Brothers Hunter and Grayson are getting ready for their highly anticipated camping trip. Once arriving at Lake Marsh, home of the great Canadian Marshmallow Shark, the two brothers undergo puppet-life changing experiences. This is a book about puppets and sharks…or rather puppet sharks.
Author Cat Voleur introduces readers to the world of puppets and its surroundings that are narrated by Fisherman Fred. Puppet Shark is creatively comprised of smaller side stories, these include a couple of groovy hippies enjoying the seemingly calm water, Dr. Dental that helps solve an affliction of stinky shark breathe and a director/cinematographer determined to catch his opus film. (and let’s not forget The Ballad of Mac the Shark.) With an age appropriate PG13 rating, this book comes with trigger warnings that include puppet shark chomps and descriptive decapitations of the wood and foam kind.
Little clumsy puppet fingers, excited open-mouthed smiles and unusual speech patterns, Voleur’s puppet descriptions and dialog are hilarious. With a heavy dose of entertaining comedy mixed with foam-rubber and fleece-fabric horror, Cat’s art of storytelling is enough to give any reader the hibby-jibbies (cue the ominous music).
Grab your favorite reading pillow, blanket, portable drill and whoopi cushion cause it’s gonna be a morbidly fun marshmallow eating good time. This cautionary tail of terror by Cat Voleur is a A Horror Bookworm (what do shark puppets eat? finger foods) Recommendation.
I read this before I saw the movie and I enjoyed this a lot more! Very silly, but with a lot more interesting things going on in it than you would think for a novelization. If you saw the movie and liked it, definitely give this a read. You won't be disappointed!
