Otto is a grump who's given up on life following the loss of his wife and wants to end it all. When a young family moves in nearby, he meets his match in quick-witted Marisol, leading to a friendship that will turn his world around.
Reading the screenplay is like experiencing the book or movie again in shorthand.
What’s especially interesting to me are the stage directions. In a play, they’re very brief. Like .. Hamlet enters .. Hamlet exits .. MacDuff brandishes his sword. But in a screenplay they’re like pages from a novel .. Hamlet enters. He is unsure of himself. He doesn’t know what to say or do. He hesitates, watching his uncle pray. To kill or not to kill, that is the question.
You may or may not like the screenplay. But it’s how we get from the novel onto the big screen.
