When a body was found at the edge of the bayou, police detective Charlotte Reid knew the serial killer who murdered her sister was back. And if she didn’t stop him, he’d kill again. Hunted by a Killer is written by Laurie Winter. This is part of the Love Inspired Cold Case series that is written by multiple authors. I really love how this author sets the scenes. The story starts out with action and suspense, and does not let up throughout the whole story.
Police Detective Charlotte Reid has had a lot happen. Her sister was murdered, and when a body shows up she knows deep in her soul that her sister's killer is back. She finds herself teamed up with FBI special agent Austin Walsh. It's been six years since they had teamed up last.
It becomes very clear that the killer wants to make this personal. Charlotte finds herself trapped in a game of cat and mouse. The killer gives her an ultimatum: catch him or she will become his next victim.
The author has written such great characters, you can feel the adrenaline coming off the pages. The story is well written. I could not read fast enough. I loved all the reminders about trusting in God's plan throughout the story.
Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity Tours, all thoughts are my own.
the past comes back to haunt detective charlotte reid and fbi agent austin walsh in laurie winter's hunted by a killer...
"she had to fight. good had to win."
six years ago, charlotte and austin failed to catch the presque killer; now, the pair has a second chance to stop him. a body is found that suggests the elusive serial killer is on the prowl again, and then, he confirms it when he kidnaps charlotte—and issues a challenge: find him within a week or she'll be one of his victims.
of course, amidst the threats and danger, romantic feelings must, too, be reckoned. charlotte and austin caught feelings the first time they partnered on the case—but their jobs (and failure) tore them apart. they have a second chance now to see if, maybe this time, they can lock down a future together, along with a serial killer, before time runs out.
it's a race against time in this quick read—and that makes it quite a fun read. even while assuming everything would be okay in the end, there are some tense moments, thanks to a devious killer. i would have like to see more present-time romantic development alongside the suspense (because i'm always here for a little more romance), but it does all make sense in the context.
all in all, hunted by a killer is a solid read. romantic-suspense readers could easily enjoy this one.
(i received a complimentary copy from the publisher. i was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions i have expressed are my own.)
considerations: —language: none —spice: kisses only —faith: praying, going to church, references to God —content: murder, kidnapping, childhood in foster care, addicted family member
So, what do you do when the serial killer wants to play a game with you? Unfortunately, you must stop him, but he does make it much more difficult when he makes all the rules and sees you as a pawn. That is the situation that police detective Charlotte Reid finds herself in when the killer she has been hunting for years decides to hunt her. She not only has to face her own terror, but also the terror of the women he is kidnapping.
This is a very personal vendetta, not just because he has targeted Charlotte, but also, he killed her sister some years ago. During the last investigation, she met and fell in love with FBI agent Austin Walsh. Things didn't work out that time due to this case and the loss of her beloved sister. However, now Austin is back and as determined as Charlotte to get this murderer off the streets. But what they have to go through, and the mind games the killer plays with them is downright cruel.
This is a rather fast paced story of hunting, healing, and of course romance. It reminds me of a favorite show, The Mentalist, who was also tracking down a serial killer for personal reasons. There is just something next level creepy when the killer begins playing with people's lives.
I was provided a copy of this novel by the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

In an interesting, and VERY embarrassing admission 🫣 I actually forgot I’d read a book by the author a few years ago. (Please forgive me 🥺).
It was a Christmas story back in 2021, and definitely not the best year of the 2020’s. It was cute and whimsical, yet sad and heartbreaking Christmas romance. But, like some books, it did get forgotten. That isn’t the author’s fault – I have been known to read 50-100 books a year.
However …
When I saw this book, and it being my preferred genre, I didn’t hesitate to read it. And, this one made quite the impression.
I was drawn to the story right off. The cover? Let’s say it wasn’t one of those that scream out, or isn’t that noticeable. There is something eerie about it. Almost like a creepy calmness. It is very deceiving.
And, that deception is the perfect introduction to the story.
The author introduces readers to:
🚓 Detective Charlotte Reid 🚔 FBI Special Agent Austin Walsh 🚓 Chief Alan Spencer (Charlotte’s boss)
Along with other characters that balance out the good guys/gals and the baddies.
Like most suspense books, there will be some content that might be disturbing to some readers. In addition to the serial killings – most of which occurred prior to the story – there will be kidnappings, references to drug and alcohol addiction, mention of parental abandonment, parental incarceration, and kids in foster care.
Winter doesn’t hesitate to jump into the story.
Six years ago, Charlotte and Austin were investigating the serial killer known only as the Presque Killer. The last victim was Charlotte’s sister Ruby. After that, the killings stopped, and Austin was called away. While the two had grown close, Charlotte was angry at Austin.
Six years later, another woman has been killed. While it isn’t for definite, Gunther wastes no time in calling in the FBI. And, Austin returns. Even before the investigation begins, the killer gets to Charlotte, giving her an ultimate – find him within seven (7) days or she’ll be one of his victims.
This time, with a target on Charlotte’s back, Austin refuses to leave until the killer is caught. Despite knowing how his job impacts having a wife and kids, Austin still wonders what it would be like – especially with Charlotte.
Being that the last killing six years earlier was connected to Charlotte, Austin has a feeling that it is personal. That becomes more of a fact as they re-examine the similarities with the previous victims to Charlotte, Ruby being one of them.
What plagues them is the lack of DNA from the killer. They’re also wondering why he took a six-year hiatus.
When the first woman is taken within the deadline, Charlotte and Austin ramp up their efforts, yet reach dead ends. The killer finds a way to Charlotte and taunts her at each turn.
While Austin is confident they will catch the killer, he’s also worried about the mental impact it will take on Charlotte; in addition to what the future might hold for her as a detective. He knows that a conviction is not the end of the story for the families – the death still remains.
He growing closer to Charlotte again; and she is also growing closer to Austin.
But, with the deadline ticking down, they can’t waste time. Yet, trying to find someone who leaves no evidence behind is not an easy task.
Winter does a great job with keeping the suspense going since this is lighter on the suspense when compared to other books in the line. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it – I did. Immensely so. I was drawn right in, and ended up reading half of it in one sitting. I finished it inside of 24-hours. It started as the “one more chapter” deal, and ended up with three more past that and a late bedtime. The short chapters are the real deceivers here, but it keeps the story going and the reader’s attention (at least mine).
The suspense is a cat/mouse game between the killer and Charlotte. It was creepy, but not sinister. The action really picks about 88% in, and got intense for me. The identity of the killer was easy to guess, though I still wondering what the connection was.
While this is a romantic suspense, the romance barely takes up 6% of the story.
Speaking of romance …
One thing I did have a slight issue with was Austin and his idea that his job prevented him having a wife and family. It did seem a bit cliché. However, in research, I learned something interesting – some FBI agents work a part-time schedule anywhere from 16-32 hours in order to balance the family/work life. Of course, agents have to be past their probationary period. It would be something for Austin to look into.
There were a few things I related to Charlotte with. The most relatable was being a stain magnet. She is thinking about why she has something white in her wardrobe as she attracts stains. I had to laugh because this is why I switched, despite our triple digit heat summers (we’ve had record 120°F highs), to black clothes (tops and bottoms). I just got tired of treating stains. A funny story –> I own NASCAR shirts for different drivers (quite a few), and one of my most favorite drivers – his shirts seemingly attracted food more than the others.
Another connection to Charlotte – she preferred the print documents over electronic. I am the same way – I’d rather read a print book than an eBook. If it’s a PDF, I’ll print it. It’s just easier for me. Then again, I also don’t like staring at a screen longer than I need to as it hurts my eyes and head.
The faith element didn’t get mentioned until about 24% of the way in, built up, and then slowed down. It wasn’t a major part of the storyline, and was confined to how the characters (Charlotte and Austin) dealt with their lives. There was a reporter who used the two going to church, painting Charlotte in a bad light.
The community feeling of “does the police even care” about the victims was quite realistic. It’s easy to look from the outside in to wonder “what are the police really doing”. While, on the inside, it’s hard to investigate without evidence, leads, and witnesses. One of the victim’s family members made an impactful statement by saying that the community couldn’t expect the police to do their job unless they wanted to give the police information.
I’m looking forward to what the author has planned next. While this seems to be a standalone read, I can’t help but feel it is the beginning of a series. The way the book ended leaves me to believe that. I felt it was a bit too abrupt to leave where it was.
Anyone who enjoys the Love Inspired Suspense line, is sure to enjoy this read.
This was such a great fast paced read. Charlotte Reid has always felt she failed in not solving her sister’s murder, so when body turns up that closely resembles past crime scenes, she wonders if the Presque Killer is back. This time she is determined to solve these cases and put the killer behind bars for good! FBI Agent Walsh is called back in to assist once again and Charlotte knows she needs to put the past and feelings aside to focus on this case. But when she becomes the target with a deadline, she knows she has to rely on Walsh once again. Putting herself front and center might be the only way to catch him, but is her life worth the risk? I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
This book was totally awesome!! I finished it in 2 days. And what a story! I couldn't read it fast enough, and the ending blew me away. I so wasn't expecting that.
Detective Charlotte Reid and Special Agent Austin Walsh are teamed up to find a serial killer that has already killed four women including Charlotte’s sister. Six years have passed since they last worked as partners, and now the serial killer is suddenly terrorizing Presque, LA once again. The killer is becoming emboldened to the point where he kidnaps the detective to taunt her with his new game. She has one week to catch him while he kidnaps women in the area. If she fails he vows to kill them and her.
It becomes clear that the killer knows Charlotte, and he is somehow tied to her past. As they race against the deadline to save the women and solve the mystery Charlotte has to put aside her own grief and guilt over not having caught him before. She blames herself for letting down her sister and the other victims. Charlotte and Austin try and fight the feelings that have rekindled between them even after six years. Together they pour over every clue again trying to find what is in plain sight, but eluding them to discover the killers identity.
I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this book. The author keeps you guessing as she leads you through the clues. This story will reel you in from the beginning, and keep you interested throughout. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but the views expressed in this review are my own.
A story filled with the lead characters' guilt and grief woven into a suspenseful mystery . . .
Police detective, Charlotte Reid, is fully invested in finding a serial killer who is once again terrorizing her small hometown of Presque, Louisiana. This case is very personal to Charlotte because her younger sister, Ruby, was a recent victim of this vicious killer . . .
FBI special agent Austin Walsh is sent back to Presque to work on the investigation. It's an awkward situation for two reasons—one professional and one personal. Austin's special skills in tracking serial killers and investigating these difficult cases increases his level of concern that this serial killer has returned to Presque after several years. Why is he continuing to kill?
After a lot of dead ends, red herrings, and wrong turns in the investigation, the story culminates with a heart-pounding ending that spotlights the heroine's courage, quick thinking, and determination to solve this case once and for all.
Charlotte and Austin work well together, and fans of romantic suspense will enjoy the progression of their personal relationship within the story arc. The book is completely clean in language and content.
I received a copy of this book from the author through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my opinions and thoughts shared here are solely my own.
Detective Charlotte Reid lost her sister Ruby when she was captured and killed by a serial killer. He killed many other women, then seemingly vanished. Now, 6 years later, the killer is back-and his sights are on Charlotte. With the help of FBI Special Agent Austin Walsh, she’s determined to catch the killer before he kills again. The pair made a great team trying to hunt this guy down and the romance between Charlotte and Austin was really sweet and realistic.
This Christian suspense really had me guessing! After all the trauma Charlotte had to deal with through her life, and the countless crime scenes Austin has seen while in the FBI, they both find comfort in Jesus as a reprieve from the evil they face daily.
I only figured out the killer a few pages before the detective did! I didn’t really understand the reasoning for who the killer ended up being but I guess serial killers really don’t make much sense anyhow.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
A serial killer is back in action in Presque, Louisiana in author Laurie Winter’s newest suspense, Hunted by a Killer. Detective Charlotte Reid is still haunted by the deaths of four young women six years earlier. She won’t rest until she solves the now-cold-cases and catches the killer, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but also because one of the victims was her sister. But the Presque Killer has struck again. Why the break? Why start again now? FBI Special Agent Austin Walsh assisted with the original cases. But at some point, he had to go back to D.C. Charlotte felt abandoned and let down. But Austin never forgot those women, and now he’s back to help again, and this time he won’t leave until the killer is caught. The killer is playing a sick game, and Charlotte is right in the middle of it. Can Charlotte and Reid catch the killer before time is up? I so enjoyed this story! The author takes us on a twisting ride, head swiveling back and forth, keeping us guessing…fantastic! Settle in because you’ll be hooked! I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.
This is how an intense Christian suspense should be done! Everyone is a suspect, you can almost feel the ticking of the clock clicking down the entire time you’re reading, and it is unnerving. I always enjoy the investigation process so much when I read these police procedurals. I knew the instant we were introduced to the killer that it was him, though there were plenty of other characters that were thrown in to throw me off the scent, which kept me constantly guessing, and made the story all the more interesting. I can only imagine the pressure that real detectives face on a daily basis, the pressure to find an UNSUB before they strike again.
What was unexpected was a major twist that was truly unexpected, and honestly, I was living for it. So many of these clean suspense novels follow the same cookie cutter pattern but this one took a turn that took me down a path that felt fresh and unexpected. This almost has more of a murder mystery feel to it. Trying to find connections to the detective while also hunting a killer added a unique layer that made the storyline more nuanced.
There is a faith element in this novel, but it didn’t feel forced to me and was just a natural part of the characters traits. The suspense is unmatched, with the question of who the serial killer is while also mixing in the mystery of how there is a connection between him and Charlotte is just wow.

If you love inspirational suspense books, you’ve got to read Hunted by a Killer by Laurie Winter! It is non-stop suspense as investigators track down a serial killer. I loved Hunted by a Killer! Not only does it have edge-of-your-seat suspense, it’s also got great characters, romance, and inspiration.
Several years ago detective Charlotte Reid and FBI special agent Austin Walsh worked together on the serial killings, but when they weren’t getting results, Walsh was called back home to work on another case. Now that the killer is supposedly back, Austin is back in Presque, LA to work with Charlotte once again. In terms of the romance, I appreciated that Charlotte and Austin had spent a lot of time together in the past because it makes the romance more believable. The romance is always clean in Love Inspired Suspense books, and I adored the way the author presented Charlotte and Austin’s romance as it developed throughout the book.
Hunted by a Killer is a hard book to put down! Make sure you don’t start it close to bedtime! I really felt the pressure that Charlotte and Austin were under. Chasing a serial killer that eluded them once before had to have them doubting themselves. I always thought it would be cool to be in the FBI or CIA, but I would panic and probably cry when things were going too slowly! I don’t do well under pressure. All of the characters are very well-written, and I was kept guessing which character the serial killer was until close to the end.
I highly recommend Hunted by a Killer for its well-developed characters, strong message about faith, and page-turning suspense!

I REALLY enjoy LOVE Inspired Suspense novels. Hunted by a Killer by Laurie Winter is part of the COLD CASE series that is done by Various Authors. I have read a few others in this series and I was excited to read this book.
WOW, the suspense and mystery starts immediately and doesn't let up throughout the entire book. I could not stop reading until i was done because it was soo good. I really LOVE both of the main characters, Charlotte Reid and Austin Walsh. charlotte is a Police Detective who has a passion for her job. Her sister was murdered by a serial killer years ago and she is determined to make sure he doesn't kill again. Austin is an FBI agent and wants to protect her when her life is at risk from the serial killer who killed her sister. The pair really work well together and the fact they knew each other before this case helped them. The Romance between Charlotte and Austin was beautiful, especially when they rely on God to help them with the case and their budding romance. The book has many twists and turns and really kept me intrigued to keep reading. The book is filled with Mystery, Romance and Faith. I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who loves Chrsitian Mystery with Romance. GREAT BOOK!
Hunted by a Killer is an amazing suspense novel that will have you guessing at who the killer is and looking over your shoulder in the dark.
I love a good suspense novel and this is one of those. The main character stole my heart right away. It starts with telling you about a dead body. And then the connection of the dead body to the dead sister of our detective. And from there the story just keeps rolling. It’s not going to slow down either. Especially after a handsome someone comes on the scene. A certain someone who our detective knows well.
Can they get over their past? Or at least come to terms with it? Will they continue on their path together? Or will the killer get Charlotte before she figures out who he is?!
This read quickly. I couldn’t put it down. It’s one of those novels that once you start you can’t stop. I highly recommend you give it a read. The cold case doesn’t stay cold and the action does not stop!

This was a white knuckle thrill ride of epic proportions. Detective Charlotte Reid has grieved the murder of her sister and wants nothing more than to find her killer. When another young woman's body is found with eerily similar markings, Charlotte knows that the Presque Killer is back.
FBI Agent Austin Walsh is back in town to help with this case. He broke Charlotte's heart the last time he was in town, but she knows that he is an expert in the art of catching a serial killer. Now Charlotte is the crosshairs of the killer. He has made a promise to her that he will give her an opportunity to catch him and save others, but if she is unsuccessful, she will die along with the others he has kidnapped. Now that is a heavy load to bear.
This was one of those mystery/thrillers that grabs you by the throat and does not let go until the case is solved. It is a wonderful inspirational mystery that delivers suspense and spiritual depth in equal measure. I had no problem flying through the pages of this book.
Thank you to JustRead Publicity for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this suspenseful read about a serial killer killing again and the detective and FBI agent who would stop at nothing to bring him to justice this time. I can't imagine feeling like you'd failed your sister after not catching her killer and then being taunted by him when he decides to start up again. Charlotte was an incredibly strong person and I admired her determination. Austin, too, was pretty impressive as he focuses on cases like this all of the time and yet felt this case had haunted him since they weren't able to find the killer. I found the investigation interesting but was surprised at what they had seemed to miss before. I did like how the story kept me guessing! I liked the hint at a romantic past between them and the possibility for more, even though they both struggled against it. They both had a strong faith, too, but had to deal with their questions to God about why evil exists and what they can do to stop it. I would recommend this book if you like romantic suspense!
I received a free copy of this book from the author. I was not compensated for this review. All opinions are my own.
When she and FBI agent Austin Walsh failed to find her sister Ruby's murderer, she was bereft. Of course, she carried on with her job with her usual effectiveness and capability. But in her heart and head, that failure never went away.
Now, it appears that that killer is back. And he's communicated with Charlotte: if she doesn't find him in 7 days, he'll continue to kill--and she'll be his final victim. But thus far, he's been as elusive as he was the first time, even with Austin back on hand to help.
With few clues (just some physical evidence matching Ruby's death) and a number of potential suspects, Charlotte and Austin aren't making much progress. And the clock is ticking...
This is a definite must-read for anyone who loves police procedurals and suspenseful reads with a hint of clean romance, and faith. I highly recommend this! You won't be able to put it down.
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions shared here are my own.
This one started out right in the action, and stayed intense the entire time! I did guess the killer right away, but the story still had some surprises. And I did think the romance needed a bit more development, instead of just relying on their history. But the story kept my interest, and even resulted in some creepy dreams, so it was definitely thrilling enough! The Christian aspect was nicely done, subtle, without preachy or taking over the focus. Charlotte's character was well written, and she and Austin both grew by the end of the story, which added some depth to their characters. I'd definitely try this author again.
Content: mild gore/violence.
I received this book free from the publisher/author. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
This was a great suspense that drew me in from the first page. I found myself being unable to put it down and reading faster and faster so I could see how the story ended. I loved how well the author planted clues so we didn’t put everything together until the characters did. I also liked that there was a second chance of love theme with Austin and Charlotte. I liked how they learned to let down some of their walls and be open to love even during a stressful time. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a great suspense with a happy ending. I will definitely look into reading more books by this author.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
I love reading Love Inspired Suspense books because they are suspenseful, on the edge of my seat, CLEAN action, mystery and romance!
This story had twists and turns as Charlotte and Austin once again find themselves trying to follow the clues and catch the serial killer before he strikes again in Presque, Louisiana. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and how well they worked together in this story. Since this case was very personal to both of them, they found themselves relying on each other and their faith to get them thru.
Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down! I highly recommend this fast paced, clean suspense book!

Hunted by a Killer by Laurie Winter is a mystery and a fast read.
Charlotte Reid is a police detective hunting a serial killer. Among his past victims was her sister. The case had gone cold until another girl turned up missing. Showing signs of the killer's return, Charlotte's boss decided to call in the FBI. Special agent Austin Walsh enters the stage—the same agent who helped her hunt for the serial killer the last time.
The lack of clues dumbfounds Charlotte and Austin. The killer sets up a game. Find him in seven days. If Charlotte doesn't, he will kill all the girls he has kidnapped and her.
Good qualities: Austin is a good character who tosses in humor occasionally. The story is set in the Deep South.
This book started off with a bang. We are immediately thrown into deep water as the story starts off at a fast and harrowing pace. A Christian romantic suspense novel set in Louisiana gives two law enforcement personnel a second chance. With a returned serial killer on the loose, our detective heroine and FBI agent hero must work against the clock to find some clue as to his identity to save many lives. This is my first book by this author, and I would definitely enjoy reading more. This book had strong characters and backstory. The faith was woven throughout it. There is pain and horror, sweet moments, second chances, and mystery. I enjoyed the slight southern feel to this book. Career versus love. Love of family, romantic love…
I received an ARC of this book via Just Read Tours and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This book was amazing! Laurie Winter sends you into a heart-plunging adrenaline rush of a page turner! I loved the characters and the action packed plot was so good! Police Detective Charlotte Reid knew the serial killer who killed her sister six years ago, is back. A body was discovered in a ditch and now detective Reid is forced to play a deadly game, catch the serial killer in seven days or else she will become his next victim. Together, Detective Reid and FBI special agent Austin Walsh must catch the serial killer before things get deadly.

Oh wow!! Hunted by a Killer is one of the best suspense stories I've ever read!! Ms. Winter caught my attention from the beginning on the first page. This book is exciting, intense, action packed, heart stopping, sitting on the edge of your seat suspense with twists and turns!! A roller coaster of a ride!! I love the wonderful characters. Detective Charlotte Reid is a fighter. She doesn't give up. FBI agent, Austin Walsh tries to protect her. I couldn't put this book down!! A must read!! I was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
This was just what I needed today. It was a fast paced read that I was able to finish in a few hours. I really enjoyed the romance between Austin and Charlotte. They had some previous history together so their romance happened pretty quickly in this book. I love that they both relied on their faith during their hunt for the serial killer. The suspense/mystery aspects of the books were great. Nothing too scary, but it gets the blood pumping. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.
*I was sent a complimentary copy. All opinions stated in the review are my own.
Det. Charlotte Reid is chasing a serial killer. Six yrs. ago the killing started and despite her best effects Det. Reid didn't catch the killer now is back and she has to try and catch the killer . She will have help in the form of Special agent Austin Walsh . Austin helped her last time as well. The killer has changed how he does things this time. He is kidnapping girl and giving Det. Reid a time frame to catch him before he kills them and Det. Reid as well. This is a clean ,Christian thriller . Very action packed and very enjoyable . This was a new author to me and it a very good read.
