Rushlight is a look into the future ... a frightening place where man struggles to survive a ruined world. A privileged few live in a secure biosphere in the heart of the old city, a wasteland that decays around them; they’re safe from the elements, but trapped in their carefully appointed fortress. The rest of the survivors of the Great Decline have been driven underground to eke out an existence in the subway tunnels, where tribes have formed around the labors that barely keep them alive.

A young woman, a scavenger looking for food, braves the topside and is taken prisoner. Her fate, like many before her, is to serve as a slave for the inhabitants of the Complex. But her capture might be the spark of rebellion the underground tribes have needed to rise against their tormentors. Rushlight is a tale of mankind in the turbulent future, a story of survival at the very limits of our existence.

L.R. RYAN’S RUSHLIGHT takes us into a dystopian nightmare, a life and death struggle between the Haves and Have-Nots of the planet Earth. The landscape is all too familiar, a place we’ve all visited in dreams. Earth lay in ruin, reduced to rubble from catastrophes, perhaps, too horrible to mention. The Have-Nots live in subway tunnels and their major concern is survival. The Haves are protected by biospheres and are true to form: shallow, proud, brutal, selfish, and dishonest.

The dichotomy between the futuristic privileges of the Haves and the medieval existence of the Have-Nots is so wide that both groups agree on only one thing⎯existence is a kill-or-be-killed proposition. While a stalemate of this magnitude might go on forever, in this story, nature’s entropy comes into play and changes the definition of “need,” for the Haves. Meantime, the Have-Nots are rising like a phoenix from the ashes as they respond to the intrinsic call of Community that lives at their core.

Ryan is a natural writer and nothing he writes is forced or clumsy. Descriptions of scenes are detailed, yet dispassionate, which gives him a journalistic vibe. It will be interesting to see how the author develops this dystopian theme. He has left himself plenty of room for character and plot development in future volumes. I look forward to forthcoming books in this series and hope the author can assist the poor, bedraggled characters of this dystopian world in their search for equity and peace.

Rushlight is a bold, gritty look at one future of a splintered mankind; where the "haves" live in a biosphere above ground, while the "have-nots" are forced to eke out an existence in the abandoned subway tunnels.

Well-written and gripping from the outset with fast, hard-hitting chapters that grab your attention and don't relent throughout the first part.

There are minor typos in the book, but I'm sure with some polish, the author will remedy them before getting too far ahead of himself.

I'm already a fan of this author, and I hope that he is hard at work chiseling out Part 2.

This is a prime example of the apocalyptic/dystopian tale that I really enjoy. Two classes of people.... one, the remnants of civilization doing what they can to survive in the ruins of the old world. The other... those who have shut themselves within a world that leaves you wondering if it is any better than the wastes outside.

I am really looking forward to reading more from this author and can't wait to get back to the world of Rushlight!
