Travel Photography in a Day for Dummies gave an overview about the three kinds of cameras people used for travel photography, which are the smartphones, digital cameras, and the DSLR's. Serge Timacheff also described the limitations and specific specialties of each. He also spoke about tips on how to protect one's camera from the unexpected elements, because of traveling. Traveling deals with plenty of weather changes.

The book was a quick read. It is ideal for reading in the airport, during a flight, or probably just the night before the travel day.

For those who have not been on a vacation for a long time, this book gives a fresh and easy-to-read refreshment course.

Good primer

Focus on high end cameras. My thought is to ditch the PhD-push here dummy camera and only use my iPhone. Several tips applied in the book and I love the rule do thirds!

I'm going to forebear giving a rating here, since one handicap the book had -- at least as I viewed it on my kindle -- was not the author's fault. Namely, everything was in black and white. Duh, I suppose, but this seriously detracted from the whole reading experience. And it also isn't fair to criticize the author for brevity in certain areas, since going into the book it is made perfectly clear that that's what is aimed for.

On balance I suppose if I were to ignore the issue my now seemingly out of date Kindle caused I'd give the book at least three stars. But if I did not I'd probably think two stars a fair rating...so I skip that whole business and move on.

And, I suppose this book also wasn't exactly what I was looking for. What I'm more interested in at this point is figuring out what camera to buy, rather than getting into the nuts and bolts of photo compoosition. But, again, no false advertising or misleading statements I can complain about. So I'll happily take what I was given in that area, and shaddup and move along. (FTR, what was given seemed both balanced and in reasonable detail when he did discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different camera types.)

This short 112 page book is a great short read and covers and/or refreshes you on all the basics of photography. As the title states, it is readable in a day so don't expect extremely detailed information, however, it does have links to the dummies.com website to get some more detailed information. The book covers a broad range of different types of photography, cameras, and settings, which makes the book a good read for someone who is picking up a camera for the first time or for a professional who needs a refresh.

It wasn't quite what I was expecting. There were some good points throughout but I expected more tips on how to photograph a vacation from different views, not just suggestions that you should find different angles. There were some how-to topics included, but not what I was wanting. I'll try again with a different book.

While the part of the book that dealt with photography was a nice refresher, the majority of the book focused on topics I had no interest in like social media and options for backing up photos. While I can understand how this information might be useful to a beginner, it left me disappointed.
