Plot ⭐️⭐️
Spice 0/5 (a few kisses and 1 very unfulfilling wedding night complete with a heavy purity culture inner monologue, no foreplay, and FMC doesn't even come - which honestly go hand in hand so I guess that checks out)
1st person POV

If you are the author or someone who really enjoyed this book... maybe skip this review because I am about to rip it to shreds. I'm normally not mean in reviews but oh my god I don't think I'll be able to rein myself in on this one... This will contain spoilers so read at your own risk.

Okay, here we go. What the actual fuck was this book? It started off strong and I was loving our FMC's (Arwen) character. She was strong, capable, and resourceful. The premise of the story started out somewhat strong: the King has recently become a widower and is in need of a wife who can carry his children to term and deliver them safely (bc of course the magic in the kingdom is dying and only having babies will kickstart it again) so he is going around the villages in his kingdom searching for powerful women. His wife died in childbirth after already having 3 miscarriages (so the math is 4 babies lost). The King is now 21 and the wife died a year ago. So yes, they started YOUNG. Once Arwen gets to the palace, that's when shit hits the fan for me. I'm going to use bullet points to hopefully keep this as short as possible.

Notes (kind of in order)
1. Arwen (18) is immature and says harsh and cruel things without thinking how it'll affect the recipient of her words (i.e. the King). Yes, she is young and this should be classified as YA so of course they're going to make stupid mistakes. But she started off so strong that it seemed like character regression and felt like a plot device to create discord between our MCs. This happens a few times where she says something, immediately regrets it, and then a few chapters later, DOES IT AGAIN. Have we ever heard of learning from our mistakes and thinking before we speak??

2. Our MMC, Drae (21), (aka the king) is not charming or funny or clever enough to offset all of his faults. To not be too repetitive, you'll get more detail on this in the coming points.

3. When Arwen is discovered as a pureblooded dragon, she theoretically would be the best choice for his babies since she would be strong enough. But the doctor said it's too risky so he (the king) should go with the 2nd best option. He does. He announces his engagement to the 2nd best woman. Arwen is understandably heartbroken because in the 2 weeks of being in his presence, she's decided she does want to be with him. The king offers her a place in the royal guard to keep her close to his chest, since she has the power to kill him and all of the dragon-people (he leads her to believe it's because she has so much potential as a warrior and it's been her dream since she was a child). She finds out a few chapters later when she tries to move on with another guard, that she has been blacklisted by the king since she is his "backup." Yes, his backup because bearing his children is actually a serious threat to the mother's life. Arwen is, again, understandably pissed that he's made it clear that if he can't have her, no one will. This "backup" bullshit goes on for too many chapters because that's how long the king and the 2nd best option (I cannot remember her name and don't care to look it up) are together.

4. Around the 75% mark, the soon-to-be-Queen is assassinated in front of Arwen and she goes ballistic because they were friends and also because she didn't stop it in time. And because she has had 3 weeks of training in the royal guard, she insists on going with the group to strike back at the queen they are at war with who killed her 🙄(again, can't even remember her name). Yes, she was a hunter for 9 years, but hunting skills do NOT translate to battle skills!!

5. During this "battle" (if you can even call it that), the author kills off the only other important female character in this book. Regina sacrifices herself because Arwen can't carry both her and another guard to safety, and Arwen has to "save herself and live." So Regina dies. Lovely.

6. Because the king once again needs a queen, Arwen is the only choice left because they sent everyone else home. Yay. So romantic. But oh no! The only recorded history of a baby between each of their lineages was born with severe deformities and only lived a few hours. So after some deliberation, they agree to let the King have mistresses to have their babies because they love each other too much and can't stand to see each other with someone else (the irony isn't lost on me). He even offers to let her sleep with the guard she tried to kiss so she could experience pregnancy and have her own children. This goes on for almost the last 25% of the book. I'm sorry but I do NOT want to read a romance that requires a man to have mistresses in order to have babies. And of course, on their wedding night (after very little foreplay and he doesn't even make her come), she realizes that she is going to be heartbroken and turn into a jealous woman (RIGHTFULLY SO) when her husband is with these other women. I think I about broke my skull rolling my eyes so fucking hard.

7. At the very end, the King rushes back to Arwen (shirtless, may I add) and says he couldn't go through with it. He'd rather have deformed babies with her or none at all. Like that's some romantic gesture or declaration of love. And his power is restored while she's pregnant so the sooner she gets preggo, the better. Of course, they end up having perfectly healthy twin girls and name them after the 2 women who died in the book. And they lived happily ever after. However, I did not.

Other notes (not in order):
8. "Now I understood why my mother pressed upon Adaline and I to keep our purity until marriage. This was an incredibly intimate thing shared between two people." I'm sorry - what the actual fuck. He didn't even make you come!!!! Also what is with this purity culture bullshit!! She goes on, "It was the most special moment of my life, giving myself fully to him, giving him something I’d saved for him alone." oh fuck right on off out of here.

9. It's a huge deal that Arwen can shift into a dragon as only the king is supposed to be able to, but we barely get a sentence dedicated to her first shift that had already happened? As if that's not a huge moment that should've been given some page-time??

10. In the very beginning, Arwen finds out that her parents weren't actually her parents and her mother had to sleep with another man in order to have her younger sister because her father was sterile. Her mother talks about how Arwen's father allowed this to happen because he knew how much she wanted kids and they remained happy and in love until his untimely death. This was the setup for the whole pregnancy conflict at the end and her mom even tells Arwen that she has a duty to the people of Embergate and needs to let the king impregnate his mistresses. It was at this point I almost DNF'd (86%) because I was so mad.

As you can tell from my review and if you read my highlights, my overall opinions of this book are WHAT THE FUCK, GO FUCK YOURSELF, and FUCK RIGHT OFF. I should have DNF'd this and will never get those 3 hours back.

Terrible writing and dialogue. Way too much slang written into the prose when the story is set in a medieval fantasy world. This book was a disappointment.

This is literally a book about the biggest “not like other girls” MC I have ever read, and a MMC who doesn’t even make her cum in the only sex scene they have.

The first 20% of this book was SOOOO GOOD and I was truly so excited because I finally had found a fantasy book that I really was starting to love, then it just suddenly went to “I don’t want to talk about fashion and girly things, I want to talk about war! Not a single girl in this room is tomboyish like I am!” And I literally wanted to rip my hair out. Dead ass, an entire chapter was her describing herself as a pick me. I can’t

The entire book also started feeling so rushed after the first half. The wedding scene was legit a small paragraph. And that was it.

It just wasn’t good.

Not just because it was bad but because it read like a poor attempt. The ideas were there (sort of)but nothing was really fully fleshed.

Not the world, not the characters, not the relationship. Nothing. It was a bunch of characters and tropes thrown together with a few other storytelling elements and bam you got a book - sort of.

“I am an idiot. I’m an idiot for liking you!”

I love this book. It gripped me from the beginning, i finished it in just a few hours. The characters were fantastic, I love Arwen. She is a strong female character, who hunts for her family. The Dragon King needs an heir, searching for woman's who can bare his child. Arwen tries to escape but she's caught and from there starts the unrevealing of secrets and burning romance between them. I can't wait for the next book. This was a great start to a new series.

Reading this was like a car crash. It was horrifying but I could not stop.

The purity culture, the one-sided agreement, the 'I am so different'- FMC,
killing off the only capable female soldier, the whole backup for breeding situation and the missing chemistry, the fact that in the one sex scene he could not be bothered to make her come?

It's a HELL NO for me

Subscribed to Kindle Unlimited today and this was one of the first books recommended to me based on my last purchases... Not sure how much faith I have in Amazon recs now...

Right off the bat, I knew I probably wasn't going to love the writing style. It felt very Wattpad-y... I think that's the word I'm looking for. It just wasn't great writing.

The storyline is what pulled me in - The dragon king is looking for a wife and the only requirement is that the woman must have enough magic to produce an heir. Enter Arwen who believes herself to be the average girl with little to no power. Lo and behold, this isn't the case and she is chosen to be a potential wife for the king. I originally thought of The Selection series in a fantasy world. This was not the case. At all.

I still managed to finish this book, so it was still an okay book, but nothing special. The plotline was all over the place and while I like unpredictable books, this just seemed unorganized. One thing would be said and then it would all change in the next chapter. It just got tiring after a while.

Our love interests - Arwen and Drae - were cute, but again, nothing special. They had chemistry, but it still didn't feel right. It was just a whole lot of back and forth. Not really my cup of tea. Arwen was a strong MC and I liked her a lot, but Drae was a bit bland. ALSO, somehow I was expecting some spice in here. Nope. This could honestly be categorized as Young Adult - They have a couple of kiss scenes and a boring sex scene with minimal details.

AND The only character that I truly liked was killed off half way through so that was fucking amazing.

2/5 stars.

3.35/5 ⭐

A lot has happened in 358 pages so I can say for sure that this is packed with action. In each chapter something is going on and somehow you don't get bored.

The premise is very interesting, the magic system too, the story I actually enjoyed but even so, I feel like it still needed a little bit of chiselling.

From time to time, the narrative slips into a child-like voice of reason and action which doesn't really match the mature narrator I have in my head. Also the characters needed a little bit of shaping too even though they're better contoured than the ones in other books of the genre I've read before.

Even if it has its weak spots that could've been avoided, I can definitely see potential in this world and in this atmosphere and story and, given the fact that it's quite easy to read, I think I will go for the next book too!

Great start to a new series!

Unusal storyline which I loved! As a reader it is so much more enjoyable to feel a strong connection to the secondary characters and draw me into wanting more. Stone succeeded in this. Acton packed and plenty of mystery.

How is this not a 5 star, you may ask ... Arwen and Drae make some irritating decisions concerning their budding romance.

- Arwen believes Drae will kill her once he knows what she is, yet she signs a contract that puts her right in his path. We see this issue be a repeated over and over with her inner dialogue. Causing a smidge of frustration.
- Drae, for goodish reason, is obsessed with choosing a woman his "sniffers" see as the best womb. This leads to quite a few arguments and crushed feelings throughout. But the biggest frustration is that he loved her all along and kept denying it. I mean follow you heart bro!!

Great start! I want more!!

Happy reading,
DD 🥂

I honestly really enjoyed this. Was it the most amazing fantasy I’ve ever read? No. But I was engaged the entire time and felt like the plot was pretty dang addicting.

I actually loved Arwen. I thought she was badass and loved that she wasn’t the typical “pretty girl Queen that wears dresses” and was a hunter and fought with the king.

The ending was also beautiful 🥹 I loved it!

My only real downfall of this was that I did feel like some parts were poorly written. While I freaking love young adult fantasy.. at times, the writing did feel a tad young BUT I am excited for the rest of the series because I still really enjoyed it.

- young adult
- bachelorette vibes but with dragons + magic
- dragons
- shifters
- magic
- arranged marriage
- it was always her

I don’t know why I haven’t heard about this book I loved it! Such a fast fun read. The Last Dragon King by Leia Stone was such an enjoyable read, it was exactly what I needed to get out of my rut. It looks like this book was published last year and is the first of The Kings of Avalier series. One of my favorite fantasy books I've read this year.
The Dragon King is in search for a new wife after suffering a heartbreaking tragedy. He sends out men from his royal guard to search for a new wife that can also bear him a child. The only requirement is that the women must carry their own magic in order to survive childbirth. When the King's sniffers chose Arwen as a candidate, her Mother is forced to tell her the secret's she has kept secret all these years. Will the Dragon King choose her as his wife or will she return home with money for the inconvenience to help feed her family when she returns?
For a fantasy book this did not have a lot of world building, but more focused on the characters. If you love fantasy for the world building this may not be for you. But I loved the characters, the relationships, it was both beautiful and heartbreaking. I did feel like the ending could have been drawn out a little more, I enjoyed the ending although it did feel a little rushed. I couldn't wait to start the second book The Broken Elf King. and I'm already on book #3 The Ruthless Fae King. The Kings of Avalier Series is such a fast, fun read. I will be checking out more by Leia Stone.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book started off good, but then everything becomes rushed, and I really didn’t like the choices the characters made.

I liked Arwen at the beginning because of her interactions with others. Then everything happens really quickly without any development. Arwen and Drae don’t really spent time together but are suddenly in love with each other. They don’t do anything about that though because they make stupid decisions that made no sense to me.

There were some side characters, but they weren’t developed, and the main characters didn’t really interact with them.

I really didn’t like this book because of the characters’ decisions and how rushed this book was.

Arwen'in kendisine dair bazı gerçekleri öğrenmesi?

Her bölgeden adaylar falan seçiyor.

Arwen'in kabul ettiği, Drae'nin teklif ettiği konu bende sinir kasılmalarına sebep oldu.Ya bi gidin Allah aşkına!

Devam etmem bu seriye. Gereksiz.

This book, I am sorry to say, but it was gross.

I am not saying that because it is another Bachelor-based book. I have read countless of those and I survived.

It is also the case that this is not my first book by this author. I thought that I am used to her style and that almost anything she wrote would go.

But godamn what a mess this was!

I have to admit that it is hard to talk about what displeased me without spoiling the big reveal. The story goes that there is a dragon in need of a wife, who is in her prime breeding capacities because he needs an heir yesterday. The story unfolds from there.

There was a time when "breeding programs" inside books were a matter of offense and one that triggered a lot of discussions--see The Handmaiden's Tale. Or, if you are talking about "breeding" in full-fledged erotica, then everybody knows what they are getting into from the starters. But in this case? It was straight up the romanticization of the notion that a queen shall be chosen based on her "breeding qualities"-and then the entire plot dances around the legitimacy of this criteria.

I am not a supporter of moralizing books and their plotlines. I like to dabble into gray lines. But that comes with a condition: for the subject to be properly dealt with.

“Have either of you ever been pregnant before?” she asked us, and we both shook our heads in unison. I didn’t know how they did things in Jade City, but here the young women kept their purity until marriage.”

We are in our lord's 2022 year and we are still reading about main characters that consider "purity"/"virginity".

Straight onto my „that-sucked“ shelf you go 💀 Even if I did read you in one day that’s only because of the shitty Deutsche Bahn and I had nothing else with me. Also, I paid 18€ for this. AND FOR WHAT ?!
For that bland writing? These more than flat characters ? The non existing world building ? This wild obsession with purity ( but of course only in the woman ?!) ?!???!?
What even is this
What is the purpose
This feels like asking Chat GPT to write a book for you because you have to put something out there or else a mysterious killer will unalive you
But can you really say that wouldn’t have been better than condemning the world with this ?
ALSO THERE ARE MORE BOOKS IN THIS SERIES? Hell nah
18€ BUCKS WASTED 😭😭😭

No? Beh in ogni caso eccolo qua!

I loved the idea of this book. The premise and plot line was so unique and fascinating.

I definitely which that this book would have been developed more. The characters fell so flat and some of the themes were so obvious and cliche. The authors did a lot of TELLING instead of showing.
The plot often times moves too quickly which caused things to just stop making sense

I think this book had so much potential but it feels like it was left in a draft form.

This book got worse and worse as I kept reading. I mean, where do I start?

The MC is very “not-like-other-girls.” Arwen, and her love interest, will take every opportunity to bash women that like fashion and eat salads.

The power scaling in this book is nuts. She’s basically a normal human and suddenly she has complete control over her magic and shifts into a dragon? When did that happen, exactly?

The love story in this book is goofy AF. When did they fall in love exactly? We cut to three weeks later and he’s professing his undying love? They are so dramatic for no reason. And that abysmal sex scene? Horrid.

What is up with that half-baked plan to avenge Joslyn? They leave to kill the rival queen the minute Joslyn dies and because they have fuckall of a plan, Regina dies. It’s so stupid, and all to avenge Joslyn, a character who’s supposedly good friends with our MC, though we see them interact like once.

My biggest grievance with this book:
Arwen marrying the king knowing he’ll be impregnating other women. She’s all, I can’t be selfish, I have a duty as the future queen. What duty? Seeing as you can’t bear his children you have no duty. In fact, it’s SELFISH to marry him. Marry the woman you’re goddamn have kids with dammit! She’s walking around, giddy, because she’s getting married and “it’s just like my mom with Adaline.” Lame.

If I have to read the word “womb” one more time, it’ll be too soon.

Poslední dračí král mě hodně ovlivnil krásnou obálkou a samozřejmě tím slovem “dračí”, protože co?

Děj odsýpá neuvěřitelným tempem, a když něco autorka náhodou vysvětluje, stačí ji k tomu jedna další věta a pokračujeme.
