Welcome to the Ballroom, Vol. 10 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next seven chapters (42–48) of the on-going manga series.
The tankōbon continues the Tokyo Metropolitan Dance Sport Tournament and concludes the semi-finals and the first half of the final rounds (Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, and Slow Foxtrot). Tatara Fujita and Chinatsu Hiyama and Masami Kugimiya and Tame Idogawa are two of the six pairs that made it to the finals. Thanks to some advice via the phone by Kaname Sengoku, Tatara Fujita and Chinatsu Hiyama evolved their dancing as they became more of a unit than two people.
Judges are having difficulty and are divided in deciding which team is the better dancers as Kugimiya-Idogawa team are more traditional and Fujita-Hiyama team are more evolutional. Unfortunately, during the Viennese Waltz, Masami Kugimiya develops a muscle cramp, but is willing to go through with the rest of the competition.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tomo Takeuchi. Besides the dance competition, this tankōbon delve into the back story of Masami Kugimiya and reveals the reason of his dislike for Tatara Fujiya. For ten years Masami Kugimiya had a similar attitude as Tatara Fujiya about dance, but then he was hit by a truck. After his rehabilitation and a year of practice, Masami Kugimiya returned to competitive dancing with a more jaded attitude.
All in all, Welcome to the Ballroom, Vol. 10 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
This volume was jammed packed! The art was fantastic. Tatara finally found a way to match Chinatsu and she has finally found a way to trust Tatara's lead. And Kugimiya - what an conflicting characters, one moment he is rude and harsh and unlikable, but then you understand where it is all coming from and you feel for the guy. His backstory was really well done, and gave you a lot of character development and sympathy for him as a poor lost boy just looking for attention and approval but ultimately it all leads to unfulfilled aspirations and disappointment - you see his inner struggle and hatred that he has for himself and how that effects how he treats others. Great stuff, just wish we could get a little more about his partner, she is a blank slate still after all this time.
. Kugimiya's backstory made me very emotional. I'm loving this tournament arc! Fujita and Chinatsu are also fascinating in this arc, I like seeing their growth and change. When sports manga hits, it hits hard.
This competition sure is long. Yes, there are flashbacks, this volume had a major one with Kugemiya, but it's still very long. At least there are plenty of twists and turns in there.
Sengoku is just the hottest guy 😍 I also feel a burning envy for the passion that these characters have for dance. I want to find something to dedicate my life to as well!
