animals involved. The natural elements felt totally intertwined and inseparable from the human story.

I have to say my heart really ached for the little dog (and you will see why) and I relate to the love Jude had for him plus the longing she had for children. I was so happy things worked out positively, as it should have. True to the quote from Ecclesiastes: “For everything there is a season, a time under heaven” which is the heartbeat of this novel. This woman, like many of us, have entered the tomb of grief and battled some horrific things but managed to grasp on to the lifeline of hope. In Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea we learn that from the ashes of loss, love can blossom. When Jude begins to heal and embrace her new life, wonderful things happen.

I won’t ever forget this beautiful story that moved me to tears and then made my heart sing. It left quite an impression on me and even entered my dreams. I totally recommend this exceptional novel. 5 Exquisite Stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A lovely story although very sad at times. A young woman widowed and lonely decides to up sticks and move from Oxford to Angelsey in North Wales. Idyllic, but freezing in winter. She makes me friends and eventually everything turns out good for her. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

I struggled to get into the book at the start but it soon gained momentum. Jude is recently widowed and heads off to Wales a place that meant a lot to Alex her husband. Lots of different relationships which come and go and interact with each other. Thanks to Caroline and her publisher.

First time reading this author and loved it. The story centres around Jude, who is just about existing following the death of her beloved husband Alex. Jude decides she needs to get away from her mundane and depressing city life and she heads off to spend a few months on the Island of Anglesy, a place Alex loved and where they had holidayed together. Despite the worries of her friends she takes on the little basic cottage "Hedd" it may be run down but it's perfect for Jude, overlooking the beach, and she hopes it may awaken back up her love of painting. Jude hadn't quite realised how bad the weather in the island could get, but she feels settled, and when a local builder Owain gifts her a puppy to care for she instantly bonds with her new best friend Pip. Long walks on the beach and a basic course in Welsh find Jude making new friends and she finds it impossible to leave the Island just yet. When Tom, Alex's best friend and long admirer of Jude comes to visit, one drunken night leads to more than Jude bargained for, and he leaves knowing his love can never be reciprocated. When local builder Owain is hired to carry out works on the cottage, there's a deep connection and a special friendship develops but Owain's life is complicated and the locals warn Jude about getting too close. As Judes new life takes an unexpected turn, will she be able to stay on Anglesey or is she destined to life back in Oxford?

A lovely cosy & inspiring read, with some beautiful descriptions of Anglesey, nods to the Welsh language and the beauty of friendships old and new.

I received an ARC of this book from Netfalley and Storm Publishing in return for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC. This was not what I expected- in a very good way!

Jude is a recent widower. The story begins with Jude deciding to honor her late husbands request that she go back to Wales and visit the place that was special to them. She decides to go spend 6 months there.

A lot happens, and it focuses on her growth as an artist and person. It is also a very relational book. I love that the author showed us how Jude grew in confidence, but also stayed in touch with her close friends back home. We get to see their lives, struggles and growth throughout Jude’s journey.

The author did a wonderful job writing about Jude’s grief. This was not a “meet cute guy in Wales, fall in love, get married” type of love story. Jude makes slow progress in dealing with grief. Along the way there are challenges, surprises. She makes decisions based on how her childhood affected her- but even then, there is growth. And her new relationships are quite complicated!

I loved her new friends set that she made in Wales, and the support and love they continued to give.
Her relationship with her mother brought me to tears a few times!

I highly recommend this book. If you are looking for a deep, multilayered story, with a heroine you can relate to and root for., and writing that is poetic and beautiful at times- this is the book for you! I plan on getting other novels by this author! I was completely immersed in this story!
This is my honest review.

Stepping out of my normal choice of crime/psychological thriller reads and reviews, Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea was a total breath of fresh air. Set between Oxford and Anglesey, it follows thirty something widow Jude Fitzgerald, whose husband Alex has died of cancer. Jude's world has been totally diminished by this event, her life now tied to a job she detests, and constant memories of the life and happiness she once had before Alex was so cruelly taken from her. Feeling the need to leave Oxford, if only for a while, she sells her house, puts her furniture into storage and decides to travel up to Anglesey, a place where she was probably the most happy on trips with Alex. Renting a cottage by the sea for a few months, she hopes she has found a place where she can heal.

This is such a wonderful story. The writer captures everything so well - the sense of loss Jude feels, the 'might have beens' and the uncertain future she faces. The description of Anglesey, it's residents (some of whom become close friends) and the weather, wrap themselves so well around her daily life on the island. Tom, Alex's best friend and local builder Owain provide the love interest in this hugely entertaining story, as Jude tries to find her way in a world without her soul mate, Alex.

As I mentioned earlier, this novel is a real breath of fresh air - I absolutely loved it and it gets a big five stars from me.

Highly recommended

This is the moving, and ultimately uplifting, story of a woman dealing with the loss of her husband and finding a way to deal and try and move on. She is surrounded by so many memories in Oxford of the life they should be leading, that she decides to upsticks and move to Anglesey, a place that meant so much to her husband, to see if she can heal in new surroundings.

So she moves with her cat, Tuna, and begins a quieter life full of walks and solitude and soon finds herself amongst the locals who begin to make her feel at home. She also still has contact with old friends back home, so it's nice to see that bridge being kept with them and watching on as they deal with their own issues. People she thinks have it all together show their vulnerability too which connects with her to show that everyone has something to deal with.

There are romantic avenues explored as she tries to dip her toes back in to the dating scene, and I think it's well explored especially with the ups and downs that ensue, and still show that battle she has after being widowed of missing her husband but knowing that she needs to let people in. I really enjoyed the setting of Anglesey and the fact she found strength in the surroundings and it was a really absorbing read.

4* A beautiful book cover with a moving plot.

Deep in grief and seeking to find peace after the tragic death of her husband, Jude Fitzgerald sells her house in Oxford, puts her belongings into storage and moves to Anglesey where years ago she and her husband spent their honeymoon. Arriving in late autumn with only her cat for company, the holiday cottage Jude rents for the coming winter, whilst in a magnificent beachside location, is only suitable for summer living, it's damp, heated by a wood burning stove, and the roof leaks. Even with horizontal rain and howling gales, the cottage becomes Jude's sanctuary, enabling her to face the future whilst treasuring her past memories.

At the start of spring and the arrival of warmer weather, life in the cottage becomes more comfortable. No longer needing a refuge, Jude is drawn into the community by her new friends.

High class writing with an excellent description of the location, the believable and likeable characters all result in a thoroughly enjoyable book. Recommended.

This is such a lovely endearing book. I hope you love it as much as I did. Thank you to the publisher to Net Galley and to the author for the opportunity for review. My review opinions are my own.

This is a charming story of a young widown traumatized by the death of her beloved husband. She moves to a seaside cottage in England with her cat to experience the place they visited on her honeymoon. Amond the seaside walks, friendly locals and determination to change she begins a new life anew. The characters are richly draws as is the atmospheric description of the seaside in England and the charming cottage. I loved reading about her independence and being willing to make friends and allow new people into her life. This is utterly emotional, sweet and charming throughout the story. The reader will be please for the happy ending as you will fall for the story. Well done to the author., I look forwad to further works by the author. I highly recommend this book for all women's fiction readers.

Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea is a book that can wring out your emotions and drive you to a tissue box. The aching loneliness of the main character is palpable and the setting just highlights the wretchedness of the situation. Jude is a complex main character. Certainly, learning that you move through life even when it’s hard, is a lesson in this story.Somehow the author, Caroline Young even evokes the mournful beauty of the island with the use of the Welsh language.

Having said all that, the book is uplifting as well. It is a story about love and second chances and being given your dream. The island of Anglesey with its quiet beauty and wildlife was almost another character in the novel. Perhaps the best part of the island were the people of the island, strong and practical, full of independence and life. I fell in love with the island, the people and with Jude.

Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea by Caroline Young is a wonderfully poignant read.

This book. Wow. Grab some tissues, but be prepared to laugh out loud inappropriately as well. You will feel everything that Jude feels and you will weep for her and cheer for her. Surviving her husband's death isn't as easy as everyone around you expects it to be so Jude goes off to find a place to heal and heal she does, but in the process, she also finds herself as well as making new friends and strengthening old ones. The problem is that you can't live your life on other's timelines, hopes and dreams, but rather you must follow your own. This is part of the journey that Jude must figure out on her own while dragging us along. It is so worth the journey to read this book and experience the heartbreak and learning to not only survive, but thrive again that Jude goes through. This author really knows how to write characters that engage and enthrall as well as make you want to kick some of them. I absolutely can't wait to see what journey the author takes us on next!

After the tragic death of her husband, Jude Fitzgerald sells her house in Oxford, puts her belongings into storage and moves to Anglesey. She and her husband had spent their honeymoon there, years ago.

Jude's journey is approximately 2 years, and we see her go through various seasons and struggles in the cottage she is renting. After a rough season, the little cottage becomes a type of refuge for Jude, allowing her to heal and look forward to a different future, while still treasuring her past.

Jude meets new friends and forges new relationships. There is a slow build up to romance, but it is sweet and realistic.

I love the addition of the small animals and the life-like friendships that are made in this book. It really made her feel like I was part of the story.

Ynys Môn (Anglesey) holds a special place in my heart so I was immediately drawn to this book when I read it was set on the island. I was overwhelmed with how this atmospheric and stunning island is portrayed in the book, all its beauty and wild appeal is summed up perfectly and I now only earn to return again soon. I loved the complexity of the different characters, their secrets and their imperfections, it seemed at times some of the characters including Jude and her mum seemed older than their years which felt a bit jarring; it meant I struggled to warm completely to Jude which took some of the enjoyment out of reading the book. There were a few plot gaps that I didn't quite understand, however overall this is a story worth reading especially if you love emotional storylines, Wales or coastal settings for your books.

Surviving and thriving after grief is nearly impossible for Jude. She has traveled to the island of Anglesey on the coast of North Wales, where she and her dead husband spent their honeymoon, to find refuge. What she finds is more than she could have imagined. The author brings the island to life in the descriptions of the people who become true friends of Jude and their hard way of life. Even the angry waves and constant winter rain to its soft breezes and the smell of honeysuckle of spring were easily pictured in my mind. No, Jude could never have imagined that In this emotional journey, an island and a cottage could become a home of peace and perhaps even a second chance for her.
Thank you Netgalley and Storm Publishing for an early copy of this heart wrenching, heartwarming, emotional book. Review and comments are my opinion.

A story set on the fabulous island of Anglesey, described so well by the author who obviously loves the area. Jude Fitzgerald needs to find her own way to deal with her grief after the death of her husband. She rents a small cottage where she and her husband had their honeymoon, somewhere that brings back memories and a place to hunker down while trying to find the strength to carry on. Really well written, I loved the friendships that Jude made on the island, as well as her old friends who still supported her, even if they didn’t agree with the way she hid herself away.I liked the way the Welsh language was written into the dialogue, as well as R S Thomas’ poetry. A really good book to curl up with, to immerse yourself in and to make plans to visit the island. Recommended .

I liked that this story seemed to come full circle as Jude was overcome with grief after her husband had died. She had promised him she would visit Anglesey in North Wales again for them both. It was very emotional watching her journey with grief and life and how her promise helped to heal her grief. I liked that she ended up with a second chance at love and a chance to get to know her mother on a different level.

The cottage by the sea sounded like a beautiful place to live, open your heart, and heal. This book had many Welsh phrases translated into English which added to the Welsh cottage, the people who lived there, and the beautiful landscape.

I really enjoyed how the book ended and the epilogue. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

This book drew me in to the world of Jude. As a recent widow, we experience her grief and her healing as she finds respite at Anglesey - the sea, the fresh air, eventually the people - it all heals her slowly and surely.

I felt such a sense of peace and calm reading this even while there was turmoil in the lives of the characters. A rather predictable storyline but the writing was so descriptive that it didn't matter. I cheered for people and frowned for other people. I wanted only the best for Jude and her peace and happiness. In turn, she gave me the same thing.

I highly recommend reading this book if you have your own outer stress and inner turmoil - you will feel the sense of beauty and calm and family.

I was given this by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Grieving the loss of her husband, Jude Fitzgerald leaves Oxford and travels to Anglesey. She needs to soothe her soul and believes this is the place to do it.
Beautifully written with vivid descriptions of what sounds like a stunning island, we join Jude and feel her grief.
I found myself thoroughly invested in this book, it proved what I have always believed, there is no rhyme nor reason to grief and there is most certainly no time limit.
At many times sad, but also incredibly uplifting, this book focuses on the power of friendship, the need to be alone at times, the complicated relationships one may often encounter and hope.

This is the second book I've read from the author, and, like the first, I truly appreciated the description of Wales and the liberal use of Welsh phrases. It added a wonderful element to the story. The author made it easy to slip into the story, and I felt like I was involved. For me, I appreciated (and envied) Jude and her relationships with her friends. They felt real, thought-out, and true.

I enjoyed this, and look forward to the next installment.

I received a complimentary copy of the novel from the publisher and NetGalley, and my review is being given freely.

A young widow returns to an island off the coast of Wales. The place holds memories for her as this was where she and her late husband had their honeymoon. Detemined to get a fresh start on he life, she rents a small cottage where she hopes to begin anew. Meeting new friends and trying to move forward, she does so with the exception of one friend who will change her life again.

Going back forth from the island to Oxford England (where she is from and still has friends ) to her life on the island, the widow will grow stronger with friends from both places.

When Secrets at the Cottage by the Sea by Caroline Young begins, the main character Jude is mourning her husband's death. Struggling to get past the deep grief, she goes to one place she had promised him that she would return - Anglesey by the sea. The story is full of sorrow, recovery from grief, struggles with facing the future, and hope. Very realistic characters, imperfect, and struggling to find happiness in lives that have left them discouraged. There are some intimate scenes in the book. A copy was provided for my review, but all opinions are my own.

This novel is a well written, very descriptive book about a widow who is trying to find a way out of her depression after the loss of her husband. She sells her house in Oxford, England and rents a cottage by the sea in Anglesey, Wales. Her description of the cottage the beach, and surrounding areas really make you see just what she is experiencing as she makes new acquaintances and falls in love with the run down cottage. She is also struggling with the memories of a difficult childhood and has to come to terms with that. Thank you Storm Publishing for this enthralling novel.
