Virat Kohli, the undisputed monarch of the cricket world today, is no stranger to loss. His biggest support both on and off the field-his father Prem Kohli-succumbed to a cerebral stroke when Virat was only 18 years old. In a fitting tribute that would've made his father proud, Virat returned to the field to continue an innings just a few hours after his father passed away. In Driven, Vijay Lokapally recounts happier times in the journey of Virat's rapid rise to international stardom-an account punctuated with little-known stories from fellow players, coaches, and intimates.
Virat is already the recipient of countless accolades including the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri, India's highest sporting honour-Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, the title of BCCI's 'International Cricketer of the Year' as well as the ICC's 'ODI Cricketer of the Decade'. But for him, it's not about the fame or the money, or the roar of the crowds. Few know of his altruistic nature and his dedication to numerous charities for underprivileged children. What has not escaped the public eye though, is how this wizard of the willow wears his heavy mantle with such insouciant ease.
In this revised and updated World Cup edition, readers can now delve deeper into Virat Kohli's cricketing journey with two new chapters, including one dedicated to his performance in the World Cups. Additionally, this edition features new images that offer a visual insight into his career, and an entertaining statistics section that provides fascinating cricketing statistics and records.
Vijay Lokapally has written on cricket for more than three decades. He is a widely travelled cricket scribe with the distinction of having reported extensively on the game from practically every international venue. Working since 1986 with The Hindu, a respected National newspaper, Lokapally is acknowledged for his insightful views on the game. He covered his first Test in 1981 as a freelancer and has the distinction of covering six limited-over World Cups for The Hindu and Sportstar. His enviable access to cricketers, past and present, gives Lokapally a ring-side view of the game in India. It reflects in his incisive writing on all formats of the game. Lokapally is acknowledged for his contribution in Olympic sports, too. He has written extensively on Indian hockey and football. He is also a prolific film and food critic. His articles on the subjects in The Hindu’s ‘Metro Plus’ are widely read and cherished. Driven is the third book by Lokapally. He has previously written the Virender Sehwag Story and co-authored ‘The Houseful’, an assemble of Indian films. His later books were the World Cup Worriors, The Hitman: The Rohit Sharma Story and Speed Merchants: The Story of Indian Pace Bowling. He lives in Delhi with wife Sunanda and son Akshay.
I am an unabashed fan of Virat Kohli and that is what drove me to pick up this biography of his. A lot of people, including me, would believe that the time is not ripe for an ode to Kohli, however special a talent he may be. And this book does nothing to prove them wrong.
“Driven…” is a product of the book-making industry’s desire of cashing on the immense popularity that Virat enjoys at the moment. The author, Vijay Lokapally, knowing the fickle nature of form and adulation in the game of cricket, perhaps thought it wasn’t advisable to wait for his career to become even a more regaling story.
However, the lack of years in Kohli’s success is not what makes this book rather insufferable. It is the hasty manner in which Lokapally pieces together anecdotes and tales from the very public life of Kohli. It doesn’t help that even a lot of seemingly lesser-known stories of Kohli’s young days have been floating around on social media for some time.
There is no doubt that, like most reasonably successful sportspersons, Kohli’s life has many moments which can be a source of inspiration for everyone. However, the author picks them up and harps on them repeatedly, almost rendering them soporific. The incident involving him coming out in a game right after his father’s death, though extremely touching, is mentioned at least eight times in the book in a desperate bid to rouse emotion in the reader. The writing is rather dull with over two thirds of the text being quotes from people in Kohli’s life - barely a couple of whom can actually boast of knowing Kohli outside the cricket field.
The flow of the book is so preposterous that there were times I thought the pages were torn and bound together in incorrect order. The anecdotes jump back in forth in time with such frequency it makes you work extremely hard to connect the dots. Even in the last chapter, just when the reader thinks this is a final piece on what defines Kohli and what the future holds, the author skips abruptly to an old story recounted by a fellow player and then wallows in nostalgia for nearly two pages before stuttering to a meek finish to the story.
In all, a totally avoidable piece of writing. For the persona, the sportsperson that Kohli is, I sincerely hope that there is someone more capable and carrying much better intent to pen his story when he walks into the sunset.
Super disappointed with this book which proves that those who write good articles may not necessarily write good full length books. The only thing I'll remember about this book is that hilariously cute photograph where Ashish Nehra is presenting an award to Virat Kohli when he was a Kid. The only insights the book provides are from Virat's coach Raj Kumar to whom Virat even presented a Skoda Rapid on Teacher's Day.
Virat definitely deserves a better biography and I think only he can do justice to himself, when he retires which I hope is at least 2 more world cups away. There were no insights into what goes into his mind. The least the author could have done is make Virat speak a few words at least. There's nothing in this book which I didn't know already. Don't waste your time on this one, rather watch reruns of his numerous epic innings on YouTube. 2/5
If the cricket enthusiasts world over particularly Indians have had the faintest of scepticism regarding future prospects of Indian cricket, Vijay Lokapally dusts it off with an exclusive insight on the phenomenon called Virat Kohli in his authentic offering to cricket book lovers. Titled, Driven: The Virat Kohli Story, the book thrives on the statistical facts and figures to justify the selection of the batting mainstay in the Indian cricket team. It is not an uncommon sight in Indian cricketing circles and amongst enthusiasts of the game in India to dwell on the prospects of discovering the next individual batting superstar with the powers of a colossal figure, the following of the myriad and more relevantly possessing unmatched elegance in strokeplay and dominance over bowlers world over. This common phenomenon occurred when Sunil Gavaskar retired from international cricket and queries in anticipation over his successor gained prominence and momentum in Indian media. To the delight of the masses, Sachin Tendulkar readily filled the void created by the senior little master's retirement. It is no surprise that when Sachin Tendulkar decided to retire from all forms of the game in 2013, the world took notice of the hoopla surrounding the inclusion of a young Virat Kohli in different sections of social and print media. The leverage of leading the Under-19 team to a World Cup win played a crucial role in Kohli making it to the Indian national team. Virat Kohli since, has strengthened his stronghold on a place in the Indian playing eleven in all formats of the game. He has exhibited tremendous level of consistency over the past few years, and concurrently grown in stature as the premier batsman of the world. Given his mental strength and super human batting prowess, it was no less obvious that he would don the mantle of Indian captaincy in years to come. The author Vijay Lokapally has left no stone unturned in his fruitful effort of throwing light on Virat Kohli's early years, exploits as a young boy at junior level, the camaraderie with fellow players, the liking for his first coach and trainer, in addition to the phase of his cricketing life when he was considered ready to be blooded in Tests. The book also includes humorously compiled light hearted occasions experienced by the cricketer in the Indian dressing room as a young mischievous lad. The narration does live up to the expectations of cricket book enthusiasts with several timely intrusions in the form of surprising facts, staggering numbers, inspiring and touching stories of human emotions such as the liberation of his true character from the confinement of self doubting introspections (an evolution in his cricketing repertoire evidently observed and sensed from his body language and abundant confidence accompanied by agility and electrifying presence on the field), young Virat's exhibition of grit and determination to emerge from personal losses and many similar instances of bold vigour.
The art in the book lies at the heart of the compilation, with the author showcasing the wider aspects of the charismatic cricketer's batting prowess and inspiring captaincy through skillful, clever selection of words and phrases in describing the breathtaking defining moments of Kohli's career such as his unanimous selection as Indian team's captain in all formats, his emergence as a complete Test batsman with enormous, mind blowing success against Australia in Australia, his elevation to the stature of an undisputed modern day cricketing great by critics and experts alike, and his rise to popularity as a youth icon. The book delivers the knockout punch to the readers dedicating fair amount of writing space to the legendary batting accomplishments of Indian captain in a very short stint on the international arena. The author epitomizes the batting mainstay's evident inherent trait of sheer ruthlessness and unforgiving dominance over world class bowlers, while sharing inputs from yesteryear greats and those of his own regarding the Indian batsman's exquisite performances against quality teams with formidable pace and spin bowling attack. The book also presents to the cricket book lovers, a couple of rare instances of Virat Kohli's failures with his dismal performances in Tests against England in England taking centrestage with every page flip, providing a healthy scope for a few eyebrows to be raised regarding the flaws in his batting technique. However unyielding may Virat Kohli apparently appear to the bowlers' plight world over while at the crease; the champion bat has successfully made a good everlasting impression on the heart and mind of keen followers of the game.
The sport entertainer in Virat Kohli has assured Indian cricket enthusiasts of ensured unlimited joy and entertainment. What am I talking about? or rather what is the author taking his stance on? The Indian Premier League. IPL also finds its fair share of limelight in the beautifully compiled biography on one of the most exciting and flamboyant bat of modern era, the world of cricket and sport enthusiasts have witnessed and will continue to witness for a few more years to come. An interesting fact and feature of Virat Kohli's IPL stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore is that his batting took a longer time to flourish compared to the high standards he has set of his own in One Day Internationals and Tests.
The book also draws a considerable amount of comparison between Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. Though the instances emphasizing and highlighting the comparison are not forthright. In my opinion, the author Vijay Lokapally deserves to be credited for adopting a diplomatic stance on the matter, keeping his narration well confined to acceptable level of integrity and sportmanship. A book enthusiast driven by the desire to unlock the hidden persona of a sport character whose performance driven international cricket career has drawn many eyeballs on his whereabouts and exploits could without hesitation pick Driven: The Virat Kohli Story for a read. The complex feature of the narrative lies in its simplicity and the author's vast writing experience has lent an invaluable element of clarity and fluency to the matter presented in the compilation for book enthusiasts. Driven: The Virat Kohli Story forms an excellent read inclusive of exquisite photogenic visuals in the form of snapshots picturing Virat Kohli with Indian cricket team on several occasions and covering many other memorable moments common to Virat Kohli, Indian cricket team, the Indian cricket coaching staff, and Indian cricket fans world over. The readers who pick this one for a read can also look forward to Ravi Shastri's foreword of four pages. Driven: The Virat Kohli Story, gets me sufficiently driven to help itself on its course to drive away with 4 valuable points from the available pool of my rating capabilities. Read the biography if you're an avid book lover. Don't miss it if you like reading phases of cricket. Cheers.
Disappointing. I was quite excited about reading Virat Kohli's biography and that too by a respected journalist. I did not get much insight apart what was available in public domain like press conferences, interviews and commercial shows. The author had done good literature review but lacked in primary research. Moreover, editing could have been better (E.g. There were only four Tests in Australia tour in 2014-15 not five.) The stories (in fact droning match reports) also get repeated again and again. I finished it just because it is a small 200 paged book and I was hoping for exciting stuff at the end. Eventually, I was disappointed.
He remembered what Raj Kumar had drilled into his mind, ‘Treat every match as the career-deciding match.’
- He was a compulsive competitor, who did not believe in conceding an inch. His dedication was unmatched – spending long hours in the nets under the scorching sun, only to hone a particular shot and work on his technique. He showed early promise that developed into a steely resolve to be the best.
- Brash. Arrogant. Undisciplined. An upstart. These were some of the words used to describe Virat. His aggression on the field, looking the opposition in the eye, and his readiness for a confrontation, marked Virat as the man to watch on the field. He worked to gain attention. He enjoyed the scrutiny, right from his formative years in the game that he dearly loved. At no point in his career has Virat shown disrespect to the game or the seniors. However, he is not the one to accept things lying down. ‘You give me. I give it back,’ is his philosophy, simple and effective.
- Virat’s philosophy of cricket came to the fore when he remarked, ‘Wins and losses are part of this game. We didn’t play for a draw. We played for a win. We lost. No problem. If we had won, the questions would have been different, the answers would have been different. We have to maintain this kind of an approach if we have to win abroad. If we try to play for a draw, the negative approach creeps in. I’m only hurt because we didn’t cross the line when it looked pretty bright for us. But that’s the way sport goes, that’s the way Test cricket goes.’
- Comparisons with Tendulkar always irked Virat. He responded candidly to set the comparison debate to rest. ‘Honestly, I feel embarrassed. It is unfair. Sachin cannot be compared with anyone. Comparisons are not valid from my end. I have looked up to him but I want to be myself while drawing inspiration from him. He is two levels above any player. Sachin was born with talent and I had to work for it. I have been playing well for two years, while he served the nation with grace for twenty-four years. I am inspired by him though I would like to create my own path,’ Virat said in an interview to India Today.
There is a little that the reader of the book will savour. The book lacks the very thing that Virat is popular for ,"Passion" . Book is merely re construction of past events in Kohli's life. The events too are spread across the book like pieces of jigsaw puzzle. Sports biographies are meant to evoke emotion and instill confidence in its readers . This book on the contrary is bland. Author could have put in more efforts in giving insights into significant aspects of the player's career like the first 50 ,first 100 or his first interaction with his childhood hero :Sachin Tendulkar. Virat is far from being a finished product. There are still many feathers to be added in his hat. Only when he is in the sunset years of his career should a book be written .Another author could do that and justify Virat's career . But Virat's life still does present enough to be written on .In this case though Vijay Lokapally had a juicy full toss to play with . His eyes got lit but sadly he mistimed the ball got out on a duck .
Driven: The Virat Kohli story - is not the story of Virat Kohli. It is rather the story of what other famous cricketers think of him. This book is really bad as a biography. It doesn't give much information on his life. It gives information on the interviews of other cricketers (Saurav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, Vihendar Sehwag, others), and what they thought about him. The author might have collected all the news he wrote in his edited newspaper and just turned that into a story.
The book gives facts on his life of cricket and matches but gives very little information on his personal life. It was okay of giving life only about his cricket, but I guess more information must be needed, especially since the name of the book is 'The Virat Kohli Story.
I am giving this book three stars because - 1.) The research about the news and interviews was good. 2.) I learnt a bit about Virat Kohli. 3.) I appreciate the author.
Overall, this book was an 'okay' read. It is probably good for reading when you don't have anything else to do. But don't expect something great from its book.
I have always cherished reading (Auto)Biographies. This one too has made me feel great about getting to know so many things about Virat Kohli. I admire him even more. It is great that such books exists that act as a window for us to peep into the world of the people we love so much. I don't believe that disciplined people like Virat Kohli are just born with the qualities that they have. They sure do but for those who don't can still set Goals and achieve them and gain such qualities. Virat just like most of other successful people loves what he does, analyses all the intricacies and constantly believes in Kaizen (a Japanese business philosophy of continuous improvement of working practices, personal efficiency, etc.), sets goals both long and short term and the best part, his resolve. In case he is unable to achieve a short term goal, he then loves to punish himself with an even more tense schedule.
The book was very good and a very accurate biography on the cricket player Virat Kohli who is a former captain of the Indian cricket team and is currently playing in international cricket. The book talks about his journey to the highest level of international cricket and all the struggles and successes in between that cemented his path. Personally, the book was a very good reading level for me and actually has enhanced my vocabulary and choice of words after what Vijay Lokapally has written. I hope all cricket fans out there read this book and enjoy because it was a huge memory for me to savour. Cheers :)
I was very excited to read this book to understand what makes Virat Kohli the person and athlete he is. However, I was very disappointed to read a biography that was only an account of his matches and statistics with little to no insight into his passion and drive for the game, his learnings from playing alongside legendary players, and moments that led him to make major life decisions.
I couldn't finish the book and left it halfway. I don't recommend reading this book if you want to know more than what you have seen and heard during matches or read online.
I liked the book for it gave me insights of Virat Kohli - the current Indian cricket team captain. If you are looking for his latest achievements/accomplishments this book is not the best since its a bit dated (releases in 2016). I didn't find a lot of insights from the player himself in this book which is what I expected some of it to be, since its a book on him. Hearing from the horses mouth would have added to a better reading experience.
Vijay just collated stories from news papers and post match presentation. He didn't try to delve deep in Virat's life. We all know about his qualities, his aggression, his leadership etc. but why is he different? We know that he is the fittest cricketer on earth. But how has is managed to do so. This book doesn't answer these important questions.
If you're here for a story of the man; his life and journey - Abort Mission! This book has nothing to do with the personality; but more to do with statistics, batting techniques, and cricket jargon. I was so excited to learn about how Virat Kohli became Virat Kohli and I am still clueless. This is not a biography, just a glorified scorecard.
I think that this is a great book for me, but I think that this book might only be enjoyed and read by people that like to watch or play cricket because otherwise it might be hard to understand otherwise
We all know that Virat Kohli's life is very inspiring and his journey has not been so easy. This book is a quiet disappointment to the heroic personality of Virat Kohli, since it does not have the ability to engage the reader and also the writing is not satisfactory.
I was bewitched by the way Vijay Lokapally wrote. He gave a brief but sufficient explanation about the upcoming star of cricket, Virat Kohli!! Very well written book!!
I am personally a Birat Kohli fan and really like the way his game has been improved from last couple of years. Vijay has tried his best effort to compile Kohli’s life in a book. However, i feel that Kohli deserve more than what has been written in this book and it is too early to write a book on him. He is on a super path to become great asset in cricket world.
This is an encomium. It starts off praising Virat Kohli for being a high-spirited youngster at the age of 10 and goes on in the same tone voicing praises out of every situation the aced cricketer has ever been in.There is hardly a proper chronology in the description of the life events. Presence of minimal unknown facts also makes it evident that probably it is too early to write a biography on Virat Kohli. Quoting modern day greats to Virat's Instagram posts , this book could have focused on things more relevant. No anecdotes as well. All in all a very shallow and ordinary biography written with a limited scope. Spoilers : The statistics compiled at the end of the book is very impressive. Do go through it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Well written by the author. He did a good job composing this piece of work. The only drawback that i felt was that, most of the facts were well known about kohli. There were things those were unique at times. Overall, it was fun reading the whole of it just because of the fact that I'm a huge Kohli fan. I idolise him as an ambassador of the modern game and so anxious to read about his life. I must say that I'm almost satisfied.
It's such a good book! I really liked Virat as a player but after reading this book I love him as a player and as a person. It's not just based on his love story or success but his struggles as well. This book clearly depicts the formation of the samosa loving teen to a strict diet following man. This book is not some fan fiction fantasy but a success story. Thank you so much Mr Lokapally for such an amazing and well written book!
I am really at loss of words to describe this meticulously constructed book by vijay lokapally that lets us know every aspect of vk's life we can learn and inspire from. Yes he is a delight to watch on the field but how he reached there is a matter to emphasize on by the youth. The third chapter of the book 'boy to man' is the one that will have a impact on you the most.
