Mandi Kontos is an urban fantasy writer who lives in Melbourne Australia with her husband, tuxedo cat Rajah, a plethora of plants and a collection of journals she never writes in. By day she is a lighting designer and by night a writing mindset mentor and word wrangler.

She has a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Writing and Publishing and a Masters in Creative Writing. She is a perpetual student and loves to learn.

I had really high hopes for this book, since Egyptian mythology sounds really cool and fun to read about but unfortunately the book didn’t hold up. It started off good and I was intrigued but Lucy and Travis relationship and a lot of their interactions made me feel really uncomfortable. Him being into her is fine and I don’t mind a bit of pining but some of his comments were just really creepy and then her feeling bad for hurting his feelings? It got even worse in Chapter 16 where Travis first kissed Lucy after she said no and then had to convince her to sleep with him. That doesn’t sound like consent to me. Reading “He made me nervous but I was in too deep.” made me feel super uncomfortable and I actually had to put the book down for a while. After that it didn’t get any better and aside from that the story wasn’t compelling enough to make up for it either unfortunately.

DNF at 72%. I just couldn’t keep reading it. The blurb was very interesting and I love a novel about any cultural myths, but this was not well executed. And it’s a shame.
I felt like I was 15 again, reading a bad fanfic with horrible male characters. Unnecessary information and drama. Friends sleeping with each other and being moody…definitely not what I was expecting to read. Multiple mentions of SA/r4pe that didn’t add anything to the characters or storyline. Not to mention no triggers mentioned at the beginning of the book, but maybe because I got an ARC version?
Likely won’t be reading the second book in the series either. It follows Lucy’s twin, Devin, instead.

Unfortunately I DNF this book.
I loved the idea behind it and the potential this book had, however I found it repetitive and ended up catching myself skim reading.
Everyone is a descendent of an Egyptian royal and it was a bit like high school drama with all the main characters dating/sleeping with each other and getting all territorial about it. The mfc was difficult to like and Travis was overly possessive, borderline forceful.

What I did like:
-a magical ancient book! (I'm a huge The Mummy fan)
-unique take on Ancient Egyptian mythology, bringing in werewolves, though I think this could have been developed more
-The cover is gorgeous
-the spell/magick using different elements near the end


However, a couple things bugged me as a history nerd. 1. Ancient Egyptians definitely knew what rape was. It was punished as a crime back then and I get what the author was going for but it's just not historically accurate. For centuries martial rape was not acknowledged in many cultures but that is not what she was referring to either.
2. I liked the idea of using the months from the Egyptian Coptic calendar but when I looked them up online a lot of the ones mentioned in the book were spelled differently. Not sure why?

It also felt a little incesty with Hunter and Lucy being the direct descendants of Karrept and Nefetiti.

Possible error-when we first meet Karrept and Nefetiti's son, Khaldun, we are told he is in Tyler's body but then Karrept goes into his?

Also there was a scene where it seemed Osiris had a beak? Did the author confuse him with Thoth?

I was also not really into the messy situation between Travis and Lucy, between Travis's pushiness and Lucy giving him mixed signals I didn't enjoy it.

But I like the unique take on bringing Egyptian mythology into our world. I don’t know why but with the young characters dealing with the supernatural and relationship drama gave me Vampire Diaries vibes. Maybe the story wasn't really for me.

I really wanted to love this book because that cover is gorgeous and Egypt fascinates me. but I just couldn't. I should have read the first chapter before buying it, because I was already struggling with the writing style by the end of it. there's not much variation in sentences. but what really bugged me was the male characters. the toxic guy friend pressuring the fmc into a physical relationship. gross! and then this weird incestuous relationship with her brother. nope. nope. nope. 1 star

This was fun, good page turner, with interesting ideas and context. It just didn’t quite get there for me on execution. There were too many moments where a bit more world building, research or more realistic plot hole filling would have made the book a 4-5 star debut.

For example you cannot drive from Cairo to Luxor and back in a day, it is not summer in Melbourne and Cairo at the same time and fixing a plot hole about why characters broke up with a very traumatic event in a sentence and then both of them going “oh well, we’re good, let’s never mention it again” is very jarring!

For the world building, yes a lot of this was held back for plot, but there was not much given at the start as to the magic system to ground the book in “reality”. For example, I never found out whether “the Bond” was a one of a kind thing or normal, but rare, in their world. In fact quite a few times I was wondering was there an earlier book which explained a lot of the earlier events and the world was the reason why all these one liners were put in and never fleshed out! There were a lot of different types of powers and power groups which, without a holistic explanation, felt tacked on each time a new one was dropped in. A little more scene setting about diversity of power in the world would have helped.

This book is a paranormal fantasy with a romance subplot, cleverly interwoven with ancient Egyptian gods and Pharaohs and mythology.

The plot focuses on a world in which werewolves and witches exist and use of magical abilities is essentially outlawed. There are timeline jumps between present day and back to things that happened to Nefertiti in ancient Egypt. The POV also jumps between Lucy the FMC and a descendent of Nefertiti’s bloodline and Nefertiti.

There is a love triangle between the FMC and the two MMCs — a witch, Hunter, and a werewolf, Travis. Sometimes the Travis gave me ick desperate vibes (think Jacob from Twilight) but I think that’s what his character was meant to be like, and to help Lucy choose her fated mate, Hunter.

Lucy’s twin brother and sister are missing, presumed dead but Lucy knows they aren’t dead. In Faded Fragments we are taken on a journey to try and find her siblings that also involves fighting off Nefertiti trying to reincarnate into present day and take over Lucy’s life. There are epic battle scenes with Karrept, Nefertiti’s secret lover, and many of the Egyptian gods.

You will love this book if you enjoy:

With a Werewolf, Witch and Watcher twist, this book is full of intrigue and unexpected turns, all set under a hot Egyptian sun.

The Mummy vibes are strong (the 1999 version... the best if you ask me 😆) but if you enjoyed the concept of a love that spans thousands of years, and the atrocities committed in the name of that love and the tragedy that follows, you'll enjoy this story.

Mandi weaves old and new timelines seamlessly, giving the reader a glimpse into the minds of Lucy and her descendant Nefertiti, their wants, needs, and how hard they both work to get what they desire.

The introduction of the three protagonists as bonded gives the story an interesting vibe, with each bringing their quirks (and sometimes questionable decisions) to the forefront, driving the narrative along to its ultimate conclusion.

Faded Fragments was such an adventurous and fun book to read. There is such a strong cast of characters, and I am so glad this is only the first book in a series, because I can’t wait to spend more time getting to know all of these people who have clawed, spelled, and wriggled their way into my heart.

The twists and turns woven into the plot kept me on the edge of my seat all the way until the final page, and my mind is racing with all the possibilities that Mandi has left open for exploration.

I would highly recommend Faded Fragments to anyone who is looking for a fun, yet tense, adventure, especially people who have a fascination with Egyptian mythology. (I can’t be the only one who obsessively read Egyptology as a kid, right?)

I can’t wait for the second book to come out, but until it does, I will just have to stalk Mandi’s social media for updates, and continue admiring the gorgeous cover on my shelf!

I really struggled with this one!
Recently diagnosed with cancer, I found myself finishing pages with little comprehension of what I'd read! My mind kept wandering!
My broken reading may factor into my overall enjoyment of the book so take this review with a grain of salt.

I actually had to put the book down for awhile!
When I came back to it, I was still struggling!
I didn't enjoy the dynamic between Travis and Lucy. They were supposed to be best friends and he was practically forcing himself on her even when she said no! Ick!
Some parts were rushed with no real explanation, other parts drawn out!
Overall it was slow and I had to push to finish it.
I did feel like it was lacking in the execution.

I did find the concept and ideas really interesting!
I love Egypt and Egyptian Mythology so it was an interesting change!
As a debut, it was a intriguing with great potential. I would still read book 2 because I need answers!

Egyptian mythology, werewolves and mummies. Oh my!

Faded Fragments is the first instalment of a story that spans millennia. Love the multi POV showing the ancient history of the characters and the complexity of the world they are now living in, in modern times.

Faded Fragments is one of those books which is fun, fabulous and fast paced. It’ll keep your interest the whole way through.

I'm an epic fantasy reader through and through, so I rarely read urban fantasy. When I say that I loved this book, you know it's meaningful!
Who doesn't love a story that masterfully weaves ancient Egyptian myths and gods into our modern world, has epic fight scenes, just the right amount of spice, and is built on the firm foundation of chosen family? I know I do.
Kontos writes in a way that is both compelling and emotional—this is a book you won't be able to put down. We follow characters through some of their darkest times, but we also get to see the importance of their friendship bond. Chosen family is one of my favourite tropes, regardless of genre, and the connection between Lucy, Lili, and Travis gives me starry eyes. Love love love.

I really enjoyed the rich mythology woven throughout this story, especially the unique magic system and the strong sibling bond between Destiny, Devin, and Lucy. Their connection — and the deep love they had for the other main characters — gave the story real heart.

That said, I found the relationship dynamics between Aten, Nefertiti, Karrept, and their ascendants a little confusing, and I sometimes felt unsure about the story’s direction. The plot often felt busy, with many threads and possibilities hinted at, but few fully explored, which left me feeling a bit lost at times.

Despite that, I’m definitely looking forward to reading the author’s second book.

ONE OF THOSE BOOKS I COULDN’T PUT DOWN!!

Being transported into Lucy’s and Nefertiti’s world simultaneously, heightened the rush I felt with diving into Mandi’s well curated fantastical world. From the moment I picked up the book to putting it down today, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

The characters are so well written and full of life, that reading this book made me feel like I was walking right besides them as they fought head on for their lives.

I really awesome concept, I love the introduction of Egyptian mythology! It was really nice also reading a story set partly in Melbourne, my home town! I met Mandi at a con and she was so lovely I decided to give this book a go. It was a compelling read, I genuinely loved the characters and wanted to know what happened to them. The writing felt a bit janky in some sections that were fluff chapters but the main scenes were so well written. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Mandi develops as a writer!

From the intimate scenes to the action/fighting scenes, I loved every moment of this book. It isn't my usual type of book, but then again I didn't even know I liked reading fantasy until just recently. The story keeps you entertained and you never know what is going to happen next. Plenty of blood and gore for those like me who like a story a little darker. I especially liked that the ancient Egyptian theme is still tied to our beautiful Australia. Would highly recommend.

I haven't picked up a book in such a long time but when I purchased this book I read it a span of a week or so as the story kept my interest all the way through.

The characters came alive for me, and I found that I came invested in the outcome for each. The way that mythology is seamlessly blended into a modern story makes it such an enjoyable read. The book is well written and flows to keep the reader engaged and glued to the pages of the book.

I cannot wait for the second book.

Such a unique book, I have not read anything set in Egypt with the culture and mythology.

I loved seeing so many gods, goddesses, and guardians throughout the story.

A beautifully written tale of friendship, family, loss, love, battles, mystery, and respect.

With a villain, you can truly hate and another you can't help but feel for and kinda love.

I am excited to see what we get next!!

The world and characters have been created with a lot of thought and care.
