When Harper Crane is nearly abducted outside the law office where she works as an administrative assistant, she’s grateful two police officers are there to rescue her. At seven months pregnant she has no idea why someone is coming after her, especially since her criminal ex-husband is dead. She wants nothing more than to return to her boring life, but the attacks against her escalate, giving her little choice but to accept Steele’s protection.
Tactical police officer Steele Delaney believes someone within Harper’s ex-husband’s criminal enterprise is responsible for attacking her. But when key evidence is found in Harper’s apartment, he tries to understand why she’s being framed. He only trusts his fellow officers, and members of the Finnegan family. Staying under the radar isn’t easy, but neither is protecting his heart. Can he keep Harper and her baby safe long enough to plan their future?
What an incredible start to a new series. This series is about Rhy and Joe's tactical team. Officers Steele Delaney and Brock Greer rescue Harper Crane from an almost abduction. Steele and Harper are on the run escaping from the bad guys chasing Harper, and the team and Harper work together to solve the case. Harper, pregnant, had to be strong as she was figuring out how to raise her baby. Steele lost his sister and girlfriend to separate tragedies and had to figure out how to move on and be able to love. This story has a lot of action, suspense, and twists and turns that will leave readers guessing until the end. The storyline and characters were great and likeable. Looking forward to Brock's story in the next installment of this series.
This is a very entertaining mystery with lots of suspense and many law enforcement characters. The story kept me interested from beginning to end. It's an enjoyable read. The audible version is enjoyable also.
Listened to this as an audiobook while driving across country. This book was intense. It seemed like every time Steele and Harper got somewhere that they thought they were safe, something would happen to force them to go on the run again. The bad guys were always one step behind and coming at them fast and furious. Great storyline with Harper being pregnant. The way Steele protects Harper and is so concerned for her and her baby was touching. The author did a great job of keeping us on our seats the whole way through. We didn't guess the ending - we thought it was someone with whom Harper worked for. Can't trust those police officers. Glad it was a happily ever after ending for Harper and Steele.

I found this book on Kindle while needing to kill some time and it was free to download and i thought hey why not? it felt like every chapter their location was compromised, to the point that all the clicheness and expected conflicts were disappointing and honestly frustrating. did it produce a good plot twist with the 'who done it' at the end? yes actually. but I'm still finding myself left with so many unanswered questions that left me so unsatisfied.
I was disappointed in this book. Besides the formulaic read started in the Finnegan series (how many times can you be "found" by the bad guys in one book, much less the whole series) I was very disappointed in the ending.
When Steele asks Harper to live at his house "in a separate bedroom" because he can't stand to be separated from her, this is not romantic, nor biblical. If the author is going to write for the Christian audience, then give good examples of character (at least at the end, after the character grows.) We are to avoid even the appearance of evil 1 Thess 5:22. The characters were already having trouble keeping their lips to themselves, why would we think this was an innocent gesture?
Even with the formula-type writing, I like Laura Scott's characters and how she tries to portray them as honorable, which is why I gave it a 3.
Wow! Laura Scott delivered a story with an an amazing plot! Her character development is unparalleled. The most important thing is that she didn't just toss a prayer in one time or simply mention God just to classify her work into the religious fiction genre but she carried it all of the way through the storyline. The theme of trusting God during our storms of life was one that will resonate with readers for all time.
Thank you, Laura Scott for using your gift to honor God.
Overall, this book worked. Some of the scenes felt a little contrived, but generally, the story of Harper and Steele flowed well enough. I wish there had been greater character development, especially for the two protagonists, and I felt that Brock’s character should’ve been more fleshed out. I was especially concerned with the almost glib way the financial aspects were (or rather weren’t) handled other than to mention them. All this to explain why it got 4 stars rather than 5. Obviously, though, I enjoyed it because I read it in one day.
Not worth your time. Skip this one. I've never read anything by this author before, so perhaps this was an exception to her style, but I found her writing choppy and boring. Too much "telling" rather than helping us to feel the characters and their emotions. Romance progression and scenes were not believable or sensible. I was also annoyed that the main characters end the story living together, albeit chastely, while she learns to feel safe again, etc. Not a great witness as Christians. As for the adventure aspect of the story, I also found it limped. Just poor writing, overall.
This is a romantic suspense story that is short, action-packed, and suspenseful. When someone attacks law office admin assistant Harper Crane outside the law office, police officers Steele and Brock are soon on the scene. The action doesn't stop as someone is trying to kill her and keep finding them wherever they try to hide. Steele and Harper, who is seven months pregnant, are drawn together. Harper's faith touches Steele in a strong way and helps them through a scary time. I listened to the story via Chirp, narrated by Alex Knox.
Definitely could have done with a good proof reader, inconsistencies, mix up between him and her, just really obvious mistakes would have helped this romance amidst the all the chasing and gunfire. The romance limped along in their minds only for such a long time that it dragged, forget the unfolding drama, the limping romance filled pages and pages, which I found to be boring. Not sure what to make of it really, just not the greatest.
‘Steele’ was thrilling. The fast-paced plot was filled with suspense, tension, action, twists, and falling in love. Stelle and Harper, the protagonists, emanated chemistry. The only drawback was the editing, especially on certain pages where Harper was described as having green eyes then several pages later, she had blue ones, and later still, she had green ones. Despite the confusion, I liked the riveting narrative.
This was a really quick read. There was lots of action and some mystery trying to figure out who was trying to kill Harper and why. I enjoyed the story. I just didn't feel a connection with the characters. There were times God was thrown in there, and it didn't flow. I felt like Steele and Harper didn't have a deep connection or really knew each other. I would have liked more character development there. But overall, it was a nice, clean, quick read.
I loved the mystery in this story, which kept me guessing all the way, but I wish I'd known it was connected to a previous series! Now I need to go back and read the Finnegan First Responders to understand who's who and in order to continue the Oath of Honor series. Ah well.
I really enjoyed the lead characters and liked their pluckiness while continually targeted by unknown, powerful assailants. It was a fun read but didn't feel incomplete though it is in short novel form.
Laura Scott did a great job on this thriller. Harper Crane is an administrative assistant for a criminal firm. She is almost been abducted as she was leaving the office. She was seven months pregnant. The police agent who was following her saved her. Police officer Steele Delaney saves her and the case begins. Very good read. Jeanette Stracner
Tanner had made,A poor choice when she married the first time. Now she was pregnant after her husband had raped her. She was divorced but was still a target of criminals who thought she knew something about her ex-husband's business. Steele was assigned to her protection.
Once again we are brought back to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to another suspense series including members of Rhythm Finnigan's team. It was another very good Laura Scott mystery. !liking forward to the next in the series.
I like that it is clean with Christian influence but the love story is ridiculous. Steele would have lost his job over starting a relationship with someone currently under his protection. It’s just too unrealistic to ignore.
Yes the book was about romance but I really enjoyed the suspenseful plot of the story. I would not have guessed at the real person behind all the attempts on her life.
So much excitement and never ending action to keep you turning the pages. Lives in danger at every turn. Difficulty in finding a safe place. Join all the complexities you could ever imagine.
Story was great, characters very believable. Good clean story no cussing, or sex. A lot of conversations about praying and faith. Looking for more books from this author.
Good thriller, less romance . The religious aspect is different from most books I’ve read lately and tbh it was more focused on that than the plot. I didn’t enjoy it enough to read the next book. However, I was able to finish this one.
I enjoyed the Finnegan series and know that I will enjoy this one as well. Fun to see old characters show up. A great read, a mystery I did not figure out!
This is a gripping and romantic thriller that will captivate fans of suspenseful stories with strong heroines, dashing heroes, and a healthy dose of action, perfect for readers who crave a stirring ride with a sweet and tender love story at its core.
I thought I had the bad guy identified early in the beginning and I was right but for the wrong crime. The heroes and heroines always "fall in love" so fast. My, oh, my. A clean book and no problem with language. Lots of action, too.
I enjoyed this sweet, simple story. It did keep me guessing about who was after Harper. It was a good mystery. I also think Steele and Harper's romance was set up ok. A bit realistic and not too far-fetched.
This book definitely held my attention. Something was always about to happen. It was exciting, sweet, and surprising! I never guessed the ending. I picked the wrong guy.
This was an exciting, action packed story. It kept me guessing. It really could use a good editor. Found several errors such as Harper getting in a car after it said she had already gotten in the car, extra words etc. It was worth reading.
Great start to a new series. Full of non stop suspense and drama, and great and likable characters. I was kept guessing who the bad guy was, and was surprised when that was revealed.
