Rate this book
There’s a super storm brewing out in the Pacific… one that will change the course of history forever…

After three successful raids on Japanese outposts, the men and pilots of USS Enterprise are ready to get out there and hit Tojo once more. However, something dark and dangerous lies on the horizon… but before they face that storm, the U.S. Navy and Army has a delivery to make… right to Hirohito’s front porch!

U.S. Army Air Corps Lt. Colonel James Doolittle has assembled a squadron of B-25 bombers and has a message to send to Tokyo. However, only the U.S. Navy can get him close enough… and when they do, Japan will realize that they can no longer hide across the sea.

Meanwhile, the Pacific war heats up. After an indecisive clash in the Coral Sea, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto has something major up his sleeve… a huge fleet of carriers, warships and transports is headed for a tiny flyspeck in the middle of the ocean… and whoever controls Midway Atoll will control the war.

Thanks to the round the clock efforts of the Ultra crypto team, Admiral Nimitz has been forewarned about where and when the mighty Kido Butai will attack. Now he scrambles to get Enterprise, Hornet and a wounded Yorktown ready to sail and meet the Japanese fleet head on. When the two combatants meet, the results will be bloody, decisive and there can be only one victor…

Engines roar, guns blaze and bomb blasts echo across time in this titanic clash of the world’s mightiest navies!

Great dialogue, but needs an editor and a historian

All of Mr.Cook’s book have great pacing and dialogue, but his ignorance of basic points of US naval history is regrettable. Roger Mehle was a naval hero; his name was not Mealy. Flight controls are on yokes, not yolks. Nobody in the 1940’s said EMCON - they barely knew what radar was. And nobody - nobody - who knew Bill Halsey called him Bull - a nickname from the press that Halsey despised - except Douglas MacArthur. These avoidable errors keep me from giving five stars, because Mr. Cook’s book are enjoyable, readable, and written with great admiration for the Big E and the men who sailed on her. It’s just a shame that with a little care, these errors could be avoided.

Hey fellow bookworms! 📚✨ So, I just took a wild ride through "Wings of Glory: A USS Enterprise Naval Adventure Novel" by Scott Cook, and let me tell you, it was like stepping into a time machine right into the heart of World War II! 🕰️🌊

Picture this: the USS Enterprise, a bunch of fearless pilots, and a storm brewing in the Pacific that's about to rewrite history. 🌪️💥 After three epic raids on Japanese outposts, these brave souls are gearing up for another round with Tojo. But hold up, there's something dark and dangerous on the horizon, and before they face that storm, there's a special delivery to Hirohito's front porch! 🎁✈️

Enter U.S. Army Air Corps Lt. Colonel James Doolittle, a squadron of B-25 bombers, and a message Tokyo can't ignore. The collaboration between the U.S. Navy and Army is like a strategic dance, and I'm here for it! 💃🤝 And as the Pacific war heats up, a colossal Japanese fleet is heading for Midway Atoll. The suspense is real, my friends! 🚢⚓

The author, Scott Cook, throws in some historical gems and spins a tale with engines roaring, guns blazing, and bomb blasts echoing across time. It's like a blockbuster movie in book form! 🍿🎬

Now, I didn't give this book the full detective treatment, but even from my quick skim, I got hooked! 🎣 As a wannabe historical fiction author from Israel 🇮🇱, I'm soaking up inspiration from the genre's maestros, and this book was no exception. It's like a crash course in naval heroism with a side of adrenaline. 📚🚢

The community reviews are a mixed bag, like a potluck of opinions. Some folks are vibing with the pacing and dialogue, while others are putting on their historian hats and pointing out details. It's like a book club debate, and I'm loving it! 🤓📖

In a nutshell, "Wings of Glory" is a rollercoaster of history, heroism, and heart. If you're into gripping storytelling and a front-row seat to World War II drama, this book is your golden ticket. Grab a copy, dive in, and let the adventure begin! 🌟🚀

The Battle of Midway is one of the seminal events in WWII. James Doolittle's flight is one of the most heroic stories coming out of WWII. As this book focuses on both these events you would think the author would easily have a slam dunk. Wings of Glory should be an interesting and exciting account of the bravery and heroism of the men of the armed forces fighting in the Pacific theatre.

Unfortunately this book is a dud. It is simply a series of conversations between the fighting men. Conversations that are embarrassingly juvenile and peppered with an assortment of locker room jokes fit only for teenagers. It is so banal that I had to rewind several times because my mind was drifting through the narration.

And while I declare my complete ignorance of the stress pilots endure, especially in the midst of aerial bombardment and fighting, I simply cannot believe these pilots would be constantly exchanging one-liners and guffawing at each other while focusing on the target and dropping 1000+ pound bombs.

This book does not do justice to the bravery and accomplishments of the armed forces during WWII. This is the first and last of Scott Cook's books I will purchase.

Historically accurate.

That time in American history should never be forgotten or glossed over. Had these brave men and, in some cases, boys not answered the call this world would be in worse shape than it already is. The US Pacific fleet rose from the ashes of Dec, 7 1941 and crushed the Imperial Japanese armed forces at a terribly high cost. The USS Enterprise keeps rising and building on the legacy of the Enterprise name. Even now a new Enterprise is under construction ai NNSDC, VA. Enterprise ushered in the time of Nuclear powered Aircraft Carriers and was the only one of her class. The WWII Big ‘E’ was a formidable ship with a crew to match, both brown shoe and black shoe.

At the 50% point in the book the Big “E” is enroute with the fleet to the Battle of Midway. I can usually take small errors in a novel but this one has Admiral Spruance addressing the entire crew over the 1MC that Ultra has intercepted a message about the four IKN carriers….

At no point in the war was Ultra discussed beyond a small circle of staff. To make that mistake made the entire book unreadable.

the story continues: Doolittle raid and Midway

Scott Cook writes great historical fiction. His template is outstanding on its own, but the life he gives his characters, interacting with known participants and the dialogue is the best. Hard to tell fiction from fact.
Highly recommend

A readable reminder

This is a unique take for me on the Battle of Midway. I have read most of the nonfiction book, kept up with the Battle of Midway Roundtable, my father knew some of the participants. For those with similar backgrounds you know the story and watch how it is played out. A few minor errors, but overall a good refresher.

Another account of the Battle of Midway

First I would not have liked to be on a torpedo bomber or a submarine with torpedoes that constantly malfunctioned! We as a nation can never honor enough the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by our service men and women heroes!

good book

Scott Cook details the Battle of Midway. The characters we’ve met before take us thru the fantastic events of the brutal day when many from both the US and Japan died. A decisive battle for WWII

History Revealed

Another great read by Scott Cook. WWII Naval air and sea action in a narrative story brings it to life. But the history lives
on and the debt can never be paid.

Pretty darn good book.

A familiar tale, fictionalized and well told. Author would benefit from better editing. I.e., canon is not cannon. Bad editing can be insufferable.
