I don't know what the author was thinking with this one, it took everything I had to finish it and it took me an entire week to do so. I thought I was getting a magical family mystery and what I got was an utter mess. This is my first read by the author and I was so disappointed because this has such a high rating (4.28) after eighty-seven reviews.

The first thing I want to mention is the stupid idea to name two characters Matt and have another character with two different names. There are also two timelines and the two-name character shows up in both. Also, we get to read a diary from one character and letters from another.

The two lead characters fall googly eyes in love and spill their saccharine guts to each other before even meeting. The guy has some substance issues but the girl just loves him sooooo much he can stay with her and even be in her house alone cause she trusts him. I mean what the actual fuck!? Anyone with any sense would steer clear of someone with addiction issues romanticly. I have no judgement of people with substance abuse problems (I love relatives who are addicts) but I do have issues with anyone getting into a romantic relationship with them when they need to be focusing on getting clean and sober.

There were some hallucinogens being used and lots of drinking and smoking weed over a weekend and the guy had visions...or are they? It was so stupid and not needed for the plot at all. The story was very repetitive with the same things happening over and over again. Matt gets drunk/high and puts off seeing his grandmother and finding a new care home for her to reside, for three days straight. Ruby works/volunteers and visits her grandmother while putting off looking for a new, more affordable care home for her. Good thing both grannies die because these asshole grandchildren couldn't be bothered to get off their asses to find a new place for their grandmother to live.

Everyone is sleeping with everyone in this book. Now I am no prude...sexy time is okay with me in books...but not only is everyone sexy-timing with everybody they're also getting pregnant but not by the person they're married to or in a relationship with. It's a good thing there is no such thing as sexually transmitted diseases, am I right? And oh ya, they don't tell the baby daddy he's the father. They lie about it and tell their partner he's the father.

This was just terrible for many reasons and I really wish I could get the time back that I spent reading it. Dear whoever wrote the blurb for this book: An achingly romantic novel this is not.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the Advance Readers Copy...I think.

Join Matt Gatlin on his journey in Find Me in California as he unravels the mystery behind his grandmother Liza's belongings appearing on his doorstep. Meanwhile, in California, Julia Hope is struggling to come to terms with her grandmother's deteriorating health and being alone.

We follow Matt and Julia and their intersecting lives. On his six-day road trip to California, Matt uncovers shocking truths about the complicated relationship with his grandmother and discovers secrets about Liza that were previously unknown to him. Julia exposes these secrets via a long-lost diary. As truths come to light, we learn how both their grandmothers who end up at the same nursing home are connected and what that means for them both.

Reading Find Me in California was a very unique reading experience. I loved the friendship that blossomed between Magnolia Blu and Liza. There's a component of magical realism that had me wondering where things were taking me. I also enjoyed the dual timeline and the multiple perspectives, which helped to give more depth to our characters.

My only gripe was wanting a more detailed exchange between Magnolia Blu and Liza instead of snippets of letters and journal entries. I guess that was part of the intrigue. I liked the character development and growth between Matt and Julia and how their stories evolved and wrapped up.

Find Me in California is a pleasurable read about how history affects our present, the value of forgiveness, and how often traumas affect us into adulthood.

Tropes:
Magical Realism
Time Travel
Chance Meetings
Shocking Truths
Familial Ties
Dual Timeline
Multiple POV

I had previously read Everything We Left Behind by Kerry Londsale and enjoyed it, so I was happy to delve into another of her books. I'm glad I did.

Description:
Raised by her fiercely passionate and free-spirited grandmother, Julia Hope has never gone without love. But as she tends to her only living relative during her final days, Julia struggles to overcome her fear of being alone.

A thousand miles away, Matt Gatlin has managed to avoid the coldhearted grandmother with whom he once lived. But after twelve years of her being blessedly out of sight, she needs him. His resentments still raw, Matt packs up his car and reluctantly heads to California to confront a bitter past he thought was long gone.

Over the next six days, Julia’s and Matt’s fates intersect. An old diary exposes the tragedy of a long-lost love. A history of secrets in two families comes to light. And on a lonely back road, Matt picks up an unusual yet captivating hitchhiker with a secret of her own.

For Julia and Matt, something heartbreaking and heartwarming, mysterious and beautiful, will touch their lives—with neither of them realizing that maybe they’re destined for each other.

My Thoughts:
There are really four separte stories in this book, Matt's, Julia's, Liza's and Ruby Rose's, and yet they are all woven together in a satisfying way. I was totally engrossed in this book. Each has a tragic feel at some point. I loved Julia's and Matt's stories best. The estrangement in families is prevalent in the book, as well as unresolved grief. Secrets and lies that drove family apart. The story is told with a lot of heart. I recommend to anyone who likes stories about relationships.

I have been a fan of Kerry Lonsdale's writing, ever since I picked up Everything We Keep in 2016. Her latest novel, Find Me in California, has a different feel from her previous novels, but it is incredibly engaging and hard to put down.

The story goes back and forth between the past and the present. The past is told via a diary that Julia learns about for the first time. It explains the animosity between Julia and Matt's grandmothers, but is dished out in a way that makes you wait for a big reveal. They were friends in the beginning! I was in suspense and just had to know what really happened with Matt and Julia's grandmothers! Matt and Julia were lost souls and my heart went out to both of them.

In the present, we learn a lot about Matt and Julia and what shaped them from adolescence into adulthood. They both had hard lives that were connected to their mothers in some way. Little did they initially know about their grandmothers having a connection in the past. Their conversations were really interesting and revealing, and my heart ached for both of them.

I don't want to say too much more as to not spoil things. While I was able to guess at something, there were still many surprises in store. I felt like I was expecting more to come from Matt's connection with the hitchhiker, but it was still a satisfying story no matter what.

Pick this one up on June 11th for a thoughtful and immersive summer read!

(Trigger warnings at the bottom of the post.)

Movie casting suggestions:
Julia: Haley Lu Richardson
Matt: Nick Robinson
Magnolia (past): Kerri Medders
Liza (past): Alexia Fast
Matty (past): Chase Stokes

I have previously read Everything We Left Behind, but this same author. I was very happy to receive this kindle book as a Goodreads giveaway promotion from Amazon.
This is a very different book from her previous one.
This book takes us on a journey of Matt Gatlin. He has had much tragedy in his childhood . He has lost both his parents and lived with his cold hearted grandmother until he was eighteen years of age. Matt never knew why his grandmother didn’t give him the love he needed so much. But now his grandmother Liza needs him.She is living in an assisted living facility in California and is running out of money. He must make a trip to California but he really doesn’t want to go.
Meanwhile in California Julia is dealing with her grandmother’s ailing health in the same assisted living facility.
Julia finds a diary that her grandmother Ruby Rose wrote revealing secrets that Julia never knew.
Julia and Matt’s lives become intertwined as Ruby Rose’s diary and letters are read.
There are four separate story lines in this book. Matt, Julia, Liza and Ruby Rose that are woven together.
This book is full of magical realism. There is something for everyone who likes mystery, family drama and romance.
An enjoyable read.

This was the first title I read from author Kerry Lonsdale. After reading this book, which I received in advance thanks to NetGalley, the author, and Lake Union Publishing, I’ll certainly seek out other books from Kerry Lonsdale.

Find Me in California is an easy read, perfect for consuming over summer or vacations. The writing is engaging and the pacing is even throughout.

I typically enjoy mysteries, but I found myself drawn to this novel. Many things in the story line (like the boxes) piqued my interest and kept me involved in the story. I really enjoyed this novel, and I recommend giving it a read.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

Expected publication date: June 11, 2024

Julia Hope was raised by her grandmother after being abandoned by her drug addicted mother as a child. Surrounded by nothing but love, Julia is heartbroken as she watches her grandmother struggle with Alzheimer’s and starts to think about a future completely alone.

Matt Gatlin is a famous auto photographer living in New Mexico when he receives word from the retirement residence his grandmother is living in that she is short on payments and is about to be evicted. Matt and his cold-hearted grandmother were never close, and he doesn’t feel like he should have to travel one thousand miles to deal with his grandmother, who never wanted him in the first place.

Both Matt and Julia’s lives intersect over their complicated family relationships and the understanding of being completely alone in this heartwarming emotional story, “Find Me in California” by Kerry Lonsdale.

“California” is Lonsdale’s tenth novel, and I have been a fan since her very first, and was over the moon when I was asked to be a member of her reviewing team. Lonsdale takes deep, emotional topics like Alzheimer’s, elder care and childhood abandonment and manages to turn them into an engaging and entertaining read. “California” is both light-hearted and poignant, which is what Lonsdale is famous for, and it takes a special kind of talent to forge these into a page-turning novel.

Julia and Matt are the same and yet so very different, but both have suffered significant loss and trauma, making them human and relatable. It was obvious from the beginning that they would end up together, but I was invested in every part of their journey. Both characters take turns narrating, so the reader is able to understand both protagonists from their point of view, which adds depth and strengthens character development. The ending plays out as I hoped it would, but there were some delicious twists and turns along the way, and I turned the pages at a record pace!

“California” is the summer read of 2024, and I can’t wait to see what Lonsdale delivers next!

My seventh ‘Kerry Lonsdale’ book but my first standalone!

I love Lonsdale’s balance of mystery, suspense and love and her authentic characters and unique plots.

As the story opens we meet Matt Holloway who pulls into his driveway in his Porsche to discover 15 boxes of his grandmother’s belongings piled up. He’s not close to her so he is puzzled as to why Liza Hollway, his 83-year-old grandma, has had her personal items sent to him.

Then we head over to the Rosemont Assisted Living and Memory Care Facility where we meet massage therapist, Julia Hope who has taken a job here to supplement her grandmother’s, Mama Rose, monthly fee. She’s stressed out because new owners won’t recognize the agreement she’d made with the current owners and Mama Rose will have to move out.

Matt and Julia’s stories intersect and Lonsdale has surprises for us as we learn more about their grandmothers’ history!

You’ll love:
✔️Lost diary and what it reveals
✔️how the author examines love, loss, grief, betrayal, forgiveness, trust
✔️the unveiling of family secrets
✔️the family dynamics; reluctant guardian, childless career-focussed couple, death of parents…
✔️a focus on the damage and care for Alzheimers
✔️a glimpse of Old Hollywood
✔️the unravelling of the ripple effects of choices
✔️Multigenerational interactions

This is a story of two broken souls, neither of whom have had a loving childhood and both sent to be raised by grandmothers. When their journeys intersect at a memory care facility, it’s as if time stops and is waiting for them to catch up and see how they were made for each other. I love that moment in the book when the title makes sense. I enjoyed Lonsdale’s exploration of how the roots of the past are intertwined with those of our present and future.

Trippy at times, this is an engaging read - one that will remind you to touch base with your elderly parents or grandparents!

I was gifted this copy by Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

A story told in dual timelines involving two grandchildren (Matt & Julia) that were raised by their grandmothers (Liza & Mama Rose) who live in the same nursing home. The two older women have a history together with secrets, from many years ago, resulting in an animosity between them.
This allows for Matt and Julia's fates to intersect resulting in an undeniable connection.
It took me awhile to connect to this story as I found it confusing at times.
While not my favourite book by Kerry Lonsdale overall it's an enjoyable read.

Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an arc of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

This is only the second book that I have read by Kerry Lonsdale and I am so happy she reached out to me to receive an arc if her latest release.

Find Me in California is a magical book about friendship, mistakes, and words left unsaid. It's about forgiveness, kindness, loving others and most importantly loving ourselves.

This is an emotionally moving story told in multi POV and multiple timelines. It's a special book that I hope I never forget.

I adore Lonsdale's books and this one is terrific! It begins with Matt finding 15 boxes of his grandmother's things in his driveway and he's confused as she's in a care home and they haven't been close. In the same care home, Julia is a massage therapist and her grandmother is being evicted as new owners are taking over and she can no longer afford it. Of course Matt and Julia don't know each other...yet! It's a wonderfully convoluted story of hidden secrets, lost diaries, fantasies, and familial love and loss! It often feels "other-worldly" but it's an awesome story that will warm your heart!

Don’t Live Your Life with Regrets. That’s the message of this book told by Kerry Lonsdale. I am a huge fan of Kerry and so excited to get this early advance copy of her newest book “Find Me in California “. With that being said, I had a hard time following the story and just found myself “lost” several times. For that reason, only 3 stars from me. Looking forward to her next book.

Loved this novel! I could relate being from California myself…I was interested! Author Kerry Lonsdale had great character development and I felt like I know these characters well. Matt and Julia, 2 people from different places but on a road essentially to the same place. Both have grandmothers in the same assisted living with stories to tell, secrets to keep and a friendship tested by fate.

What did I like: I liked that I could relate to this novel in the respect that i too recently had my mother in an assisted living and lost her to a stroke. It’s a challenge to make that decision to place your loved one in assisted living and to see them deteriorate and decline. I cried when I read about some of the scenarios that took place between Mama Rose and Julia, her granddaughter.

Favorite character: Julia! Kind , giving, compassionate and determined.

Why should you read this novel: This novel makes you appreciate forgiveness and the life that’s right in front of you. This novel has love, suspense, surprises and family dynamics. It’s about choices and opportunities we make while living our own lives.

A road trip …a hitchhiker…a masseuse, a gardener and Hollywood actor to name a few of the characters in this entertaining novel. A page turner, especially near the end. Thanks you Kerry Lonsdale for this amazing and entertaining read!

This would be the perfect read for someone who wants a little bit of everything because this has romance, some mystery, family drama, secrets and a dash of magic. Both Julia and Matt are complex characters with complicated pasts and the author did an excellent job at weaving their narratives together. The story itself is quite intricate as besides Julia and Matt both of their grandmothers stories are told over the course of the book. The familial relationships here are so heartbreaking and there are so many subjects explored here from dementia to drug abuse to abandonment issues and many more. It’s also about second chances and forgiveness and it’s highly emotional for both Julia and Matt. I always say the authors books are a perfect summer escape and this was no exception, it’s fresh and unique. The audio version is narrated solely by Amanda Leigh Cobb and she’s delightful. I’ve listened to her before but it’s been awhile and she has a very engaging style.

I’m a big Kerry Lonsdale fan. For me, she’s one of my “must-read” authors, who always delivers an enjoyable mix of mystery, romance, and suspense.

“Find me in California” brings together two women in a California care facility and their relatives, delving into important themes around love, loss, addiction, with a backstory of Hollywood royalty and the question of how long, and how far will you go to hold a grudge?

The current timeline story brings together Julia Hope, who adores her grandmother Rub Rose Hope who created and then let go of a successful landscaping business. Matt Gaitlin is a photographer who holds a grudge against his Hollywood king-maker of a grandmother, Elizabeth Holloway, who adopted him after his parents’ death, but never loved him. He doesn't want to waste his time traveling to California to assist wither her running out of money to pay for her care.

As Julia and Matt interact, both trying to meet their own goals, we discover the mystery behind their grandmothers’ stories – which delves into old time Hollywood and reveals many secrets. Secrets the two grandmothers have kept not only from Julia and Matt— but from each other.

An original, refreshing romance, bound up with a mystery, that kept me engaged right through the twists toward the end. A fast-paced, romantic read with a truly original plot. Highly recommend!

I've always been such a fan of Kerry Lonsdale's books!!

I was so honored that Kerry sent me a finished signed copy <3.

What a beautiful story of loss, family, second chances, grief, and romance. What I always have loved about Kerry's books is her writing. I absolutely loved the grandmothers. The diary entries from Julia's grandmother were so eye opening and real.

Find me in California is something very different then what we've seen from Lonsdale. A unique and fresh perspective on challenging issues with family and the strength of healing.

I definitely recommend reading Kerry's books if you haven't!!

I love Kerry Lonsdale and her books, so I was extremely excited going into Find Me in California. The gorgeous cover caught my attention immediately and I still can't look at the title without thinking of the song Gone to California by P!nk. The secrets revealed through the various viewpoints in the book were shocking, and I couldn't believe how wild this story actually was. I normally love magical realism which this book has a dash of, but it wasn't an element I loved here due to it feeling weird and awkward to me. Other than that, I couldn't get enough of this complex plot, and I was especially engrossed in Magnolia Blu's dairy POV.

Amanda Leigh Cobb narrates the audiobook and I thought she did a lovely job, especially when it came to differentiating her voice between Julia and Magnolia Blu in the dairy. I would have liked to see a male narrator for Matt's POV for a bit more diversity, but I absolutely enjoyed the audio overall and would recommend it. There is a little bit of everything in Find Me in California when it comes to themes and genres, and it would make an excellent beach read! Heartbreaking secrets and tragedy got me in my emotions, and Lonsdale created a touching romance and family story with a trace of humor to take the edge off.

Thank you to the publishers and author for my complimentary listening and reader copies of this book. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

Kerry Lonsdale, the author of “Find Me in California” has written a captivating and intriguing novel. The Genres for this novel are Family Life Fiction, Women’s Fiction, Domestic Fiction, Friendship and Fiction. In this well-written novel, the author vividly describes four characters with their own stories to tell, and weaves them into an emotional and memorable book. I appreciate how the author discusses important topics such as the importance of family, friendships, honesty, communication, forgiveness and second chances. The author also mentions the importance of self-worth, self-esteem, and taking an emotional journey to find oneself. Other important topics are dementia and Alzheimers, alcoholism, and drugs. I like the para-normal feel of certain situations in this novel.

Julia Hope and Matt Gatlin both have aging grandmothers in an assisted living home. Julia has always been loved by her grandmother, and Matt has been ignored by his grandmother. Both were brought up by their grandmothers. Currently both grandmothers are in the same assisted living residence, and seem to have secrets. Julia and Matt are not aware that both grandmothers knew each other. Julia is a volunteer at the facility and has sent Matt boxes from his grandmother. Matt has been contacted by the facility to come and take care of financial arrangements for his grandmother. Julia works at several jobs to help keep her grandmother at the facility. Matt leaves to go to California to take care of this, and has several detours on his way.

Julia finds an old diary that sheds light on many situations. I loved everything about this story and highly recommend this to other readers.

Find Me in California by Kerry Lonsdale. Thanks to the author for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Julia cares for her only living relative, even though she usually doesn’t remember her. Matt, a thousand miles away, has avoided his cold grandmother for a long time but now allows her back in his life. Julia and Matt’s present intersect with their past.

This one is going to be a hit because it’s got a lot of hot tickets: historical fiction with dual time lines, mysterious past friendship, budding romance, and a hint of magical realism. The latter can be a surprise, so if it’s not your thing, be aware. It’s not a major part of the story, but it surprised me for sure. I came to appreciate how it complimented the story as more was divulged.

“No wonder she’s drawn to me, another broken soul just looking to be loved.”

Find Me in California comes out 6/11.

Kerry Lonsdale is back with another heartfelt, romantic story about love, loss, and second chances. FIND ME IN CALIFORNIA is a wonderful novel that beautifully weaves the past and the present. This was a complex story dealing with family and lots of secrets. I will say that I was a bit confused for the first few chapters. Having two characters with basically the same name would do that. I wasn’t entirely happy with the Julia and Matt and their actions. I grew to like them as the story goes on. I think it’s another good book by this author.

I don’t know where to start to describe the genre of this book since it is steeped in romance, mystery and a little fantasy along the way, too. Matt Gatlin and Julia Hope are two sympathetic and relatable protagonists, both facing a difficult future after traumatic childhoods. Both were cast off by parents and raised by a grandmother. Julia’s grandmother, Mama Rose, was nurturing and kind, but there are secrets that Julia is discovering now that Mama Rose is dying and it would have been better for Julia if Mama Rose had been totally honest. Matt was raised by his grandmother, too, a Hollywood legend named Liza who was distant and cold to him, even leaving the room when he was present. His childhood was marked by rejection, first by his mother and then by his grandmother, so it is no wonder that he has a few problems with the present situation in which his grandmother is dying and requesting to see him. The way these two come together, via a nursing home where both grandmothers reside, is an original take on a meet-cute situation. Matt’s trip to get to his grandmother’s bedside is fraught with his own personality as he uses drugs along the way, hallucinates a relationship (maybe…not sure about what this really was but it was interesting) and finally arrives at the nursing home to actually meet Julia in person. The two have so much in common that it seems inevitable that they must become a couple, but that cannot happen until both of them deal with their pasts. I enjoyed the intricacies of this story, all of the background information about Liza, Mama Rose, Matt and Julia that were woven into the main story of a loss that was certain to come soon. This is a multi-layered, well-crafted story of relationships, secrets, forgiveness and finding hope in the most unlikely places. It is also a story of acceptance and love even in the middle of a messy life. The characters are deeply touching, unique and realistically flawed representatives of life. The complications in the plot are thought-provoking and I encourage readers to go through the discussion questions at the end of the book because they are a great way to reflect on the truths encountered within its pages. Insightful, captivating and magical, this book is a brilliant look at overcoming one’s past and facing a new future.

What I liked about Find Me in California:
I enjoyed how Kerry Lonsdale explored the intertwined histories and grief journeys of Mama Rose and Liza. Their history added a level of emotional depth and a stronger connection to the story. The exploration of each character's journey to finding peace was well-handled, and the diary entries, while not perfect, added an interesting layer to the narrative.

What I disliked about Find Me in California:
I had a hard time connecting with the main character and their story. The writing style felt different from Kerry's previous works, and the pacing was uneven, with some sections feeling underdeveloped or overly repetitive. The bizarre hallucination scenes involving Matt and Magnolia felt out of place and distracted from the overall narrative. With so much going on, the story felt overwhelming at times, and the love story at the end didn’t feel genuine, coming across more as a projection of collective grief.

What I think would have made Find Me in California better:
Personally, I believe Find Me in California would have been stronger if it had focused more on a single storyline rather than juggling multiple threads. This could have reduced distractions and allowed for a deeper connection with the characters. I felt that the diary entries read more like dialogue rather than authentic entries, and could have been written more believably. Additionally, the love story between Matt and Julia could have benefited from a more gradual development, which would have avoided the sense of instalove. It would have also created a more genuine connection between them. Additionally, I would have liked to see more resolution and further development of Julia's character after the central burden was lifted.

Would I recommend Find Me in California by Kerry Lonsdale:
As a fan of Kerry’s previous works, I’m hesitant to recommend Find Me in California. While the exploration of grief and the intertwined histories of Mama Rose and Liza had promise, the uneven pace, underdeveloped characters, and jarring narrative choices made it difficult to fully engage with the story. Fans of Kerry and those interested in themes of grief might still find it worth a read.

Julia works day and night at Rosemont Assistant Living. It’s also the place where her beloved grandma, Ruby Rose Hope, resides. With an ailing memory, her grandmother usually doesn’t recognize Julia. Still, she can’t bear the thought of moving her grandmother to a different facility as it was one of her only able minded requests and therefore, the least Julia can do to pay her back.

Julia “meets” Matt when he calls the home after his grandmother’s belongings had been dumped at his place unceremoniously. Not only does he not want her stuff, he doesn’t want her in his life, period-her presence nothing but cold towards him while in his youth. But a guilty conscience, and some coaxing from Julia, convinces Matt to make the trek to California to tie up loose ends.

Only on his way, Matt finds himself procrastinating the reunion, instead spending day after day in a drug and alcohol induced stupor. While inebriated he meets a mysterious hitchhiker named Magnolia Blu who he becomes enamored with. At the same time he maintains contact with Julia. But as he comes to his senses, he begins to question what is real and what is fabrication. Then Julia and Matt meet. Now only do sparks fly between these two lost souls, but the pasts of the women who shaped them begin to overlap as well, proving that Matt’s journey will have more than one important destination.

Find Me in California is an inventive romance from author, Kerry Lonsdale. A creative mix of historical fiction, mystery, and magic, the story keeps changing course, not unlike the trajectory of the characters themselves. A quick read, it keeps readers guessing and with a little luck, set them on a road trip rewind with worth taking.

This book was unlike any other I’ve read. I don’t typically read much magical realism. Maybe I just wasn’t reading the right magical realism books before, because I actually enjoyed this one. I was immediately sucked into the story because I was intrigued by how the story opens when Matt arrives at his home to tons of boxes containing his grandmother’s belongings.

I really liked how the MCs sort of started to get to know each other better through a series of phone calls discussing their mutual dilemma of rehoming (that sounds awful) their grandmothers. It was a bit instalovey which I usually don’t like but I didn’t mind in this one.

There were a lot of components to the story and lots of twists. The Magnolia Blu and Mama Rose names were a little distracting, I kept having to stop and remind myself of which name went with which person. I wish the characters had the 1 name each and that some characters didn’t share the same name. I think adding the secondary / duplicate names made it more confusing than it needed to be and at times overshadowed the coolness of the twists.

So while there were things I struggled with in this book, I actually did find it interesting and I liked that the characters were able to grow. I also think the way the grandmother’s stories concluded was nicely done.

I would absolutely read other work by this author as she created an atmosphere I could easily envision and enough mystery to keep the pages turning.

SUMMER READING REC

A huge thank you to @kerrylonsdale for sending me an ARC. 💕 And thanks to #partner @brilliancepublishing for the accompanying audiobook 🎧 #gifted

Find Me in California
Kerry Lonsdale

📖 "An achingly romantic novel about chance meetings, buried secrets, and the multiple facets of love and family bonds."

💭 Find Me in California ticks all the boxes, blending historical fiction, family drama, and mystery, with romance and a touch of magic. Lonsdale delivers a deeply emotional novel of love, loss, family, and forgiveness. This heartrending story perfectly balances the heavier themes with lighter ones. 💕 There are many moving parts here — multiple stories within the main story — but I found it easy to follow along.

🎧 I listened along with the audiobook, wonderfully narrated by Amanda Leigh Cobb. Her performance pulled me in from the first chapter! I highly recommend Find Me in California in whatever format works best for you. ☺️

I have read all of her books, and have always liked the story lines.
This book has a good story line but also a tortured one. I did not really like Matt for quite awhile into the book, as he didn't seem to be a very nice person. He and Julie become acquainted through their Grandmothers, who are both in the same Nursing home. Matt's Grandmother, Liza and Julia's Grandmother, Magnolia Blue, new each other for quite awhile but this was something not realized until Julia found her Grandmothers diary.
It is a complicated story with a lot of ups and downs, assumptions and many interesting story lines of all of the different characters in the book. It is written in two different times, one when the grandparents were younger and present day.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Lake Union Publishing for a copy of this book.

Julia and Matt are the main characters in Find Me In California by Kerry Lonsdale. They have never met, but their grandmothers are in the same nursing home together. Julia volunteers at the nursing home to help pay her grandmother‘s bill. When Matt’s grandmother, whom he is estranged from, is getting ready to be kicked out of the nursing home due to having no more money left, his and Julia’s lives intersect.
From there, the story takes off! In chapters with alternating narrators, we learn the back stories of the two grandmothers, and about the present lives of Matt and Julia. I love books that have multiple narrators and different time periods. I enjoyed learning more about the two grandmothers. I wish that we would have learned a lot more about Matt and Julia when they were younger. As always, the author has great characters and a great romance plot.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and Net Galley for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
