Lainie’s dramatic secret is revealed (if you didn’t see the anime) and it could imperil pretty much the entire kingdom. Which is quickly dealt with by sending her into exile with Anis and crew, just in time for Euphie to get consumed by jealousy and deal out an academic lecture.

Phew, it feels like ages since a volume of this was out and it really would have been nice to get a summary rather than just launching straight into the midst of it all, but when I like the content this much I’ll let it slide a little.

I do think this first part heads into the weeds a tidge with its incredibly lengthy over-explaining of Lainie’s condition, but I’d rather have too much than too little and it does balance itself somewhat by having lots of Anis and Tilty being ridiculous.

Frankly, this development with Lainie might be the smartest thing they could have done as she goes from kind of a menace to a pitiable creature pretty quickly. She’s really a victim of her genetics and less responsible for what happened than it first appeared.

She’s not the most engaging, but her relationship with Anis’ maid is fun enough and she brings a different dimension to things once she gets going, adding a bit more friction to the homestead. It might be out of left field, but it’s a more tended field than we usually see in stories like this.

But, honestly, it’s Tilty who’s the superstar of this volume. Her very chummy deconstruction of Lainie’s issues with Anis by her side gives Euphie entirely too many feelings of being ill-equipped to be of use to Anis. And Tilty and Anis get along really well and and and…

Tilty sees this for what it is and Euphie is forced to reckon with the idea that she just might be experiencing jealousy instead of nebulous educational inadequacy. Their frank conversation really gets to the heart of both of them and that moment between our leads afterward? Oh yes, that’ll do.

We end midway through an arc that sees Anis summoned by the Ministry of the Arcane, ostensibly to give a lecture about the dragon parts they acquired, but it’s really an excuse for them to judge the heck out of her and confiscate her research.

Wisely, this turns out to be an opportunity for Euphie to do more than usual, as Anis has basically given up as far as dealing with the ministry is concerned. Since she’s sidelined for a chunk of the book, it’s a good reminder that Euphie is just as important a character as Anis.

Euphie just nails that lecture and has done her homework, prepping responses for what is clearly a massive set-up. It all goes surprisingly well for a change. Until it’s revealed who orchestrated the set-up and why.

Even if the rising action is constrained to the back of the volume, it’s really great rising action. What seemed like a rather hostile act quickly turns out to have been a VERY hostile act and there’s lots of imperilment and Tilty really, really getting mad.

It’s a good note to go out on because I’d really like to read the rest of that pretty much now and it’ll be a bit before I’m so fortunate. Always leave them wanting more.

Overall, still a strong series. It is really into its Lainie stuff and does go on a bit about it, but it beats leaving the audience completely befuddled as to why or how this state of affairs came to be. If you’re going to make something up, this is how you do it. Once Euphie gets more to do it becomes even better.

4.5 stars - a few clunkers in the dialogue department and a long walk with Lainie don’t detract from a back half that kills it and some excellent character development.

It was… fine….. I have to confess I am falling out of love with this series. The “and suddenly, vampires!” plot twist is really testing me.
