When night falls, the predators come out to hunt. . .
With her last case closed, Special Agent Ricki James is hoping for a break from chasing killers. So when she's assigned to look into a hiking accident in the national park off the coast of Maine, it sounds like a good way to spend a few days doing routine investigative work and ease back into everyday life where murder isn't at the center. A life that includes a mountain of reports to complete, and planning her upcoming wedding.
But when she arrives at the park, she is told the young couple found at the base of the cliff didn’t slip on the trail and fall on their own, but were stabbed to death and then tossed over the rocky ledge. And they are not the only victims vacationing in a park to die from knife wounds.
That disturbing discovery has Ricki following a string of murders, chasing a killer who leaves taunting messages and no solid clues. When a ranger working with Ricki is murdered, the stakes grow even higher as Ricki finally makes headway in tracking down a killer. But the madman is leading her back to his home ground, where he's set a trap. And now hot on his trail, Ricki is about to step right in it.
Terrific! What a great storyline! Once anyone begins to read this book, it is hard to set it aside, even as midnight strikes. One of the many talents of this author is to get a reader into the story on page one. Events held my attention, interaction in conversations made me laugh out loud, and the mystery stayed in focus all the way until the end. Ricki and her talents as an investigator for the National Park Service, is amazing. Her partner in life and work, Clay, gives her balance as she keeps her son uppermost in her mind, gets involved in nationwide investigations and remembers her confidants at all times. I love these Special Agent stories and look forward to more. Thanks for a great read.
"When Night Falls" may be one of Agent Ricki James's most difficult cases. A murder occurs in Maine, but soon she discovers that the trail leads to murders that have happened across the country. As she crisscrosses the United States, innocent victims become more numerous. Notes left for her taunt her abilities as a hunter that must seek her prey.
Once again, Chandler provides a page-turner in his narrative. Some, but not all of the characters from previous episodes make an appearance and come to her aid. Don't expect to pick this book up at night and put it down before you finish reading it. You may have to catch up on your sleep at another time.
I really wonder just how you weave all of this together and come up with an entertaining mystery. Did you learn that talent or was it 'always there' ?? Regardless, I am enjoying your Ricki James books !!
I had one half of the puzzle figured out but was stunned by the other half. I had to 'go back' and re-read a couple of pages to see how Ricki developed a clue .
I'll keep reading as long as you keep writing (I can't see you running out of National Parks nor new characters for you to add to your stories) !! The real challenge now is to keep coming up with New Plots !! So far you're doing great !!!
Would have been four stars without all the errors. Great story, felt we were following Ricki across the country. But, yes, the big but, too many formatting and continuity errors.
I really liked the variety of parks in this book. Ricki normally is only at one park per book but we got more this time. I like the information about parks I’ve never gotten to see. I really want to go to Acadia now.
I really enjoy this series. I like the tough and strong character of Ricki, yet she is still feminine. The dynamic between her, Clay, and Anchorman is intriguing.
Love this series. I enjoyed When Night Falls. It was nice to meet some new characters. Love the twist and turns and I'm looking forward to the next book.
Still love this series, 10 books into it. The story craft gets better and better as the series continues. I really hope the series goes beyond 12 books!
I love this series for the characters and the scenic locations where they are always set. The author continues to keep me engaged and keeps the characters true to who they are and who I love. Always a quick read and I keep my calendar set for the next release date in the series. If you like strong female LEOs with cases set in our great National Parks, give this series a try.
