When it comes to unforgettable travel experiences, journeys through the Americas top our bucket list. Imagine a road trip across the US, cruising along the Amazon, or taking an epic train ride through the Canadian Rockies. Across this beautiful landmass, it's the journey, rather than the destination, that's always mattered the most.
Featuring over 150 inspirational entries, Unforgettable Journeys The Americas is a vibrant celebration of taking the scenic route. We've picked the best adventures across the Americas, from soaking up the oceanside scenery on a drive along the Pacific Coast Highway to sailing between sandy islands in the Caribbean. Of course, the big-hitters are covered - hiking the mammoth Appalachian Trail, driving along the iconic Route 66, and cruising past icy glaciers in Alaska and the Inside Passage - but we also take you off-the-beaten path, roaming Guyana's Kaieteur Falls, kayaking through Canada's Nahanni River, and navigating the twisting corners of the Hana Highway in Hawaii. We've organized the book by types of transport, so whether you're an avid hiker, cyclist or driver, or love to be on the water or on the rails, we've got you covered. It's time to take the slow road and truly appreciate all the Americas have to offer.
This amazing books takes you on a journey through the most scenic places in the Americas. The photography is stunning and the narratives vividly capture the essence of each location, making it a captivating read for armchair travelers and adventurers alike. For those who love hiking, traveling, and exploring new places, this book is a perfect companion.
"Unforgettable Journeys: The Americas" is a book featuring scenic journeys organized into these categories: On Foot, By Road, By Bike, By Rail and By Water. I would recommend the "hard" copy of this book as opposed to the digital copy because it features beautiful photography and would make a wonderful coffee table book. This book features the Americas' most inspirational journeys from South America to Canada to the Caribbean.
The "On Foot" chapter features a combination of well-known and lesser-known trails/walks. Featured trails include the Appalachian Trail, Cliff Walk and Angel's Landing. Information is provided for each trail such as distance, time, and difficulty. The "By Road" chapter features many interesting road trips such as the On the Road--New York City to San Francisco journey. This 2-3 weeklong trip follows in the route of novelist Jack Kerouac. If that's too much of an undertaking, try the 2-3 day long North Maine Woods or the weeklong journey called The Crooked Road which is a musical-heritage trail. Bicyclists will be in interested in the section on bike trails. Trails featured include "Underground Railroad" and the "Prairie Spirit Trail." If you enjoy leisurely and scenic train rides, check out the "By Rail" section featuring both short and long train rides such as the Grand Canyon Railway and the well-known Mount Washington Cog Railway. Finally, the By Water section of this book features steamboat rides on the Mississippi to sailing on Lake Michigan.
This is definitely a book I'd love to add to my collection as it features so many wonderful ideas for planning all sorts of adventures! Thank you to the publisher for the digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to the NetGalley for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is almost certainly a book better read with a hard copy rather than digital. I read this on my desktop using Adobe Digital Editions and the layout was a bit haphazard with maps cut off and text boxes scattered randomly. The photos were beautiful though and I can imagine would be stunning on coffee table book-sized glossy paper. I like how the itineraries are presented -- by mode of travel (on foot, by road, by bike, by rail, by water) but not sure I would characterize all trips as "unforgettable journeys".
If you don't have a large format travel book yet, this one and the rest in the series (UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEYS and UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEYS: EUROPE) are not a bad place to start your collection (and fuel your wanderlust), but I have a lot of books similar to them already and this series are more library borrows than keepers to me.
This is really a nicely produced book! I enjoyed the selection of journeys, mix of graphics/fonts/details, and--especially and happily--the photographs! (On that note, the book would best be read, then, on a tablet or as a physical copy--i.e. not via "regular"/e-ink ereader.)
There's just enough info in each entry to whet the reader's appetite; the entries are by no means exhaustive, but certainly provide the critical info for you to find out more elsewhere as desired. The description lengths vary; some are longer than others, and I'm always curious as to the whys and wherefores on that--the editors' whim? But of course, being nonexhaustive, it can't please everyone. ;) What interests me is by no means going to interest everyone else in exactly the same way. So, kudos to the editors for producing a great starting point for readers, whether armchair or IRL traveler.
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
So many incredible places made this book/list, and honestly, there are tons more that easily could be in here too.
This is the perfect book for any travel loving, hiking, biking, water way transporting person. Basically, if you love to see the world, and want to know more places to go to, this is for you.
Needless to say a lot of new to me places were added on my travel bucket list. So many unique, incredible places on this planet.
Thank you NetGalley for my E-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I’m not the first person to volunteer for a multiday hike, but there are a few in this book I may want to do now. The fantastic part of the book is that it isn’t just journeys by foot but chapters on foot, by road (I love a good road trip!), by bike, by rail (cool!), and by water. The images are beautiful..I wish they were larger.
Thank you, NetGalley and DK Eyewitness Travel, for allowing me to daydream about the places I want to explore.
Unforgettable Journeys: The Americas is a beautiful book. The journeys covered in this book were separated into methods of transportation: by foot, by car, by train, and even by boat. There was a great variety of time commitments with the journeys - from a few hours to weeks. The photographs are stunning! I loved the variety of locations the book covered as well. This will make a beautiful coffee table book in print!
Unforgettable indeed. I loved the journeys this book took me on as I read through it. The book was divided up into sections: traveling by foot, car, rail, water and bike. We truly live in an amazing world that has so much to explore. The vignettes were short and had pictures to accompany the text as well as ANOTHER WAY: giving readers a different way to explore the area featured. I really enjoyed this trip around the world!
Stunning photographs and a wealth of information on so many different locations. I don't get to travel much, but I absolutely love books like this that allow me to see so many different places without having to leave my home.
Beautiful coffee table book. Inspiring travel ideas - a good place to get an idea or dream and head to other books for more information. Limited geographic information is given, which I found hindering.
This had great pictures. I appreciated the way the chapters were broken up and the description of each of the adventures. I also enjoyed that they were rated on difficulty level.
