--Winner of the 2024 Elmer Kelton Award (Best Novel Set in West Texas)

Javier Espinoza manages an eclectic young rock band short on money to record their debut album. When it becomes obvious they are spinning their wheels playing Texas dive bars, a dangerous idea takes hold: they could smuggle migrants across the border for cash.

Javier knows a thing or two about it. He made his own perilous journey from a farm in Coahuila to the United States at age eleven, surviving brutal coyotes and dodging authorities. While he and the four bandmates try to bring their plan to life, everything Javier tried to forget about his past comes rolling back in on the wild desert wind.

Armed only with a ramshackle tour bus and an alibi, they are soon plunged into the heart of Juárez, where the harsh realities of human trafficking, impassive border agents, and ruthless cartels are waiting.
