Kat Walker

Caller No. 5

Rate this book
This one goes to all you Brad’s out there. An interwoven story unfolds with Sheriff Bucky Ballard, his Deputy cousin, Busby “Bus” Ballard, and Forensic Investigator Fiona Peach and her private team on the trail of Kat Walker, a travel nurse with a deadly hobby.

“What’s your name darlin’?” the Love Doctor asked.

“It’s Kat, from Sugardale, Georgia.”

The chloroform was starting to wear off as Brad made more noises and coughed against his gag. He moaned as Kat pushed herself to stand and he wailed when his eyes focused below. His face was red and flushed as he hung over the side. He cried and attempted to maneuver his way out from his restraints. To no avail, he couldn’t pull loose but only tightened the knots. His muscles were taxed from being drugged, dragged, starved, and shut up in the trunk for hours on end. He spit out his socks and looked around until he saw Kat standing over him.

“It’s you. You Nutty Bitch.”

Caller No. 5 pulled me in right from the start and did not let go. If you love small-town thrillers packed with secrets, tension, and a slow unraveling of past mysteries, this book is for you. Elizabeth Blackwood's writing is as gripping and atmospheric as Lisa Jewell's or Megan Miranda's. If you enjoy their books, you'll likely enjoy hers as well..

The story follows a woman whose world is upended when she wins a radio contest… and the prize isn’t at all what she expected. Instead of a fun windfall, she finds herself tangled in a decades-old mystery that forces her to confront her past, her town’s buried secrets, and the people she thought she could trust. The twists kept me on my toes, and the pacing was perfect. It builds tension without ever feeling rushed.

Stephanie Triplett’s narration was fantastic. Her southern accent felt completely authentic to the character, making the audiobook feel even more immersive. If you enjoy audiobooks, this one is a great listen.

I highly recommend this book if you love suspenseful mysteries with complex characters and plenty of unexpected turns. I was completely hooked from beginning to end.

great writing

Very pleased that I finally got around to reading this book. I’ve been following Elizabeth and vice versa for months on facebook. I’ve been so busy writing myself, and acting in a play for the first time. Finally found some time and devoured this book in two nights. I love the character development and descriptiveness. Wonderful job. I look forward to more.

I enjoyed this small town murder mystery very much! First, Elizabeth Blackwood excelled at bringing each character to life. Their individual personalities just leapt right off the pages. I really liked Bucky as a main character, and the close relationship between him and his cousin Bus was endearing. I want to learn more about the Love Doctor on the radio and I hope he makes an appearance in the sequel! The scenery of this book was so vivid. I felt like I was in that small town, it was very similar to one I frequently visit in the Pocono mountains. Excellent description of everything in this book- I enjoyed each scene including an Oktoberfest celebration! This book can be graphic but it’s also FUN! Kat was an excellent villain, whoa man. I can’t write too much about her or I’ll go off and ruin the book for those who haven’t read it yet…*duct tape my own mouth so I don’t spoil anything*…(muffled) go get this book and see for yourself, you won’t regret it! I can’t wait to read “Sugar”!!!

ENGAGING. SHOCKING. GREAT READ.
This book made me smile, cringe (in a good way) and keep reading. The southern sayings and humor resonate with me, as a fellow southerner. A travel nurse goes to rural areas to care for patients that are too bad off to travel. She cares for them with compassion. But what does her history consist of? What does her trauma lead her to do? Traveling all over helps you keep a low profile to stay on the move, easier to escape capture  If you like a strong female, revenge serial killer lead, with some sass, you will love Kat. When you don't get the closure you need from a past trauma experience, who knows how you will respond? I even found myself rooting for the villain. Definitely check out this book! Five star read for me! Also, the author is super funny to engage with!

I was assigned this book through 'adopt an author' in a fb group, and I am so glad! I had seen it posted a few times, but hadn't got to reading it, but this was the kick I needed to bump it up my list, and you should too.
It was a well written, engaging story. If it's possible to say a book involving murder was fun, then this was fun.
It took a few chapters to get all the main characters sorted in my head, but I can't be mad about good character development! Once I did, the author took me on a wild ride, filled with revenge (and who doesn't love some good, old fashioned revenge).

There will be a sequel coming, and I will definitely be reading that, upon it's release!

🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is a wild and intense thriller story! The author does a great job with the writing and character development. I found the storyline to be very original and unique! The story is entertaining with a little suspense and torture added in on all of the “Brads”.
It’s a book that sucks you in and you don’t want to stop reading/listening.
I listened to the audio version and it was a fun book to listen to!
Thank you to Elizabeth Blackwood for an audio copy of this great book!

Caller No 5 has a well built character system with likable main characters. The story is well developed and has a great flow. It’s an easy read that will engross you. I found myself feeling sorry for Kat and having sympathy at times for her, a difficult task to do as she is the “bad guy”! if you enjoy psychological thrillers and murder mystery, give this book a try!

SUGAR is the sequel and I am eager to read! Well done, Elizabeth!

I loved it. 😊
The book is well written, and the story is exciting and intense. Characters are complex, each holding stories you want to discover. Real page turner!

There are a bunch of yuck moments, so if you can't handle a CSI episode, I would not recommend it to you...

Caller No.5 by Elizabeth Blackwood was an excellent debut, well written and great character development. You certainly do not want to get on the wrong side of the knowledgeable travel nurse Kat Walker, who is meticulous in plotting revenge. Kat hasn't had an easy life and seeks retribution for that reason. Looking forward to more from this author and what Kat will get up to next. Watch out all the Brads out there!

Okay I'm going to handle this by writing the things I found good followed by the things I found not so good.

The Good: Elizabeth is talented, very talented. I think the talent is a little raw, but certainly there. I found the characters to be very well thought out and likable. I especially like the creative idea of having a deputy with down syndrome and she honestly tugged at my heart strings with him, he was my favorite character. She also showed some diversity by having a forensic analyst with Asperger's syndrome. In the future if this turns into a series I would like to know more about the 2 members of Peaches' team.

The Concept is very well thought out and creative. There were no really slow parts and I think the book was very well paced. As a writer myself I've had people want me to read their writing and hardly any of them had the talent of Elizabeth.

The Not So Good: Before I begin i want to note that most of these things apply to me PERSONALLY and might not be an issue for other readers. My biggest issue and this might seem odd coming from a guy was the sex scene. It was a bit too raw and graphic for my taste and seemed a little out of place for the genre. It would have been better placed in erotica. Sex scenes can be tricky and sometimes less is more. I think different terms than balls and a few others could have been used.

I said that all of the characters were likable. I meant except for one and that is the main character. I'm not sure if the writer meant for Kat to be likable or not, but she does not appeal to me. I mean knowing her past I can sympathize and understand her, but she still needs SERIOUS help.

One of the scenes in which Kat is torturing her victim was a little stomach turning and very dark. That's a personal thing though. It dealt with force feeding and vomit. I watch Saw and can do blood and gore all day long. That was just a personal thing.

Overall this is a very good first novel. I give it a 3.5 overall rounded up to 4. I wish Elizabeth a lot of success and I will be reading a sequel if it comes out.

Frankly, I’m at a loss…

I literally have no idea how to review this book without ruining a most unique experience for potential readers, and doesn’t that seem exactly like something that Brad might do? I mean, seriously. What a jerk.

*sigh*

I can but try…

To say that Kat Walker is damaged goods is an understatement. She’s an antihero with a self-righteous agenda, and nothing will stop her from pursuing her goals. Not me, not you, and certainly not Sheriff Bucky Ballard, the chief lawman of a withering mountain town that makes Mayberry look absolutely metropolitan. His ragtag team of local yokels, including his big-hearted cousin, Busby—Bus, for short—provides a most colorful backdrop in which our increasingly jaw-dropping story unfolds.

At first, I thought Blackwood was getting a little too fancy-pants with her prose, finding inventive ways to express some of the most trivial of events, but it doesn’t take long to figure out that the prose is practically a character unto itself, infusing this dark and twisty story with a unique narrative voice that is practically hypnotic in its allure. While the characters are somewhat stereotypical, their characterization is anything but, and before long, I was fully invested in their daily existence, walking right alongside them as their simple lives are suddenly upended with the startling discovery that someone is torturing and murdering men in the most inexplicably gruesome ways.

Wickedly witty and sharply realized, this was a really great read that I enjoyed immensely—one of my favorite reads of 2025, in fact. So, you might be wondering—what’s with the four stars? Creatively, it’s an absolute gem, but it really, REALLY deserves another good round of editing to iron out a number of grammatical and formatting issues that were fairly prevalent throughout the book. It’s just simple stuff that could easily be fixed, adding a final polish to a story that absolutely deserves it.

Can’t wait to see what happens in its just-released sequel, “Sugar.”

Elizabeth Blackwood’s Caller No. 5 is a gripping psychological thriller with a pitch-black sense of humor and a narrative that keeps you on edge from start to finish. The story weaves between Sheriff Bucky Ballard, his deputy cousin Busby, and Forensic Investigator Fiona Peach, as they hunt down Kat Walker—a travel nurse with a chilling secret.

Kat is a character you won’t soon forget. Equal parts charming and terrifying, her “hobby” makes for some of the most unsettling and darkly fascinating scenes I’ve read in a while. The interplay between the investigators’ procedural work and Kat’s twisted escapades creates a tense, fast-paced story with plenty of twists to keep readers guessing.

Blackwood’s writing shines in her ability to balance dark humor with suspense. Moments like Brad’s harrowing (and disturbingly humorous) ordeal bring the tension to a boil, all while pulling the reader deeper into Kat’s warped mind. The dialogue feels sharp and authentic, and the Southern setting adds a unique flavor to the story.

While the pacing is relentless and the characters are memorable, some parts of the plot feel slightly rushed, particularly when it comes to the investigators' side of the story. I would have loved a bit more depth to Fiona Peach and her team, as their dynamic felt secondary compared to Kat’s riveting narrative.

Despite this minor critique, Caller No. 5 is a highly entertaining thriller that fans of dark, morally ambiguous stories will devour. Blackwood’s ability to blend tension, humor, and shocking twists makes this a standout read. If you’re looking for something darkly captivating and unapologetically twisted, Caller No. 5 delivers.

Caller No. 5 by Elizabeth Blackwood is an intense and dark thriller with a unique storyline and characters.
I always value the difference and emotions. At some point, I kind of had a bit of a Mindf*uck series vibe. The story is nothing alike but some vibe was there!

The story has some small jumping in between past and present but it was easy to follow. The main character Kat was wild but interesting.

This thriller balances in between Sheriff Bucky Ballard, his deputy cousin Busby, Forensic Investigator Fiona Peach hunting down the kiIIer, and travelling nurse Kat with an extreme hobby.

Some parts of this story are dark and graphic but if you loved The Favorite Girl by Monica Arya you will love this one. Again, the stories are nothing alike but the vibe is there!

I would advise you to read this book instead of listening to an audiobook. Characters are so unique that you will enjoy creating them to your liking in your mind. I wasn't a fan of delivered voices in the audiobook and wish I would read this myself.

The gripping parts are very gripping and it's not for a weak stomach! There is one very sexually explicit scene as well.

There were a lot of errors though which sometimes took me out; wrong use of It's/Its for example, missing words, inconsistencies here and there. Sometimes the word processor goblins strike too hard and they are *rude* lol

I really liked that one of the characters has Downs; it was nice to see that representation.

One overall gripe I have is that the villain is mostly very villain but the end part makes you think more sympathetically and the flip was a bit hard to take. I get it but we go from some pretty horrendous murders to a gentle mercy killing and it's that which gets her caught (nearly anyway) so I dunno. Either be a Villain or be a very morally gray character, but doing both was a bit messy feeling.

But your mileage will vary of course.

I also really liked Fiona! And stories mountains are always great.

This book? It didn’t ask me to be ready.

It grabbed me by the throat and dragged me through every ugly, brutal, oddly hilarious corner of the human mind — and somehow, I didn't want to look away.

It’s dark.
It’s loud in all the ways most people are too polite to talk about.
It’s messy, and a little bit unhinged, and weirdly honest about the parts of ourselves we usually hide.

There were moments I laughed when I shouldn’t have, moments that made my skin crawl, and moments that made me sit back and think:
"Yeah... I get it."

If you're looking for polished heroes and neat, pretty answers, don’t bother.
This story is for the ones who know the world isn’t black and white — it's bloodstained gray.
It’s for the ones who've fantasized about justice in a way they’ll never say out loud.

No handholding. No sugarcoating.
Just a raw, relentless dive into the parts of human nature most people pretend don’t exist.

And honestly? I loved every broken, brutal second of it.

Yes its my preferred genre but the cover got me intrigued. I have to say I read a hell of a lot and am always surprised how lame and samey a lot of covers are. So this already gets my interest before I start reading.
Now i've reviewed the cover I better start on the story before I run out of words.
Well i'm glad after that build up I can provide a positive spin on this well constructed, murder mystery come psychological thriller. The pace was consistant, characters likably (yes Kat was appealing to me but I am normally drawn to the psycho's) and well developed. Plenty of graphic violence and torture to keep me amused and I here there is more to come sequel wise so that's nice. More of the same please author.

I loved the original take on the cover to start with, I wouldn't have guessing the graphic nature of the book from that! The story is well plotted, moves at a decent speed and puts you right in the middle of each scene. I couldn't wait to see how it all unfolded and it didn't disappoint, right to the last page I was engulfed in the story and it had me holding my breath!

I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a murder/mystery thriller book - now I shall patiently wait the next release by this author!

Really enjoyable quick read. Lots of likeable characters with potential for more books about them all?! (no pressure 😂) I read this as a "break" from the dark romance I have been reading, so wasn't phased by either the one spicy scene or the details of Kats plans but I know it's not for everyone. As with all stories I enjoy I wish it was longer, I wanted to know more about all of them. Fingers crossed for a second book. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 x

Caller No. 5 - Wow!!! What an incredible book! Written in the third person, it’s one of the few books in that perspective that I’ve genuinely enjoyed. This is a dark, spicy, horror thriller and is outstanding! The character development is impressive, and the transitions between past and present are seamless and truly engaging. If you're looking for an excellent read from an indie author that spicy and dark this is for you. I too dislike Brads!

What a fantastically fun book!

Kat Walker is such a great character, which makes this book so enjoyable to read! This is more than your average "I've been done wrong and I'll get my revenge" story. For anyone out there who has known a Brad, or two this book is a must read. I'll definitely be downloading the next book in the series, Sugar, so I can find out what else Kat has in store for us. 😁

Abuse leads to murder

What does child abuse, teen rape, alcohol, love, sex, torture, and murder have in common? This book! So well written. The development of this troubled woman throughout the story and the details of the victims keep the reader engaged for more! Then you also have the sheriff with his own details makes the story even better!
