After sixteen-year-old Harriet Flynn trips over an ancient gravestone etched with strange markings in a seventeenth-century holiday village and reads the inscription, she and her friends are alarmed to wake up with supernatural powers.
Having magical abilities is fun at first, but when a series of accidents cause the group to become frightened, Harriet becomes determined to find out what’s going on. While investigating the history of the gravestone they came across that night, Harriet realises she has unwittingly awakened a centuries-old, deadly curse and she is the only one who can put an end to it – and she has less than a day.
With time running out, Harriet must find the true magic key, to save herself and the ones she loves.
I knew I wanted to be a writer ever since I was 12 years old. After school, I'd sit at the typewriter and create magical stories that were always set during modern day, but would either have a historical or mysterious twist - featuring three of the main characters who appear in Hexed (if you've never heard of a typewriter - it's an ancient type of computer!!) I started writing a version of Hexed in 2000, which began as 'Spellbound.' I wanted to combine my love for performing, magic, history and entertainment into one book. What if my characters worked as performers in a historical holiday village? What sort of supernatural adventures could occur? My time working as a Guest Host at Madame Tussauds London really gave me a taste of what life at an entertainment attraction was like. Very much how it comes across in Hexed - minus the magic and 17th century madness!
Lisa Wakely is a writer and performer from Essex born to an Anglo-Indian mother and Anglo-Burmese father. She has been writing since she was twelve years old, after spending most of her evenings reading stories from the school library. Lisa lives in Colchester with her husband, dog and two cats. She possesses an adventurous spirit that knows no boundaries, fearlessly engaging in heart-pumping activities such as skydiving and abseiling, all in the pursuit of charity. Her passion for writing and teaching performing arts is matched only by her boundless energy and unwavering determination.
The opening chapter of this story was set in 1665 and it’s absolutely filled with sorcery, mystery and so much intrigue it had me so excited to read the rest of the book.
Harriet is such a likeable 16 year old, I was smiling right away because of her little quips that made me laugh.
The story is an intriguing one that keeps you interested, I think teenagers will love the story because they’ll imagine that they could be in the same position as Harriett and her friends one day and stumble across something magical.
I enjoyed the historical facts too and I think the younger readers will because they’ll be learning without even knowing it.

Publication date 20th November 2023.
This novel consists of 21 chapters. The chapters are medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is Lisa's debut novella. She has previously written a very short children's book called 'The Day The Animals Came Out To Play' which is just 9 pages long so this would be her debut novel.

Hexed is a fantasy novel by Lisa Wakely. The novel follows 16 year old Harriet, who trips over an ancient gravestone and Harriet and her friends wake up with supernatural powers. Harriet and her friends find that having magical powers is fun at first but then her and her friends start to become frightened as accidents start to happen. She is determined to find out what is going on. She then discovers that she is the only one who can end the curse and she only has until Halloween evening, which is less than a day away. I was hooked with this novel from the very first page and kept reading until the end. I couldn't put it down. I loved the relationship between Harriet and her friends and the adventure that the go on to break the curse. Although Hexed is aimed at younger readers, it can be enjoyed at any age. I highly recommend it and I can't wait to read more by the author. 💖 Thank you to the author, Lisa Wakely, the publisher and @zooloobooktours for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
At sixteen-year-old Harriet Flynn is left to help her mother at the holiday village they ran with her father having to go away. Harriet needs to help with the reenactment of life back in the seventeenth century. After tripping over a gravestone the night before, Harriet and her friends wake in the morning with magical powers, but not sure why or how. Even though it was fun at first they soon learn it's going to be a lot harder than they think to sort out. Harriet only has day with the help of her friends to find the true key. Will this be to much for Harriet and her friends? I really enjoyed this book, even though Hexed is aimed at young adults, I think it is suitable for any age. It was a quick and easy read. My fourteen-year-old granddaughter is now reading it.
This was described as a children's paranormal, and by that I would say it is middle grade. I would put it to the same audience as the Goosebumps books. The title is not at all unique, but the story line was interesting. The mystery unraveling between finding the gravestone and the key was fun and at times the book got quite a bit scary and dark. The book was rather short, so we didn't get to know the 4 characters that run the story all that much. I felt like we got to know the ghosts better, which maybe was the point. I enjoyed it, overall; a quick read that's fun for Halloween readers or fans of YA paranormal that is clean and easy to read.
This was a super quick read and I literally inhaled it in one sitting!
First of all, I absolutely love the cover! This was so dark and creepy looking that it really drew me in before reading the blurb even!
Obviously the title hints at this being a witchy, paranormal story and the blurb confirms this, talking of curses and supernatural powers - I knew I was going to love this!!
Aimed at the YA audience, I would just say that this gets a little dark, verging on horror too at times - my kids would have been fine with it and I absolutely loved this aspect of the storyline - but I do know some on the younger end of the 9-14 age group that might be a little sensitive to this - so please do bear this in mind.
Having said this, it's the darkness that really gripped me and had me struggling to put this one down. Each chapter's title gave you a little clue to it's content and I just couldn't not look at it and then obviously had to carry on reading!
I loved the writing style which was exciting and fast-paced. The storyline also included some great facts about historical events - these were woven seamlessly into the storyline - great to get this into young minds in an engaging way.
Harriet was a great character to explore and I found her very relatable. The relationship between the friends worked well and it was nice to see their friendship develop through the book.
A brilliant read, which leaves us on a cliffhanger. I'm really excited to see if there will be a book 2 to come.
Being a fan of horror, supernatural or paranormal works I adored every minute of Hexed by Lisa Wakely. The perfect YA supernatural story with a bit of horror thrown in for good measure. I could not put it down and devoured it in one night. The writing, characters and pacing all fit perfectly to the genre.
I think the main thing I enjoyed was the characters (and plot of course!). They were believable, well rounded and probably acted a lot better than I would have done if I ended up with magic powers at sixteen! Harriet was a brilliant protagonist. I sometimes find when reading YA the female (and sometimes male) lead ends up being far too perfect while being chosen. Harriet, while awesome, does have flaws. She doesn’t always know what to do or what is going on but she tries and so do her friends. I think this is why I enjoyed it so much.
But what really brings the character’s to life is the writing which is so engaging and keeps you gripped. I honestly couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. The pacing was perfect and gave just enough to keep you guessing and wanting to know what happens without giving too much away or feeling rushed. The other thing I loved of the writing was how dark and creepy it could get at times. Honestly it made my horror loving heart happy.
If you are looking for a fun, pacy and rather dark YA supernatural horror this one is sure to tick your boxes. From memorable and well developed characters, a captivating plot and amazing writing it is a definite five stars
Let’s start by just saying how amazing this cover is! 😍
This book was a very quick and enjoyable read for me, with it being just under 150 pages and addicting I was through it in no time! The character development and the story line in this book was brilliant and I could literally feel the awkwardness between the teenagers at times. I found the set up in which they worked was a bit strange and far fetched however the drama all happened rather quickly and it all fit into the storyline. I really liked the fact that each chapter had its own title and that gave you a little teaser of what was to come and left me saying ok, one more chapter then…
The book ended on a bit of a cliff hanger and it has left me intrigued and wanting to know what comes next for Harriet and her friends… so my question to Lisa is: will there be more to come!?
If you like short, YA, supernatural and witchy vibes… then this is one for you!
As soon as I read the blurb I was immediately excited as I'm a huge fan of the supernatural and horror. I loved the opening chapter and how it started in the past, 1665, its clear to see some research has been done. Although the story is aimed at younger readers, I feel that any age can read it. I read the book in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to reading more from Lisa Wakely.
Hexed by Lisa Wakely. After sixteen-year-old Harriet Flynn trips over an ancient gravestone etched with strange markings in a seventeenth-century holiday village and reads the inscription, she and her friends are alarmed to wake up with supernatural powers. I did enjoy this book. I loved the cover. I did like Harriet Wayne Lily and Tyrone. A little dark. I did love how you saw the friendship between Harriet Wayne Tyrone and Lily grow and how they broke apart aswell. I did also like the history bit about the plaque in 1665 and the magic. Very well written. 5*.
When sixteen-year-old Harriet Flynn’s Dad has to go away due to his brother being ill, Harriet has to help her Mum with the re-enactment of life back in the seventeenth century at the holiday village they run.
Late one evening, on her way back to the castle, she falls over an ancient gravestone. That night, she has terrible dreams and sees things from a long time ago. Harriet finds out the following morning that three of her colleagues also had the strange dreams and now all four of them have magical powers!
Harriet manages to awaken an old curse, and her and her colleagues need to end it by 9pm on Halloween night.
I enjoyed this story a lot. I liked the history being taught in the story about the bubonic plague back in 1665 and how the rats were causing it to spread. This is all great for children to learn about while enjoying the story.
It was good to see the four go from colleagues to friends but also to see the fallout’s that friends do have along the way.
At times, I found the story to be dark and I did think it was a bit scary. Having said that, I do think my twelve-year-old would enjoy reading this & I’m going to get her the paperback once it’s published.
My thanks to the author and Zooloo’s Book Tours for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
This was such a fun read - I think I finished it within a few hours! This was an easy read, and I mean that in the absolute best way. It’s the type of book that would be perfect to drag me out of a slump.
This story is so interesting, we have witches, possessions, and a centuries old curse that needs to be laid to rest…. Literally.
I did kinda predict the twist, which made me feel so connected to the story - and had me rooting for the characters.
Hannah has no idea of the ramifications that lay up ahead when she trips over an ancient gravestone. A curse has been reawakened and it falls to Hannah, along with her friends to break it.
Primarily aimed at the YA audience, Hexed is a brilliant supernatural fantasy that can be enjoyed by any age, I'm fifty two and I absolutely loved it!
The plot was super addictive and the authors writing style drew me in immediately. It's moderately paced, has some great characters and a fantastic debut from Wakely.
I love a good magical, supernatural read and I loved Hexed by Lisa Wakely! When I first heard the premise of this book, I was instantly hooked. For me, this book has some Sabrina the teenage witch on steroids vibes. Teens with magic but a bit scary, and a good way. Harriet Flynn accidentally trips over an ancient gravestone in a village where she is working as part of a reenactment group. There’s a strange and inscription from the 17th century on the stone. When she shares this with her friends Lily, Tyrone and Wayne strange things start to happen that lead them on a path to destruction if they can’t find the bones of a woman burned for being a witch 400 years earlier. I really liked the character of Harriet. She wasn’t your typical heroine; in fact she’d probably be the least likely candidate in my mind. She’s quite insecure and doesn’t seem to form friendships easily. She is at odds with her mother and is really in a position she doesn’t want to be in. She does, however, begin to find her inner strength when trying to save herself, her friends and the village. I really felt for Wayne because he was doing his best to hold his life together after being kicked out by his mum. He and Harriet were opposites, but made a good pair. The story was well researched as was evident in the strong descriptions of the historical elements of the story. It is well written, pacy and engaging. The author has a talent for writing exciting, suspenseful and enjoyable stories. I hope that there will be more to come from this group of friends and Lisa Wakely. Five stars all the way.
I'm all for a witch's curse from beyond the grave, but this one I struggled with. The writing looped and repeated itself, characters didn't always have their priorities straight (why worry about impending death and doom when the pretty boy smiled at you?) The idea and the witch's tale were good, the execution of it not so much. It was too fast, not really giving time to flesh out the characters (Lily's speaking Spanish and English was stilted and stiff), the clues felt too convenient and the end twist had been predictable from the moment they got their powers. Also how old are they and when is this set? They're either teenagers or young adults, and the curse was put down in 1665 and that was either almost 400 years ago or over 400 years ago, making the book set in at least the 2060s (depending on publication date I guess?)
I persevered as I do really like witch curses, but I'm sorry. I was expecting more from this story and am disappointed. The writer has brilliant ideas and I wish them every luck in future, but this one wasn't for me
I absolutely loved Hexed, it had me gripped from the first chapter. I absolutely loved the premise of this story and all though it is set with young characters Harri being 16 it didn't feel like the characters were that young. I found the story intriguing and I loved how chapter 1 started in 1665 and then the book proceeded to be present day. I loved how all four main characters where different to each other but created a united front that brought the story together. The intertwining of Mohana and Silas made for a gripping read and the writing was brilliant and creative, the twists that happened blindsided me, I didn't expect that, but I had suspicions throughout but obviously I was wrong. I love a good witchy story and I found Hexed to be so refreshingly invented, it was so different to other witchy reads I've read. When I say I absolutely loved it, it's no exaggeration! I want a book 2!
After Harriet Flynn's father leaves to attend to his ill brother, Harriet helps her mother with their holiday village, where they reenact life in the seventeenth century. One night, Harriet stumbles upon an ancient gravestone and has strange dreams and visions of the past. The next day, she discovers three colleagues have also developed magical powers. Together, they awaken an old curse and must break it before Halloween night.
I enjoyed the story, especially the historical aspect of how the bubonic plague spread in 1665 and its impact on society. The way the story teaches history while still being entertaining is commendable.
I appreciated the character development as the colleagues became friends and dealt with the typical conflicts in friendships.
The story had some dark and scary moments that appealed to older children. Overall, this book would be great for my twelve-year-old, and I plan on purchasing the paperback once it is released.
Thank you @zooloosBT and @lisawakely for letting me be part of this tour and reviewing this book. Hexed is a young teenage genre that has supernatural goings on. The story is about Harriet who falls over an old gravestone that has strange markings on. Harriet reads the inscription, and the next day wakes up with powers. I wish this would happen to me. The story is written well, and teenagers will love to go on adventure with Harriet. I liked Harriet and her friends a lot and it was great to see her character develop through the book. The story is gripping and is set at a fast pace which I liked and can be abit dark and creepy in places that kept me hooked in the book. There is a good amount of suspense running through the book. The ending c=shocked me because I didn’t think it would leave you like that but It did. Hope there is book two. Enjoyable read, great for these darker months. 5 stars
"Hexed" is a captivating journey into a world of supernatural powers, magic and curses. The story's allure is evident from the first chapter, effortlessly pulling readers into a realm where imagination thrives. The well crafted plot unfolds seamlessly, introducing surprises that keep the narrative engaging. The vivid writing allows readers to envision scenes vividly, enhancing the overall reading experience. Beyond the mystical elements, the book explores themes of friendship, courage, and loyalty through the main characters, Harriet, Wayne, Lily and Tyrone. As their values and strengths are tested on their journey the story becomes a testament to resilience. "Hexed" is a very rewarding read that transcends generational boundaries, making it appeal to readers of all ages.
There are so many aspects to this story that I loved, with complicated friendships, adventure, and a whole heap of magic mixed in. The historical elements ad a lot to the story and whilst the story is a fantasy, the history is fact based and gives layers of education within the story. I was absolutely hooked with this magical and very twisty story and couldn't put it down. I loved the relationships between Harriet and her friends and the adventures they need to go on to break the curse. Hexed is perfect for teen readers (and slightly older ones too!) and anyone who loves a magical read. I will definitely be looking out for more books from this fabulous author!
Hexed is an enchanting blend of magic, mystery, and heart. Lisa Wakely has created a vivid world where history and the supernatural collide in the most unexpected way. Harriet is a relatable and courageous heroine, and her journey kept me turning the pages late into the night. With clever twists, rich atmosphere, and a dash of danger, this story has all the right ingredients for a gripping YA paranormal read. I especially loved how Lisa wove her performing arts background into the story, it gave the whole book a unique and authentic flair. Can’t wait to see what she writes next!
I’m a huge fan of the supernatural and witches, magic and curses so was really excited to read Hexed. The opening chapter gave me tingles and hooked me right in. I loved Harriet and the relationship between all the main characters. The awkwardness and humour of teenagers was perfectly captured. And it’s deliciously dark and scary at times. Lisa’s love of history gives this story depth and made it an immersive experience. What a great book that teenage me would have been crazy about.
Really loved the story and all the characters!! I'm all into immersive theatre so loved that it was based around a re enactment of a village in the 1600s! Also a very enjoyable read!!
This sounded so promising, the cover looked beautiful. The story itself is a great concept, I wanted so much more.
I’m not especially fussy, I appreciate a good YA read, but this is sadly not it. Even the grammar is off, the story is told from a pseudo third/first person perspective that’s completely jarring and reminds me of being picked up on it myself during my school days writing stories. It reads as third person, until “Mum” starts being name dropped, and it all felt awfully clunky from that point on, like it’s interspersed with first person thoughts from Harriet… it just reads badly.
The story moves at such pace that it doesn’t stop to explain any character motivations, background.. there’s zero development. Their behaviour doesn’t make much sense, they’re just propelling forward from A to B.
Near the end of the story, there’s the longest five minutes I’ve ever experienced since Fast and the Furious took on an airplane runway.
A shame.

Great read! Captivating throughout with historical links. Can't wait for a prequel! Found the last chapter harder to get into but all in all a fantastic read.
