The inspiring, life-affirming memoir from Nicola Nuttall about her incredible daughter Laura
When Nicola Nuttall was told that her 18-year-old daughter Laura had only 12 months to live, following a diagnosis of the most aggressive form of brain cancer, glioblastoma multiforme, she couldn’t begin to process her emotions. It was her greatest fear come true.
But while her mother struggled to adjust and searched for new treatments, Laura made a decision: she would live her life to the full and embark on an extraordinary bucket list.
Meeting Michelle Obama, piloting a Royal Navy ship, sky diving, going on safari in South Africa, driving monster trucks, taking tea at the Ritz, dancing on stage in front of thousands and graduating from university were just some of the many adventures Laura undertook.
The Stars Will Still Be There is Nicola’s raw but beautifully written account of helping her daughter make the most of her remaining time, while dealing with her own pain along with that of her younger daughter Gracie and husband, Mark.
This is a heartbreaking, life-changing memoir that reveals the fragility of humans, the power of love and why we should all ‘Be More Laura’ every single day.
I had not come across Laura's story before reading this book though how I missed it I am not sure. What an inspiring family the Nuttalls are. We should embrace every moment we have left and embrace the values Laura lived by too. A hard book to read especially when you are already feeling weepy due to a bad dose of COVID however as I felt nauseous and weak the realisation that this lovely young person was being sick continuously and having to contend with her body slowly shutting down with only one end in sight and yet resolutely thinking postively, grasping every opportunity and putting others before herself put me totally to shame. I will try to #BemoreLaura from now on. Also congratulations to Nicola for being such a steadfast pushy rock in the face of an unbearable situation and for bringing up two lovely, kind and generous girls in the first place.
Heartbreaking to read. Like many I followed Laura’s story on social media, hoping and praying that she would live much longer. Reading about her in this book is truly inspiring, we learn more about Laura and what she managed to achieved in the short time she had while undergoing gruelling surgeries and treatment. She was an incredible young woman, her love of life, adventure, her concern for others, her social consciousness and the love she had for her family and friends shines through. It’s a beautiful written book full of love and hope, have tissues handy. We should all aim to #BeMoreLaura
