Warfighting was published to establish a Marine Corps philosophy and doctrine presented in an easy-to-read format. Every officer should read and reread this text, to understand it, and to take its message to heart. Warfighting has stimulated discussion and debate from classrooms to wardooms, training areas to combat zones. The philosophy contained in this publication has influenced our approach to every task we have undertaken.
The United States Department of the Navy (DoN) was established by an Act of Congress on April 30, 1798, to provide a government organizational structure to the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps and, when directed by the President (or Congress during time of war), the United States Coast Guard, as a service within the Navy, though each remain independent service branches. The Department of the Navy was an Executive Department and the Secretary of the Navy was a member of the President's cabinet until 1949, when amendments to the National Security Act of 1947 changed the name of the National Military Establishment to the Department of Defense and made it an Executive Department. The Department of the Navy then became, along with the Department of the Army and Department of the Air Force, a Military Department within the Department of Defense: subject to the authority, direction and control of the Secretary of Defense.
Warfighting is a field manual on USMC’s war philosophy and its application in wars and battlefields. This is a reproduction of the early treatise on the US Marine's Guide to Warfare and essential read on the nature of maneuver warfare. This book is publicly distributed other than making it classified. What fascinates me about this book is, it goes deeper into war strategies, tactics and maneuvers. War and combat zone are volatile. There three levels of war: Strategic, Operational and Tactical. Each level has its own principles, if applied properly, any military force will get upper hand on its opponent.
The ongoing warfare in middle east and the annihilation of some countries are the result of successful application of strategies and tactics outlined in this manual. This manual is about more than just conducting military operations; it sets forth the framework for success in all endeavors. The concepts covered in Warfighting apply not only to warfare but to business, sports, and life in general. Warfighting emphasizes on adaptability, creativity, personal initiative, and the ability to improvise to overcome obstacles as they present themselves regardless of uncertainty.
Other than military personnel, this book is immensely helpful for people who are running business, involved in project works, planning and preparing volunteers for disaster relief and response. Any organization can use the principles of maneuver detailed in this book to run an efficient operation.
This book is a quick read and concise distillation of the core concepts and philosophy of war, as viewed by the US Military. I believe that war analogies in business are often misplaced for the simple reason that business should be a force of creation, while war is a force of destruction, yet understanding the tactics of war can still be helpful both for its own sake as an instrument of policy but also as a business leader in highly competitive industry. Many concepts transfer, such as when evaluating a competitor, understanding their center of mass and vulnerabilities should inform product strategy. I also found that prioritization of boldness and initiative in leaders while abolishing a ‘Zero Defects’ mindset parallels the succes factors of entrepreneurship. The successful operation of a war machine rests on efficient organization, planning and infrastructure while being highly adaptable to the fluidity of war .
Highly recommended! I don't remember when was the last time that I read a book and made so many notes, not to mention that it felt manly af reading it :D
It is a fantastic, clearly written, concise piece on how US Military organizations understand war and how they approach conflict and dissect it into structural parts.
This book has many good points on leadership, organizing work, and even psychology to lead people in such a challenging and unpredictable environment as war. And just, in general, a book with so many valuable points that can be directed in many life situations.
"The essential thing is action. Action has three stages: the decision born of thought, the order or preparation for execution, and the execution itself. All three stages are governed by the will. The will is rooted in character, and for the man of action, character is of more critical importance than intellect. Intellect without will is worthless, will without intellect is dangerous."
USMC's first guiding doctrinal publication. Succint, on point and insightful yet never bogging down in details. Clausewitzian in its conceptions and elucidating warfighting philosophy of the USMC, also for civilians like myself.
Situational awareness is key. Learn and observe your area of operations or wherever you live. Study who is in your neighborhood a notice when someone new comes in.
The is the best book I've ever read about engaging in conflict to be successful. I've applied it with great success in competitive business situations and for educating colleagues about how to engage as a team and institution in competition with other institutions. I've probably read it 10 times. It's wonderful!
