I’ve been reading since forever, but I’d never really considered the idea of being an author. That was a title that could only ever be held by someone who was as prestigious and brilliant as Tamora Pierce, Neil Gaiman, Diana Wynne Jones, Terry Pratchett, Ann Rice, Erin Morgenstern, Douglas Adams, V.E. Schwab, Alan Moore, Samantha Shannon, C. S. Lewis, or Liana Taylor. Being an author was a coveted career, not just some hobby.
However, I realized that was a very limiting viewpoint that really only held me back. So, I started writing, found I was a terribly harsh critic of my own work, and decided to do some ‘research’.
Somehow, I can’t even recall how, I stumbled into the paranormal, why choose, and dark romance genres. I was immediately hooked and completely unable to write. I probably read a book a day and was forced to purchase Kindle Unlimited.
When I ran out of new content by published authors, I fell into the Dramione fanfiction blackhole that defined my life for about eight months. I read and read and read everything I could get my hands on, even though I swore I would never read books on my phone. Hermione and Draco were the epitome of yum for me.
Then I ran out of things to read and realized I needed to start writing again.
I just couldn't get into it. Also the author insisted on writing out every single sentence the characters spoke in a foreign language and put the translation into footnotes which nearly gave me an aneurysm.
The only thing that really kept me from giving this 5 stars is that I think this book could’ve benefited by an additional ~100 pages as it moved a little too fast. Since the book is based on the main character’s favorite Irish fairytale, I wish the beginning of the book talked about what the fairytale actually was prior to diving right in so that way readers are able to connect with the fairytale’s story, world, and characters prior to actually being introduced to them. I really loved that the book comes with a glossary, pronunciation, and translated footnotes for the Irish dialogue. Just the fact it included Irish dialogue to begin with was really awesome to see! The characters were lively, the spice was just right, and I was entertained throughout.
2.5 stars .Received digital copy from a giveaway. I tried several times to read this but it's so hard to get into it. Once you do, there isn't a lot of flow. Scenes and chapters don't mesh well together. The Celtic/Irish phases sprinkled through don't really add much, except having to pause to see what they mean. I do like the overall idea. One finds themselves thrown into one of their favorite books with their book crush. It just was not executed well.
Whew, thank the gods for the glossary in the back and the classifications at the beginning. This is a very sexy piece of gods and those they comingle with, the humans. Very funny, humorous, eye opening, but with a very strong grasp of mythology. No matter the language the tongue is of love.
