Figuring It Out Together: An M/M Slow Burn Gay Romance

Rate this book
First introduced in Christmas Together ( Book 2), Reese Danby and Jordan Rothchild now take center stage in their own story!

One man vows to never love again. The other pledges to win his heart.

British Intelligence agent Reese Danby is a man adrift. After losing his longtime partner, Reese finds himself missing that deep connection, that unwavering bond, of someone always by his side.

Enter his newly assigned partner, rookie agent Jordan Rothchild. Jordan is everything Reese could want in a partner…and so much more.

There’s no denying the spark Reese feels the moment he lays eyes on Jordan. A spark which Reese ruthlessly quashes. For not only is Reese's true sexuality a closely guarded secret, but a devastating personal loss has left him emotionally wounded, unable to surrender his heart to another man. But then an unexpected encounter reveals he and Jordan share the same hidden truth…and mutual attraction.

Under Jordan’s gentle, encouraging affection, Reese’s walls slowly crumble, and he dares risk falling in love again. One beautiful night spent together changes everything between them, but in the next breath will also break both their hearts.

As past pain collides with present danger, Reese navigates treacherous terrain, both professionally and emotionally, finally realizing his terrible mistake of pushing Jordan away.

But is it too late for a second chance? Or has Reese’s fear cost him love and happiness?

Figuring It Out Together is a slow burn, second chance gay romance with a HEA, featuring special appearances by Liam Bancroft and Colin Mason from Books 1 and 2.

Very Early James Bond Vibe.

This is Book 3 in the Partners Series by Jaime Lynn Miller, all are set in the mid 70’s and feature characters involved in the British Secret Services. It takes a bit of getting used to reading in this era of no Internet or Cell Phones and homosexuality could get you fired from your job in many cases.

Reece Danby surfaced in Book 2 where he worked with Colin and Liam who were the MC’s in Book 1 and 2. Here they are all back together in SecTen under Lockwood, their Boss. Reece is ex Military, which he left following the death of his best friend (and secret lover) William, who died in Reeces’s arms after saving his life.

Recently his work partner in SecTen, Emma, was involved in a car crash in front of Reece and she is now confined in a wheelchair following a stoke. He also blames himself for this accident. He carries guilt feelings for both these losses. Now, to protect himself from any further heartbreak or pain, he refuses to have any close relationships. Five years later, none of his colleagues even know he is gay.

Following a recent successful mission with a temporary partner, Jordan Rothchild, a 24 year old who speaks several languages, The Boss informs them they are now permanent work partners. Reece isn’t happy about this because on their prior mission he could feel the attraction building between himself and Jordan. Jordan was full into him but Reece refuses him, saying, ‘there is no way it can ever be’.

Despite requesting a change, The Boss sends them both to Pinewood Training Centre for a week. They need to learn how to work together in a close work partnership as their lives will depend on knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses. During this time Reece and Jordan become more aware of their growing feelings, Reece especially, and again he’s giving out the same spiel, ‘this can never be’. He does this frequently and I felt like throwing my iPad at a wall. He is really annoying me now. It was infuriating just how negative he was about his feelings and the possibilities for the future with Jordan, if he’d only let his walls down.

When they become involved in an International Incident in London during an important Medical Conference, it highlights the era in which these books are set.
Their 4 man Team, Colin, Liam, Reece and Jordan are a involved in several incidents, an arson attack on the hotel, car chases between safe houses with possible defectors and finally a shoot out where a member of the team is shot. Has Reece lost his opportunity for a second chance at love?

These covers! This one looks like college age boys instead of almost 30 year olds who are British Intelligence agents after serving in the military and other careers. The covers are off putting, that’s for sure.
About the book, this number 3 in the series confirms that Liam and Colin are an exceptional MM romance couple. They can be compared with other noteworthy and memorable MM pairings. The author hit a home run with the writing of them. In this book they lit up every scene they were in, which was a great many. They are definitely the costars of the story.
Too bad their chemistry and charisma outshone the story’s MCs, fellow agent Reese and newcomer Jordan. Their chemistry was nonexistent and their scenes were lackluster. I started noticing that the predominant descriptive word in their bland sex scenes was ‘gentle.’
Gentle this and gentle that, blah. Way too much pushing away by Reese and anguish about a tragic past relationship. His heartache wasn’t written as well as the emotional scenes between Colin and Liam in the previous books.
I was very open to getting blown away by the new relationship in this book, as lovely as my favorite couple is, but this one was ‘meh’.

4.5 Stars - Rounded up

As others have noted, don't be put off by Figuring It Out Together's cover art. This is a wonderful romance-suspense novel with two very grown British intelligence officers as protagonists. Miller has created an impressive list of equally well developed secondary characters.

A great read, but one that ends just a little too abruptly.

Meeting Jamie Lynn Miller at a Tampa Bay Book con in this fledgling author had a booth next to mine. Having almost been neighbors in the northwest side of Chicago, when I lived there for 6 years, we had much in common. I now purchase everyone of her books and have watched her grow in to her best: MM Military Romance stories.

This third book Figuring it Out Together hosts two new members, who are also in London’s British Intelligence agency, Reese Danby and Jordan Rothchild. Jordan has just been transferred into the team. Reese has been there for a while having lost his partner to an almost fatal injury that he blames himself for. To add insult to injury he has lost a lover in death while passing in Reese’s arms five yeas ago. For five years he has had no real deep contact with another lover, sealing his heart to work. Enter green eyed devilish Jordan.

As the blurb says….this is a slow burn, partners to lovers story and so worth the read. How working together and respecting each other and trust builds so walls can come down…..Ad it doesn’t hurt that lovers Liam Bancroft and Colin Mason from Books 1 and 2 help a bit too, showing Reece what he is missing!!!!.

Jamie Lynn may be seen riding with local Chicago police as her ever love of Men in Uniform keeps her on her toes….. as she continues to write her 5 stars stories.

Hi Y’all! Come in sit for a full English and a Cuppa while I tell you about this book I just read.

The title is Figuring it out by Jamie Lynn Miller. it is book 3 in Partners series. You probably can read as a stand a lone but would enjoy it more read in order.

The cover is very sweet. Then I read the blurb and it really got my interest because
Emotional pain, loss of a partner, secrets... Plus I read the other two and loved Colin and Liam.
Who’s my favorite main character ? This is a hard choice. I'm going with Reece. I just really felt his pain. ( Was there another character I loved and why) I was so thrilled to see more Colin and Liam.

The story has so many settings. There is work. Reece's flat, Jordans moms hotel. Lots of things they do there, places they go on jobs, some safe houses. Just lots of great settings.

The story is a slow burn romantic suspense.

Were there significant plot twists and turns? Oh yes. All I will say is what can you expect from a book about spies? Lots of action!

I loved the ending. It was HEA but I bet there is more. Bring it on!

If you like slow burn, second chance, and wanted more Liam and Colin, oh and spies You will love this.

This is the third book in the Partners series and it can be enjoyed as a standalone. This is the story of Reese Danby and Jordan Rothchild. Both men are members of the British Intelligence Agency and Jordan has just joined the established team. Reese becomes his new partner. But Reese is not prepared to open up to anyone. He lost his last partner and still blames himself for his death. Of course, no one knows that he was also his romantic partner at the time as well. So Reese is all about focusing strictly on the job at hand. Jordan is prepared to work hard to bring down the walls that Reese has around his heart and emotions. He sees the pain behind Reese's behavior. This is their story. It is nice that Liam and Colin from the two earlier books are back to help them figure things out. The book has lots of intrigue to keep the challenges always changing. It is a slow burn story that you will enjoy. The book is well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed it.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Reese is a very closed off agent.
He's carrying a world of hurt and guilt upon his shoulders.
His grief had a grip on him for years and he blames himself for things over which he had no control.
When he's partnered with young Jordan he's instantly fearful.
The young man brings forth feelings and issues he's long suppressed so he desperately tries to ignore the building connection between them.
Jordan however is not put off easily, he knows what he wants and it's Reese.
Of course there's fast paced action, danger and drama as they go about their jobs keeping the country safe.
Thankfully their friends Liam and Collin are also there to help Resse see what he could have if he's just brave enough to reach for it.

HARD WON!!

This is an INCREDIBLE Book!! Reese is a solid dedicated Agent. Jordan is a rookie to this successful, established team. These two hit it off right away. JAMIE LYNN MILLER takes them on a hard road to discovery. Reese has a lot of history behind him. Jordan needs to find the man deep inside to show him what he's missing. I Loved This Book. It's a hard won match that's beautifully written. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!

We met Reese and Jordon in the book Christmas Together, you don't have to read that before this though Liam and Colin from the other books do make an appearance. This is a great slow burn, co-workers book.

Third in series and best yet!
Can be read as a standalone too but it’s nice to have background on the other characters.
There are exciting action pieces included but the focus is on the slow burn, second chance love story.
This HEA is hard won!
