With This Ring?: A Novella Collection of Proposals Gone Awry

Rate this book
Sometimes Love is Found in the Most Unexpected Places!

Love isn't always a fairy tale, and it doesn't always go as planned. Sometimes the best stories, though, are the ones that are the most unexpected. Join Karen Witemeyer, Mary Connealy, Regina Jennings, and Melissa Jagears for novellas that celebrate the power of love to triumph . . . even when circumstances go awry!

The Husband Maneuver
When ranch foreman Daniel Barrett seems ready to leave her life forever, Marietta Hawkins decides to grab the reins on their relationship. But to have any hope of maneuvering him into a proposal, she has to act fast or risk losing him completely.

Her Dearly Unintended
Josiah Huckabee just wanted to make sure Katie Ellen Watson was safe, but when the only bridge to her farm is washed out, the two find themselves alone. Alone, that is, until a menacing stranger appears. Maybe by pretending to be newlyweds, they'll save their reputations--but can pretending to be in love turn into the real thing?

Runaway Bride
Hired to help Carrie Halsey escape from a dangerous man intent on making her his wife, Big John Conroy never expected the job to interrupt his solitary Texas Ranger life. But now that he's promised to keep Carrie safe, he discovers he may just want to make a few more promises.

Engaging the Competition
Harrison Gray and tomboy Charlotte Andrews have been rivals for years. With Charlotte intended for someone else, it seems they'll never settle their differences until an accident changes things completely. When Charlotte breaks Harrison's glasses--without which he's nearly blind--she must help with his teaching position, and working together forces these former adversaries to reconsider everything.

Witemeyer, Jennings, Connealy, & Jagears.
When I saw those four names on the cover of a novella collection, I knew I was in for a great time! And I wasn't disappointed! :D

As I thought over what words I could use to describe this collection, these came to mind: light, witty, spunky, funny... thoroughly enjoyable!

These novellas are quick, fun reads that just fly by! Yet, they don't feel overly rushed like some novellas do. I really enjoyed reading about some characters who I recognized from other books by these authors-- and I look forward to seeing some of them in other books!

I believe I must say that Karen's novella was my favorite. I had been wanting so badly to read more about Daniel Barrett! And I must say I am quite happy with how his story turned out. ;)

I highly recommend this collection of novellas to anyone who is a fan of these authors (and fans of authors such as Tracie Peterson, Robin Lee Hatcher, and Tamera Alexander), enjoys historic fiction, "historic comedy" (as I call it), or just any kind of good, clean, Christian fiction! :D

I received a copy of this book free from the publisher for a blog tour. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

A special ‘Thank You!’ to author Melissa Jagears, who contacted me to see if I wanted to be a part of this. :)

Just to be clear ladies, if a man compares you to a spirited filly then find another man.

Other than that poor comparative choice in the first novella, I was impressed by what the four seasoned and bestselling authors did in such short spans of time: developing character, motive, humour, warmth and--of course-- the promised proposals (often quite quick and funny), with descriptive aplomb and inventive wordplay.

Historical Western Romance is not usually my go-to genre but I can easily recommend this to CBA readers who want a quick getaway, some adventures on the trail, and the promise of true love.

I won't rate the book or talk about my own story, but I thought I'd tell you about my favorite things about the other 3 stories in this collection:

Karen's story, The Husband Maneuver, has a fun dime novel excerpt at the beginning of each chapter that is used very creatively at the end.

Regina's story, Her Dearly Unintended, shows you exactly what strange and unexpected things can happen when the Lord let's that creek rise!

Mary's story, Runaway Bride, interlaces an extended epilogue for some of her books with a marriage of convenience story with new characters that steal your heart right quick.

Excuse me while I gush a bit. I thought this was going to be four novellas from some of my favorite authors. I had no clue that each story is connected to other series/books that I loved! It's officially my second five-star rating of the year.

Karen Witemeyer's comes first. For those of you who loved her latest, "A Worthy Pursuit," this is the tale of "Dead-Eye Dan" Daniel Barrett of one-time dime-novel notoriety and his boss's daughter Marietta. She is thoroughly smitten with him and is certain that she'll lose him forever if he leaves for his new ranch without her winning his heart. If you've read the book, you have a pretty good inkling of what he thinks of her, but there's a reason he can't speak of it. This short story tells their tale and is interspersed with hilarious excerpts from the Dead-Eye Dan dime novel.

Second comes Regina Jennings's. It's connected to the Ozark Mountain series and focuses on Josiah Huckabee, now all grown up and no longer quite so much a daredevil. I've devoured both books in the series and have promptly shared them with my sister, so it was a delight to find these familiar scenes again and meet the spunky Katie Ellen, who is quite sure she has something to prove to the world, and will be outdone neither by the mysterious guest nor by Josiah's eagerness to protect her.

Third is Mary Connealy's. This is connected to two series, Trouble in Texas and Kincaid Brides. Big John Conroy infuriates a villain who had planned on marrying Audra Kincaid's younger sister by stealing the lady in question right out of town, and the two (John and Carrie) flee into the night with Carrie's young brother in tow. While I often have felt that Connealy's strength is not in the novella form, this one was actually quite good, and I enjoyed the tale.

Last, definitely not least, comes Melissa Jagears's. Charlotte, better known as Charlie, has to save her parents' failing ranch after her father dies, her mother loses her grip on reality, and a ruthless neighbor sabotages her ranch in an attempt to get her land. She is ready to make a deal with the devil's family to save her home for her mother...until Harrison Gray rides back into her life just ahead of a tornado. His glasses get broken, and she ends up helping him teach until the new pair comes in...but can they understand each other in time? This story is connected to the upcoming Teaville Moral Society books, and introduces Lydia King—heroine of the first book, according to the synopsis. I definitely will be looking forward to August, when I can find out what happens to Lydia, and if she finds her Mr. Darcy!

Many thanks for my copy, provided by Melissa Jagears and Bethany House in exchange for my influence in promoting it. That is an exchange I am very happy to make!

Although I love full-length novels, I must admit that I am also a fan of novellas. Sometimes it is so nice to read a shorter story, especially when it is well-written and feels complete. That is exactly what this collection contains. Each of these novellas was very nicely crafted, presenting stories that made me feel that I had peeked into the characters’ lives and gotten to enjoy their special moments. All four of the stories contained interesting situations, detailed characters, and a satisfying resolution at the end.

The Husband Maneuver by Karen Witemeyer – What a fun story! I loved the way each chapter began with an excerpt from a dime novel titled Dead-Eye Dan and the Outlaws of Devil’s Canyon. This was the book that the heroine of the story was reading and ties into the novella beautifully. Daniel and Marietta were great characters and the attraction was flowing through this story! It was wonderful from start to finish.

Her Dearly Unintended by Regina Jennings – This novella can stand alone from the Ozark Mountain Romance series that it is connected with. But if you have read books one and two of the series, you will be happy to see what happens with Katie Ellen and Josiah. This was such an enjoyable story, full of misunderstandings, mishaps, and a pretty amazing kiss! I loved the situation these two characters were trying to navigate through.

Runaway Bride by Mary Connealy – It was so much fun to see many characters that I had previously met in other books by this author show up in this story. The novella stands alone if you haven’t read other books by Mary Connealy before, but I was very happy to find out that Runaway Bride was Big John Conroy’s story! The romantic tension in this novella is palpable and I just absolutely loved the way the relationship progressed between Carrie and John. This was a very exciting and romantic story that I didn’t want to see end.

Engaging the Competition by Melissa Jagears – What a unique and absolutely wonderful novella this was! The author did such a good job at creating two characters who have flaws, but are utterly likable, as well. Harrison and Charlotte (Charlie) have great chemistry, a problematic history, and I had to laugh at the fact that their first kiss wasn’t all that great for them! I really enjoyed this story and loved watching these two characters grow so much from beginning to end.

This is a great novella collection that I definitely recommend to fans of historical fiction.

I absolutely loved all these stories! They were each so interesting and unique with the angle of the plot, and all the stories have vibrant characters and settings. We get to revisit great characters from other books by Karen Witemeyer and Mary Connealy, but they are perfect as stand alone stories too. There is a fantastic element of humor throughout which kept me smiling as I read the predicaments the couples found themselves in. And the romance? So wonderful! I enjoyed all the novellas equally and highly recommend this collection!

A cute novella collection! I enjoyed them all, but some did seem a bit too short (possibly because I just wanted the story to continue ;)).

I think my favorite novella was Regina Jennings' -- I absolutely loved it!! The last one was also very cute.

All in all, I do recommend this book if you like historical romance with some humor.

Side note: my NetGalley copy had some glitches where pages would disappear and then later appear, so it was somewhat tough to read and did hamper my enjoyment to some degree. :(

I loved this collection of novellas! I think this genre is probably my all time favorite. I was so pleased that each and everyone of these stories were entertaining, charming and sweet! I had read all of these authors previously. I don't think I could choose a favorite, they were all great and I was sad for this book to end. But I will definitely be looking for more by these authors.

Well. That was disappointing. :( I was hoping there wouldn’t be many kisses, but instead there was detailed kisses in almost every novella.
The first one, “The Husband Maneuver”, had some cute parts and I remembered the characters from “A Worthy Pursuit”, but there was just too many kisses, touches, temptations & feelings.
Novella number #2, “Her Dearly Unintended”, just felt awkward. The stranger gave me creeps, and I’m still not believing he’s who he says he is. Katie Ellen & Josiah’s bickering got on my nerves fast and they weren’t fooling anyone that they were married.
“Runaway Bride” was very confusing to me! Everything felt rushed and the romance came out of left field. Definitely not a fan of the marriage of convenience and all the hints.
The last one, “Engaging the Competition” was cleaner than the rest, but I was annoyed (yet again) at the main characters bickering and competing with each other. It was very over-the-top.

Great collection! These authors each present an engaging novella with humor, romance, adventure, and faith. Each story is part of a larger series which you won't be able to resist checking out but they can also be read as standalones. Whether you've never heard of these authors or they are some of your favorites, this book is an enjoyable read and I'm happy to have it on my shelf for an entertaining pick-me-up anytime!

Sometimes you just need a lighter story with a guaranteed happy ending. This collection offers 4 such ones, with the added bonus of western comedy.

The Husband Maneuver by Karen Witemeyer

This story was such fun! It’s been a while since I’ve ready anything by Karen, so this was a pleasant reminder of her humorous and skillful style. I liked that the main characters already had a history together. Daniel had his reason for not acting on his feelings for Etta, and once it was revealed, you would agree it was a very honorable reason! Which made me like him even more. This was one of my top 2 favorites in the collection!

Her Dearly Unintended by Regina Jennings

This was a western situation comedy with a bit of depth. Full of layers of legitimate, believable misunderstandings concerning both friendship and love, it told a coming-of-age (and maturity) story. With sass! I particularly liked the setting in the Missouri Ozarks because it is quite close to home for me!

Runaway Bride by Mary Connealy

This one is my other favorite from this collection. Hilarious at times, it has Mary’s signature humor (if you’re a fan of Connealy, I promise you’ll like it). I loved seeing familiar characters from the Trouble in TX and Kincaid Brides series, though new readers might be a little overwhelmed from 1 of the short passages introducing them! My favorite part was how John and Carrie’s relationship progressed. Their almost instant chemistry and subsequent fast-moving relationship was still believable. And, their mutual shyness-then-love story was so sweetly told by Mary. I only wish this one was a little longer because I could’ve read more about these crazy characters and their friends!

Engaging the Competition by Melissa Jagears

This was overall a cute story with an unexpected and pleasant take on the genre — especially with the reversal of roles for the male and female lead. She was the rancher and tough cowgirl and he was the studious school teacher. The hero has the unique impediment of extremely poor eyesight. I was anxious to see where Melissa would take that from the story setup. It proved to be an effective plot device that propelled the characters together and taught a lesson in “being enough”: your pride shouldn’t cause you to prove yourself to others if it, in turn, belittles them.

Some of my favorite authors. This was so fun! My favorites are Her Dearly Unintended, about Katie Ellen and Josiah ("It was that Josiah Huckabee interfering with her business again") after the bridge washes out they pretend to be newlyweds when a scary stranger shows up at her home. Also Runaway Bride with a Texas Ranger helping his friend's sister's sister-in-law's sister Carrie.

I started reading this book back in the summer when I lived in Waco. I moved before I could finish reading the 4th novella. My new library didn't have it, and I waited a few months to buy it. Anyway, long story. I loved it! I will be searching to read more books by these 4 authors. Sweet clean adult romance is my current favorite type of book to read.

Unpredictable Plans precede Unexpected Proposals!

Life and love can be vastly unpredictable which can add plenty of intrigue and sparks. This is exactly what transpires in these four novellas of love and proposals emerging from unforeseen circumstances!

The Husband Maneuver by Karen Witemeyer
What’s a gal to do when for far too long she’s pined after the foreman of her daddy’s ranch, while her continuous attempts to demonstrate what a great little wife she’d make—goes completely unnoticed? Well when Marietta hears this foreman talk about moving on to his own homestead, she realizes her window of opportunity to orchestrate a proposal from him must happen when her father and the ranch hands leave for the cattle drive. While Marietta’s foreman stays behind to look after her father’s ranch and move his mule stock to his new spread, she plans to leave her Aunt’s place early to go back to her father’s ranch unaccompanied. Sounds like the perfect plan, right? What a shock for the foreman to find his boss’s daughter and himself alone at the ranch—the little lady he’s trying to get away from! Absolutely loved this captivating, enchanting, toe-curling Texas romance!

Her Dearly Unintended by Regina Jennings
Generous rains, gushing rivers, and a stranded cow… Josiah relishes a great adventure and he found it and a whole lot more at the Ozark homestead of Katie Ellen’s. With her parents away, the perfectionist Katie insists she needs no-one. But then her plans go astray when Josiah and a creepy stranger become stranded at her farm when the bridge washes out. Josiah has always pestered Katie rather than allowing her to know his true feelings but he’s thinking he needs to modify that soon. Perhaps pretending to be her husband in front of the grim-talking stranger in order to protect Katie and her reputation—will give him that chance. But Katie has been hurt by Josiah before, and keeps those walls erected. Can these two find a way to work together to keep safe? What an intriguing, engaging, and delightful tale that demonstrates we don’t always have to do it alone.

Runaway Bride by Mary Connealy
When Carrie’s poor excuse for a father, arranges for her to marry the loathsome Damien Kearse to absolve himself from a large gambling debt, Carrie must clandestinely flee her home and the imminent wedding. Escaping with her younger brother, Carrie literally runs into Texas Ranger, Big John Conroy who was sent to deliver Carrie to Colorado. He becomes Carrie’s hero many times over as he comes up against Damien’s men and unscrupulous bounty hunters along the trail. Before too long Big John realizes he needs to make a detour and enlist the help of his war buddies, the Regulator’s. Damien Kearse doesn’t take kindly to having pride stomped on and pulls out all stops. Will Big John be able to keep her, and his heart, safe from this little lady he’s protecting? Not many can pen such an entertaining story infused with genuine western flavour throughout—as Mary Connealy can do so efficaciously!

Engaging the Competition by Melissa Jagears
When Harrison Gray is asked by his concerned Reverend to talk to Harrison’s childhood friend about her upcoming marriage, he figures he oughta do it regardless of his mixed feelings. While tomboy and ranch owner Charlotte (Charlie) Andrews has always fascinated Harrison, she’s also been an annoying itch with her competitive nature. He’s given her a wide berth ever since she humiliated him in a shooting competition a decade ago, but now he needs to man up and ensure all is well. When the bespectacled teacher Harrison who can’t see anything past a blur without his glasses, has them broken by Charlie, she offers to help him in the classroom until he gets a new pair. Will this half-blind teacher and his assistant learn a few lessons along the way and have their eyes opened? Or are there too many obstacles to trip them up? Wonderfully engaging story of learning from each other and discovering your worth!

I found a WONDERFUL gift in my mailbox. Thank you BHP and Melissa Jagears for this book! I squealed with so much delight and excitement when I opened the package, my husband made fun of me. I quickly sat down to begin reading, food and unpacking had to wait. As I read I knew that some of the characters were from other novels by these great authors but I found each story to be complete on it's own, nothing was missing. I honestly love each novella. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves Old west period romance stories. If you are someone who is worried about these being written by Christian authors, don't be. There is some going to church and praying but mostly just clean, fun, wholesome reading. You will enjoy it!
*The Husband Maneuver by Karen Witemeyer. I loved the Dead Eye Dan dime novels at the beginning of each chapter even though the real life Dan did not. I really liked Marietta's maneuvers to get Dan's attention when all he could do was think about her but not let her know. I loved the ending.
*Her Dearly Unintended by Regina Jennings. I probably have a warped sense of humor but I found this story so funny! Poor Katie Ellen with OCD and the disastrous messes made in her house. I was glad to see that she learned that sometimes a mess is ok and that she and Josiah overcame their differences to become a team. Some tense moments were had but this was a delightful read.
*Runaway Bride by Mary Connealy. This one had a lot more suspense in it than the others. Big John helping Carrie escape in the night, Keeping her and her brother safe from the nasty old man her father traded her to for his gambling debts. Travelling and gun battles ensued. Mary managed to put a lot of characters and heart into this novella. It was nice to see Big John find room in his life for love after all.
*Engaging The Competition by Melissa Jagears. Wow! Melissa has created some memorable characters here. Poor myopic Harrison and stubborn tomboy Charlie. Too close in the root cellar during a tornado, then too close in the classroom as Charlie is helping Harrison teach after his glasses are broken. I loved how their story unfolded and seeing the many years of hurt and misunderstandings come to light and how truth and love wins in the end. Not everything is a competition ;)
I received this book as a gift from the author and publisher. No review was required. I will now pass it on for someone else to enjoy, well, after I read it again. It was such fun!

The Husband Maneuver by Karen Witemeyer

Sweet romance with the intensity of unrequited love (or so both hero and heroine think.) Marietta's dreams of a happily ever after are in dire jeopardy. She no longer has the luxury of waiting for Daniel to make the first move. With her future happiness at stake, she takes matters into her own hands with comedic -- and toe-curling -- results.

Her Dearly Unintended by Regina Jennings

Be prepared to be plunged straight into disaster in this fast paced romantic comedy. Love the bickering banter between this incorrigible couple. Once friends and neighbours, Katie Ellen and Josiah hit a rocky patch in their early teens and it's been gloves off ever since. No wonder it takes a natural disaster and some divine intervention to get them back on the straight and narrow. Delightfully funny.

Runaway Bride by Mary Connealy

Texas Ranger John Conroy is the stuff tall tale legends are made of. Just the man to come to the aid of a damsel in distress. I ducked and dived my way through this action-packed love story, dodging every bullet right along with Carrie and John. Connealy's trademark comedic timing creates some side-splitting-laugh-out-loud moments and provides relief from all the tension. Wild West perfection.

Engaging the Competition by Melissa Jagears

Jagears mixes things up with her sharp-shooting rancher heroine and her bespectacled scholarly hero. Childhood friends and would-be sweethearts, a breakdown in adolescent communications has left 'Charlie' and Harrison at odds right into adulthood. But then the subject of marriage comes up and the games begin! Be prepared for lots of twists and turns before this hero and heroine manage to make their way to the promise of a happily ever after.

I picked up this novella collection with high expectations. I've read all of these authors before and love their styles and stories. With This Ring did not disappoint. It was just as entertaining and romantic as I had hoped it would be.

Each individual novella read so sweet and smoothly, with some surprises thrown in. The heroes and heroines were all fun and unique. As the reader, I enjoyed stepping into these pioneer days and watching these western folks figure out how to make love work.

The characteristic wit and charm that I've already come to admire from these authors was easily found in this work as well. The End always arrived too quickly and I found myself wishing the stories could go on a little longer. To me, that's the sign of a successful novella collection. ;)

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to Regina Jennings and Bethany House for my copy.

i grabbed this collection because the first story was a RWA RITA Nominee. It was cute enough and was the best in the collection.. There is almost always a lot of variation in short story collections as there is in this one.

4 stars:
The Husband Manuever (Texas)
Runaway Bride (Texas)

3 stars:
Her Dearly Intended (Missouri)

2 stars:
Engaging the Competition (Kansas)

Each story has a mishap and a happy ending. There's a fictional series based on a character, ranchers, cowboys, lawmen, broken glasses, a washed out bridge, and strangers. Some have some humor, too. I liked some of the main characters. They were in the stories that I liked.

Would have been two stars but I enjoyed Karen Witemeyer's story, the first novella of the book, so I gave it another star. The second and fourth stories were okay. The third story I skimmed because I just couldn't get into it.

As you might expect from the title of this collection, there are (at least) four proposals, some misunderstandings, unexpected developments, and humorous situations to be found in the pages of these four novellas:

The Husband Maneuver by Karen Witemeyer

Etta has loved Dan for years. When she hears he is leaving her father's ranch she uses the dime novels he hates (the hero is based on him) as inspiration and hatches a plan to get him to propose, risking her reputation in the process. Of course, not all goes according to plan, especially when you have a man who plans for the worst and a woman who hopes for rainbows.

Marietta (Etta) Hawkins and Daniel Barrett were secondary characters in Witemeyer's most recent full length novel, A Worthy Pursuit. These were characters that called out for their story to be told, and having an excerpt of a Dead-Eye Dan dime store novel start each chapter was so much fun. I particularly liked how a Dead-Eye Dan novel is used at the end, and that the ending is so satisfying.

Her Dearly Unintended by Regina Jennings

Katie Ellen is alone and in charge while her parents are away. A storm and a swollen, raging river strand her and her neighbor Josiah alone. The arrival of an unexpected visitor forces Katie Ellen to play along when Josiah tells the man that they are husband and wife. While this is something Josiah would like to be true, he has a lot of work to do if Katie Ellen is ever going to be convinced. If, that is, their visitor doesn't become violent first.

Ellen Watson and Josiah Huckabee were childhood friends when they were introduced in the second Ozark Mountain Romance novel, At Love's Bidding. Here they are grown up, and their characters have developed to reflect that growing up. Katie Ellen is the most changed, in that she likes to be in complete control of her environment. This seemed a bit of an extreme reaction to the events that caused it, but it does add an interesting element to the story. A very fun story with a bit of action, a bit of romance and a bit of Benedict & Beatrice.

Runaway Bride by Mary Connealy

Carrie Halsey and her 16 year old brother Isaac are fleeing Houston the night before their father marries her off to pay a gambling debt. Big John Conroy, a Texas Ranger and former Andersonville Prison Regulator, is determined to get them to Rawhide, Colorado and their older sister Audra Kincaid. But things go wrong and they find themselves in Broken Wheel, Texas, fighting a small army of hired guns.

Incorporating characters from two earlier series, this story was a bit confusing at one point (even for Carrie) unless you are already familiar with how these characters are related to each other. Mary Connealy's usual blend of comedy and cowboys is present here, and it is a very enjoyable story whether you have read the related books or not.

Engaging the Competition by Melissa Jagears

Harrison Gray, local schoolteacher, is nearly blind without his glasses. When they are accidentally ruined in her barn, Charlotte "Charlie" Andrews helps him out in the classroom until a new pair arrives, taking time away from her ranch and preparing for her upcoming marriage of convenience. A marriage with the brother of the man that had been a classmate, and schoolyard bully, of Harrison and Charlie.

This was the one story that I put off reading, partly because the first full length novel in this new Teaville Moral Society series will not be released until early August, and partly because I was a little afraid that I would not love it as much as I did Melissa Jagears' Unexpected Brides series. No need to worry, though, as this was the one novella that actually made me laugh aloud. While some elements of this story did bring to mind the novella from that series, these are definitely different characters in very different circumstances. I'm looking forward to more of this series.

I was so excited when I found out there was going to be a collection of novellas by two of my go-to Christian Historical Romance authors, Karen Witemeyer and Melissa Jagears, and two more that are quickly becoming go-to authors of that genre, Mary Connealy and Regina Jennings. My expectations were high, for the stories themselves as well as my personal level of enjoyment. Happily, those expectations were met and I can count this as one of the books I would highly recommend to those who enjoy novellas that combine faith, romance, adventure, and a dash of humor. 4.5/5 stars.

What can go wrong?! Apparently a lot - for the characters! I love this novella collection. I mean, how could you not? Just look at the list of authors! OK, fangirl-ing aside, each story brings out the spunk that these authors are known for in their books.

In The Husband Manuever, there's basically a story within a story, starting off from the ever popular dime novels back in the day. Also present in Karen's most recent novel, A Worthy Pursuit, which really is worthy of pursuit (click on the title for my review), The Husband Maneuver follows directly behind A Worthy Pursuit in terms of timeline. The characters, Daniel and Marietta originally appeared in the first book and gave readers quite an impression. So I'm thrilled to read about their adventure to matrimony. Despite it being a novella, Karen still manages to give us a story that speaks to the heart of readers and a bit of conflict for the characters to figure out. Inner thoughts gave way to understanding. I particularly enjoy reading about Etta's "maneuvers", and how schemes and plans don't always pan out the way we want them to. And when all hope seems to be lost, there might just be a little sunshine down the road.

In terms of connection, Her Dearly Intended also follows characters from Regina's other novels, A Most Inconvenient Marriage and At Love's Bidding. We meet Josiah again, a punk (in a funny and sweet way) in all definitions from the other novels, all grown up and ready for his own love story to come to fruition. The bickering between Josiah and Katie Ellen are a hoot! The old saying, "opposites attracts" comes to mind, but really all started as misunderstanding. Each harbors love for the other, but for reasons in the past and present, a mental wall have slowly made it's way up. Will these two be able to chip away years of doubt and anguish, and work together when danger knocks on the door?

Did I really miss all those Kincaid Bride and Trouble in Texas series?!?! We meet many characters along the way in this novella, and they all connect somehow to Mary's other series, but don't worry, you won't feel lost. I didn't, but I do want to check out the other series. As Carrie and her younger brother, Isaac was rescued by Texas Ranger, Big John, they've encountered trouble that requires some help from John's friends, and there we meet the Kincaids and others. Even for the amount of characters, we are still rapt into Carrie and John's story as they consider a marriage of convenience to ward off Carrie's dangerous pursuers. A fun read with a head strong hero and heroine. Will they butt heads or will this short stop be permanent?

Melissa's Engaging the Competition does not follow any story, but it does introduce us to the characters of her next novel, and I can't wait! No worries, this also is a standalone story, and you will enjoy it just as much, with hopes for the main character of Melissa's next novel. We start off with tomboy Charlie already engaged to August, part of the Whittaker clan, which are bullies in town. A marriage of convenience to help Charlie be able to keep her house and property, financially. With no love involved, will this story end as you wish? Jump in Harrison, a childhood friend and town teacher who've always been nice to Charlie, until a misunderstanding and pride years ago drifted them apart. Unexpectedly, a storm and a pair of broken glasses brings Charlie and Harrison together, and maybe a chance to finally see clearly each other and the events of the past. Charlie is a head-strong character, and somewhat unlikable, but by end, you will understand the soft side of who she is. What I do find a tad bit disconcerting is the level of intimate interactions (kissing/hugging/touching) between Charlie and Harrison while Charlie's an engaged woman! Besides being part of a big clan of bullies, August doesn't seem so bad, and somewhat honorable, except that he went along with a marriage of convenience because of her property. They do however admit their transgression, and I think in all, a good story about pride and love.

With wit, charm and ingenuity, the authors of With this Ring? gave us a fabulous collection and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good book.
