What I expected from the Manga version of the Mandalorian is great artwork and detailed fight scenes. I did not think that the book would only cover the first episode of the Mandalorian. It is definitely done well and very detailed. I am not sure they are going to do a book per episode every time, but I am looking forward to it
3.5 stars. I really enjoy the story of The Mandalorian so this one gets boosted on that alone. The art in this one is a bit more cartoonish and I didn’t mind that since I’ve already read the western comics adaptation of this before. All that being said, I enjoyed this read. The only issue I would have with this one would be that it was a very quick read overall.
This manga is a essentially just a copy/paste version of the show and I love it!! I like seeing how The Mandalorian was transferred to the manga style and I can hear and picture everything perfectly because I remember the show. The manga didn't leave anything out and I appreciate that it released.
This just fuels my obsession for The Mandalorian and Pedro Pascal.
This is my review of the entire collection (all 4 volumes)
I was too impatient to wait for the English translations of vols 3 and 4, so I managed to get the original Japanese books straight from Japan. The only problem is that they are not on goodreads yet, so I just added the read dates to this volume accordingly.
This entire collection is phenomenal. It's a beautiful adaptation of the first season of the mandalorian show. It blows the marvel adaptation out of the water.
The artwork is absolutely stunning, the pacing of the story is brilliantly done. It doesn't add anything new, but it doesn't need to, it retells the story beat for beat beautifully.
And what I enjoyed the most is that while I could have taken longer to read this and actually fully translated the Japanese, I really didn't need to as I could still follow and appreciate the story without, especially as the show is such a silent cowboy show anyway.
I love Star Wars manga and I adore this series especially, I will never get over how gorgeous the art is. I'm so glad I have this I'm my collection.
Wow, this was my first time diving into Manga, and as a Star Wars fan, it was surprisingly enjoyable! The artwork blew me away, and it brought a whole new dimension to the story. I just wished there were more episodes in the book because I was really into it and didn't want it to end.
Big thanks for sending an Advanced Reader Copy – it was a real treat!

Not much to hate here. So I pick this book as a giveaway for the Baltimore City Summer reading initiative. Didn't expect much especially because I often do not like adaptations of movies or TV series in graphic novels/comics. To my surprise this manga style book really just rehashes the first few magnificent episodes of the hit Mandalorian tv series. This was not a bad thing since while reading this book I found myself reminiscing about how good that first season of the very first live action Star Wars tv series. The artwork was nice and the character designs closely resemble the concept art that is shown during the end credits of the show. The only with the artwork is that it is not in color. This is to be expected since this book was done in the manga style. That is the most hilarious part about this book is the fact that I wouldn't exactly say this is a manga. It reads from right to left like a manga style comic but the story itself has kind of a western storytelling flow to it. For those not familiar with the story about the Mandalorian, this book does a great job in getting the reader familiar with the universe. This may still require that new readers come in with prior knowledge of at least the original Star Wars movie trilogy. The Mandalorian is basically a western style tale set in space about a lone bounty hunter trying to make a living in the cut throat underworld of the Star Wars galaxy. We catch up with our hero, know only as Mando, who is on the hunt for an elusive criminal. After the first mission goes well our hero receives a rather interesting job from a high profile client who request the Mando's expertise on behalf of the former Galactic Empire, the main antagonists from the original Star Wars movies. In short the Mandalorian takes the job and is surprise to find out that his quarry is just a child and even more shocking maybe a "Force" that could threaten the fragile peace that is currently thriving in the galaxy. This is just a short plot description of what this book is about. I had a lot of fun reading this because I just thought that show was just so well done. Truthfully you can just go watch the series but these manga novelizations of the book could be great collectors items for any fan. Not a bad gateway into reading Star Wars in comics. Here are few Star Wars comics series I 'd recommend fans read: Star Wars: Vader Down, Star Wars, Vol. 1: Skywalker Strikes, Star Wars: Kanan, Vol. 1: The Last Padawan-Star Wars: Kanan, Vol. 2: First Blood, Star Wars: Legacy, Volume 1: Broken-Star Wars: Legacy, Volume 11: War.
This manga covers the first episode of The Mandalorian television show, and not any new adventures with Mando and The Child. However, I still think it’s worth your while, even if you’ve seen the show more times than you can count. There’s something remarkable about seeing this well-loved show play out on page in Yusuke Osawa’s incredible illustrations. While the television show moves quickly from scene to scene, the manga allows you to sit in every action scene, absorb each piece of dialogue, and see each character up close.
My favorite scene in the manga was the first cantina interaction between Mando and Greef Karga. There is so much detail in this interaction that I didn’t pick up on before reading this manga: the sheer number of tracking fobs and pucks, the imperious stares from onlookers, and Mando’s immediate hesitation at taking Imperial credits. Yusuke Osawa’s illustrations and dialogue portray this cantina scene so well, which made it a joy to read. Throughout the book, I found myself picking up on new pieces of the setting and remarking on the well-drawn details of favorite bits – such as rotisserie kowakian monkey-lizard. Even seemingly simple scenes come alive as Yusuke Osawa’s art breathes new life into this Star Wars classic.
This book is an excellent read for any Star Wars fan, even those new to manga. The end of the book features an instructional page explaining how to read manga. Between those instructions and Yusuke Osawa’s fluid storytelling, this book makes manga easy for readers. This book is also appropriate for younger readers; if they’re old enough that you would feel comfortable showing them The Mandalorian on Disney+, then this book would be a great introduction to Star Wars, The Mandalorian, or manga in general.

Thanks to Viz Media for a review copy of the manga! All thoughts are my own.
This manga faithfully reproduces the first couple of episode of The Mandalorian, a Star Wars series that manages to have almost nothing to do with the Skywalker saga (no small accomplishment) and develops a new and interesting mythology within the Star Wars universe. The graphic novel's style is mostly faithful to the television series, with occasional bits of manga-style thrown in.
Unfortunately, this manga is like many other manga, i.e. it is an almost literal translation of the source material. I've read a few manga that were exactly the same as the anime series they were based on (or on which they were based). Consequently, I felt that either reading the manga or watching the anime was sufficient to get what the narrative offered. Having watched the first series of The Mandalorian three times (it is that good), I don't feel any need to keep reading this manga adaptation.
Mildly recommended--if you've seen the series, you've seen all the best bits. But the series is excellent, so if you haven't, the manga is sure to entertain.
So, since streaming service exclusives aren't shows I end up seeing these days, this is about the only way I get to see what everyone is so hyped up about.
I... guess I see what the big deal is. Thing is, I wasn't really a huge Star Wars fan in the first place, so this feels like more of the same. That same is GOOD, of course, but it's like how, when I thought about it, I don't really have a "favourite" Star Wars movie, though I've seen most of them.
Nothing terribly unpredictable in this volume, since I already know the general setup through internet osmosis, and the biggest "spoiler" is right on the cover. The art is very nice, and I assume the story is accurate. Can't say a lot else, other than it definitely feels like a Star Wars title.
Recommended for fans who also can't get the streaming service exclusives. :/
The Mandalorian turns in an easy bounty and asks for a more challenging job. He is sent to retrieve a person in hiding on Arvala-7. The payout is large and they want the target alive.
This is extremely close to the streaming series. The illustrator just adapted it to manga form, kept the same text, and condensed some of the action. This goes from the intro to Mando recovering the child on Arvala-7, not leaving yet. It was a super quick read as the action is high and dialogue is quick and minimal. This would be a good way to refresh your memory before watching the new season.
Notes on content: Language: None Sexual content: None Violence: There are a couple battles and it is assumed some are killed, but that isn't really shown. Ethnic diversity: Alien species and humans with a variety of skin tones. LGBTQ+ content: None specified Other: The main character is a bounty hunter. It isn't stated what the people he captures have done.
Okay! Where the Marvel comic adaptation fell short, the Manga adaptation is much more fun. I will warn readers though, this first volume only covers the first episode of the live-action series. That being said, it means the story can breathe a little. This Manga captures the spirit of the show much better than the comic version. The artwork is fantastic. In fact, the first few pages of my copy are in color, but even in black and white, this looks superb. Drawback? The English version of this came out in September of 2023, and Vol. 2 won't come out until July 2024. Assuming each subsequent volume will only cover one episode, I doubt I will be around by the time they finish this series, lol.
Beautiful lineart. The suspense is strong and many dialogue sequences feel important and essential. Started to lose steam after chapter 2, even though I really wanted to like this. Too much firepower, action sequences for me. I might not be the target demographic and that's okay. I adored the epilogue section detailing the Razor Crest, Amban sniper rifle, IB-94 Blaster, and gunk droid. Appealing and informative. I have not seen the show, so I cannot attest to the depiction accuracy.
Overall, good enough start to a series but did not entice me to read the second volume.
I really enjoy watching this show, especially because of Baby Yoda who I find incredibly cute compared to the original Yoda. I always made sure to catch it on Disney Plus every Thursday when it was airing. The show is recommended for ages 12 and up, mainly middle school students. The themes explored in this show include the importance of having someone who loves and supports us, as well as the idea that we should always be there for those we care about.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian: The Manga, Vol. 1 adapted by Yusuke Osawa.
This book covers The Mandalorian Season 1, episodes 1-4.
I enjoyed this one a lot. I had fun reading through these first four episodes of Season 1. The curb appeal is great and the storyboarding is also good.
Looking forward to more of these. US version of Volume 2 is listed as dropping in May 2024.
This manga adapts the first four episodes of The Mandalorian into Japanese graphic novel form. It carries the story over very well while giving it a unique style as you'd expect in a manga. The art style captures the look of the galaxy far, far away with a nice twist, making it both recognizable and unique.
If you're a fan of The Mandalorian and manga, you should definitely consider picking up this collection.
One of the better print adaptations of the Disney+ Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. Volume 1 is season 1, episode 1. The artist is true to the characters - both Mando and Grogu, Kuill, Greef Karga, are true to form. The client and dr Pershing seen much kinder in Manga form, but this is volume 1 so we’ll see.
I would recommend this version of print media to all Mandalorian fans. Looking forward to future volumes.
Quick impressions: Fans of the series may consider reading this. It may work too for fans of newer Star Wars works. For libraries, if they have manga collections, and especially other Star Wars adaptations, they may want to acquire this. For my library, I would consider it an optional purchase. As a reader, this was nice, a bit of fun, but not terribly memorable. I did like it.
This looks like this is going to be a very thorough adaptation of the series. I'm not sure if it includes every line word for word, but it definitely seems to have many of them, and this entire volume just adapts episode one. On one hand, that means that little, if anything, is going to get skipped. On the other, that means nothing new will be added, either. The art is fantastic, though, and not just because it's true to the characters. There's some really breathtaking panels in this volume.
