Jinx #3

Wild Jinx

Rate this book
In the third book of her hot and hilarious series, New York Times bestselling author Sandra Hill takes readers along on another wild ride with Jinx, Inc., where trouble is no match for a cagey Cajun matchmaker--and passion conquers all. When reporter Celine Arseneaux entered The Playpen, a Baton Rouge club for men AND women, she never expected John LeDeux to swagger up to her.

Sure, the bayou's notorious bad boy was pure sex on the hoof. But even with her expose on the line, Celine will refuse to be his conquest left cryin' in her crayfish -- at least not again. Not for this man who doesn't even remember her! Detective LeDeux had always been too hot to handle, but now he was on fire as the cop posing as a gigolo to bust the Dixie Mafia. Joining Tante Lulu's treasure hunt seems a fine way to avoid the media ruckus--until Celine pursues her story deep into the bayou, stoking John's hazy memories of a sizzling night five years ago....

Tee-John LeDeux is not so "tee" anymore. He is all grown up, a Fontaine police detective, and Tante Lulu thinks it's time he got his Hope Chest and a good strike of the Thunderbolt of Love. I have been waiting for this book since I read the very first book in this series and it was just as good as I wanted it to be, with some surprises along the way!

I always thought our wild Hero, Tee-John, would end up with a equally wild Heroine. It just seemed likely that his true love would be his match in every way and considering everything John has gotten into as we have watched him grow up, she would have to be something special to corral this bad boy of the bayou. Celine Arseneaux is John's match, but she is far from a wild woman, except in the sack. She has had a crush on John since she was 15. As a geek, she felt beneath his notice until a party in college where they were both a little impaired.

Five years later John is working undercover trying to bust the Dixie Mafia in a high end sex club called the Playpen. Celine is also undercover. She is a reporter out for an exposé. She never expected to encounter John and reignite their old flame. When the bust comes down, John and Celine are both swept up in it and John is ordered to keep Celine under wraps until after the trial. John has the perfect place.

Jinx, Inc. is planning a pirate treasure hunt based on an old map that has been in Tante Lulu's family for generations. An out of the way location deep in the bayou is the perfect place to disappear. Celine is more than a little cautious, after all once burned . . . But John is not going to let her go, but Celine has more than her heart at stake this time around and John's reputation as a love em and leave em bayou bad boy is going to be difficult for him to overcome. But, Tante Lulu and St. Jude have overcome some good sized challenges before.

Wild Jinx was recommended to me and I have to say it was a fun read. It had me laughing. Tante Lulu is a 92 year old woman, who is truly something else. The things that she says and does can have you laughing. She reminds me of Daisy Moses from The Beverly Hillbillies.

John LeDeux is Tante's nephew and they both love each other so much. Tante is trying to find John a wife. She is known for trying to find the LeDeux men wives. The funny thing about it, she arranges these surprise weddings. The hero and heroine can think they are going to a party, when actually they are going to their own wedding. Now that's messed up!

Celine Arseneux is a reporter, who is two years younger than John. They have gone to the same high school and college. She had a crush on John for years. He's the hottie and she's the geek. She probably have dressed like a geek in school, but she's not a geek now.

When John and Celine meet again after not seeing each other for years, the tension starts. They meet up at a sex club. They both were undercover. They get arrested with other people in the club. Celine basically blows her cover, but John doesn't. But, eventually, Celine blows his cover for him. That leads him to go into hiding with his family. They are participating in hunting for treasures. Celine has to do a story on them and doesn't realize that John is one of the hunters. When she finds out, she is asked not to do a story just yet and that she had to stay with everyone, so that no one (The mob) can follow her back and harm John.

John and Celine's tension take steps up the ladder. Tante Lulu is trying to hook them up, not knowing that they had a hooked up back in college.

I will end this review right now. If you have this book in your TBR pile, give it a try. You might just find yourself liking the book.

WILD JINX is the story of Tee-John, the youngest of the LeDeaux brothers from the Cajun Cowboy series.

This book received low ratings on the All About Romance and Amazon websites, mostly in part because it contained the worn-out secret baby theme, pirates and more cowboys. (There should be a requirement that all book jackets contain warnings about the secret baby theme - I am sick to death of reading it already!) There were too many underlying characters to keep track of, especially if you have not read PINK JINX and PEARL JINX or the Cajun Cowboy series in order. The chemistry between Tee-John and Celine sparked, sizzled and then died out. It was just an okay book for me. I had hoped Tee-John would get a better story because he is my favorite of the LeDeaux brothers.

I personally get a kick out of the funny dialogue and weird scenarios that Sandra Hill writes (ie. Tee-John and Celine running into each other while they are both undercover at a sex club!), but I am giving the book four stars for one reason only - Tante Lulu.

Tante Lulu is, hands down, my favorite character of all time. Even though she is ninety-one-years-old by the time Tee-John gets his own story, she still has a thing for Richard Simmons and she still dresses outrageously. Her biggest fear is that she will die before she finds her G-Spot. Why doesn't the author give this poor woman her own book?!

I was really surprised that I like this book that was based in Loo-see-ana!! I loved the cajun verbage.

John and Celine are brought together once again under interesting circumstances and influenced by their passion for each other. Little does John know that there is a secret that Celine has been keeping from him since their meeting again after a long ago one night stand.....HMMMM!!!!

If you are a Sandra Hill fan, you will like this book. It was a funny, Cajun romp, much like her other books featuring the LeDeux family.

This time, the hero is John LeDeux, known as Tee-John in earlier books. John is now a cop, and while working undercover in a club, he enounters Celine Arseneaux, a woman with whom he had a one-night stand while they were in college. Celine is not at all happy to see John again - unbeknownst to him, he is the father of her five year old son. Celine's grandfather agreed to take her in and help her when she was pregnant only if she promised to never tell John about the baby. Due to fallout from an article that reporter Celine submits to her newspaper, John's cover is blown, and he is suspended from the police department and send to lay low until the trial. He goes home to the bayou, where his family is planning a hunt for underwater pirate treasure with a company called Jinx. The newspaper Celine works for hears rumor of the treasure hunt and sends her to cover the excursion. As John and Celine are thrown together, they experience overwhelming attraction for one another that leads to several steamy intimate encounters. When the LeDeux family inadvertently finds out about John's son, they force Celine to finally tell him that he is a father. John feels completely betrayed by Celine, and he is enraged. Will he be able to forgive Celine and realize that he loves her? The entire LeDeux family intervenes in order to make certain that John and Celine confront their feelings for one another.

All of the LeDeux family members appear in this story. Tante Lulu is front and center again in this book, and she is as outrageous and enjoyable as ever while she makes certain that her favorite nephew gets his happy ending. This book also includes characters from the previous two novels in the Jinx series. I believe that this novel can be enjoyed without reading the other Jinx books, but some knowledge of the LeDeux family would enhance reading pleasure. John is a hot, sensual hero, although still a bit immature through most of the novel. I found this to be a very typical, entertaining Sandra Hill story.

I loved this series. This book was considered to be a part of the "jinx" series, but it featured characters from the Cajun series. At the end of the book there were more characters introduced, and the author wrote a note to the reader that was in the back of the book. It basically said that she left it sort of open ended in case she decided to write more books. I hope so. I love this series, and I'm kind of sad that I finished it!

OHH How I love the LeDeux brothers. This is the story of Tee-John and Celine, and Etienne too. I love the way the author writes "Cajun". With having lived in Louisiana and East Texas this is the way it goes. Every day is a day for a Fais-do-do. Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!!!!!!

I loved this book. Fun to read and emotionally satisfying. The humor and the family relationships were delightful. She took a basic romance plot and made it fresh and new. The presence of Tante Lulu and the rest of the Jinx crew makes it feel like a visit with old friends.

This was a great book by Sondra Hill. Getting to see more of the family that started in the first of this series. Alot of mystery going on, but it all comes together in the end.

Wild Jinx

This book was very funny in parts but I found the treasure hunting descriptions quite boring. Also, if you hadn't read the previous books (and I hadn't) there were so many characters that it took away from the main couple. It probably would be more enjoyable to read the books in sequence. The elderly aunt was very rich which seemed at odds with her description IMO and the book doesn't state how she aquired her wealth.

This book has been on my TBR since 2012 and I just got 10% in and realized this was a secrets baby romance. This is not a deal breaker for me but I flipped through and realized she didn’t tell him until page 222. What??? After they’ve been seeing each other?? I cannot. I would never trust this woman. Ever.

It was a crazy read, but I enjoyed it. Not knowing where each person would end up was an adventure, and I loved Etienne, that mini version of Tee-John, who sometimes didn't seem to have matured and in the end surprised us with his decision not to go along with Tante Lulu and her family.

The third in the Jinx series, this cajun story is blazing hot with humor and talent !

Celine Arseneaux is a reporter looking for a hot story. Given the chance for a great scoop, she puts on some next-to-nothing attire, and
enters the Playpen. The Playpen is a Baton Rouge club for men and women. There, she is quite surprised when John LeDeux approaches her. She hasn't seen him in five years, and is shocked he even remembers her! John is afraid she is going to screw up his under-cover operation, and steals her camera.

To get even, she writes up a story for her newspaper about the police bust that shortly followed their meeting. Without naming names, she was able to express about a police officer posing as a gigolo just to bust the Dixie Mafia. Her story puts John in danger, and he quickly needs to hide from the public eye.

Tante Lulu , John's 92 year old aunt, has decided to call in Jinx, Inc., the treasure company to come to the bayou. She believes there is pirate treasure hidden in the swaps. A perfect opportunity for John to hide. But Celine pursues her story, and quickly the sparks heat up between her and John. Tante Lulu decides John needs a wife, and puts her plans in motion with the help of St. Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes . Soon, the thunderbolts strike and Celine and John are both a bit confused and a little in love.

But Celine is wary around John and he can't figure out why. With a little investigative work by Tante Lulu, it is soon revealed. Before long, Celine and John are fighting and things don't look so good. Will they work it out? With some help from family and the various statues of St. Jude, anything is possible.

Tante Lulu is a wonderful character. Full of vitality and humor, she really brings this story to life. Firmly believing in family first, she tries to do what is best for everyone. The characters were believable, and the storyline fresh and energetic. The historical facts about the Bayou was detailed but didn't overwhelm the story. I quite enjoyed it!

Plot was lacking. Heroine was unlikeable.

To show why I did not like the plot and heroine, I will be giving away much of the story below. So, don't read anymore if that bothers you.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
Celine had a crush on John since high school. They had a one-night stand during college. They were both drunk. They did not get together again. She was pregnant and did not tell him. The reason was because he went out with many different women and she thought he wouldn't want to be a father. Six years later they are together due to work but she continues to not tell him. She also prints a newspaper article that blows his cover - he was working undercover as a cop. He could have gotten killed because of that. Then she was rude, mean and acted like she hated him for most of the rest of the book. He learned about his son, was mad at her for awhile, but then tried to get together with her for a relationship. She continued to avoid him even though she "missed him so much it hurt." In my opinion, he hadn't done anything wrong, other than one thing described below. Her actions and treatment of him disgusted me.
John's one mistake was later in the story when he and Celine started to get along. Immediately after having sex, Eve, his former girlfriend showed up unexpectedly at his door. Celine walked out mad. John let her go so he could talk to Eve. He should have told Eve to come back later, but he didn't which was stupid.

To summarize the plot, he sees her, tries to have a relationship with her, falls in love with her. She treats him bad and pretends to hate him. When he later asks her to marry him, she says yes.

DATA:
Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: four. Setting: present day New Orleans, Baton Rouge and bayou area. Copyright: 2008. Genre: contemporary romance.

Oh Sandra Hill, why do you write these kind of things? So much of this book was spent being embarrassed because of Tante Lulu (who will never be killed off, sadly enough), and the rest was so wtf. The other Jinx books were actually pretty okay. Or rather - good in a Sandra Hill type of way. This one was all over the place. If you didn't read the Cajun books (which I didn't) this book makes no sense in some parts. There are so many people in it that they kept getting mixed up in my mind and so many inside jokes that just seemed awkward and forced. And wtf is up with the voice inside his head? Ugh. Also, one major thing that I think is a big 'no no' in books is saying how your characters love your previous books. Ummm...what?! NO.

While I thought this book was okay, I really only gave it three stars because it takes place in a town I used to live in, and it was great to read about old, familiar places.

But can I just say, Hill's heros are awfully randy. Those boys have got some stamina, dirty minds and way too much free time for how often they are having sex. Don't get me wrong--I understand romance novels are all about kinky escapism, but this is kind of over the top.

How's that for a totally unromantic perception of romance novels?

Probably more of a 3.5 but I did enjoy it. We have seen several stories about the Cajun side of this family and this story is about Tee John LeDeux who is the wildest of all the family and not ready to settle down until he sees Celine Arseneux who is a reporter. Both of them are caught in a sting and when the Dixie Mafia comes after Detective LeDeux he figures it is time to hide out for a while. The Jinx company is doing a treasure hunt in his own back yard and he knows he can help.

Interesting story line

Reportern Celine Arseneux and cop John LeDeux have a history long before they re-meet during a prostitiution bust of the Cajun Mafia. Then they are thrown together on a Jinx project searching for pirate treasure. It is a fun read, but considering how hot Cajun John was in prior books, I was a little disappointed. His book didn't live up to the hype in my mind. But Tante Lulu was back and as crazy as ever.
