Tallean Mercenaries #8

A Redemption for Ulrek

Rate this book
Refuge in the Arms of a Monster This job on board the New Horizon is supposed to be my fresh start, a fail proof plan to escape my poor excuse for a husband and his dangerous friends. But my white horse quickly turns into a nightmare when I discover that my new boss is none other than Ulrek the Horrible, my sworn enemy. There’s no way I’ll work for the ruthless captain responsible for stealing me from Earth. So contract be damned, I quit! But there are dangers out there worse than a reformed Dominion captain, and with nowhere left to turn, I find myself back on his ship…and in his arms. There’s no denying the treacherous passion that burns between us. And now, the very monster who once captured my body threatens to capture my heart. This enemies-to-lovers alien romance features the villain from a previous book, and while he has switched sides, he is still morally gray. If this upsets you, please skip this book. As always, lots of action and steamy scenes ahead. HEA guaranteed!

Delaney (h), a strong-willed human seeking to escape her abusive ex, finds herself on a spaceship, only to discover that her boss is none other than Ulrek (H), the Tallean who once abducted her from Earth. Ulrek, a former Dominion captain seeks redemption for his dark past and carries a bounty on his head, ignites sparks with Delaney, even as she grapples with her past trauma. The story balances electric chemistry with moments of tension as Delaney struggles with her feelings for the man she once despised. Ulrek's redemption arc is well-executed, where Ulrek's transformation from a former villain to a hero is complex and relatable. Delaney and Ulrek share a complex journey of action, danger, betrayal, and the power of forgiveness, all set in a futuristic, otherworldly backdrop. An engaging and passionate alien-human enemies-to-lovers romance that blends action, redemption, and the allure of newfound love.

Unexpected Refuge

Ok, so, I was one of the people who was on board for this book. That being said, I still went into this book being cautiously optimistic because let’s face it, we’re talking about Ulrek 😉😂 Why did I even doubt him a little bit 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ During the 1st moment he entered into the book, he had me hooked. Within just a few chapters I felt bad for him, and wanted to give him a hug, tell him things would get better, & that people would eventually judge him for who he was now, not who he was in the past 🤗 Let me tell you….Delaney only sees the past when she looks at him, but that doesn’t change the fact that she is the PERFECT balance for this man. He definitely needed to be with someone who wasn’t afraid to call him out when he would mess up, and didn’t back down in fear around him. I mean he definitely had his work cut out for him on sooooo many levels with her, for sure. As if it wasn’t bad enough that he was hated by everyone who knew his reputation as a Dominion officer, he was also the captain of the ship that abducted Delaney from earth 👀🤦🏻‍♀️🫣 When Delaney leaves her abusive ex on Reka 5 to work on a spaceship, she’s less than pleased to find out who the captain is 🙄😝 Too bad for her, her issues with Ulrek are the least of her problems, so like it or not, working on his ship was in her future, and a good thing too when those issues end up being a big problem. Once she’s on his ship (ok, he was fascinated from the moment he met her 😉😈) Ulrek sees for himself that this woman has worked hard to be strong, and he also finds himself bringing out her fire (in more ways than one 🤭🔥). Their back & forth banter is hilarious, and watching their personalities bounce off each other was just like watching a tennis match 😂 I LOVED watching him win her over, and showing her that a person’s past does not have to define their future. As usual, there is no shortage of humor, adventure, action, friendship, passion, and love worth fighting for in this series 🙌🏻 The epilogue was so perfect, and just the right glimpse into their future 😍 Bottom line…Ulrek DID redeem himself in his book, in so many ways, and I gotta say, I do believe he is now one of my favorite Tallean guys. Who knew 🤯 If you’ve read the books in this series, but were on the fence as to whether you wanted to read this, do yourself a favor…READ IT! Give him a chance to earn your forgiveness & respect 🥺 Delaney did (eventually 😏😝), and if she can forgive him & fall in love with him, I’m betting you will too 🥰❤️

4.25 stars. Delaney, the female human lead, has studied hard to improve her qualifications and to acquire a job that will allow her to leave the sanctuary planet and her abusive ex but she’s horrified to find that her new boss, Ulrek, the male alien lead, is the same alien who abducted her (and many others) from Earth. Though he no longer acts on behalf of the alien government that invaded Earth, Ulrek isn’t surprised by her reaction to him but he does need her skills and she has signed a formal contract that he’s determined to enforce for his crew’s benefit. The attraction he feels toward her doesn’t hurt either…

However, Ulrek has persistent enemies following him, and Delaney’s ex is determined to get her back under his control. Can they escape their enemies?

This story is dual POV, well written, and has been a long time coming. Ulrek has been the bad guy in previous stories in the series, then a more neutral but still not good character. Even now, as a main character, he’s not a nice guy. I enjoyed how the author portrayed his change of position whilst retaining the essence of his character as shown in other stories. He does care - for specific people and he wants to add Delaney to their number. I enjoyed Delaney’s changing perspective on Ulrek and Ulrek’s growing regard for her, culminating in his willingness to sacrifice what he needed to for her. I found their intimate scenes interesting, though they felt somewhat rougher than previous stories, which is in line with Ulrek’s behaviour in previous stories and his written personality. This is not my favourite story in the series but I have enjoyed watching Ulrek change through the series and I enjoyed the way Delaney’s strength pushed him further and kept her from being steamrolled by him. I really enjoyed the cameos from other characters and being back in this setting and hope the author writes more!

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

This was a brilliant book that had hoping that these two would come together with the old saying opposite attract. Delaney is a human female that was kidnapped from Earth by the Diminion slavers and now she has just signed a new contract to work on the New Horizon in there greenhouse after leaving her Ex husband and his dangerous friends hoping for a fresh start but when she gets on board she comes face to face with the Evil Captain that took her from Earth in the first place and she panics and leaves to ship but they tell her he is reformed but how can she trust him. Ulrek is the new Captain of the New Horizon after he was reformed Diminion Captain and now he has just seen the human female that he remembers taking from Earth on orders and the same attraction he had back then is just as strong today but when she runs in fear from him and he cannot blame her but he needs to work it out with her now she will be working on his ship. After she leaves the ship she realises she has no where to go and has signed a contract and must return to the ship but the scariest part is the attraction she feels for him when he is the enemy. How will it all turn out in the end and can these two work out there feeling to have a HEA or not.

It's time for big, bad Ulrek to find his happily ever after and let's just say not everybody loves the former Dominion caption who learned what utter JERKS the Dominion was before switching sides. Ulrek might be standing against the Dominion now, but once upon a time he did everything he was ordered to do and it is going to take a lot for people to forgive that.

Take Delaney, for example. She signs on with the New Horizon as a means to get away from her controlling, abusive husband. She has no idea Ulrek is the captain and she's firmly against helping him with ANYTHING due to his part in taking humans from Earth. But she did sign a contract and Ulrek isn't willing to let her dissolve it because he's kind of desperate for a greenroom technician given the state of his greenroom. Also, her controlling husband? He might actually be worse than Ulrek.

Soon these two are trading verbal spars as Delaney (reluctantly) agrees to at least diagnose the issues in the greenroom. To say that Ulrek enjoys Delaney's sass might be an understatement. And when her soon-to-be-former husband takes steps to keep Delaney in his grasp, Ulrek doesn't hesitate to step in.

After all, a Tallean only gets one mate and it looks like the sassy tech is his. *thumbs up*

An enemies to lovers, alien romance that is entertaining and captured my interest from the beginning.

Delaney is a human woman who has every reason to consider Captain Ulrek her enemy since he was responsible for her being captured from Earth and turned into a Diminion slave. She is horrified to learn he is the captain in the warship she has signed a contract to manage and care for greenroom (greenhouse on a warship). She’s trying to leave her cheating and controlling human husband.

Captain Ulrek defected from the Dominion years ago and has been trying to atone for his past actions under an alias, but he isn’t surprised at Delaney’s reaction to him.

These two have electric chemistry and Ulrek enjoys Delaney’s spirited defiance and how she stands up to him. Delaney is attracted to the alien captain yet still considers him her enemy. The nonstop verbal scuffles are entertaining and provide the spark for many of their steamy romps.

The storyline has the enemies to lovers trope with plenty of drama surrounding the bounty on Ulrek’s head, betrayal and the support of close friends, with enough humor to keep things lively and entertaining.

Redemption. Does Ulrek deserve it? After all of the atrocities he committed under the command of the Dominion. Some would say absolutely not. But this isn't about whether you think he deserves it or not. This is about whether Delaney thinks he deserves redemption. Can she forgive his pass discretions against her, and for that matter against the people from Earth .
I love how we slowly find out really, who is Ulrek. What has he been doing since he left the Dominion. And how he tries, and tries and tries to convince Delaney that he has changed. And for the better. He gets help from unexpected sources.
It doesn't stop there. His enemies are closing in and he has to protect those he calls family and of course Delaney, whether she wants it or not.
I love the chemistry between . The drama and bantering between them. He thinks he can "control" her but realizes humans are independent and resourceful.
Action, intrigue and of course eventual spice to the romance. Edge of your seat drama. I love the HEA.
Well done, Lynnea. I'm so glad you are continuing the Tallean Mercenaries series. Ulrek was an excellent start again.

"Now that he’d switched alliances, Ulrek was hated by both sides equally."

Ulrek saw the error of his ways - but ask anyone he hurt and they'll say it was too late.

Delaney is living a new life, after countless struggles, at least a few of which she can lay the fault or blame for at someone else's doorstep, and it all started with Ulrek. But that's the past, she's learned new skills and is going to use them to leave the past behind and build the life she wants... unfortunately the Universe isn't done teaching her lessons or making her face reality.

This done in one kindle unlimited story does refer back to previous books, but stands solidly on its own. The previous books do add depth to the backstory, but everything needed for an enjoyable read is in this book, which I appreciated since I read the books as they are released and book 1 feels like it was 'a while ago.'

I loved the themes in this book, not just of forgiveness, and making peace with our pasts, but the thread about double standards we apply to people, ourselves included really stood out to me.

I read A Redemption for Ulrek in Kindle unlimited and chose to share my thoughts.

“…but now she wanted the dangerous captain more than ever. She must have a few screws loose.”

Just a wonderful and heartfelt read about the power of redemption. Ulrek, a prior Dominion Captain who had been responsible for Delaney as well as other Humans being kidnapped and sold into slavery. But that was years ago and Ulrek learned the hard way that things aren’t always what they seem. He has since became “a good guy”, turning against the Dominion and trying to make up for his past. When Delaney takes a job on his ship, not knowing he was on it, she is unable to forget or forgive him and leaves. But fate has other plans, and lots of action along with danger, brings them together again. I love that Delaney is strong, strong in her convictions, yet ultimately able to view the evidence in front of her. Ulrek is a secret “cinnamon roll” hero and you can’t help but root for him to win her over. The interactions with the rest of the crew helps to flesh out the story. Great read!.

I enjoyed this enemies-to-lovers story very much. Ulrek is a reformed Dominion captain who many people still hate including Delaney. Just as she gets out of a bad marriage she decides to take a job on a starship and escape her old life only to find herself face-to-face with her hated enemy.

The chemistry between the two sizzles from the beginning. All the while that Delaney is trying to convince herself that it is just physical, Ulrek is trying to deal with the fact that his attraction to Delaney seems more and more to be a mate bond. She's tough and stubborn, and he doesn't think he deserves anything as good as her. But watching them develop a relationship is beautiful. And I love how protective and possessive Ulrek is towards Delaney. She can count on him to protect and care for her always. There are lots of familiar characters from previous books in the series that add to the plot as first Delaney's and then Ulrek's pasts catch up to them and have to be dealt with before they can live peacefully.

Delaney was abducted from Earth ny the Dominion and has built herself a life, unfortunately part of that life was her no account husband. Now she has taken a job on a ship called New Horizon, only the day she she reports to the ship it turns out that the captain of the ship is Ulrek, none other than a Dominion officer who was responsible for the abduction of so many humans. She immediately walks out applying to have her contract nullified. I could understand her feelings and Ulrek did a really good job of hiding his good heart. But once you realise the indoctrination that his people go through from birth it makes you understand where they are coming from and actually made their turning against the Dominion even more impressive. Can Delaney see through the facade that Ulrek presents to the world and see the male that he truly is? An amazing story that had me glued to the pages with characters that leap off the pages and are a joy to journey with.

So unbelievably great🔥🌟💖

I did not think Ms.Lee could redeem Ulrek, but I wss completely wrong. By the end of this book I was just as in love with him as Delaney. Ulrek was one of the bad guys since the beginning if the series only showing shades of gray as he learned more about the empire and the .manipulation and greed that really runs it. When Delaney apple debtor a job onboard a ship to take care of the green room she never would have guessed it would be the male that kidnapped her from Earth. Ulrek just needs someone to fix his freak facility onboard his ship when Delaney applies for the job he's instantly attracted to her and is worried that its more than meets the eye. No matter how much Delaney pushes him away he can't help but want her and when the past catches up to both of them true feeling emerges. They must destroy their enemies and admit their love only then will they ever truly be happy. One of my favorite in the whole series! Highly recommend sooo freaking well done!!!!!🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥🌟💖🔥💖🌟🔥🌟💖🔥

Delaney is about to start her new job as the greenroom technician on the New Horizons ship only to discover that its captain is Ulrek the Horrible, the Tallean who had taken her and many other women from Earth. Determined to break the contract with Ulrek, she also wants to get away from ex who won't let her go. The attraction between the two of them is electric but Delaney feels guilty every time she spends with him. Despite a bounty on his head which Delaney keeps getting caught up in, the more time they spend together, the more chance Ulrek has of Delaney changing her mind. A beautiful, hot and steamy book full of action and drama, betrayal and redemption, that will literally have you on the edge of your seat as you read it. I loved seeing how you shouldn't judge someone based on their past history but what they are doing now.

The FMC really resonated for me in a ton of ways, but especially because of the theme super early on of not leaving a bad relationship for financial and then self esteem reasons. The way the author wrote the leaving an unhealthy relationship story felt really authentic and grounded to me so I really appreciated that. When it came to the relationship between the MC's themselves honestly it boils down to this line: "Ulrek was a monster, yes. But he was her monster." For the MMC who is a former villain, this book is absolutely a redemption arc for him and is SO satisfying. I love how he talks about the belief system that drove his former actions and doesn't use it as an excuse, but rather a reason, and that he doesn't try and absolve himself of his past. I love a good accountability babe. Deeply dug this book and I was thrilled to have been an ARC reader for it. 5/5 Stars!.

Ulrek was the captain of the ship that kidnapped Delaney along with a bunch of other humans to be used as slaves by the Dominion. Later on, Ulrek left the Dominion and had been doing all he could to make amends to the people he hurt by his actions for the past few years. When Delaney met up with him again, she was a free woman on Reka 5 and saw him as the enemy for the part he played in her kidnapping. Unfortunately for Ulrek, he realized Delaney was his mate. My heart felt raw imagining Ulrek's pain whenever Delaney rejected him. He was a reformed person but It took Delaney a really long time to come around and see him for the person he had become. Most of the story felt bittersweet to me. But, of course, they did have the sweetest HEA. I loved the epilogue where we get a glimpse of their life many years later. It was a perfect ending.

A Redemption for Ulrek brings back a villainous character from the first Tallean Mercenaries series in an enemies-to-lovers pièce de résistance of romance and the past colliding with the present.
When former Dominion slave MFC Delaney arrives for her new position aboard a state of the art space ship the first surprise was observing it was a battle cruiser. Second was on meeting her new boss, former Captain in the Dominion militia who had abducted her and other humans from Earth, MMC Ulrek.
Whoa, this is going to get intense!
Loved this new story with it’s adventure, emotion, steam, and dramatiś that provided a well written engaging story and kept the twists and compelling narrative gathering heat from page to page.

Enemies to Lovers

Delaney is looking for a new start on a new ship, but everything flips on its head when she meets the captain and her new boss. It’s former Dominion Captain, Ulrek the Horrible. He’s the very Dominion Captain responsible for her captivity as well as many other humans.

Ulrek has left the Dominion and has been trying to undue the damage he brought to others as a Dominion Captain. When he sees Delaney, her disgust of him is ever present but he can’t give up because she’s his mate. He now has to prove himself and hopefully she will give him another chance.

Loved this story! It’s a sweet, slow-burn, enemies to lovers romance. The epilogue at the end was a nice touch and rounded out the story perfectly.

When you come face to face with the alien captain who had you kidnapped from earth, are you going to care that they changed? nope

Ulrek is the bad guy for so many that he has embraced the persona. He has his alternative identity and his loyal crew. Delaney is floored to find out her dream job is for someone she never thought she would see again. As she has to spend more time with Ulrek, certain things become undeniable - how hot Ulrek is and how he doesn't see as evil as she remembers. She has issues reconciling her new developing feelings and her old ones wiht Ulrek cast as the villian.

Story provides a well earned redemption with a great tour of previous characters on Vosthea and Reka 5.

A great addition to this world.

I have adored the Talleans since I read the very first one and it think that it is somehow fitting that we get to find out how and why Ulrek is the way that he is. I honestly hope that this is a renewal of them and not an ending.
This has been pieced together so well that you can see the progression of change in Ulrek. He is genuinely trying to make up for what he has did and in a sucker punch way it seems fitting that Delaney should be his mate. She has had to strive for her life nearly every step of the way and it has not been an easy journey. The blame can be squarely laid at Ulrek's door so how would you deal with finding out who your new boss is if you were her? There are undeniably strong emotions and it all comes down to forgiveness. Would you, could you forgive?
I truly hope that this does mean more Talleans in the future. Please??!

- Sci fi romance
- Protector vibes
- Enemies to lovers

I love the world that this author created. The aliens are fierce, but also fiercely protective.

Delaney is eager to start a new life far away from her soon to be former husband. He is not a kind person and has a strong dislike of the alien culture. However, when Delaney discovers that Ulrek is the captain of the ship she signed up for, she wants to leave immediately. She knew Ulrek from before - when he worked with the Dominion. He no longer does, but Delaney is not willing to forgive him.

Ulrek finally convinces her to give the job a chance after he helps her out of a bad situation. But will he be able to convince her to also give him a chance?

Steamy and action packed, I was absolutely glued to this book.

This is an alien enemies-to-lovers romance. Once started I couldn't put the book down. Delaney, a human woman, finds that she is assigned to work on a warship to care for the greenhouse. Captain Ulrek left the Dominion years ago and has been trying to redeem himself under an alias and isn't surprised that Delaney wants out of the contract. These two have blazing chemistry and Ulrek enjoys Delaney's feistiness and defiance and how she's not scared to stand up to him. Delany is still hot for Ulrek but still thinks of him as her enemy. Ulrek has a bounty on his head and is trying to protect the ones he considers family and also Delaney. There is plenty of action, drama, banter, intrigue. and sizzling steam. Delaney and Ulrek need to fix their pasts to get their future. Excellent book.

Delaney is a human that was kidnapped from Earth by Ulrek to become slaves. She has hated him for years for how he treated humans. Now she is a citizen of Reka 5 and has studied to be a greenroom supervisor on spaceships. When she first arrived on Reka 5, she was so scared of Talleans that she married a man just for the protection of marriage to keep Talleans. A few years later she has learned that Talleans are nothing to fear but her purist husband and friends are. Delaney signs up for a job to restore the greenroom on the New Horizon to get away from her soon to be ex-husband when she files for divorce. However she has a rude awakening when she steps on the New Horizon. Her new boss is Ulrek. Delaney wants nothing to do with him but when he saves her from her ex, she decides to give him a chance.

While there were parts that weren't written quite as smoothly as others, the story itself is enjoyable. And does a good job of showcasing that people can do horrific things without being 100% evil. How they should have to atone for or justify their actions may not be something everyone can agree on, but it's rare to find someone who is only good or only evil.

Delaney grapples with these things as she gets to know a new group of people, some of whom have done unspeakable things. But she realizes that despite the fact that they committed the same heinous act, she doesn't forgive them all as easily. They have a similar story, but inconstantly doles out forgiveness and judgement.

And she has a bit of sass and works with plants (which excites me as a gardening addict!).

I've only read two books in this series so far but I really like the stories. The male lead seeking redemption for his past atrocities was heartfelt. The female lead was nerve wrecking at times with her constant switching from I hate him and fighting their attraction to bedding him at the drop of a hat and then feeling guilty afterwards and going again with the I hate him phase. The storyline was decent and kept me wanting to read more. I really liked the idea of the *bloodlust*, I'm very glad that our female lead didn't announce at the end that she's pregnant because quite frankly that is a ending I'm getting so tired of instead the author introduces the reader to their son in the epilogue and he isn't introduced as a baby another writing difference that I liked. I will be starting on the next book.

This is a wild story that has Delaney, a human gal, and takes her from a bad situation and puts her in a worse one - under contract to the guy from the Dominion who abducted her from Earth. This is a hard no for her but, of course, things aren't that simple. The author did a fab job balancing the chemistry between her and Ulrek with the danger and tension that exists around and between them. This was a real page turner for me as Ulrek's transition from villain to a redeemed male was realistic and well done. There is so much action, danger, betrayal, forgiveness and steam that I read it in one sitting. I really enjoyed this one and am glad that love found a way for someone that I was sure didn't deserve it ;D

Ulrek was a character I wasn't sure I would actually like. I've read the entire series though,so I had to see what was going to happen and how he works redeem himself. And wow, did he redeem himself. The author shares about how he became Ulrek the Horrible and then how he began to grow and change and become a new male. It was a wonderful read and I really appreciate how Delaney was able to slowly work on forgiving him as their relationship progressed and then flourished...I also really loved how protective he was and growly. Ha! You'll love this one if you don't mind the redeemable rascal and the lady who loves him in spite of it!.

'Right now, Ulrek looked and sounded exactly like the monster Delaney had thought he was when they first met. Except he was her monster. He’d come to her rescue. And that made all the difference.'

It's been a while since I've read a Tallean romance, so I was looking forward to going back to them. And I love a good villain redemption story! I couldn't wait to see where it would go! Great world building and wonderful characters. It's the epitome of an enemies-to-lovers story as Ulrek had been the one responsible to Delaney's imprisonment. I liked seeing his journey trying to atone and seeing things from his perspective. He and Delaney had such great chemistry and I enjoyed their back and forth. A fast-paced exciting read. I loved it! 5 stars.

The true test of a good story and an entertaining series that you love to read is when you're thrown a curveball! And I must admit I really didn't see this one coming. Be that as it may, I found the characters endearing and the storyline kept me enthralled. Ulrek was a character that I had come to despise, so finding his redeeming qualities along with Delaney was quite a revelation. Delaney didn't want to be attracted to him, but it seemed at every turn he showed depths of compassion that the old "Ulrek the Horrible" wasn't capable of. Lots of action, danger and adventure as well as steamy romance, that kept me entertained from beginning to end.

Delaney is a human on Reka-5 trying to escape her abusive ex. She takes a job on a ship as the green room technician thinking she is home free. Then she meets the Captain of the ship, Ulrek The Terrible. He was the Dominion Captain that stole her from Earth. Even though he supposedly switched sides and has a huge bounty on his head by the Dominion, no way is she working for him! But she signed the contract and he is unwilling to let her out of it, especially when he suspects she is his mate.

This is a fast paced, action packed story with lots of emotions and introspection. I couldn’t put it down!.
