Thuggish!

With a fulfilling biography of each author, you get a little information about their experiences in their everyday lives to help you get to know them.

Of course the quickest way, and the most effective way to know who they are is from their writing.

And I have definitely found a few favorites whose work l will be looking for, such as Justin Porter, whose story , Carriage Thieves, is a big hoot.

All of the stories are very good and I just can’t wait to read the next in this series, so just stay turned…

Fifty-fifty on this issue. Is it just coincidence that I liked the first three stories better than the last five? First three stories were really strong: livewire in medias res beginnings, concrete and interesting details, backstory layered through and linked with the present action, surprising and satisfying endings. That's the recipe right there.

I'm delighted with the Thuglit series, and what the editors have done consistently throughout is to present a varied, balanced lineup. Again (and this is the fourth in my reading order) I was consistently happy. If I had to point to any two, however, they would be "Just Like Maria" and "The Carriage Thieves." The latter, an entry from Justin Porter, is quite different from his "One More Day Can't Hurt" (a standout for me in Thuglit #5). Its tone is very funny, though in a more direct way, whereas "One More Day" was overall more somber with notes of levity. Porter's love of offbeat New York City history again shines through.

Going through the anthology in order. Although some reviewers found #2 less intriguing tthan the initial entry, I liked it better. I love plup, but sometimes there is too much #2 is much more balanced. There wasn't one entry that I didn't like. Those that caught my fancy especially, though are Just Like Maria, the Carriage Thieves (sort of an adult Ransom of Red Chief) The Name Between the Talons, and being in a somewhat similar situation as our heroine, Participatory Democracy. Politicians take heed!

Also, Part 2 of Hard-Bounce. Really getting into it.

I'll be hitting Thuglit 3 after thh first of the year when I can borrow it borrow it (free) from amazon.

Second volume of noir stories. I liked the one about the bus. Humorous, not as dark as the rest. But I enjoyed them all.
