The Assembly #1

Those Who Dwell in Darkness

Rate this book
The hunt for a serial killer leads a vampire agent to uncover a terrifying conspiracy in this dark urban fantasy by the author of the Hellequin Chronicles.

Vampires and humans live side by side thanks to an uneasy peace maintained by the Assembly. As an Arbiter for the powerful organization, Miles Watson is authorized to act as judge, jury, and executioner for anyone—living or undead—who breaks the law. But now Miles is up against a threat more sinister than anything he’s seen in his centuries as a vampire.

A criminal network in London is offering wealthy humans the chance to become vampires without the Assembly’s consent. When the process goes disastrously wrong, the Boss wants to eliminate any trace of the fiasco. But a rogue enforcer refuses to play along, and trouble quickly escalates out of anyone’s control.

As Miles sets off searching for the illegal vampires, he finds himself on the trail of a monstrous serial killer. The twisty investigation takes him from London’s deadly underworld to the rural backwaters of the Pacific Northwest—where an even more devious criminal enterprise threatens all of vampire-kind . . .

Known for his terrifying tales of urban fantasy, author Steve McHugh goes even deeper into the shadows with this noirish vampire thriller, which masterfully combines suspenseful plotting and intricate world-building.

Those Who Dwell in Darkness
By Steve McHugh
This book was so awesome! Two of my favorite series are from McHugh! If this is the start of another series, then I am onboard!
It has vampires, corruption, and illegal changing of people to vampires. A serial killer. An Arbiter named Miles, (who decides cases on his own, decides if they are guilty, what do do about it, then punishes), is following this case that leads him further into darker secrets.
This book has a good mystery, horror, creatures, great world building, the creep factor, and had me cheering for Miles, who is a powerful being himself! I was never bored! Very exciting and fresh!
Love the cover, too! Love his dog, too! That's Church! Part vampire!

I re-read this and enjoyed it as much as the first time! Mr McHugh has book #2 coming out in March, so I wanted to refresh my memory. I definitely am reading it!

I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Zooloos Book Tours.

Those Who Dwell In Darkness is one of the best vampire books I've read in a long time!
We follow Miles, who's a centuries old vampire in his role policing human and supernatural criminals in London. When he goes on the hunt for a serial killer, he finds himself in some of the worst trouble in his life. I really enjoyed Miles's character, and I loved Church so much (his loyal dog - who, as you can see on the cover). The twists and turns this book throws at you were fantastic, as was the pacing, development of the characters, humour, and plot. It's such an amazing world, and I'm praying this becomes a series as I feel there's so much in the way of directions that this book can take us.
As with most vampire books, there is a little gore but nothing too much to handle.

First Book Of 2024!

These Who Dwell in Darkness by Steve McHugh

I listened to the audiobook version of These Who Dwell in Darkness, so I have no idea how long it is in page count. But I’ve seen other reviews call it a big book, and honestly, it didn’t feel that way at all. The pacing is fast, the story is addictive, and it never drags.

This is a gritty urban fantasy that brings back the darker, more monstrous side of vampires. No sparkling, no tortured brooding romantics here. If you’ve read my reviews before, you know I can’t stand "romantasy," so rest assured: this is not that. It’s sharp, tense, and focused on mystery and action over love and longing.

The worldbuilding is thorough and made complete sense to me, even jumping into this series fresh. It has a slightly smoky, noir vibe that worked really well with the tone. There’s a strong murder mystery thread, with our main character hunting a potential vampiric serial killer, and the balance between supernatural elements and procedural detective work was spot on.

But as always with Steve McHugh’s books, the real strength lies in the characters. I liked Miles from the start. He’s the kind of guy you’d want as a best friend. A very dangerous, slightly grumpy, incredibly capable best friend, sure, but one with rock-solid morals and a genuinely good heart. His relationships with his found family and acquaintances felt believable and lived-in, with just the right amount of snark and loyalty. And yes, there’s plenty of the kind of banter I love most.

That said, the real star of the book is Church. She’s the best girl and easily one of my favorite fictional dogs ever. I don’t usually like when animals in books act too human, but Church strikes the perfect balance. She’s clearly not a regular dog, far too intelligent and intuitive for that, but she’s still a dog. She likes dog things, behaves like a dog, and brings heart and joy to the story in a way that never feels forced or cutesy. I need more Church in my life, just the canine version though, please!

And while this didn’t affect the plot directly, I had to laugh a few times imagining how angry certain readers might get over some of the casual inclusivity. McHugh makes it very clear (again!) that Nazis are bad, there’s a diverse and inclusive cast, and gasp!, even an electric car. None of it is preachy or shoved in your face; it all fits naturally into the world and characters. But imagining the “woke is ruining everything!” crowd fuming just from those details? That gave me an extra little dose of joy. Bonus points for that.

So while this might be a “chunky” book by page count, it read like a fast, gripping ride. Gritty action, strong characters, solid mystery, and a big clever dog? Yes, please. I’m absolutely coming back for more.

I think it’s only fair to say that this book is chunky, it’s long but it doesn’t feel like it once you get started. In fact I adored this book and already want more. So please, please, please do not be put off by the length of this book. I promise you it won’t feel like it because once you step foot into this superbly built urban fantasy world you will forget everything else!

Now that’s out of the way this is my second book by Steve McHugh and I have to say he’s becoming a favourite author. I have always enjoyed vampires and vampire stories (a bit of a werewolf girl at heart though) and while I have read the ‘softer’ side of vampire fiction in the past – Think Vampire Diaries I have always loved the darker side of them and wanted more fiction that delves into the darker side and let me tell you, McHugh has given me just that and so much more!

First of all the world is perfect. A world where vampires and humans live side by side and is built up to be believable and fleshed out (excuse the pun). I loved the houses and the politics and just everything. On top of this we have a noir-like feel of an enforcer hunting down a serial killer. Secondly the characters! I haven’t read a book in a long time where all the characters seem to be important or relevant. None are there for filler. And Miles is a brilliant protagonist but the real star for me was Church! Who doesn’t love a large, loyal, dog who is perfect? I mean I loved Miles and the others don’t get me wrong but if you give me a cute, if vicious dog (or any dog really) they are going to become my favourite.

But on top of the world building and characters the plot and pacing are top notch. I could hardly put this one down. I loved all the arcs and twists and turns. McHugh really takes vampires and other mythical creatures and makes them his own with a tightly woven plot that elements of urban fantasy, horror, crime and thriller. Basically it ticks all my boxes and I really, really want to see more stories in this vivid world! You need to read this if you are looking for a unique and thrilling read with realistic vampires and memorable characters.

What a book! What a big chunka lunk book! I WANT MORE!!! This book is awesome! I love Miles and his dog, his rather large dog, Church!

There has to be more! This world that Steve has created, is epic. It's vast and there has to be more. Especially with the ending! This book has so much potential to be an awesome series.

Don't let the page count put you off, it's large. Not going to lie, but boy it's worth every single page. The detail of the Houses, the desolate, and the way in which humans and vampires live together, it's immense and so well done.

I fell in love with Church the second I met her. She is a fierce and loyal sidekick. Miles, well he is just awesome, quite frankly! He is clever, and doesn't take the crap and he gets stuff done. Just wanting a peaceful life. He's everything I wanted and more in an MC.

God! I LOVED this book! It may have taken me a long time to get through with my current mojo but it's a book that has made me fall back in love with reading. I could talk about it all day. But no spoilers here.

Every character and situation had a purpose and there was a particular emotional moment for a character. A character who doesn't feature much but was still really sad. That's a testament to the writing because I really cared about them.

The audiobook for this is coming out soon and I am so tempted to get it, and listen to the mega tale as I think it will be epic!!

I am so excited by this book and if you love vampires, action, detective work, and a little bit of gore...then this is for you!!

Those Who Dwell In Darkness is an Urban Fantasy thriller novel by Steve McHugh.
This book takes you on an epic adventure from the very first page. Steve's story telling is brilliant and it makes you feel like that you are on an adventure with the characters.
Even though the book is big, it didn't put me off reading it, you just go on a longer journey with the character's and enjoy Steve's writing for longer. Steve's descriptions of places is believable and the characters are likable. Overall, the book is an epic adventure and one that I highly recommend.

Ooooh this book was something else! I absolutely LOVE a Scottish main character and especially when they use the word “bawbag” to describe someone and also “he’s a mighty shitehawk of a man”😆.

I really enjoy Vampire stories and this one has definitely made it up there as one of my new favourites! Miles is such a fascinating main character and the character development of all of the characters throughout the story was fab, I could totally visualise them all. I would love a Church in my life! She is the best! Who wouldn’t want a vampire dog!? Their bond is so special.

A fantastic and exciting story which kept me fully engrossed throughout and I didn’t want it to end!

Oh my goodness!! Guys!! Just look at this glorious front cover!!
I'm so a "judge a book by its cover" kind of girl and this one really did grab my attention.
It's so dark and evil looking but so, so intriguing that I just had to find out what it was all about!

The blurb had me totally hooked at the mention of vampires! I love a good vampire story and knew this wouldn't disappoint as it's actually the second book I've read by this author - and I also loved the first, Atoned.

In a classic style, we see vampires living alongside humans in a fairly realistic, recognisable world - thus eliminating the need for a long world building introduction. But we do get some context into the politics of such an arrangement and learn that The Assembly helps to maintain the peace.

Our main character, Miles, a centuries old vampire, is tasked with policing the criminals of London, human or otherwise. But when he goes on the hunt for what they think is a serial killer, he uncovers a whole load of trouble that takes him across London and beyond.

I loved Miles and his trusty pet companion, Church. They were so well presented and developed throughout the whole storyline - a no nonsense, get the job done pair. Think Turner and Hooch but much, much darker!

I was absolutely all there for the depth of darkness in this book! Almost verging on a horror story but dragged back from the cusp by the level of humour also injected into the narrative.

This was a pretty chunky read - but not unexpected with the fantasy genre, but honestly, this grabs you from page 1 and is so well paced that you will race through it....and still ve left wanting more!

I really, really hope this is just the start of things within this world as I really could read so much more. Looking forward to hearing from Mr McHugh as to whether there will be a book 2 coming soon??.....

The book had an interesting premise. A world where the vampires and humans coexist.
And the actual storyline of the book was interesting; however, it just didn't quite come together for me.
Now I will say that some of the issues that I have with this book, may have been exacerbated because I listened to this on audible; however, I felt like a lot of the dialogue was a bit stilted.
There were some things I did enjoy about the book, Church, some of the slang terms and dialogue, and the overall concept.
I really wanted to like this book more than I did.
I didn't dislike it; however, I just wanted more out of it.
Maybe this is a by product of the other things I've been reading and listening too.
I felt like the main character had so much potential, but even when we get more of his past, we get just the slightest scraping of the surface.
Now I will say that there are definitely aspects of the writing that were very enjoyable. I stopped and had to share a quote with my wife, or with a couple friends. An example is when Miles refers to someone as "a mighty shitehawk of a man." Or mocking some of the paramilitary-esque people as being in military cosplay.
I would be willing to give something else my Mr. McHugh a try, or if there are other novels in this "universe" I would probably give them a read.
Again, I would not say this was a bad novel, or that I didn't like it, just that I wanted more.

Serious Editing Issues

This book has a staggering amount of errors that should have been caught during editing. Running spell check only catches misspelled words. If the word is spelled correctly, it bypasses it, regardless of whether it’s the right word or not. The plot of this book had more holes than a cheese grater. McHugh makes a lot of factual errors, misplacing characters errors, etc. Feels like McHugh just mailed this one in.

Disappointing!

I read McHugh's previous book Atoned and found the same problems as this book, gross spelling errors, bad grammar, disjointed occurrences in the storyline. I'm not so sure Steve McHugh is even writing these books anymore. He's sure not using spellchecker or a proofreader or editor. Don't know if I'll be reading any more of his books. Sad!!!

Miles works as an Arbiter for the Assembly, an organisation which ensures that vampires and humans live alongside each other without any issues. But when vampires start to be made without the Assembly’s consent it is Miles’ job to find the illegal vampires and whilst doing this he uncovers a bigger conspiracy.

I've not read a vampire book in a while and this is what attracted me to this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline because it had everything I wanted in a vampire novel. Initially when I saw the list of characters and the length of the book I was a little worried I wouldn’t be able to follow the story or characters but as soon as I started to read I realised there was nothing to worry about. The world building was easy to follow and unique. I liked the idea of the supernatural world living alongside the human world so although there was a sense of fantasy about the story there was also a sense of reality. The vibes I got whilst reading were a cross between True Blood and Blade and that’s what I loved.

The storyline was fast paced and engaging. I really liked how the author explained the history behind how vampires and humans came to live side by side which helped set the scene. From the beginning we are transported to Miles’ world and his role as an Arbiter. The action scenes were detailed, gory and violent.

Miles was a fantastic character. He is a very old and wise vampire who plays an important role in both the vampire and human world. He is a fearless character that takes his role as an Arbiter very seriously but at the same time he is very fair and knows how to get the answers that he needs in any case he is investigating. I loved his relationship with his dog Church who is a cross between a normal dog and a supernatural vampire dog. Although Miles is a bit of a loner he and Church take care of each other and Church is his contestant companion.

I was sad when the book ended and so sad to say goodbye to Miles. I do hope that Miles appears in another book or a prequel where we learn more about his backstory.

If you love stories about vampires then this is a book I would highly recommend.

A very Steve McHugh book, stories and personalities are similar to other stories, so if a fan, then you are getting more of the same. The story was good but very standard and even though set in a Vampire world with building of myth and powers I felt it could have been any fantasy story. Nice twists and was a fast paced read.

My main issue is the editing of the book and the mistakes (Kindle edition).

Mild Plot Point Spoilers:
At one point we are advised Church returns to normal size, but nothing states he gets any bigger. Another where the wrong character name is used as Yvonne holds her wrist close to Miles mouth, odd when he is in a separate cell, when it should say Oliver. There are a few more like this which take me out of the story and make me think there wasn't much effort in getting it right which made some story details incoherent.

All kinds of stuff going on in Steve Mchugh's first foray into the world of vampires. Humans and vampires have co-existed for centuries, peacefully for the most part.
There are several political factions, 5 vampire Houses, plus human governments and of course there are extremists on both sides.
The protagonist is Miles Watson, a centuries old vampire who is somewhat of a problem solver. His involvement in an illegal vampire turning investigation leads him to Washington state where all Hell is breaking loose.

This was another meh book, but in this case, I don't know what went wrong with it. Or better, I know that I am not a fan of the pace, because it was pretty slow, and the investigative part drags around but all in all, I enjoyed the characters, Miles and Church are pretty nice (Church is the best!!! I love her! And Miles is mysterious and so placid, but also a kick-ass. There is so much to discover about him, and usually I really enjoy this kind of character!!), and some of the others we met here were interesting, especially Charlotte and Amber, but they are not the only one.
And all the parts about vampires were really interesting, too. I especially liked that extreme temperatures are bad for them, for example, and there were some new bits here and there. This part was pretty well done. And yet, I didn't enjoy it so much. It was okay, sure, and I am not disappointed to have read it but still... in the end, I have a lot of unanswered questions, but I am not really motivated to continue this series.

Vampires, murder mystery, urban setting? What's not to like?

I was almost immediately sucked into this book. Good world building in an urban fantasy that doesn't have romance, which was kind of nice for a change. Lots of action and good pacing. Didn't feel like a 400 page book.

The author's take on vampires was really interesting and brought up new and old ideas with twists. It was gritty, kind of gory, and detailed. This book brought out the darker side of vampires and that was really fun, I wish more vampire stories would do this.

The main character is funny and serious at the same time, plus he has a vampire hybrid dog named Church, that is adorable and scary at the same time. Church was nicely written too, smarter than an average dog but also still a dog!

I enjoyed how the author wrote the characters. There were multiple female characters who were important to the plot and they were actually important and not just there to be a romance object of someone or something like that. Literally no romance or really even talking about it much, and that was kind of nice.

My husband was laughing at me when I rambled about this book, vampires, and the plot to him for like an hour. I know it's good when I need to gush about it to someone who knows nothing about it.

I hope this is a series and I can read more. It ended and I am just left wanting more. Definitely pick this up.

Prose (and especially editing) needs improvement, good characterization, good world building, a fairly good story that needs a twist at the end, no theme. 3-stars

Prose was too wordy. McHugh needs to cut out the unnecessary words within a sentence. It would tighten everything up and improve the pace. And the editing for the Kindle version seemed to be entirely absent.

I liked the basic story (yeah, needs a twist or two at the end to keep it fresh). I really liked Church (a boy and his dog) and really wanted to give it another star, but...too many other problems.

Will I read the next in the series? Maybe. Everything is fixable and maybe McHugh (and his editor) does a better job.

I love a good vampire story but this one was just over the top! It was an interesting spin on the vampire narrative. I just loved the relationship between Miles and Church. The Desolate Queen was another great twist.

The writing was great, but there were a few typos and mix ups of names. Steve McHugh is one of my favourite authors of recent times and I’ve read all of his books. I’m hoping there will be another installation in the Miles and Church saga soon!

Meh.
I wanted to like this but it was far too much politicking & world building trying to detail a global vampire society while integrating investigative process & ya know, actual vampires.
At about 30% in when yet another faction was introduced I had to tap out.
Church was a welcome diversion of course!

Oh my goodness... what a book!

The Blurb and artwork drew me in and was the reason for me signing up but when the book arrived, it's just beautiful.

The pages are a lovely thickness, the artwork really pops with the matt effect cover making for a lovely feeling book plus the size is brilliant - around the size of a small hardback.

In the story, we follow Miles (a vampire arbiter) and his trusty pooch companion, Church.

I loved this duo. Miles is an incredibly likeable character with a complex past, but ultimately, he is one who is determined to do the right thing. Church is his right-hand pooch, who I just ADORE!

Given the dark nature of the book, Steve manages to write some dark comical moments into the book surrounding Church... usually spoken by the witty Miles.

I loved the Urban Fantasy element as while it was an alternate reality where vamps and humans try to coexist, there is still that familiarity of Steve talking about places you can relate to/know about.

The story itself is full of suspense, thrill, and mystery as Miles and Church track down the bad guys in the UK before moving on to America.

This book is very exciting and extremely addictive so before you start, make sure you have snacks, a drink, and a few hours spare to devour the story in one!

Highly recommend this book - it's brilliant ❤️!

Thanks so for having me on this book tour (all views on this book are my own.) I've added Steve's other books to my TBR, and I'm hoping this isn't the last time we see Miles and Church!

One thing that I have to make very clear is that I am a huge fan of Mr. McHugh. I have read all of his series (or at least all of the ones that I am aware of) and when I saw that there was a new series beginning, I was so excited. So, I clicked the buy button without a second thought.

I think that I have realized that sometimes the things that are going on in our or the readers personal life at the time can somewhat impact your experience while reading. Why do I say that? Well, because this was the Christmas season, I had a ton of things to get done, my stress levels were though the roof (kind of the antithesis of what we should be experience...isn't that ironic?) well, anyway, I think my patience on delving into a new series may not have been at its best level.

With that being said, I did enjoy the book. I liked the setting, I liked the characters that we were being introduced to and I am actually looking forward to seeing what is going to come next. Unfortunately, I just don't think I can gush as much as I usually do and that I think is on me.

So- let's see what book 2 has to offer and we can figure out if my crazy Christmastime hypothesis is correct :)

Didn’t like it

I read a lot of fantasy books and couldn’t get into this one.

Author added dei and green, bashed religion, etc. I just want to read a good story without politics. I get enough of politics every day.

Needs Editing but still worth a read

Firstly, I love this author's books. Even when the main character gets on my nerves (sorry Avalon series), his writing keeps me gripped. McHugh is one of a handful I don't cringe at paying for. That said, while this book had the expected action and humour there was a bit of spark missing. Maybe it was the editing where Church appeared in a scene when she was actually miles away? When the punctuation had you confused who was speaking or had the lines attached to the wrong character? Or tiny mistakes like using out instead of our. Yes, it's very picky but it pulled me from the book with a harsh crash back to reality. I'll still get the next book, and have my fingers crossed.

good

Miles Watson is a vampire Arbiter, an investigator determined to make sure that the vampire great houses don’t get away with murder. With his loyal sidekick, and vampiric dog Church beside him, he travels the world investigating trouble for The Assembly, those who are in charge of the vampires.

When it is revealed that there was an illegal vampire-making operation in London, and that somehow, something went wrong there resulting in the deaths of vampires and humans alike, it’s Miles and Church who are sent to investigate.

It’s not long before Miles realises that the situation is far worse than he first thought, with corruption reaching through the houses, and through the anti-vampire human organizations. Travelling across the world, from England to the Pacific Northwest, his investigation leads him into very dangerous territory, and into a face off with beings he has never before encountered.

This is a gripping, vampire thriller, with an enigmatic hero and a super intelligent dog that is definitely my favourite character.

This was a well paced tale, with lots of action and gore, as is really expected of a thriller. It is set in an alternative world in which vampires are not only out to the public, but part and parcel of everyday life.

Miles is an interesting person, with a history that makes him admirably suited for the work that he does. Church is a very good girl, and an entertaining addition to the book. I’m actually quite looking forward to seeing what her full story is! They make a great team, which is fortunate, because Arbiters don’t usually work with others.

This was an enjoyable read, a little different from my usual fare, and it was an entertaining diversion. The story was well paced, which is to say the story has some faster action sequences, and slower investigative sequences, which made for an enjoyable read. I did clock Church being in two locations in two separate occasions however— once she was both outside in the snow and resting by the couch, and another time she managed to go down the stairs with Miles, even though she wasn’t there! Despite that, I still recommend the book to the contemporary fantasy/urban fantasy/paranormal thriller lovers out there, who want a book with action, adventure, and don’t mind/prefer a lack of romance.

This is my first book by Steve McHugh, but it will certainly not be the last. I loved everything about this book, from the world the author created to the characters and the storyline itself. I couldn't put it down.
Yes, it's another wild spin on vampires, and many are tired of that theme, I myself stopped reading books with vampires for a long time, thinking I'd read it all and was quite bored with it. This however is different. this isn't another of those stories romanticizing the vampire, this is the opposite actually.
This story shows the dangerous side of vampires and also sometimes humanizes them in some ways. The story follows several characters all coming together, to defeat a common enemy. The main character is Miles.
Miles is an Arbiter, basically an investigator that works under the Assembly, the governing body of the Vampires. He is sent to investigate crimes involving a vampire whether it be a human killed by a vampire, or a vampire killed by a vampire or a vampire killed by humans. He can also be the judge and jury and eleminate the threat if he thinks it is justified. Not many question an Arbiter and once they begin an investigation, not many have the authority to question it or step in his way.
The story started out fast and kept a good pace. Lots of action and it was difficult to put down. The author kept your interest from beginning to end and his character building was incredible. It's so easy to love Miles and his faithful companion Church, a dog that was born from a mother infected with vampire blood. She's smart, loyal and always has his back.
I finished this book quickly and have already gotten the next one in the series. I can't wait to read it.
I don't often review books for many reasons, but when I come across an author with talent like this I have to let everyone know how amazing they are. I highly recommend this book, and yes, I realize it's not for everyone as it can get a bit graphic at times, but if you like a fast paced action story that keeps you glued to the pages, this is a great one to read. You won't be disappointed.
