In 2017 the world had fallen to a flesh-altering virus that turned its hosts into misshapen beings with gray skin, and acidic black blood. As the virus grew into its later stages, the hosts lost their ability to see, and their deformities grew until they were almost two times that of a human in size. Frankie Silver referred to them as Strays. It had been six months since the outbreak with no signs of her brother Taylor, or her father. Though her hope had been wearing thin she still continued to survive...alone. Frankie adapted to the lifestyle, almost forgetting how to socially interact completely, until she stumbled across a small group of survivors. Without much of a choice she decided to jump head first into this new world where she was no longer by herself...fully aware that she couldn't stand to lose anyone else. Survival had always been her only priority, but now that she'd met others, those priorities might've changed. Was there hope to rebuild a life that could lead normally? Or would these people do more damage than the Strays ever could...
Book was suspenseful enough to keep me turning pages. The dialog was quick witted and very apropos for the age of the characters. It was a fun, fast read for me. I would very strongly recommend for lovers of evil vs. good. Interesting character development. A nice break if you’re just coming off of reading something heavy.
The story was great, the characters were great, and there were a few twists that I didn't see coming. Very enjoyable read, highly recommend it, and can't wait for the next one. :)
I loved this! Strays immediately sucked me in and kept me interested. The way Strays are described completely creeps me out. They mutate with time, sightless, tracking you by scent and only wanting to kill and feast. Frankie meets a crew of people that take her in and help each other survive in this infested world. The constant challenges they come to face keep me on edge, constantly on the move to keep away from large amounts of Strays, find more supplies, and avoid people lurking around trying to steal and take advantage of them. I adore how feisty Frankie can be but also how human she’s made with the author showing her vulnerable thoughts. I love the different locations their crew move around to, and following their choices they make to keep themselves alive. Between Stray attacks, ambushes, betrayal, risky missions and a bit of romance thrown in, there’s never a dull moment. I’m anxious to know what happens next and excited for book two!
