Lize Meddings is the creator of the Sad Ghost Club, a club for anyone who’s ever felt sad or lost. The Sad Ghost Club community has over half a million followers on instragram. i added this book to my tbr because it's ghosts and it's graphic novel and it's sad girls and any of these things alone can get me to add a book.
and then years passed.
i really enjoyed the start of it — the art was so cute and the concept was nice — but ultimately i did experience the issue i have with many graphic novels which is that trying to cover a serious topic results in a kind of shallow and/or corny vibe.
Can I join this club? Please? Sometimes you really need someone to share your thoughts with, or simply keep you company. The Sad Ghost Club from Lize Meddings is an adorable little graphic novel about just that: finding someone to connect and share with, even if it is just admitting you are struggling. This is a short and sweet story—easily read in under a half hour—with a lovely message about finding your people, sharing each others struggles to help hold one another up, and making space to grow a community of people who need support like you. Medding’s artwork is simple but cute and charming and I love the whole motif of having people looking like an old timey halloween ghost costume, a pretty good metaphor for someone who feels invisible and like they are drifting through the world with no center, but also to represent that they are looking for their kindred spirits.
Meddings does a wonderful job addressing mental health issues. The two “ghosts” in the story, SG and Socks, both struggle to get out of bed, to motivate themselves and even simple tasks feel overwhelming. They meet when they both push themselves to attend a party, but end up too overwhelmed to really insert themselves into the scene. Meddings examines how intrusive thoughts can derail your progress or sour your confidence, but also encourages the reader to talk about these feelings. It is a good reminder we aren’t alone and can be the support for one another we all need and deserve.
Something I really appreciate is the index of mental health services at the end of the book. There is a strong good-faith push here towards productive ways of examining and helping your own mental health. The Sad Ghost Club is like a warm hug and open ear on a sad day and is a delight I hope others will enjoy as well.
I won’t give much away as this is a quick story that you’ll whizz through. The focus is on two people who feel alone, left out and apart from everyone else. They are Sad Ghosts. A strong emphasis on mental health in teenagers and how stress can effect them. But ultimately a heart warming tale, with beautiful illustrations and dashes of humour.
Also the author is from my home town so yes to that!
I will be looking out for more from The Sad Ghost Club. 💖
I totally adored this graphic novel!! I could really relate to this and I just loved the mental health rep in this book. I also really enjoyed the ghosts metaphors and the illustrations. Can’t recommend this enough so cute!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an eARC of this graphic novel.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought the illustrations were beautifully done and the story overall sends a really good message. Especially to those who feel like they're completely alone with their depression and/or anxiety. It sends the message that there are other people out there feeling the way you do and albeit in different boats with different baggage, you're all battling the same sea. And sometimes its better to speak out and seek some help than suffer in silence. But also, that it's okay not to be okay.
Niezwykle fajna książka opowiadająca o samotności i zdrowiu psychicznym. Pomimo, że przeczytanie jej zajęło mi zaledwie godzinę to niezwykle przyjemnie spędziłam przy niej czas i już zdążyłam podrzucić ją mojemu bratu do przeczytania
I read to 3/4 of the way through and gave up. Maybe this picks up towards the end because all the other reviewers found it really enjoyable.
A graphic novel featuring someone wearing a ghost costume, nobody else registers this so I suspect it means this person feels invisible. This person doesn’t like parties and a good 1/4 of the book seemed to be taken up with deliberations whether or not to go. They end up going, not enjoying it but meeting another ‘ghost’ that feels the same way and they become friends.
Left alone for the weekend with just his cat, Pocket, to keep him company, he struggled to do his assignment which had to be in by Monday. When he was invited to a party that night, he told himself all the reasons he shouldn’t go. But eventually he did. And no one would talk to him. Everyone had their own friends – until he spied another person across the room, just like him.
The two ghosts left together, and it was as if they were invisible. No one noticed them leaving. They decided to go for a walk and gradually they cheered each other up – just a little. They talked and talked. And when they headed for home, they were friends. They would see each other the following day…
Sadness and depression; anxiety and loneliness – everyone has felt it now and again, some much more than others. The Sad Ghost Club is a graphic novel which focusses on turning your thoughts around to put you in a better frame of mind. Of realizing others out there can and do feel the same and we can all help each other out. Written and illustrated by Lize Meddings, for children, she raises positive awareness of mental health and how it affects people differently. Recommended.
With thanks to Hachette AU/Hodder Children’s Books for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
