What's the saying… the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else? How about three someones?
I didn't expect the hot stranger who helped me face my ex to end up being an NHL player and be interested in me. I really didn't expect his two teammates to also be interested in me.
These men look at me like I'm everything they've ever dreamed of. Now I have all three men wanting my attention. And I want them all.
Unfortunately, it might not be that simple. When it comes down to it, the hot nights, whispered words, and strong emotions might not be enough. I just hope that at the end of it all it will have been worth it.
Madi is 20 something trying to figure out what “adulting” is. Madi has been writing stories since she was a teenager she continues to express all her emotions in her writing. She’s also an avid reader. Madi lives in the PNW where she attended college after moving from the unforgiving heat of Arizona. Madi spends her free time with her husband, daughter and family of pets (3 dogs and 2 cats).
The premise was amazing. Why choose hockey romance? I´m sold.
but then.... it was very weird… Like the 3 boys are in the same team but they are not friends… and the bond is not improving even as their relationship with Chandler moves on. Let’s say it’s not very deep. I like smutty books for the smut, yes, but the smut is so much better when is based on relationships. In this case is not, they all barely speak to each other.
plot wise it was a one star. The sex scenes were okish
After being rescued while running into her ex- boyfriend and his new wife, who just so happens to be the woman he cheated on her with, Chandler finds herself dating hot hockey player Vince Dumont.
Through Vince she meets his teammates, sweet soon to be captain Brent Collee, and the bad boy Matt McQuaid. Drawn to them as well, Chandler finds herself the meat in a hockey player sandwich.
Overall, The Hat Trick is fun and there’s bountiful spice (almost too much tbh), but not enough substance throughout. Which is totally fine cause I had a good time vibing, and really did love the Vince, Brent, and Matt’s characters so much.
praise, degradation, golden retriever, grumpy men, piercings, a sassy FMC, hockey romance, why choose, & THREE HOT DELICIOUS MEN. what more can you ask for?
It could've been good but one out of the guys Matt is a manwhore. When fmc was waiting for one of the guys he comes up says stuff then goes to a group of puck bunnies to take one home. Idk if he did but even before the guys said he was a manwhore. And they had there fair share of woman. But Matt was more.
Did this book even really have an actual plot? Or was it just 85% smut like I think it was? I guess it’s on me for not reading what this book was about when I picked it up because I was very interested after the first few chapters but then it just fell flat for me. Don’t even get me started on the not one but two epilogues. Vince Dumont was the best part of this book tbh and the only reason I kept reading. Matt and Brent were good too, but VD *chefs kiss*
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💚💜💙 Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Chemistry: 🧪🧪🧪🧪 Story/Plot: 📕📗 World building: 🌏🌍🌎 Character development: 😋🙂☺️ Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration type: Dual Narration
🦸🏼♀️ Heroine: Chandler
Chandler’s life is in emotional freefall. A year after her college boyfriend Jay cheated and married the other woman (which she discovered via a social media spiral — ouch), she’s still reeling. Living with her best friend and nursing a broken heart, Chandler’s world feels stuck. Enter the bucket list: a spontaneous day of “never-done” adventures, from ceramics to the town’s Christmas village, meant to shake her out of her rut.
🏒 Heroes: Vince, Brent, Matt
• Vince is the golden retriever of the trio — a pro hockey player with a soft spot for his niece and a quiet longing for connection. He spots Chandler at the Christmas village and is instantly drawn to her. • Brent, Vince’s best friend, is the emotional anchor. Raised in chaos, he’s the guy who stepped up when no one else did. • Matt McQuade is the wildcard: cocky, unapologetically blunt, and a magnet for puck bunnies. He’s the kind of guy who says what everyone’s thinking — even when they wish he wouldn’t.
🔥 Plot Snapshot
Chandler’s festive outing takes a nosedive when she runs into Jay and his new bride fresh from the courthouse. Cue Vince, who swoops in with a fake-boyfriend rescue worthy of a rom-com. Turns out, he’s not just hot — he’s hockey-famous. Sparks fly, numbers are exchanged, and Chandler’s bucket list suddenly includes a lot more heat than holiday cheer.
❤️🔥 What Worked
• The character backstories had real emotional weight. Vince’s family ties, Brent’s resilience, and Chandler’s heartbreak gave the romance depth beyond the surface-level steam. • Chandler’s vulnerability felt authentic — even if her healing journey was messy, it was relatable.
🤨 Room for More
• Chandler’s self-description as a “thick size 14 curvy girl” felt forced and overly self-conscious. It’s one thing to embrace body positivity, but this phrasing leaned into stereotype rather than empowerment. • The plot was thin — more montage than narrative arc. The emotional beats were there, but they got buried under a flood of intimate scenes that didn’t always serve the story. • The romantic entanglements blurred ethical lines. Chandler’s involvement with multiple men while claiming casual status felt emotionally inconsistent. The lack of fallout or tension between the guys made it feel too easy — and missed an opportunity for deeper conflict.
🎧 Narration Vibes
• Avery Caris nails Chandler’s voice — expressive, youthful, and emotionally grounded. Her performance felt lived-in, not read. • Patrick Zeller brings a rich tone, but his character differentiation was lacking. With multiple male POVs, distinct voices are crucial, and here they blurred together too often.
📝 Final Thoughts
This audiobook delivers on holiday charm and hockey heat, but stumbles in its emotional execution. The characters deserved more story, more tension, and more space to grow. If you’re in it for the steam and swoops, it’ll satisfy. If you’re craving layered romance with real stakes, you might be left wanting.
Smut, smut, a dribble of plot, then more smut. Don’t get me wrong, ya girl loves some nice spiceeee, but I also like some plot to go with it. This book was entirely too long for what it was, honestly I could’ve probably been a novella and it would’ve been perfect.
Even the plot that was thrown in, just feels exactly like that. It was thrown in. If it had been more plot put in it would’ve been perfect, but as it stands 🤷🏻♀️.
Anywayyyyy Matt, Brent, and Vince? You could literally kill me and I’d thank you for it 😩
Some praise, some degradation, golden retriever vibes, a well placed piercings, and lots of hockey butts. What more could you need?? Oh right, a sassy, confident FMC that gets to share the three!
I liked that this RH was a little different in that the guys weren’t an established trio and there was even a little animosity between them before Chandler brought them together. I feel like in most RHs the guys are usually best friends, maybe brothers, two of them are bi together, etc. This was a whole new adventure for all 4 of them. And I really liked watching them figure out their dynamic.
Even though Chandler was super confident most of the time, I loved her moments of vulnerability (either in her head, with Audrey, or with the guys). It definitely made her more relatable and I loved when the guys proved her wrong or Aud gave her a pep talk.
I loved watching all 4 of them deal with their breakup differently. Collee and Vince were absolutely heartbreaking. But I was so dang proud of Matt! At the end, the guys all professed their love in deep ways to her, but I wished Chandler had more of a big moment/ speech with each of them.
I did think (and maybe hope?) more drama was going to come from the WAGs. It seemed like a big plot moment and then nothing happened with it.
Cannot wait for Audrey’s book! Also hoping for Brynn and a teammate’s sister romance 😂
As much as I love Vince Dunn and The Seattle Kraken this was just too on the nose for me. I only made it 60% of the way through before I had to stop because I couldn’t not get past this. Not to mention the story was awful. There was no substance to the plot line or character development. Chandler kept going on about insecurities but never actually expanding on them and the boys were just “hot hunky hockey boys.” And there was too much smut. I love a good smut scene but it happening in every chapter with no story just aint it for me. Overall this story is ridiculous and the only reason it’s 2 stars because smut scenes were well written.
Idk what it is about this book, I tried deciphering it with a friend also reading it and we just couldn’t figure it out. But something just feels so off about this book. The dialogue doesn’t flow. It feels almost robotic at times even.
“Okay, your passes will be ready if you decide to go.” The passes I give to them are in the family suite and they enjoy it up there.
Like what is that?^^
I genuinely was looking forward to this book but I can’t get past the writing.
this was just pucking around in a different and worse font
i appreciate that when you have 4 POVS in a book it’s gonna be hard to have a plot but the plot is just the relationship and it’s not interesting enough
i’ve also seen people saying this book is based off of actual players which is just a bit odd
i have to hand it to lauren, this was definitely SPICY. whew 🥵🥵 the guys were all so swoonworthy (VINCEEEEE 😮💨😮💨) and honestly i felt like chandler was a pretty relatable character, although she did get on my nerves quite a few times. 🤷🏻♀️ overall, i really just feel like the connection between chandler and the guys was just wayyyy too instalove for me...for a book that is 500 pages long, i think there was definitely adequate room to actually build a relationship between chandler and each of the guys and honestly that would have bumped my rating up.
if you are looking for a super spicy, why choose hockey romance, this is definitely a good contender! i'm intrigued enough to continue reading the other books in this series!
"a hat trick is when a player gets three goals in one game"
Thank gosh it's over. It started off pretty great then it went down hill. The first then last name change every two sentences were no help to remember who was who. I honestly still don't know
I think there was too much focus on trying to make this as smutty as possible. The plot or whatever sorry ass you want to call this was more of a filler. There was so much potential for this to be an amazing read/listen if it just gave me more about everyone. There was no true connection and all 3 guys didn't even like each other 😭 no effort to either
The only reason I finished this was because I listened to it and i had some hope it'd get better.
This was my first introduction into Hockey romance and my first RH as well. Well maybe it wasn’t so much a romance but all out smut. Hot, thigh clenching smut.
I was legitimately concerned for her cervix at one point and then thought ahhh she’s young she’ll bounce back 😝
Told in the POV of all 4 characters you get an insight into their personal lives separately as well as the dynamic of them all together.
I felt Brent and Matt’s characters had more depth than Vince and Chandler’s but even then it was heavy on the smut and hockey and less on the character growth.
That said it didn’t take anything away from my enjoyment of this one 🤭
Treat yourself and download this one handed read from kindle unlimited. You won’t regret it 😜
Oh my goodness. I revived an ARC copy of this book and I am so happy I did. What happens when you run into your ex and his new wife and a stranger (an extremely handsome one who just happens to be a NHL player) pretends to be your boyfriend? You give him your number duh.
This is a why choose hockey romance. It is steamy and filled with great banter, an amazing plot and swoon worthy men.
If your looking for a fast burn hockey romance this is the book for you.
As much as I wanted to love this book for the pure fact of it being a Vince Dunn based character, I just couldn’t. It was super hard to read the actual writing and the style was just something I couldn’t continue on from. This was a whole bunch of smut which is why it gets at least one star, otherwise i wouldn’t even bother rating it. All in all it was very hard to follow with no actual plot - dnf
Where do I even begin with this book?! I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy as this book releases 5/29/2023 and I am so glad that I did. Currently thriving in my hockey romance era and this book and the men in it have quickly become a favorite of mine.
I haven't read many why-choose books but I'm beginning to realize that I really love them. Not only that, but the SPICE in the book is UNREAL!!! The best part? You don't have to wait around for it and it's not only a few scenes. It happens right from the start and continues every few chapters...and it is SPICYYYYYY.
Can we also talk about the mouths on these men and how different the three of them were? First, you have Vince who is has big golden retriever energy and calls Chandler "baby." Then you have the controlling, dominating Brent who refers to Chandler as "beautiful." Finally, there's the cocky Matt who refers to Chandler as "little bunny.' I DIE.
Chandler is also a badass FMC - she's a curvy girl who throughout the book builds some serious self confidence and learns how to stand up for herself and go after the things (and men) that she wants.
I think what I loved most about this book was how these four characters took an extremely unconventional situation and learned how to make it their own. I loved that they all individually overcame something and learned how to move past whatever they were struggling with, but also how they supported each other along the way.
This book is a 10/10 for me and I will be recommending this to anyone who is looking for a great read.

So what's better than fake dating one hockey player? 3 HOT ONES! Well, technically she was fake dating one for a minute. Chandler was recently cheated on by her GARBAGE again GARBAGE of an ex now she met her ex at a Christmas village with the girl he cheated on and now she's his WIFE?! THE AUDACITY!!!
But our baby...Our golden retriever, man! Vince swoops in and pretends to be her new boyfriend. A lot happens from there. He may be possessive, but he will do anything to make our Chandler happy~! Even if our girl got trust issues, the effort and time these guys for her. I love how their relationships developed for each guy. They have different personalities and they blend really, really well.
THEY WORSHIP HER. Praise and degradation. I'm just a whore for hate sex, but lawd have mercy all of them combined?! OH. MY. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD.
Even though it deals with jaw-dropping spice dude, my heart goes out to them. I loved this book. Devoured this book WHOLE and I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT COUPLE! If you want spice, no need to look further! This is a standalone romance you can read with a HEA!
🏒 Why choose 🏒 Hockey romance 🏒 There's fake dating 🏒 There' hate s3x 🏒 There' 's a daddy dom, sweetheart, alphahole 🏒 The SPICE IS TOP SCORCHING HOT 🏒 ANGST 🏒 Bejeweled peen 🏒 They basically WORSHIP HER!
This book had everything I wanted in a hockey romance. Why choose, fake dating, insta-crush, a lot of spice. Chandler, experiences a failed relationship and bumps into her ex and his wife, but luckily a hot hockey player comes to her rescue. Vince pretends to be her boyfriend and instantly develops a crush on her. I love seeing how Chandler builds up her confidence and she’s such a relatable character. I adore her sassy and care-free attitude.
Madi you did such a wonderful job introducing each of the guys. You had the perfect balance of a sweet golden retriever guy, a dominant broody guy, and a alpha-hole guy. It was interesting to learn about each of their past and how their connection is formed with Chandler.
I haven’t read many why choose hockey romance, but WOW I’m hooked because this was such an amazing book. So many spicy scenes, amazing plot, and it has great supportive side characters. This was such a fun reading. I’m really looking forward to the next book! HIGHLY recommend.

Hockey why choose romance with teammates… YES PLEASE!
This was so dang good! I enjoyed every raunchy minute of it and kept changing my mind on which MMC was my favorite. Because honestly there was a flavor MMC for everyone, a cinnamon roll (Vince) and alpha (Brent) and a jerk (Matt) and like Chandler, I wanted them all.
(Secretly we all know the cinnamon roll wins for me)

Chandler has sworn off men after her ex did a number on her self esteem, but when she runs into him and his new wife, a handsome stranger steps in to pretend to be her boyfriend. She has no idea that he is a star hockey player. Vince just wants Chandler in his life so when it’s obvious that there are sparks between her and his teammates, he doesn’t mind sharing her if he gets to keep her.
I loved that each MMC was so different and even though the smut was smutting, we still got some solid plot and character development! I enjoyed this from start to finish and absolutely cannot wait for more!
What happens when Chandler accidentally stumbles upon one very hot specimen of a man who also happens to be a hockey player after running into her cheating ex? What happens when you add in two of his teammates, one being his best friend and the other being one he doesn’t get a long with? Well the answer is the best kind of Hat Trick, a lot of drama, tension (the fun and the not fun kind), giggles and LOTS of spice.
This hockey why choose is everything you need from a hockey romance and from a why choose mashed together into one VERY spicy book.
My thoughts: •Chandler got the 3 best kinds of boyfriends. A golden retriever, a dominant broody man and my fave a red flag grade A butt head who softens up for her and only her. •Audrey and Brynn are the PERFECT side characters. They had me cracking up in almost every scene they were a part of.
Hockey Romance is amazing as it but when you add a harem to that it just got even better. The hat trick made you want to cry at one point because I feel every girl has had their insecurities put right out in the open. The men themselves are amazing and I love how well they treat the FMC. This storyline was so well written I could not put the book down. Being an ARC reader for this author is absolutely amazing because this book has been everything I wanted and more in a hockey romance. I love reverse harems and this sure didn’t disappoint. I also love how the FMC isn’t a size 2 with a tiny waist, you rarely see a book being written about a size 14 and it just made this feel more relatable so thank you Madi Danielle.
I had high hopes going into The Hat Trick - it’s a why choose hockey romance so of course I requested an ARC!
The sex was HOT, the guys were swoon worthy, and Chandler was an easy character to relate to, but I wanted more. The relationship between Chandler and the guys was missing that emotional pull that I look for - everything just happened really fast and while the author told us about this deep connection they all felt for one another, I just didn’t see or feel it develop.
If you’re in it for the hotties and their sexy time, this would easily rate higher for a lot of people - that’s just not me!
*thanks to Wordsmith Publicity and Madi Danielle for an ARC in exchange for an honest review*
