With dragon eggs stolen and a murderer on the loose only days before the Broom Racing Festival, Elsie has once again found herself in the hot seat. She’s vowed to get the eggs back–even if she has to team up with her biggest (and most baldheaded) enemy to do it. It should be a straightforward case… until a journalist is found dead at the local inn. He left behind a scathing quill and no shortage of enemies. It seems like he badmouthed everyone in town, and with the Broom Racing Festival fast approaching, Elsie needs to find the culprit. Fast. But time isn’t on her side, especially not when a cursed capricorn (that’s a goat-unicorn, of course ) arrives at the animal shelter. He’s in bad shape and only Elsie can get the potion to save him. It takes her on a mad chase across town, from begging the old hag under the willows to bartering with an unhinged wind dragon. With dragon eggs to find, a curse to undo, and a murderer to catch, Elsie needs to solve it all before the big broom race… or find her newfound happiness in town burned to a crisp.
This was a pretty good followup to the debut in the series. Elise is still trying to keep the secret about her magic while seeking some way to learn more to manage it. In the midst of that there is a broom riding competition and the dragon eggs she was responsible for are stolen, the culprit being, allegedly her best friends dad who is fresh out of prison. The events pick up where book 1 left off. Elise is a great character coming to terms with learning about her magic later in life .Once the eggs are stolen, she is determined to once again go into sleuthing mode whether the constables want her or not. More secrets come out, more magic is discovered, and a really engaging plot that moves along at a steady pace. Overall, pretty great followup.
Picking up where book one left off, we find Elsie dealing with the Egg heist, and her best friend’s father being accused of the theft. There’s a broom race being held in town, and a reporter covering the events is murdered. And to top it all off, Elsie’s farm is dealing with a sick Capricorn (goat unicorn). Then there is school, work, and her malfunctioning magic to worry about too…
So much is happening in this story, that I’m frankly astonished Elsie managed to get as much sleep as she did! Not to worry, she’s the resourceful sort, and we see her cleverly work her way through each of the issues facing her. Amusingly enough, her toughest issue wasn’t the murder, or the missing eggs, but rather the sick Capricorn.
It all makes for an engrossing story, sure to entertain the reader. Definitely a good choice for paranormal cosy mystery fans, as well as for dragon lovers.
This is an interesting series with a different world built by the author. The characters are interesting and the plot held my interest. I enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to reading the next one.

This was a fun, well written and loving story. The characters are lovable, interesting, and makes the reader want to know more.. The plot is straight forward and the premise was finding the stolen dragon eggs, finding a truly lousy person's murderer, and saving a Capricorn. What fun! I most definitely recommend this book.
A lot of mysteries to solve in this fun reading paranormal cozy mystery series. You encounter many different kinds of magical animals at the rescue farm. Elsie dragon magic continues to unfold in this second book of the series. More to come in the next book.
This is a book you don’t want to miss! It is set in a unique paranormal world, with delightful characters (Zippy is a hoot), a captivating story, and lots of humour. I was blown away by all the twists, especially the one at the end. Jessica Schly’s narration is absolutely brilliant.
