Welcome to the Ballroom, Vol. 3 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next four chapters (8–11) of the on-going manga series with a bonus story: "Ogasawara Dance Studio Girl Talk".
It is the Tenpei Cup, an informal and historical dance competition, because it is an informal dance competition, Shizuku Hanaoka is able to compete despite her six month suspension. It is Tatara Fujita first official competitions and his partner is Mako Akagi. On the line is the future for the partnership for Shizuku Hanaoka, who Fujita believes should be with Kiyoharu Hyōdō. If Fujita wins, Gaju Akagi must give up his partnership with Shizuku Hanaoka and return to his sister, Mako Akagi – his sister and Fujita's current partner.
The tankōbon covers the first three rounds of the competition: waltz, foxtrot, and quickstep with the Final Round being a Solo Waltz. Tatara Fujita and Mako Akagi makes a cute partnership as both has generally similar attitudes and seems like two cute puppies meeting each other. Partway through the competition Kiyoharu Hyōdō and his mother, Marisa Hyōdō, a dance instructor, shows up to the competition to watch.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tomo Takeuchi. Tatara Fujita participates in his first official tournament in the Tenpei Cup. Fujita learns and improves as he dances in the competition as he and Mako Akagi goes through the first three rounds of the waltz, foxtrot, and quickstep with the tankōbon ending midway through Tatara Fujita's Solo Waltz with Mako Akagi.
All in all, Welcome to the Ballroom, Vol. 3 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
This manga just gets everything about competitive dancing right - from the forced smiles to the energy to that one overly masculine guy trying to make up for the fact that he's a dancer.
3.5 stars. The first bit didn't hold my attention as much as I'd have liked. But once the competition really gets going it was well done. I liked seeing Mako flower. The difference when dancing with a good lead and frame is night and day and I appreciate how that was shown in this volume.
"I'm done with Kiyoharu." -- Hanaoke Shizuku, fed up and angry
I want to elaborate on my feelings here (!!!) Shizuku suddenly finds herself completely in the dark, and she has no idea why no one decided to inform her about 1) Hyodo's injury 2) the severity of Hyodo's injury 3) the ability to decide for herself and her partner if she would like for them to continue with the competition; and I think that's what hit her the hardest. Like, Hyodo just went on ahead and decided for both of them, you know, that they're going to stay in the competition in the teeth of everything that's wrong with his health.
"That's how little you trust me, huh?" even though Hyodo doesn't appear in any of the panels in this volume, this line was for him, still. in my review of the previous volume I titled this the phenomenology of [angry] yearning from Hanaoke Shizuku's point-of-view and I'm carrying that title over to this one lmao
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
3.5 After 3 volumes of this I must say I'm not that into the world of dancing. It's an alright middle of the road story for me so far, but nothing about the dancing part really grabs my attention and interest. Aside that, I can see the manga is renowned for going on and off hiatus and apparently no news have been given about the series status either in a year or so, according to a quick search on google and reddit... With the fact I'm more inclined to DNF the series since by the end of the day, the series doesn't grab me enough to read whatever remaining amount of volumes my library has available digitally. That said I wouldn't say it's a bad series just not my jam and with the uncertainty of it's existence I cba read more volumes.
I like watching competitive dance, so this manga was a fun one to jump right into. I think my one real complaint is that we don't get enough of the behind-the-scenes practice. Our hero seems to grasp the concept of dance a little too easily. I want to see more sweat, blood, and tears! We've seen some, but not enough. Ha ha. Dance is tough on you physically and emotionally, and I want to see that. Instead, there's a bit too much of a Cinderella feel to it. Maybe we'll get more of the true grit in these athletes as the series progresses. I am only three volumes in, after all...
...you finally figured out that the women actually exist. You finally figured out that dance isn't just about the men. Arguably, the females are where our eyes are supposed to go in this type of dance configuration. It finally didn't just look like they'd been drawn to just be along for the ride of the lead and having no real clue as to what was happening on the floor.
Un tome plein d’émotions ! Vers la fin j’ai même failli pleurer tellement j’étais à fond dans le match. Jusqu’à maintenant c’est mon tome préféré, j’ai vraiment hâte de lire la suite 😊
The last volume for me that I could find, I can only hope that I will be able to find the other volumes one day. As this one ended pretty awesome and I want to know what happened.
This whole volume focusses on the Tenpei competition, and also mostly on Tatara's and Gaju's little bet/competition. It was highly interesting and I just flew through this volume. I really loved to see Tatara and Mako dance, they make such a cute couple, though Tatara still has to learn a lot. Not only dancing, not only positions, but also to be a leader, to make it through the competition without losing balance, to make it through competitions in one go without pain, feeling tired or looking worn-out. He still has a long way to go, but he is doing fine so far. He is amazing with a lot of things, he takes care of his partner and truly does his best.
Of course Tatara also learns that his shadow stuff might not be so kind as he thought. And of course I saw it coming. Shadow stuff is fun, but using it in competitions might be a bit overkill. You are stealing someone else's moves and to use that in a competition? Not really the best way to get people to like you. Most of these judges and people in the competition know the couples and their moves, so if a total newbie suddenly dancing like he one of those top guys.. yeah. Poor Tatara though, he felt so bad throughout the volume. :(
Mako was a real surprise in this. I thought she was really timid and shy, but she truly showed her colours in this one. She is a wonderful dancer and she can still grow. We also find out why she can't dance with Gaju, and I can say that it is also expected that this was the problem. Mako and Tatara make a perfect couple and I think she and Tatara can become a couple to watch out for. By the way, I just loved what she did when Gaju called her a kid. I just laughed out loud, especially during a later scene. :) That girl is great.
Gaju, bleh I hate guys like that. His attitude is horrendous, he is a dick and I hate how he dismisses and disses people. He should really work on his attitude. Nice dancing, but attitude also counts.
Shizuku, I don't like her that much any more. I don't like how high and mighty she acts all the time. Acting like she is so much better. And sure, she is good, but that doesn't mean she has to act like royalty all the time. I truly hope she will learn a lesson soon, or that someone kicks her off that high throne of hers.
It was really interesting to see how the competition worked, how it was judged and we also got a peek at how the judges thought. I didn't expect to Hyoudou's mom at the competition, nor did I expect Hyoudou himself.
I won't talk about the art, I have spend 2 other reviews about it, and I think I made my point. :)
The art style really captures the essence of ballroom dance. It was so pretty that I couldn't take my eyes off. I love Tatara's and Mako's character development, I root for them so much! I'm addicted! This is such a great series!!!! 4 stars!!!
