There's a serial killer on the loose in Castlemaine...

Well, to be honest, there's lots of killers in this town, including me. But when a handful of supernaturals in Castlemaine go missing, and start showing up dead with strange amputations and odd lacerations all over their bodies, the magical townsfolk start to get very nervous.

Whoever the killer is, he's after one of my new friends. I'm determined to stop him.

But first, I have to figure out a way of escaping the Ironclaw pack. Braxton Myles, the Alpha of Ironclaw, has taken me hostage as compensation for losing a few of his werewolves in a fight with my goose buddy Dwayne.

It wasn't Dwayne who killed his men, though. It was me. Braxton Myles has no idea what I'm capable of.

He's about to find out.

I just finished this latest, and I am left bereft and sad that it’s over. I love just how scarred but strong Chloe is, and how she’s trying to balance the scales to right her wrongs. Add in the very tough but soft-for-Chloe Malik, and this is a romance worth watching on the page. But that really isn’t all; this is a very well-written, action-filled adventure just filled with so many emotions, I felt that I didn’t know which way was up, and I enjoyed every last minute of it. I’m so glad I found this author, and I can’t wait to see what this talented author has in store for us readers next. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

It would've been 4 stars, but no, you don't get to skip two weeks for a book in a different series without warning. So, be aware, readers, you need to read the last book of the original series to get that piece of this book.
Maybe it wouldn't have annoyed me so much if it hadn't disrupted the flow of this book. It probably would have worked better as the beginning of the next book. The placement was awkward and left me feeling like I missed a huge chunk of story... because I did... and I'm not convinced that I wouldn't have felt that way had I read the other series first, given that this was two books after that series ended. It is also a big spoiler for that series, which I had intended to read, but now it's ruined. I know how it ended.

Aside from that mood killer, this book was really fun.
I love love love Dwayne. I want him!
I enjoyed the beginning, actually. I haven't felt anticipation like that from a read in a long while. I also like how Chloe thinks to get out of situations. I believe that she had these skills because she shows you that she does.
I like her character all around. She's very multidimensional while not whiny and overbearing.
Malik could use some work, though. He's a bit flat and clunky. He doesn't feel real like Chloe does.
The side mystery was good. There was some good use of misdirection, while breadcrumbs were expertly used to tie in the conclusion.
This is a really fun series. It's a shame that Hignett spoiled her other series herself! I won't read that one now, but I'll keep an eye out for others.

I couldn't wait to dive into this book! After THAT ending in the previous one, well, geesh, I had no choice! And I finally, FINALLY got to understand what the definition of a wife is.. and here I thought it was a position of love and respect, my bad... Oh, you want to KNOW what it is??? Well... you're going to have to read it to find out, but I promise, you'll say "oh... that makes sense" just as I did.

Oh gosh is Chloe..... Chloe! She thought she could escape the clutches of her previous "masters" in Castlemaine, hide under the radar, boy was she wrong! Talk about going from the frying pan into the fire...But she holds her own, fabulously I might add. She's so spunky, she's so sassy, she's soooo darn good! Well, ok, nevermind that she's an assassin, she's a good assassin, she's a caring assassin and she collects vicious creatures as if they were her commemorative spoon collection. First Dwayne, a killer goose (I kid you not!) then Sarah, who everyone shuns (for a good reason) then Zeb, who everyone is terrified of (again, excellent reason), then Daphne who's a sweet little shifter Chloe rescued and is really turning out....capable.... and somehow she has attracted the attention of Malik, who's, for want of an easy explanation, a god of sorts. AND there's the attention she DOESN'T want, namely from Braxton Myles who has her in his crosshairs. Now there's a really dangerous, vicious dude. And on top of it all, she's got a murder or two or three to try solve!

Oh lordie is Malik...hot! Ok, so he IS the aspect of, well, heated emotions 😜 he's not even human but still, ooo la la! It was actually quite comical the effect Chloe has on him, no, I didn't get that mixed up, it's the honest truth, she seems to have evoked a rather strong reaction in him, one that is really unexpected, for him, that is. And Chloe, well heck, she just drools when Malik is around her. I'm so loving this "is it, isn't it" scenario because you can bet all the tea in China I WANT this to be "it is!"

This book, as the previous one in this series, is exceptionally mezmerising, bewitching me from the very first word. This author has taken me to a diverse and distinctly beguiling world where the action is intense, the drama is hair-raising, the friendships are unusual yet strongly bound in fierce loyalty. My word, it's a tough ask to even capture the essence of this book (that might be a teensy pun there) let alone try to express my thoughts! This is a series that captivated me whole heartedly, a series that I've no idea what will transpire next and a series where I relish every word, every deed, every character, every event.

These books are so good! Both funny, interesting, and in places, deeply emotional.

Chloe, among all her other problems, begins this book by getting kidnapped by the werewolves. These aren't nice werewolves and they have very outdated ideas on well, everything. She finally gets a chance to talk to the sister and niece of her boss at the gym, and the sister is an evil disaster, and the little girl is well, the victim of severe abuse (bad werewolves, bad family, bad cults).

Being Chloe, she can't save the sister, but she can save the niece. Which is part of the rest of the story, including a major subplot about a bunch of dead supernaturals being found around town.

Chloe is awesome. For a trained assassin, she has a very strict moral code, or at least she is developing one. It keeps things interesting. Of course she helps some help from Dwayne "Just kill everything", and Malik (let's save the world),so that doesn't help her build her new morality much. However, her friends and her supernatural break when she was "sweet, dumb Chloe" made a huge difference.

What she does have going for her is a huge heart, which is how she gets into trouble. So far, I think I like her the most of all the characters in the related series. She struggles the most, has the least, but fights the hardest.

Can't wait for the next. She's got a lot more butt to kick out there to make the supernatural world safe.

Brilliant series!

Chloe is having a bad day.
First she has run out of milk for her coffee. She is then kidnapped by Braxton Myles, alpha of the Ironclaw pack, who wants not only her but her feathered friend Dwayne as compensation for killing four of his werewolves. Then to top it off, she discovers that a serial killer is targeting residents from Castlemaine. And let's not forget the sexy splinter god Malik, who still needs her help finding his lost siblings to prevent the apocalypse. Yes Chloe is definitely having a bad day, but it could be worse.

I absolutely LOVE Chloe, her dual mature of part assassin, part sweet dumb blonde makes her a compelling character to read. I was hooked in again from the first page and whatever side of her nature is out at the time I'm totally rooting for her all the way.

And then there's Malik, who at first I have to admit I wasn't sure of in the first book but the interaction (and growing attraction) between him and Chloe was fabulous. I absolutely want more of these two together and can't wait to see were this goes.

Lastly there's Dwayne the murder goose who is freaking awesome, even when he's making pretty pattens with the bones of his enemies before going to play poker. Yeah you heard me. I'm desperately wanting to be his friend 🤣

The cliffhanger at the end had my jaw hitting the floor so I'm off to read book 3 coz hell yeah i NEED to know what happens. Highly recommend this series if you haven't read it as I'm loving it 😁

OMG! From the get go, this book has you hooked! Chloe is abducted by Ironclaw and the first 25% of the book, I was glued to the pages wondering how she was going to survive. (Which is obvious she would since there was so much story left!) After reading the other series and Vicious Creatures, we know Braxton Miles is dangerous, but this book shows just how vicious, depraved and despicable he really is. (ALong with the rest of that horrible pack!) Chloe manages to save Daphne from the wolves, but finds out there is now a serial killer in Castlemaine. She agrees to find the killer while Malik looks for his lost sibling. And as if that wasn't enough, there are still wolves coming after her. This book is intense! Between Chloe and Dwayne, the fighting scenes get crazy! (Then add in the murderous inclinations of some of the other characters - WHEW!) I have to say, I LOVE DWAYNE!! (How can you not love the murder goose?!) Now I know why the pack thinks it was Dwayne who killed all the wolves in the previous town. And when Chloe finds out who is taking the townspeople, I can't believe I hadn't figured it out! You don't have to have read Bitter Bones (Prue's series), but it was nice to have the back story on the killer. This is (of course!) another must read by Lauretta Hignett!

I really liked the first book, so I was disappointed when I began to read this one and had to question if a ghost writer wrote this. I think the main issue is that the author wrote this in haste. The backstory in the first book was designed to show Chloe's history and her character. I can see the author's intentions when writing certain plots. In this book, all we get is a bunch of random adventures the heroine gets thrown into.

The starting story of the abduction by the wolf gang is abrupt and unsatisfactory. The romance between Chloe and Malik is nice. I can feel the chemistry between them, although it's a little unclear why they are attracted to each other. However, I cannot stand how Chloe's knees always get weak whenever Malik gets close. I know that part of that is caused by the nature of Malik, being the god of passionate love, but do we have to read the same description over and over again?

Also, WTF is the ending? It's okay that the part of the story happens in another series, but it's unforgivable to just skip two weeks and summarize what has taken place. It's so lazy and unreasonable that I can hardly believe. It's a good thing I don't want to read about how Chloe helps to save her friends in another part of the world anyway.

Completely fell in love with the whole "gang" that Chloe collects. Dwayne or Lord DeWayne the goose, seriously a battle goose, Jeb the misunderstood murdered boy who is a hell hound, but so darn adorable, Daphne, an abused little werewolf child who was rescued and has a very interesting set of skills, and little Sarah who is a very, very powerful poltergeist. Chloe's neighbor who collects unwanted children and protects them lethally all the while giving out hugs and sweetness. And that is just her household and neighbor. The townsfolk are another group you like, and now Malik, the fracture of love god, who is also a totally bad beeped dude. Drool worthy. Now our Chloe, she was trapped in an alter ego when an assassination went wrong (see the first book, equally as good) so she has to battle both sides of her nature, and she is amazing. The story is non stop and the characters make you want to keep reading. I am so happy I found this author, ending up getting her other books, involving Prue (the living skeleton). Worth the read all her books, can't wait for January 14 when the third book is released.

Good

Warning! This ends on a bit of a traumatic book-hook cliffhanger… it’s a little unusual for me to say a book-hook is traumatic, but this is one of those “what the…” moments . It rates a 4/5 on my trauma scale because of the drama, not because of the immediate nature of it!

When bodies start turning up in Castlemain, Chloe is a little surprised: but first she has a little werewolf problem to deal with, and there might be some things she needs to help Malik with too…

This is an action packed, fast paced story, with the best side characters ever (yes, Dwayne is still my favourite, though Daphne is fast becoming my second favourite!).
Part murder mystery, part fantasy, it also loosely ties into the Blood and Magic series by the author, and fans will spot a couple of references to that series.
An entertaining read, this is a slightly darker flavoured urban fantasy, with an intriguing plot, and some delightfully dark revenge moments.
Recommended for Hignett fans, and also those who love their UF on the darker side.

This is the second book in Chloe's story, and it doesn't disappoint. The book is fast, exciting, nail-biting, and exhilarating, while making you laugh out loud at unexpected times. There's a bit of lovely slow-burn romantic tension, but it's not a romance novel - it's definitely an urban fantasy action-adventure.

Dwayne the goose is fantastic (and hilarious). Even though we don't know his backstory yet, he's definitely an MVP in this town. I can't wait for more!

While you can read each series as a stand-alone, if you haven't read Lauretta Hignett's books yet, run over and find the Imogen Grey series to start. It's helpful to see Chloe in context before meeting her in-depth in this series. Once you're hooked, you'll be in for a lot of very satisfying reads as you explore this fantastic world. The books just keep getting better!

Another great addition to Chloe's story. However, having already finished reading Prue's story (Blood & Magic Series) a lot of the events in this book were already spoiled. The mystery isn't really a mystery. It's nice to get the references and events explained from tidbits dropped during Chloe's cameo in Prue's story. Readers who haven't read the Blood & Magic Series will still understand this book so don't worry. An enjoyable read and Chloe's addition to her found (monster) family is welcomed. Love love all the characters and their quirky yet murderous tendencies. The humor and banter is top notch. Could read about their interactions all day.

The next book can't come soon enough after the bomb that's dropped at the end. Now that events are all caught up cannot wait to see how this story will unfurl and what else will be revealed.

Chloe I still in Castlehaven the supernatural town hidden in the garlands of America. Malik one.of the fractured God's is eager for her to.work with him in his quest to locate his brothers and sisters so they can return to their own dimension.....preferably before the human world is destroyed. Chloe though is distrcted, there is a killer operating within Castlehaven and she keeps.finding.the.mutilated bodies. There's also the wolf pack run by alpha Braxton Haven located just outside of town, he is decided Chloe owes him a debt after he.killed his.brother (see previous book). He is decided Chloe now belongs to.him and he cu do.as.he pleases with her.........now Chloe is.deadly the best at what she does but even she cannot kill.multiple werewolves nd Braxton commands hundreds.....................Chloe I going.to.need a miracle..it's a good thing she knows a few God's................

Oh my goodness! If you have been reading this series from the beginning, get ready to read the most intense, riveting, and the best one yet!
Chloe is up for the biggest fight of her life! Not only is her life in danger, but most of her friends and neighbors who all live in Castlemaine.
Someone is killing supernatural creatures. She definitely has her work cut out for her to save the people she cares about.
Of course, we get to see Dwayne do his famous fighting, and Sarah, Norma, Daphne, and Jeb are all helping.
Malik and Chloe's budding relationship is growing into heavy and interesting ways.
Be ready to spend the day reading because once you start, Fractured God's, you won't want to stop and put it down.

Immediately hooked with the line “he would never guess that at the same time I was staring vacantly at him, I was also carefully assessing his weight, muscle mass and reach,” relatable AF and it made me giggle. At several points my heart was pounding and I started sweating from anxiety- everything was somehow both fantastical and terrifyingly real, like the reflection of new motherhood and society’s unfair expectations. Chloe is fast thinking and practical it makes her so relatable I couldn’t put the story down. The side characters were amazing- Debbie with her monologue and sweet Dwayne- he truly embodies killer goose energy lol!
This author has fast become a favorite and I will be waiting for the next book eagerly- highly recommend

It is so interesting to watch how LH subtly weaves Chloe's original personality with Sweet Chloe. It's quite a challenge to merge the perfect skills of a ruthless assassin with a simple-minded and gentle soul. It's so interesting to see how much of her is evolving to make her an assassin with a heart. The diverse characters are so well drawn -we get a bit of everything with a few unusual ones. (A goose?!?) Her love interest is delicious!

I love the way the author weaves characters and plots from previous series into a rich, suspenseful and daunting plot. (Yes - definitely read the previous series!!) I didn't imagine that the "bad guys" in this book came from where they did. So clever!!

I really, really love this series!!

I enjoy a number of Hignett's books and this series is fun also. I almost didn't read it because the cover art is just demented looking though. Sorry - just my opinion.

Chloe is a good main character that wants nothing more than to be a better person. The scenes with her and her attempts to kill her previous "trainer" are so tongue in cheek and strange - it's great. The torture scenes are pretty graphic but the writing style is good and world building is great. Good character development - even from Book 1. You get to see more of Dwayne's "bad" side in this one too. I'm totally fine with a very slow burn for Malik since Chloe can't seem to think straight around him. I don't want the books to become nothing but a focus on the lust.

Fractured Gods (Waif in the wild book 2) by Lauretta Hignett is a 5 ⭐️ read.
Chloe starts to find dead bodies all around Castlemaine and needs to find out who is killing off the locals all the while she’s trying to avoid the Werewolf Alpha and his pack. There so much going on in this book I don’t want to spoil it by saying too much, I will say though that you know an author is brilliant when your heartbreaks for an assassin. I loved Imogen then Sandy and didn’t think I would love anyone more than Prue but Chloe is definitely my favourite, this author can write kicka$$ heroines.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

yes!!!

Ok that cliffy took me out of my brain functions. Holy madness Batman!!! Ok first, Chloe has a new chosen family. Jeb and Daphne and Sarah and Dwayne and Nate. Even her neighbor Mason and Norma. And the countess. I’m learning that I’m loving them all… except Braxton. Yeah he needs to die horribly. Seriously. There’s some crazy going on. And this twist with the god realm and their essences and the magic and all the things that go with it. I’m amazed. I’m devastated. I’m stunned. And I’m absolutely ecstatic! This series is flipping downright magnificent! Now I gotta wait for book 3!

Chloe has a few problems on her plate – she’s been kidnapped by the sadistic Ironclaw clan of werewolves, bodies are appearing around town, and her group of companions – the goose Dwayne, the hellhound Jeb and the poltergeist Sarah. Life certainly isn’t dull. And of course to top it off there is the splinter god Malik who still needs her help.
Chloe is an interesting character part the assassin that she was trained to be since a small child and part the dumb, sweet blonde that she was spelled to be.
This book has action, a bit of a mystery, humour, some violence and the slow romance.
This ends on a small cliffhanger just like the other books.
It is a quick, fun, easy read.

Wow!

The first book was good. This one one ups it! Sweet Chloe and ice cold assassin Chloe continue to slowly sync up, hopefully merging into someone she is comfortable with.
There is action galore in this offering. It appears there is a serial killer on the loose targeting supernaturals of all kinds. While Malik continues his quest to find and return all his brothers and sisters before his deadline, Chloe takes on the task of finding and stopping whoever is behind the growing number of casualties.
Come along for a wild ride! And the ending??? You don’t want to miss this!!

Here is a great example of a book that hooks you from the beginning and pulls you on a breathtaking ride. You are so immersed in the story that when the book ends and you realize it is over, all you can do is beg for more. Lauretta Hignett did a phenomenal job weaving a story with fast paced action, well written characters, and a vivid world full of fantastic and dangerous creatures that keeps you reading well past what is wise! Pick up this second installment in the series, and escape into this fabulous world.

I received an ARC, this is my honest review.

Unputdownable. I love Chloe, she’s just the right level of badass. She has some magical abilities - she can see the reality of everyone including reading their thoughts. But most of the time, she manages to sort the problem by clever but more mundane means. She seems to collect dangerous friends too.

The plot was fast moving and clever. The characters are involved, flawed and funny. There’s a slow burn romance and the whole book was just engrossing.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC but my opinions are my honest views on the book.

Aaaaaaaah ok this books starts off full throttle and does not stop. Chloe is whisked away to the ironclaw pack. Her experiences there leave her with a new member of her little family, Nathaniel's niece, Daphne. Even bigger problems- someone is killing castlemaine's citizens. Chloe and Dwayne search for answers- ok Malik helps too. The discovery of who the killer is, and who they are killing for, changes the course of Chloe's focus.

Ends, not on a cliffy, but with major info drop 👀

Chole likes living in she's found a town where she belongs. After being an assassin, Chole wants to work for Nathaniel at the gym and help people. Chole has the ability to see others' thoughts, which makes her an asset to Malik, the vampire king, in locating his siblings. One morning, she goes out the back door and finds a dead body. Grab this book to see what happens next. I have found another author to read Lauretta Hignet. I received this book with the understanding that I would leave an honest review.

Hignett Rocks Again!

Chloe has to be one of my all time heroines! Such an incredible woman yet she is almost crippled by her insecurities. Just like the rest of us. We can all relate to this. Time and time again she saves the world, still she feels unworthy of salvation. Hopefully, with the love of her closest friends and her champion, Malik, she will find redemption. Lauretta Hignett's characters are wonderfully intricate. I plan on savoring everything she has ever written.
She is now my favorite urban fantasy Author.

Chloe is a one woman shoe. I love her.

Chloe just can't catch a break. She's kidnapped, fights the lake monster, rescues a child and bodies are dropping left and right and those are just the small potatoes of what happens to her. I thoroughly enjoy this series I only wish there was more chemistry and romance between her and Mallik. Dwayne is still one of my favorites to read about. His personality really comes out and he never actually says a word, I love it. Bombshell at the end will leave you shocked.

The 2nd book of Chloe's and her endearing, murderous friends, Dwayne didn't fail to deliver all of his shenanigans! There is a serial Killer on the loose with a shopping list of next victims, its Chloe's job to save them. So many twists and turns in this book and it makes a fantastic read! I feel like I'm invested as much as Chloe is at certain characters getting their just deserts. I hope revenge is on the horizon in the coming books!
