This would be a great read if you’re into Malaysia’s political scene or love satirical fiction. Fun and witty with dark humour that absolutely enjoyable yet can also be seen as quite provoking and cynical or overly exaggerated. I personally love how the author so inventively crafted his dystopian idea by combining a totalitarian theme to an epidemic backdrop with a plotline that mirroring so close to our society; of racism, prejudice, corruption, gender-based violence, ‘penunggang agama’ and even black magic.
Set in a land of Hujung Manani, a country that was ruled by a dictator named Priapus, I followed an intricate perspective through few of its characters following the outbreak of Koro—a mental disease that affected men in believing that their genitals would shink into their bodies and disappeared—that has affected the republic. Concerned and protesting against the dictatorial regime, Pertiwi—a feminist in her nineties—decided to overthrow the dictator by holding a democracy movement. This is where all the conflicts and fun begins when the dictator’s wife, Datin Lotis who was also known to be using a black magic, trying to take in charge as Priapus was in hiding due to his Koro illness.
I was starstruck with the author’s way of writing that hooked me with his engaging phrasing and immersive worldbuilding that also highlighted on the state’s political landscape. From Little Rose’s story to a crime scene of the ghostly mistress and the mysterious death of an Executive Chief as well the fate to Ustaz Wahidi— these incidents grasped an absorbing backstories that later strike the risen of followers and protestors to fight for revolution. Love the ref on its cultural/religious issues, historical events as well the characterization that might allegedly adapted from real people.
The revelation on Koro was finely plotted (love how psychological it goes) and I like the perspective of Faisal Tehrani at the end. A dense, provocative and thought-provoking adventure for this one but I enjoyed it nevertheless.
