“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.”
This sweet redemption story featuring celebrity actor John Pomponio and his assistant makeup artist Adanne Stewart held my attention from cover to cover. I was transported back to Hope Springs, Alabama and captivated by a story featuring new beginnings.
I appreciated being reminded about the need to carry grace along with our boundaries, about holding mercy as tight as our need for justice, and about letting forgiveness keep the door open to what God has planned for us. Although I’ve heard it many, many times, I needed to hear again (this week especially) to engage in what makes my heart sing, to trust God with what I can’t control and to remember my first love (God).
Two quotes that I copied out because they stopped me in my tracks and gave me purpose to my day:
💜 “Remember to anchor.” 💜 “Instead of blasting the trailer with her grievances, she grappled for the fruit of self-control to tame her tongue.”
This new-to-me author spoke to my heart and I instantly put her on my auto-read list.
I was gifted this copy by Revell and was under no obligation to provide a review.

I’ll admit that I’m always suspicious about the male lead in a Reformed Bad Boy/Reformed Party Boy trope. Even in Christian Fiction sometimes there’s too much about the past actions and stupid decisions than the supposed-to-be-better actions and decisions the character is making in the current day. I don’t care for reading about those past choices and some authors dwell too much in those times. A talented author can show the regrets of those sinful moments without pulling the reader through the filth and I think this debut author did well at it. We see that the male lead has changed and no longer desires anything that isn’t in God’s plan for him, which was great.
This was very Hallmark-ish. I do think it was a bit silly that he noticed her clothes but that’s often a thing when it’s a female author trying to write a male’s POV. I didn’t understand what the big deal was with the secret at the halfway point (regarding her nephew)? It felt added in for dramatics and she was pretty ridiculous about it and other comments around the middle of the book. It doesn’t last long, thankfully. I didn’t love her (loved her name, though!) because of this and actions she later did.
As far as a clean celebrity romance, it definitely had its cute moments within the cheese at times, but it would be a potential good read for older girls who want a small town girl, celebrity male lead kind of story. It had some drama, but also some sweet moments and nice faith content throughout the story. Not a new favorite for me, personally, but I overall enjoyed it.
*BFCG may (Read the review to see) recommend this book by this author. It does not mean I recommend all the books by this author. *I received this book for free from the Publisher (Revell) for this honest review.
I loved the hometown feel, the romance and the community. A small town setting with big Hollywood feel. John Pope is an actor who has recently dedicated his life to Christ. Adanne is a makeup artist on the set of his new movie, that is set in her small town. What follows is a sweet enemies, to friends, to romance story. I loved Adanne and her family, and I loved John. I thought John was a great example of new found faith and what it means to find new hope in the fast paced world of Hollywood.

I have been eagerly waiting for this book ever since I got my first glimpse of that gorgeous cover, and I am extremely happy to report that the story on the inside is every bit as gorgeous!
In Her Part to Play, Jenny Erlingsson introduces us to two engaging and multidimensional characters in Adanne and John. Adanne is a makeup artist, yes, but her heart and soul belong to carrying on the legacy of community service that her parents left behind. Unfortunately, in attempting to do so, she often (ok… usually) shoulders more than she should and hesitates to ask for help, taking on the entire burden by herself. Ohhhh I related to Adanne in this. I saw a lot of myself in her, and while that stepped on my toes a little (lol), it did so in the gentlest and best of ways. John is my favorite kind of hero – the reformed rogue. An actor who was skating very close to alcoholism before Jesus redeemed him, he now wants to honor his Savior with his career choices. But a messy breakup from his past keeps resurfacing, and a pushy manager with eyes on John’s success (rather than his faith) brings additional conflict to the story.
I absolutely loved how Adanne and John both turned to God frequently for wisdom, for comfort, for help. This was done so naturally, an organic reaction from each character, and the Biblical truths that Erlingsson includes in Her Part to Play are presented in the same way – never forced or preachy. Rather than put a damper on the romance side of this story, the faith notes actually made the romance even more breathtaking and ‘cherished’ because of the intention that prayer gave to John’s course of action in the last few chapters. I also adored John’s mom and Adanne’s aunt & cousins – they were all strong and delightful women who I would want to just hang out with all the time if I knew them in real life. There’s also a hint of some romantic tension between Adanne’s cousin Kenya and a certain doctor so I’m hoping (really hoping!) that a second book is in the works with these characters!
Bottom Line: Her Part to Play is Jenny Erlingsson’s debut novel but wow! The authentic-feeling character development, the rich layers to the plot, the tender progression of the romance, and the beauty of the faith threads all read like she has multiple published novels under her belt. The multicultural cast of characters was a highlight for me, as was the personal and lived-out (but still room to grow) faith of both Adanne and John. And the romance… oh dear readers… the romance is everything fairy tale and sweet and ‘I forgot to breathe’. The way they see each other for their real selves just filled my heart with joy, particularly in how John truly sees Adanne’s worth and beauty and talent. I cannot wait to see what Jenny Erlingsson writes next, and if you’re a fan of authors like Toni Shiloh and Carolyn Miller, you definitely need to read Her Part to Play too!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
I don't typically enjoy celebrity romance, and I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this one. I did love parts of this, and then I also felt like it wasn't for me. I had mixed emotions about Adanne. I felt her character was whishy, washy. One minute, she was outgoing and pleasant, and the next, she was hateful. Maybe it was just the walls she put up when it came to John, but I didn't know how to take her most of the time. I did love the "slow burn" and the pacing of their relationship. Most romances are a bit insta-lovey, but this was very realistic and believable. The writing style was a bit hit and miss for me, and I found myself skimming over pages to get through in places. I really enjoyed the themes of deep faith in this book, and there were a lot of enjoyable side characters apart from my feelings for Adanne. Overall, I think in the future, I would be willing to revisit this author again. Thank you, NetGalley and Revell, for the opportunity to read and review this advanced copy.
What a sparkling, stunning debut! Jenny Erlingsson weaves a Hollywood makeover tale into a hometown setting that warms the heart – and opens the curtain – on star-crossed lovers faced with learning life's deepest lessons about who they are in Christ. Then, by faith, they can find their way to the meaning of a lasting, true love that honors Him. A modern romance with old-fashioned courage and depth. More, please, from Jenny's pen!
Her Part to Play by Jenny Erlingsson was a pleasure to read. Many elements of the story drew me, but the theme about God doing new, fresh things in a person’s life (taken from Isaiah 43) resonated with me most. My present life circumstances made this theme particularly effective and gave me a right-book-at-the-right time experience. The hope and spiritual truth I gleaned from the novel has continued to encourage me in the days since finishing the story.
I also enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers romance in Her Part to Play. Since the animosity was fairly one-sided, the story also held friends-to-lovers vibes that laid a nice foundation for the romantic development between Adanne and John. While physical attraction appeared frequently, it was never lusty. Plenty of emotional connection and genuine care grew between the characters, making the fruition of their relationship beautiful.
Her Part to Play had a realistic small-town Alabama setting (except for the scenes set in Hollywood). Dialogue between the characters, as well as Adanne’s thoughts, gave an authentic, Alabama feel to the story. Though Adanne’s family served as side characters, they felt lively, real, and made me wish for family like that. Every so often, one of her family members spoke a statement that held a heap of life truth that made me laugh out loud or pause to truly take it in, depending on the situation. Looking back, I see I marked many quotes in the novel.
Her Part to Play stands as Jenny Erlingsson’s fiction debut and I hope she’ll continue her fiction work. I loved everything about this book. Recommended for fans of Christian fiction who enjoy contemporary romances with sparking chemistry, racial diversity, and poignant truth. Five stars!
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
Her Part to Play by Jenny Erlingsson is a heartwarming Christian romance that is hard to believe is a debut since it’s written so well!
It’s a bit of a enemies to friends trope (although only Adanne thinks of John that way because of a past experience) which is not usually something I enjoy, but Erlingsson was able to contain it to a minimum for the most part, with it really being released towards the end… but that final dramatic misunderstanding is par for the course in most romances.
Although I don’t watch much reality TV (besides Traitors) I did enjoy the premise of the Hollywood leading man and all the social media/press that was in the story. I thought it was well done and contributed to the story, especially the small town being helped by big time money.
The characters were well developed and I enjoyed every one of them, but especially John’s mom and Adanne’s cousins. I would love to see the cousin’s getting their own books.
Combine the fantastic characters, lovely location in Alabama, and the religious aspect helping the two characters grow and begin to figure out who they are truly meant to be, and you have a book that I highly recommend!

This was my first time reading a Contemporary Christian Fiction by Jenny Erlingsson so I wasnt sure what to expect but I have to say I really enjoyed. It reminded me alot of an UPTV Movie ive seen before just can't recall the name of it.
The Characters were fun and enjoyable to read about. It was hard to pick just one as my favorite since I seemed to like all of the Characters.
The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like I was actually in Alabama while reading especially when the scenery was described.
I do wish this was part of a series because i'd LOVE to see what the Characters would be up to next..
Overall a Good Contemporary Christian Fiction. Can't wait to read more by Jenny in the future.
This book is about enemies becoming friends and continuing on to a relationship. The author does a fantastic job of weaving the Christian life and struggles into the storyline. As a debut novel Jenny has done a great job. If you enjoy Hallmark movies this book is for you.
4.5 ⭐️s—This was such a hope-filled story laced with themes of forgiveness and redemption!
On the heels of losing her mother, Adanne Stewart takes a job as a makeup artist for a film shooting in her small Alabama town. Already feeling like she’s carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders, the last thing she needs is to be assigned to the movie star that had her fired from a set two years earlier.
John Pope, once an arrogant actor who pushed his weight to get things done, is totally shocked by this new makeup artist who seems to have a chip on her shoulder. After having his life turned around by rediscovering the faith of his youth, his humility and kindheartedness start to tear down Adanne’s walls. But can she trust that he’s truly a different man than she encountered two years prior?
I LOVED this story! Jenny is a masterful writer and her words are beautiful. I’m a sucker for a story where the MCs overcome difficult circumstances and there’s growth on the other side. Jenny did such an amazing job weaving this into their stories. There was also a clear, strong Christian theme that was beautifully integrated!
If you’re looking for a sweet, swoon-worthy read with no spice and all the feels, check this debut novel out!
Nice! Jenny Erlingsson’s debut novel, HER PART TO PLAY is a complex contemporary romance with characters that have real problems. How great is it to have a Hollywood makeover where the makeover includes a spiritual and heart transformation for the makeover-er and the makeover-ee!
THE STORY: Adanne is an out-of-work makeup artist who was fired from her Hollywood gig. Back home in Alabama she is hired by a production company filming in her small hometown. Except, the actor that had her fired in Hollywood will now sit in her chair in Alabama. John is trying to walk out his new faith as an actor. He’s run into various examples of collateral damage he caused with his drinking and wild ways over the years. Little does he know, one such example is Adanne—the beautiful makeup artist he had fired. The two journeys toward faith, healing, and love—and second chances—is a page-turner.
Highly recommended to readers of contemporary romance, diverse characters, southern fiction, faith journeys, clean fiction, happily-ever-after stories.
I received an ARC from the publisher for my honest review.
What a great debut! I've been very into celebrity romance books lately, so naturally this one caught my eye right away. John is a famous actor who had a bit of a messy past until he turned his life over to God and sought to make changes. Among those he hurt in the past is the makeup artist Adanna, though he has no idea. The curiosity as to what exactly happened kept me intrigued throughout the story and I loved that the author gave just enough to keep you wondering until it was full revealed. The chemistry between these two was really fun and I very much enjoyed them together. It was definitely a slow burn... but the payoff was worth it.
As much as I loved the romance, I also really loved the sense of community and faith themes within the story too. Yes, you get some of that Hollywood glam... but you also get the small-town moments too. I loved seeing John's desire to give back... and not just for publicity. Overall, it was a really beautiful story with lots of heartfelt moments that I really enjoyed. With a debut like this, I definitely look forward to seeing more from the author in the future.
**Complimentary copy received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
I'm so happy that I decided to give Christian fiction another try. The writing has evolved from rigid cardboard characters to relatable people with real lives and real faith.
Adanne and John are both dealing with the weight of their current circumstances, looking for hope in the face of hurt and loss.
John is new to faith, and Adanne has been a Christian much longer, however, she's suffering from a crisis of faith. It is not as terrible as the professor in God's Not Dead, but she fights the insidious doubts.
I loved the scene where she is visiting her nephew in the hospital. All she can do is sing a hymn where the lyrics express what she can't because she wants to believe but is doubtful after her prior experience.
I, too, have been to a point of crisis where my suffering was deep, and I was so angry that my body was present in church every week, but I tuned out the sermons.
Godly music restored me. It was like the scripture that says when we don't even know what to pray, the Holy Spirit does it for us with groanings too deep for words.
Jenny weaves a beautiful, realistic, faith-filled contemporary story of how God redeems us with His love. That very love makes it impossible to hold on to hurts and unforgiveness. The result is two imperfect people looking to God for perfection.
Her Part to Play was a 5-star read. I was hooked by the cover and I was not disappointed. It had everything I love that makes a book an outstanding read: faith in action, real-life woes, character transparency, character growth, and a touch of romance, clean, of course.

I have to say that the narrator was entirely too slow in reading this book. I had to bump up the speed way more than normal just to feel like she was talking at a normal speed.
For me, I felt like the chemistry was a bit lacking between the main characters. But I did like both characters. I enjoyed that the setting was a small town in Alabama instead of LA or anywhere else you’d expect to find an actor. The pace of the book was on the slow side (not sure if that’s just because of the narrator?).
I do think fans of Toni Shiloh will enjoy this book. The writing style is very similar.
3.5* This was a good story, with beautiful faith. I love how this author wove faith so easily into her characters. Adrianne is a makeup artist that has had a lot of lost and burdens. Because so much has happened she has taken on the role of feeling she has to care for everyone even as she is sinking. She has an encounter with Joh, a movie star that got her fired from a job a few years prior. This book follows there journey together and as individuals. As John is a few years sober and trying to figure out exactly what that looks like. And Adrianne is a journey of allowing others be her community and accept help. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an early readers copy to honestly read and review!
This is a debut novel by this author, and it is an absolutely beautiful story. I loved the characters, and enjoyed watching their romance come to life. Adanne was an especially memorable character. She was determined to do what she could for her family, and gave of herself in abundance. But it was time she realized what her own needs were. I enjoyed reading along and watching her grow into who God created her to be.
Her career was also intriguing, and fascinating, but I have to admit, it is one I know nothing about...being a makeup artist for an actor.
Realistic setting, lovely characters, and an intriguing plot, this story was well worth the read.

My Review:
Adanne certainly needs the money she has plans and getting fired from her last job probably wasnt the best thing since she has all these goals. While reading about her I can see where her attitude may have played a role in that. But that is neither here nor there. So as she heads back to her hometown she has decided to take a last minute job there. But upon doing so she encounters the actor who got her fired. So now she can choose to take the high road or make this guy pay for what he did.
Follow along as Adanne is put into an uncomfortable situation that could jeopardize her future and her future goals.
This story will take you by surprise. A good beach read, for sure!
**Disclosure**This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Her Part to Play by Jenny Erlingsson is a delightfully excellent Contemporary Romance. I loved every page of this sweet story. There is so much to like about this story: the highly-engaging plot, the realistic and well-crafted characters, the slow-burn romance, and the deep themes discussed throughout the story. Adanne is an exceptional heroine. She is strong, hard working, and incredibly sacrificial. Family is everything to her; both celebrating and honoring the memory of her beloved deceased parents AND doing everything she can to support her brother, sister-in-law, and very sick seven-year old nephew. I adore Adanne’s devotion to her family. I also love her devotion to God. Everything she does is checked first through her faith and what God would want and expect. I really, really love and appreciate Adanne’s strong, firm faith. She is quite an inspiration. John is a great hero. What I appreciate the most about his character is how authentic he is. He is a man who has made a lot of mistakes in his past, but has cleaned up his act. Erlingsson does a great job illustrating through John how difficult it is to be a new creation in Christ. Temptations still exist. Mistakes are still made. I like how John is honest about who he is, what he has come through, and how hard it is to stay “good” in an industry that thrives off of bad behaviors, lasciviousness, and drama. In addition to loving Adanne and John as characters, I also really love and appreciate the message on the importance of family. I like the idea developed throughout the story that family is there to help with burdens, to be shoulders to lean on no matter what. I LOVED Adanne’s family SO much. They are so full of life and love and joy. They tell everyone how it is, but they are also there with good food and big hugs. We would all be so fortunate to have such wonderful and loving family members in our lives.
Her Part to Play is a lovely debut Contemporary Romance that I highly recommend. If you are a fan of well-written, highly engaging Romances filled with heart and depth, then you do not want to miss out on this story!

Jenny Erlingsson's Her Part to Play is a superb debut novel that has this reader eagerly anticipating her next one!
Adanne took on a last-minute makeup job on a movie set. With her days already filled to the brim with managing her late parent's community centre and caring for her brother, whose young son is battling cancer, this girl needed a break! Unfortunately, she ends up doing makeup for the same actor who got her fired on her last movie set and cost her a job she desperately needed. For her to forgive him, it will take a deep trust in the Lord.
John Pope doesn't know why Adanne is so standoffish with him and clearly not a fan, but he hopes his newfound faith in God will help win her over. Unfortunately, he has no idea what he did to her, and it will take a lot for John to break down Adanne's walls.
I loved the faith element in this book, as well as how hard each character leaned on Christ to get them through the many obstacles in their way. I loved how realistic their love story was, and that it wasn't like a Hallmark movie. It was genuinely natural, as both characters first grew to be friends, surprised at how much they had in common.
This was a brilliant debut novel, and I look forward to reading more by this author.
For my honest opinion, I received a complimentary copy from Revell via NetGalley.
Adanne steps in as John’s MUA for a new movie in her small hometown Hope Springs. John recently has gone through a break up & burning bridges with some in the industry, he’s trying to get his head back in the game & be a better man with the help of his team. Adanne has a lot on her plate & now working for a man she doesn’t like & while also being there for her family thru a difficult time, but as time passes they both become more drawn to each other. I liked that this was a beautiful story with no crazy trauma or struggle love between the two. This story is based in a small town & follows to people that have a very strong Christian faith. I’m not a fan of slow burns but I did find this stories pacing to be realistic for them to get to know each other and fall for one another eventually . John seemed to really take being a better person to heart & although Adanne had terrible communication skills at times in my opinion but she went through a lot of family loss etc so I can see where she was trying to find her footing in life. The author is very detailed in her writing so you literally feel like can envision every scene, smell, taste & so one. Decent story overall & I am grateful for this complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review.
First thing first, how about this cover. Isn't it absolutely gorgeous!! I couldn't resist this tour simply based on that! This is a quick read with sweet characters. I haven't finished it yet, as it is another victim of interference by current unexpected demands on my time. I am only a quarter into it, but I am curious about the past connection between the two main characters and have some guesses about what might happen to help with their current struggles. It is giving me cozy romance, happy ending Hallmark vibes and I'm here for it. The writing is smooth and easy with realistic conversations, interesting characters and clear settings. I can't wait to finish it. Having finished it over vacation, it was indeed a cozy romance, happy ending book with a small town feel and a focus on Christian worldview, with characters who had relationships with Jesus. Down to earth living with some Hollywood glam and ups and downs on the road to together, this was an easy and enjoyable read, that brought a few tears along the way.
This is a heartwarming story of two people moving beyond their pasts and leaning on their faith. Adanne worked with John previously. Their association ended poorly, but John doesn't remember her. Adanne has a strong sense of family and doesn't trust easily as past hurts and disappointments have yet to heal. John has dedicated his life to God but is still somewhat wary of relationships after a bad breakup. Can Adanne trust John after their previous interaction? Can John be the person Adanne needs, or will his publicity requirements get in the way?
I feel like this could be set in my small hometown. The author captured the small-town friendliness of everyone knowing everyone. She delivers on family being there for family and doing what you can to help others. The characters bless their food. They attend church. They actively seek guidance from the Lord. This is a wonderful book. This author writes what she knows.
Thanks to NetGalley and Revell for an e-arc in exchange for an unbiased review.
I enjoy stories that feature new beginnings, especially those with southern settings, so I knew I’d enjoy “Her Part to Play.” I’m typically not a fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope, still, the romance between Adanne and John is believable.
Adanne is a complicated character for me. There were times I liked her and times I didn’t. I connected better to John, but not fully. I appreciate the changes in his life, and how he attempts to overcome obstacles.
Though the story’s pacing is a little slow in some areas, I love the elements of faith and forgiveness.

I enjoyed this one way more than I thought I would!!
I really found this sweet book wayyyy more interesting than I thought I would! 🥹
I enjoyed the sweet love story between Adanne and John. I loved John’s mom and the wisdom she graciously added to the story. Their mother and son relationship was so beautiful to see. I found that the whole Hollywood setting of this story was fun and written well. It was a heartwarming and uplifting story for anyone needing a quick and light read.
Erlingsson did a great job weaving in faith based themes without it feeling like she was stuffing it down anyone’s throats. I especially loved the way that John was drawn back closer to finding a relationship with Jesus again. 🥹
This is Erlingsson’s fiction debut and I would definitely read from her again!! If you live small town stories, enemies to more, this is the one for you!
I really enjoyed this book and didn't want to leave Hope Springs and all of the enjoyable characters in it. The author had a way of bringing the characters to life with her words which further pulled the reader into the story. The book provided all of the emotions from laughter to tears. I loved how Adanne fought so hard for her community and her family's legacy. John was working to overcome his troublesome past and had the support of his godly mother. The supporting characters were amazing too especially little Jason!
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.
What a fun debut novel! I really liked spunky Adanne and down-to-earth John and the romantic tension between them. I laughed out loud at their interactions more than once! I liked how they navigated faith together, which served to deepen their relationship. The setting of a movie set was interesting and I thought the author did a great job describing the ins and outs of the movie industry. There were moments of seriousness and the plot had a few unexpected twists that kept my attention. The writing was well done and it was easy to become immersed in the story. I recommend this novel to all lovers of contemporary romantic fiction, and I cannot wait to read the next book by this talented author!

I quickly fell in love with not only Adanne and John but also with Hope Springs, Alabama. The family relationships felt authentic and I could visualize that small town as they strolled through the streets. The descriptions of southern cuisine could almost be smelt through the pages. Adanne is spunky and funny but is dealing with the hardships of life. This novel has drama, sorrow, and plenty of joy. I throughly enjoyed this charming Christian novel.
an uplifting contemporary romance from a debut author!
makeup artist adanne takes a job on a movie set filming in her small alabama town—for the movie star that got her fired from her last job. she may not be john pope's biggest fan, but their time together still sparks an unexpected friendship—and maybe even something more.
of course, they each have their own challenges. recently reformed, john needs to jumpstart his career—and a public relationship may be just the boost it needs. adanne, on the other hand, doesn't have time for the spotlight, overwhelmed with the (costly) familial obligations she shoulders. will they be able to overcome these challenges together, or are their lives too different?
as the drama between and around adanne and john plays out, her part to play offers a lot of great moments. i loved seeing how they got to know each other, surrounded by small-town charm and family interaction. for both characters, faith plays an important role, and i was so encouraged seeing it woven into the character growth throughout the story.
with all these elements together (romance and drama, faith and family), her part to play delivers a great read for fans of contemporary fiction.
(i have to say: if you loved toni shiloh's the love script, you need to check out her part to play. they share plenty of commonalities—he's a reformed celebrity, she works behind the scenes, etc.—but don't worry; the stories take a few different turns to tell distinct stories.)
