The second book of the Flame and Sparrow duology. From the Ashes, a Goddess Must Rise…
After proving herself through a series of harrowing trials, Karys has found a home among the gods, alongside the Marr of Fire. Her new divine family and magic have allowed her to ascend from the rebellious, dangerous life she once led—yet the ghosts of past mistakes and betrayals linger.
Her once sworn enemy, Dravyn, understands the pain of lingering ghosts better than most. Haunted by the memories of the family he lost—and by the lives he took in retribution—the God of Fire now has one plan: Protecting the ones he has left at whatever the cost.
But the shadow of war is spreading across the realms. A war that will force both Karys and Dravyn to confront past demons. And when those demons collide, the resulting fires might burn everything to ash…
Forcing something new to rise if they want any hope of a future.

As a kid, S.M. Gaither spent way too much time playing video games like Final Fantasy and reading every book she could get her hands on instead of doing silly things like her assigned homework. As an adult…Well, not much has changed. Her goal is to write books that distract others from their life’s obligations, too, thus creating an army of fellow procrastinators over which she can reign supreme. These days, her personal favorite places to procrastinate are in the mountains near her North Carolina home, in the company of her husband, their daughter, and their very spoiled dog.
What to Expect: ➼ Touch Her & Die ➼ One Horse ➼ Found Family ➼ Gods, Elves & Mortals ➼ Multiple Realms ➼ Duet Audio ➼ Dual First Person POV
Boring, too domestic, not nearly enough Moth… I’m very sad to report that this one was a dud. This was very character driven which could have been fine, but after loving them in book one, I was surprised by how little interest I had in these characters in book two. We get to read a lot from the MMC’s POV and while he still seemed like a solid dude, nothing about him felt godly while reading from his perspective. I usually love hearing from the MMC, but for some reason his parts were a turn off for me. The FMC has an experience at the end that should have very emotional, but again, I felt completely detached. Sorry to say that this book was more along the lines of what I’ve come to expect from this author, which is frankly not much.

Pre-read: We’ll see if this one lives up to book one! Others have mentioned being dissatisfied with the ending which is ominous since this is a Duology. Hoping I won’t feel the same! 🤞🏻
I really enjoyed this ending! It definitely focuses more on emotions and less on the fun banter relationship than book one. Like book one it took me a little bit to be like fully in it, but I loved the plot and I still love their relationship.
Such a beautiful ending to a fantastic duology. I felt so many emotions through this book: joy, sadness, anger, frustration, love… all of it. I love how relatable Karys is as a character and how easy it is to read about her emotions and thoughts. Reading this sequel and watching Karys and Dravyn grow both together and apart was something I really enjoyed. I love that the story isn’t just about them but rather them AND the friends and family around them. Each person has a role to play and you get time to fall in love with all of the characters individually, while also rooting for them together as a team and a couple. Also, can’t forget about baby Moth. I loved every single scene with him in it and I desperately wish I could have a real Moth of my own!!! The epilogue was the perfect wrap-up to this story - it allowed a glimpse into how the world changed and what became of the major parts of the ending. All in all, I’m so glad to have read this duology and will always look forward to an S.M. Gaither book. The characters are always loveable, relatable and keep you wanting to read more.
Thank you to S.M. Gaither and Rachel for the ARC of this book! I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to read this early.
Thank you S.M. Gaither for the gifted ARC! I was SO EXCITED to receive this after how much I loved Flame & Sparrow. MISS GAITHER HAS DONE IT AGAIN!! This was such a beautiful story of love, healing, and growth. I really loved seeing Karys grow into her own power and confidence throughout this book. I hope we see her as a side character in future books, because I’d love to see how she is and what she accomplishes in her new role. I love Dravyn so much. He’s the sweetest, most supportive cinnamon role fire god to ever exist. The way he loves Karys is just so wholesome. And their spicy scenes were GIVINGGGGGGG. I’m also so glad that Karys and Savna were able to fix things between them. I was definitely nervous at the end of the last book for how that reunion would go, but seeing their sisterly love conquer all made my heart so happy. Valas and Mairu continued to be the greatest side characters ever. The found family in this duology is truly top notch. And I can’t forget about my baby Moth 🖤 Moth deserves the world and endless shiny objects. Overall, I’m so happy with how this duology ended. There were so many emotional moments along the way, and the author truly did such a phenomenal job at making the reader truly fall in love with the characters.

“There is no limit to what I would give you. What I would burn down to get to you. What I would build with you, forge for you. Whenever you go, whatever you become, I love you.”
SM Gaither has blown me away once again. To preface, Flame and Sparrow was my absolute favorite book of 2023 and based on what I just read, Ash and Feather might just be my favorite for this year. The world building, the plot, the characters, the romance, the spice….everything about this book/duology was just perfection and I can’t get enough of it. Ash and Feather takes place directly after the events of Flame and Sparrow. As Karys attempts to control her new powers, the impending war between the elves, humans, and gods is just beginning.
Karys is my absolute favorite FMC. She’s strong, brave, and is always willing to do what she can to save others. Throughout this book, she faces difficult challenges (especially when it comes to dealing with her powers). However, through persistence, training, and dedication she is able to figure out and overcome her obstacles. Dravyn will never cease to amaze me. Hes my dream man actually. He’s so sexy and protective over Karys. He genuinely would do anything to see her smile. He constantly faces internal battles but always puts Karys first.
The two of them together are otherworldly. They’re like magnets that are constantly drawn together. The romance in this book was swoon-worthy and the spice will have readers sweating. I genuinely have so much love for them. The plot twists were so well written and the characters were beautifully executed. The world building was actually a masterpiece. I knew exactly where the characters were throughout the entire book.
I highly highly highly recommend reading this duology. It will forever be engrained in my brain and heart.
I loved the first book of this duology but I struggled with this one, I found it a bit boring, skimmed a lot, and just felt like it was more of the same story as the first, with a lackluster ending.
HAPPY RELEASE DAY!!!!! The duology is complete and it is beautiful🧡💛 This duo is so incredible- epic world building, characters you fall in love with, exquisite magic systems, & an adorable side kick Now available! Go. Read. You’ll thank me later.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5/5. Type: 📱 e-book. Genre: adult fantasy romance.
Overall impression: the tone of the book definitely darkened in book 2. The banter with other gods, funny scenes with Moth and lighthearted romantic moments were rare. Instead, the heroine and hero had to confront their past and work together to forge a new world where everyone could live in harmony. It was bittersweet coming to the end of the duology but I'm glad I read it and it's definitely left an impression on me. 10/10 would recommend.
Best bits: ✅ Goddess ❤️ God of Fire and Forging ✅ Strong MMC/FMC relationship ✅ No miscommunication or 3rd act breakup ✅ Quality spice scenes ✅ Chosen family ✅ Confronting the past ✅ Very emotional ✅ Betrayal from loved ones ✅ Supportive characters integral to the plot ✅ Death of core characters ✅ FMC needs to find herself and forge her own path ✅ Detailed world-building ✅ Fantasy war ✅ Part of a duology ✅ Happy-ever-after (HEA)
Worst bits: ❌ Bittersweet ending ❌ More Moth scenes please
“They followed one another across the realms, across centuries, through the rise and fall of kings and queens and all manner of other things”.
This might just be one of my favorite endings to a fantasy romance hands down. The prologue had me in an absolute chokehold. It’s a happily ever after, but in a way that feels entirely unique and refreshing.
Moth, as always, is just a precious baby who will forever live in my mind rent-free. And while Zell doesn’t take up as much space in this book, he’s basically a Ponyta in my mind and I love him too.
“If she is going take me too” - was emotionally traumatizing. “This could not be” - left me dead inside.
Dravyn might just be the perfect MMC. His dynamic with Karys is everything. Her fiercest supporter, utterly devoted, and they both have such amazing character growth. I have endless love for them.

Coming out of book 1 of this duology, I was excited to see where this story was going. But this book? It felt like it was scooped out of every bit of charm and character book 1 possessed. I struggled to care about any of the characters (even the ones I loved in book 1) or anything that was going on (mostly because NOTHING happened until halfway through, and even then, nothing significant happened until almost 80% of the way through).
This book drags. More than the first one did. And without any character growth or development to add to the intrigue, I found it difficult to pay attention to what I was reading as I was reading it.
I also don't think the politics of the world are well choreographed. The way the humans and the Elves are fighting while almost simultaneously the Elves are fighting against the gods--it all just ends up feeling unfocused. In book 1, the elves' vendetta against the gods was the primary conflict. And so things made better sense. But involving the humans in this book just muddled things.
The ending was so completely unsatisfying, too. Why bother giving us a love story at all if you're not going to make the characters live happily ever after? And it's not even designed to be bittersweet. It's straight up just a girl choosing a magical promotion over being with a man who gave literally HALF of himself to keep her alive and make her what she was.
The banter was almost non-existent. There was a lot more space between Karys and Dravyn. Even the intimate moments they share couldn't convince me that Karys actually cared about Dravyn. Which was sort of heartbreaking considering how very much he obviously cared about her.
I don't think Dravyn's perspectives added much to this story either. While it might have been necessary to let us know what's going on when he and Karys are separated, I didn't really need his inner thoughts because they were repetitive and made him sound impotent more often than not.
There ARE a few things about this book that I did really enjoy.
I love how Karys is so clearly neurodivergent. It's not exactly clear what she may have (they obviously don't have the same words for things in this world as we do in our real one), whether it's OCD or some form of autism or something else, the way she thinks and analyzes things and has to step over thresholds with her left foot first--these are little quirks and character traits that make her unique--but they also play into making her who she is and giving her purpose at the end of the day. Her unique perspective of the world around her is a fundamental aspect of her becoming what she becomes. I really, REALLY enjoy that.
This is such a good example of grief and transformation. Karys, after discovering her sister is alive at the end of book one, has to go on in this book to confront what it means that they now stand diametrically opposed to one another.
The anguish she experiences, the confusion and feelings of being unmoored are palpable in the early parts of this book. Karys is struggling to come to terms with her new divinity. She's struggling to master her powers all while trying to figure out how to prevent a war. She's got a LOT on her plate, and Gaither is an expert at showing a young woman struggling to stay afloat under the weight of a dire situation, new changes in her life, and revelations that are equal parts relief and devastation.
Gaither's writing itself is beautiful. Even if it sometimes causes the story's pace to slow to a crawl, I don't think anyone would disagree that the writing itself isn't masterful.
So I don't know. I wish things had ended differently; a strong ending would have allowed me to forgive some of the other issues I had with the earlier parts of this book. I'm giving this 3 stars, because of the good stuff, even though it sort of hurts to do so.
First off thank you SM and her PA for sending me this ARC! Flame and Sparrow was one of my favorite reads this year and I was so excited to read this sequel! I am truly honored to be given this copy early! 🤗
I’d like to give this book a 4.5 ⭐️!
Let’s start with how incredible and descriptive this world building is. I can completely envision what’s written and the beauty in my own head had me in awe. This duology is some of the best writing I’ve ever read and so many times I reread sentences and thought “wow how does one come up with something like this.” Truly one of a kind writing!
The unique magic system was so fun and intriguing throughout the book and I haven’t read anything like it! The characters banter were great and the love story between Dravyn and Karys has me tearing up towards the end. Their evolution is top tier romance to be read. The trust and honesty between these two characters is unmatched and seriously warmed my heart… maybe it was the magic rubbing off on me😂 also moth, I love him so much and the way dravyn spoke of him had me cracking up. I think everyone needs a moth in their life!!
Some things I wish I had while reading but did not take away from the story nonetheless: I’m a firm believer that for fantasy novels, descriptive maps or glossaries are worth it. I wish we had a a vivid map of the mortal realm specifically to help me see how far or close each territory or city was. Not that this was an issue but I’m definitely a visual learner and like to be able to envision or see where the characters are going. I think at times too I was getting confused over places or terms but that could have been me forgetting what was stated in flame and sparrow as I read that I few months ago.
My last thought is I feel as though the ending was a bit rushed. I honestly expected the book to be longer but maybe I just want more more more because I loved this duology so much. Once I hit 95% I was like “there’s no way we’re almost done here” I literally wanted to read more and want to know how the story for Karys continues!
Overall: if you haven’t read this duology: what are you even reading? Because this is one of my favorite books I’ve ever read and deserves to be read by all fantasy readers!
Lastly, some of my favorite quotes: 🥹
“Looking at him was like opening tired eyes to a brilliant sunrise - my breath caught at the sight every time”
“You are the only being in any realm that I’m willing to kneel before”
“I would have burned down a thousand worlds to find my way back to you”
“To see all sides of things is a rare gift”
“There is no limit to what I would give you, what I would burn down to get to you. What I would build with you, forge for you. Wherever you go, whatever you become, I love you.”
✨𝓐𝓡𝓒 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 ✨ 📖: Ash and Feather (Flame and Sparrow Duology Book 2) 🔥 Out now & available in KU
In the aftermath of the events in the first book, Karys works to find her place under her new circumstances. The unpredictable magic and impending war sends Karys and her allies searching for answers with the hope of preventing devastating loss. They turn to significant people from their pasts for help and Karys must learn to trust herself and determine her loyalties.
Tropes: 👀 Dual POV 🗡️ Feisty FMC 🔥 Fire Daddy MMC 💫 Magical training 🪶 Adorable sidekick 🧑🧑🧒🧒 Found family 🏰 Intrigue ☄️ Burn the world for her 🌶️: Moderate
I loved being back in this world with our beloved MCs and of course Moth! Throughout the series, we see the polarizing views of the rebels becoming more destructive. Greed for power overshadows the cause for the overall good. Will the mortals and elves ever hope to achieve peace and find balance?
The unbridled passion between Karys and Dravyn is palpable. What begins as a flickering flame evolves into a blazing love that can burn through worlds. Through their understanding and devotion to each other, they’re able to pull each other back from the brink of darkness. Dravyn’s faith in Karys strengthens her resolve to save herself and others by fighting to forge her own path.
Ash and Feather paints a vivid world of conflict, renewal, rebirth, and hope. The Flame and Sparrow duology is a stunning and emotional love story that echoes across time.
Huge thanks to the author for this ARC opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review.
MY KINGDOM FOR ONE (1) GLASSBLOWING FIRE GOD TELLING ME TO GET ON MY HANDS AND KNEES.
this is book two of a duology! check out my review for book one here.
y’all, this man!!!! this book!!!!! this duology!!!!! is SO GOOD! SM gaither is the queen of god tier fantasy romance that doesn’t skimp on either fantasy or romance. there’s something here for everybody — meddling gods, kingdoms at war, elves, magic, complex political history, complicated family dynamics that add depth and emotional punch to the story — and then some cute, whimsical pets that bring back some levity.
the story in this installment picks up exactly where we left off in flame and sparrow — karys in a new, confusing position, dravyn (WE GET HIS POVs!!!!) trying to be the Supportive Boyfriend (at which he slays, by the way. no complaints. men, take notes), and a world on the cusp of out-and-out war that threatens the destruction of all that our characters hold most dear. it’s complicated, it’s stressful, and it’s unputdownable, feeding us from start to finish with fast-paced plot, twists and turns, heartachingly sweet romance, and a hefty dash of spice to make things really burn.
i unequivocally loved this, and the epilogue is truly the emotional cherry on top. if you’re a fan of fantasy romance, and love fully developed and complicated worldbuilding, run to kindle unlimited. this will feed you mind, body, and soul.
thank you to SM gaither and her assistant for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this one!
Thank you so much S. M. Gaither for sending me this ARC!
Ash & Feather is the second book in a Fantasy Romance duology and while I loved the first book this one simply swept me away, I just finished reading and still have tears in my eyes at how perfect this ending was and I don’t want to say goodbye to Karys and Dravyn, I love their story and can’t wait for this author’s next books.
Ash & Feather begins right where Flame & Sparrow ended and I was immediately drawn again into this fascinating world the author created. The world building and magic system were so unique and interesting and I’m so happy we got to explore more of it. The plot was perfectly paced with so much action because the stakes were even higher here but also all the amazing scenes between my favorite characters and of course Karys and Dravyn. It was incredible to see how much Karys has grown from the beginning of her story and how much she continued to grow in this book, she became truly confident and badass and I loved her as the FMC. Dravyn… I love him so much, he is the perfect MMC with how much he loved and supported Karys, their relationship was so beautiful and I loved all their scenes together, they became a true power couple here and I already miss them and hope we will get to see them again soon, they are one of my favorite bookish couples.
Ash & Feather is the perfect conclusion to this incredible duology, I loved every single page and already know I will reread Karys and Dravyn’s story many times because I can’t say goodbye to these two. I definitely recommend this duology to everyone and can’t wait for more books from S. M. Gaither.
I’m at a loss for words at how things ended…it’s not enough, I need more! 😭
After reading the first book last year, I have finally returned to this amazing world of gods, elves, and humans by the talented S.M. Gaither. Thank you so much, Rachel, for gifting me with the eARC of Ash & Feather! ❤️ It’s been a dream come true for me to be a part of the team.
I like the way the book started; it wasn’t hard to follow even though it’s been quite some time since I finished Flame & Sparrow and admittedly, I do not remember that much about this world. The fast pace instantly hooked me; I was on the edge of my seat as I kept scrolling through the chapters. I didn’t know what was going to happen—the stakes are so high in this one that I find myself crossing my fingers for things not to go too badly for everyone involved.
Ash & Feather feels more like a story about Karys and how she learned to accept herself fully, and how she eventually acknowledged all changes happening to her and to her world. If the first book focused too much on her kind’s anger towards the gods, this book is character-driven and it did not disappoint. She’s so brave and I love how she still showed her vulnerabilities and did not shy away from it. Dravyn’s journey, on the other hand, is also commendable. I know how hard it is to revisit unresolved issues in your past but still, he swallowed his pride and faced it like a champ. It only made me fall for him more; once again, I’m so happy he got the chance to meet Karys and to keep her in his life. The two of them are truly meant for each other and this book is proof enough of this fact.
The side characters are also amazing! I love the found family in this book, especially with Mairu and Valas always staying with Karys and being so supportive too. And of course, Savna. I also felt betrayed at first, but I came to understand her as someone who will also do everything for my little sister. Her love for Karys was strong enough to open her eyes against Andrel’s propaganda, and I am immensely satisfied of how she stepped up to fight him in the end.
The only thing I didn’t like is the way this book ended. It felt lackluster for me—the final battle was intense that I was in disbelief when everything suddenly gets fixed just like that. I was also a bit confused as to what became of Karys’s fate. I wish we were given more explanation for that. And the last part where Karys just flew away? I wished it didn’t end there. It would have been better if we were given a scene where they’re all back in the palace, chilling and finally at peace while Savna leads the elves and starts peace negotiations with Fallon.
Either way, I’m glad I wasn’t disappointed by the end of this duology. I’m happy that I chose to pick up Flame & Sparrow last year, leading me to this fantastic book. I can’t wait to finally read the Shadows & Crowns series!
Final rating: 4.5/5 stars

Look - I am just going to level with you. If the FMC has dark hair and can burn the world down, I will love her. It’s just facts. I don’t make the rules.
Dravyn is beautiful and single handedly redeeming blonde men. He would burn the world for her, I would burn the world for him, we are all burning together *screams that Chris Grey song at the top of my lungs.
Moth is a sweet baby angel. Zell is just that Ponyta and I am okay with that.
This book picks up right where we left off but I can honestly say I did not see the story arc coming. It was actually refreshing to be surprised by a book for once.
There were some parts of this book where I wanted things to speed up and then other moments where I wanted to dwell more. This author has a way of create such deep lore that it is so easy to get swept up in the world.
The love story was giving “to be loved to be known” and that is one of my favourite things to read at the moment.
I got an ARC for this book so I’ll give you my honest review!
This book was pretty good, but just not great (for me). I found it pretty boring up until 50%. The plans always seemed half-assed with not a lot of reasoning.
I did like the romance and smut! And Dravyn was swooooony. But I dunno, this book took me days and days to read when I usually devour a book in a day and a half. I found myself bored and looking at my phone a lot. At one point I actually started re reading a different book because I got bored and side tracked!
So in conclusion: this book wasn’t for me but also I wanted to mention that the author has beautiful descriptions and prose 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Disappointed. The writing got in the way of the story, and it felt like an early draft. I was lost as to where things were in the different worlds and it seemed the author was lost too--in both setting and plot. Sigh....I loved the first book, but the sequel made me not care for the characters and the story.
I have been beyond lucky to be a beta reader for SM Gaither but just finished my read through of the arc and bonus epilogue.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️.5
Karys and Dravyn are everything. They are both so strong and supportive on their own and together. I love that Dravyn is a soft place to land for Karys but she can absolutely stand on her own.
The conclusion of this duology is action packed. SM Gaither always is able to build a complex fantasy world that also includes the most incredible romance. I don’t want to give anything away but I really love how this story explores love, sacrifice, and how life isn’t as simple as choosing sides.
“Wildfire…we are made of something stronger than glass.”
Ash and Feather is the second and final instalment in the adult fantasy duology, Flame and Sparrow. This novel follows Karys and Dravyn as they are confronted with the consequences of the events of book one as they seek to stop the looming war between humanity and the elves...but can they face their pasts to protect the future just out of reach?
This book went places I did not expect and I had a blast!
Karys really went through some big changes here that have her questioning who she is after the events of book one. She is determined and so strong as she must navigate through family struggles, new identity, and what she is willing to do for the betterment of the world. She may have moments of weakness or fall down but she never lets it stop her. She rocks this show from start to finish.
Now Dravyn just got to me romantically. His love for Karys cannot be questioned and I felt his POV highlighted how much he wants to be a support. His focus on figuring out things among the gods really helped open the world up. He is equally fierce and will do whatever he needs to protect Karys...but he will not stop her, which I felt was excellent for his character growth.
Also, Moth is still MVP. I don't make the rules.
This book does contain spice. I would place it at around a 2.5 spicy pepper out of 5 spicy pepper. Spice is spread quite evenly throughout the story and we start to see it around the 20% but this is an established couple so it is expected. I felt the spice really grew in intensity as these characters found themselves and felt love for who they are. It was detailed, passionate, and explicit. I would say at least 3 spicy moments with intimacy and care throughout the story. This is the balance of spice and romance I love.
“I would have burned down a thousand worlds to find my way back to you.”
The story grips you immediately upon starting - I really recommend rereading or refreshing yourself because it picks right back up. I felt the storyline was clear and easy to follow with Karys and Dravyn having these great story arcs that pushed them to action and really evolved their character. We further explore the world and lore which I felt added to the intensity of the choices that must be made. Side characters get a chance to shine as well which helps open journeys up. Even with all the action and journeys there is still time for the slices of life I adore (Moth included) with training and learning. The final 10% has you in pins and needles with a final end that is sweet but brief.
Overall this was an epic conclusion to this series where the title of this book was integrating with perfection into the story. I am sad to see this story over but hope we can return to this work.
“She was fire and fierceness, my brightness and breath. She was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.”
✨Ash and Feather completes this duology and it was so bittersweet. I will hold onto these characters. We get immersed into the story right where Flame and Sparrow left off. Ash and Feather dives into politics more and has twists, betrayal, and battles. My favorite thing with this duology is the found family trope. I became attached to each character. Maybe that’s why it was so hard to finish it.
✨I was immediately reminded why I am obsessed with Dravyn. He is a morally grey character and will do anything for Karys. Any time he opened his mouth I was swooning. While others know him for having his walls up and his dark past, he has a different side only for Karys. I loved that we got several chapters from his pov.
“There is no limit to what I would give you, what I would burn down to get to you. What I would build with you, forge for you. Wherever you go, whatever you become, I love you.”
✨ Karys showed the most growth in this book, and I loved watching her grow into her powers. She is finding herself through her past and present. I loved that she showed us that it’s okay to be fragile and strong at the same time.
“Looking at him was like opening tired eyes to a brilliant sunrise - my breath caught at the sight every time”
The romance between them is a favorite for me. They’re drawn to each other and able to find each other even among the chaos. It was so special how deeply they knew each other. I have a feeling I will be rereading them often.
Ash and Feather has: 🔥 Romantasy 🪽 Animal companions ❤️🔥 Dual pov ⚔️ Found family 👑 Cute nickname ✨ Touch her and ☠️
I highly recommend this duology, and it releases today!
Thank you @authorsmgaither for giving me this ARC! 🫶🏼
Here in Ash and Feather, we get to return to our burnt cinammon roll god of Fire and Karys as we face an upcoming war between the elves, humans, and gods. We literally begin where we left off from Flame and Sparrow, jumping right back into the chaos and accompanied by our most favorite found family, Valas and Mai. And of course, we can’t forget Moth sand Zell!
In this sequel, we get to dive deep, deep, deep into the back stories and trauma of Dravyn and Karys as they try to figure out the fates the higher gods have for them and their realm. The scars are deep but the emotion, transparency, trust, vulnerability, and realism in their feelings is so raw and touching that you relate to it so well. They each struggle not only with their past but with who they used to be to who they’re becoming as well as their powers. This book felt much more focused on healing versus just fast moving action and, as someone who loves that, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
But do not fear! The plot is still COOKING! We had hidden identities revealed, resurrected lives, plot twists, and the most villainous of villains. Truly, I despise him SO SO SO MUCH.
Tropes you may find in Ash and Feather are OCD, triggers and mental health rep, unique bond, found family, adorable pets, burnt cinnamon roll fire daddy, self-acceptance, multiple races (different levels of gods, humans, and elves), deeper magic and world building, plot twists, hidden identities, established relationship, touch her and burn, and delightfully well written spice 3/5.
This duet is complete July 27 and I think you’ll love it! Thank you for this gifted arc, @authorsmgaither. I am so humbled to be a part of your team.
This is the second book of the Flame and Sparrow duology and part of the Court of the Marr series. Tropes include fire daddy, touch her and die, found family, he’d burn the world for her, burnt cinnamon roll God and cute mythical creatures. This is a darker fantasy romance so please review the content warnings.
The Lovely: I loved the characters (main and side) and their relationships. My favorite side character is still Valas - he’s funny but caring and protective too. The relationship between the main characters is beautiful and emotional, and their banter made me smile on more than one occasion. They seem so connected and wanting to care for each other.
The Mundane: I honestly struggled with the ending. It felt quite abrupt given the build up and I was expecting more. There also wasn’t great clarity about Karys’s future or her relationship with the MMC. I was thinking there would be a final chapter between the two of them but really it was just a page or two and their status was ambiguous. There was a bonus epilogue dropped by the author that will go in the final book, which I did read, but it didn’t really provide that closing I was expecting between the main characters.
Rating: 4/5 Stars 3/5 Flames
Recommendation: I received an advance review copy, and am leaving this review voluntarily. Despite my struggle with the ending I really enjoyed the duology as a whole. I loved the journey Karys went on over the course of the books and her relationship with the MMC changed over time. The plot line was just busy enough to be engaging but not overwhelming. If you like fantasy romance with Gods, elves, humans and cute magical creatures, you might like this duology.
Thank you to the author SM Gaither for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!
I am literally SPEACHLESS, and that doesn’t happen often! This book was everything and MORE than I expected and hoped it would be! It was beyond magical! So well written and takes you on a crazy rollercoaster ride of emotions until the very end! I am so sad this duology is complete but it will be one I read over and over! Literally my Roman Empire!
I loved watching Karys grow into her powers and realizing her true worth and purpose. Watching her grow and change into this confident Devine being as the story progressed, no longer reliant on Dravyn’s powers or approvel, finally able to stand next to him as an equal as it was always meant to be after her accession. The whole thing was just so spectacularly done. And through this discovery her relationship with Dravyn is strengthened…and we all know Dravyn is my #1 book boyfriend of all time 🔥🔥
The element of found family is huge in Ash & Feather too, I don’t want to say much because it would spoil a lot of plot but just know many fractured relationships are on the mend, and after the rollercoaster ride this duology was it is the best ending ever!
I will add more after my brain processes a bit, it’s still reeling, but I will never ever get enough of this series!

This book was everything that I wanted in a follow up to the phenomenal book, Flame And Sparrow. The sheer amount of storylines and conflict that Gaither set up and ultimately resolved was truly impressive. The characters themselves also continue to be a strong selling point for Gaither’s writing. The found family amongst Dravyn, Valas, Mairu, and Karys was truly something special. They had an innate ability to understand what someone in their group needed. Also, I can’t forget about Moth – he continues to be an absolute delight, and I would love to take him home and snuggle him. I really appreciated that Gaither continued to grow the relationship between Dravyn and Karys. While they clearly care for one another, they continued to experience challenges while learning to trust and share their struggles. I also love that we got to see more of Gaither’s world building skills. The writing is so vivid you can clearly picture the scenes the characters are experiencing. I also felt that the plot was well paced and well balanced between more of internal/emotional struggles vs the action-packed battles. There were also plenty of heart wrenching betrayals and plot twists to keep you guessing. I was fascinated by how the final battle played out and where all of the characters ended up following their journey. Overall, I loved this book and duology as whole. I can’t recommend Gaither’s writing enough. ✨ ✨ eARC courtesy of the author
