Unfortunately, Sticky the Cat passed away from cancer this week. The author generously put this book as free on Amazon. I read it since I've followed the Sticky story.

Reading this book made me ruminate on a recurring theme in this book: fame. Chuck Hawley had fame as a model in Japan. He experienced a different sort of fame in middle age when he saved a kitten glued to the road. Chuck harnessed the attention he received into a charity with the message to be kind to others.

Around the time I got my first cat, the huge Grumpy Cat phenomenon hit. I was entranced by my first feline Eva so I followed Grumpy Cat. I also watched Cole and Marmalade videos to learn how to introduce Eva to our new cat Lily.

Inevitably, nature does what it does and my Eva, Cole and Grumpy Cat all passed on to cat heaven. This is the way of things, but when a franchise is built around a cat - like Grumpy - it can crumble an entire business enterprise. For Cole, whose owner Cat Man Chris has made cat rescue his life mission, the Cole and Marmalade franchise was able to move forward albeit sadly without Cole. I'm sure since Sticky's mission was also charitable, Sticky's influence will also continue. I go on without my Eva but I still miss her.

Chuck writes a lot about the attention he received after the Sticky story went viral. Sometimes, it was welcome, often it felt intrusive, more often it just felt odd to Chuck. I think what Chuck experienced is people's need for connection. Since Chuck is connected to cats he felt safe for alienated pet loving people to reach out to. There is nothing more innocent in this world than a kitten. A man who loves kittens, whether it's Jackson Galaxy, Cat Man Chris or Chuck Hawley is going to seem approachable and non threatening. I'm glad that Chuck is using his fame to promote good.

I'm rating this book 5 stars because I love cats and believe in kindness. I also enjoyed Chris' backstory and the love he has for his children, wife and late grandmother. I appreciate the honesty and everyman quality of his story. He shows that everyone can do good in their lives.
