If most pastors and leaders of Christian ministries are honest, raising money to fund their ministry work is seen as a necessary evil. But what if the issue of raising money to fund God's Kingdom work is in fact something that is dear to the heart of God? Even biblical?
In this powerful and insightful book, Rick Dunham takes his readers to Scripture to show them what God has to say on this sensitive yet crucial issue.
Rick Dunham is a 35-year veteran in direct response marketing, fundraising, and communications for nonprofit organizations. He is the founder and CEO of Dunham+Company, an international consulting firm that assists more than 50 ministries worldwide in their communications and fundraising needs. Rick is the author of If God Will Provide, Why Do We Have to Ask for Money? and Secure: Discovering True Financial Freedom and has also been published and quoted in The Washington Post, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, USA Today, Townhall.com, and Church Executive, and has served as a commentator on Fox Business News as well as radio stations and networks across the U.S. Rick also serves on the board of the Giving Institute, the publisher of Giving USA, the annual report on philanthropy in America.
For a free book given to me in a fundraising setting, this was a nice surprise. Not profound or nuanced, but a biblical and practical encouragement to understand fund-raising as a positive part of the Christian life. I appreciated the focus on the heart -- the area of giving & fundraising for ministry is first & foremost a matter of helping people's hearts be captured by Christ as their greatest treasure. Also appreciated the chapter on the responsibility of Christian leaders to be direct and specific in asking people to give.
I enjoyed the this quick read and had two main takeaways on how to view giving:
1. Giving as spiritual warfare. Giving moves forward God’s mission in the face of Satan’s desire for people to be controlled by money (materialism, always wanting more, being stingy, etc.)
2. Giving as aligning the hearts of God’s people with His kingdom’s mission. They way we spend our time, money, and energy reflects what our hearts prioritize.
A simple overview with good insights to many of the foundations of biblical fundraising. While I feel like Nouwen's Spirituality of Fundraising is still the gold standard, this is an excellent complement to any fundraiser in a Christian setting, especially those starting out or believing the "fundraising is a necessary evil" lie.
