Ita is a beautiful little weirdo, she likes the dark, she'd like to meet a ghost and she likes scary stories. But she does have a few fears as well, swimming being the biggest one. When she's by the river, it all seems so calm and inviting and she has those lovely scales and when she's at the pool, the anxiety has kicked in (but I do love her frog swimming cap!). This is a beautiful story about overcoming your fears.
A beautifully written and charming story about facing your fears. Ita, along with her parents and brothers move house to be closer to her grandma, in order that her dad can take care of her. Whilst adjusting to her new school, not seeing dad has much and trying to make friends, Ita finds herself feeling very lonely. That is until she discovers the river! Afraid of water, and trying to swim, Ita realises she has her very own “superpower” and after concern for Grandma’s safety, she soon finds herself sharing it with her family. Overcoming her fear of water, and becoming brave enough to share her feelings, Ita quickly forgets about feeling alone.
A lovely story to share and open up discussion with young readers, its themes are discussed in such a way that the reader feels enveloped in a warm hug has they journey through the story. Accompanied by the most beautiful illustrations, it’s the perfect book for those starting out on chapter books or those looking for a comforting read.
This is a really sweet book! For starters, the illustrations are so full of character, they really add to the story rather than being just decoration. It makes the reading experience really fun, especially since the characters are so relatable and realistic.
The topics in it are also great. Ita learns to have confidence in herself, that it's okay to ask for help, and that sometimes adults are having a hard time too. I loved her journey and her family banding together.
This is deeply sweet and the illustrations are absolutely lovely. Slightly marred by tense-switching which made the otherwise smooth prose jerk a bit, but otherwise adorable.
Book #78 of my project to read more children's fiction.
