Carolyn Fulgenzi was born on 28 July 1940 in Detroit, Michigan, USA, daughter of Janet (McLaughlin) and Andrew Fulgenzi. She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit and completed her undergraduate education at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She continued her studies attending Syracuse University receiving her Master’s in English Education. After retiring as a teacher with the Fayetteville-Manlius School District, she joined the faculty at Syracuse University as an adjunct professor in the writing department. Concurrently, she was also teaching at Onondaga Community College.

Carolyn blamed her tenth grade English teacher for nudging her into the writer's life. Sister Rose Terrence insisted that she enter a short story contest sponsored by the Detroit News, and Cara won! Of course, she was thrilled with the award -- a dictionary that still sits on her desk -- but at that time, her goal in life was to become an actress, and eventually, she attained that goal. She married Mr Hanlon, and had three sons: Kevin D., Brian A, and Brendan J. Hanlon. Only after her three sons were born that she turned her full attention to writing again. She sold her first Temptation to Harlequin in 1994, and that book, C.J.'s Defense as Carolyn Andrews, also sits on her desk -- right next to the dictionary. Since 2000, she wrote under the pseudonym of Cara Summers. She believed that her background in theater had influenced her writing, allowing her to create new characters and bring them to life for the reader. She passed away on 10 September 2013.

A fun and engaging romance
4 stars

Academic Zoë McNamara is able to analyse and figure out everything - except her no holds barred attraction to the mysterious and sexy Jed Calhoun. All she can think about is Jed, which is seriously affecting her work. So she decides the best plan of action is to sleep with him and get him out of her system once and for all.

But then she meets sexy, sophisticated Ethan Blair and she can't help but want him too. But getting mixed up with two men in the space of days might not be the best thing for Zoë as she soon finds herself embroiled in a world she only imagined happened in James Bond films. Yet even that's not as confusing as which of the two men she wants to be with so what will she do when she realises she can have both?!

If I'm honest, I didn't think I would much like this novel as although I can suspend reality, I assumed it would be too far fetched to be enjoyable. I am glad to say that I was wrong about it and although it's in no way realistic - that simply made the novel a fun and engaging romantic romp!

The story seems to follow on from a previous Cara Summers novel (The Favor) and although the main characters from that story appear, and at times it is assumed we know the back story of Jed and Zoë (which I assume featured in the first book in the series), this actually doesn't detract from the story as a whole and I don't see a need to have read the first book to enjoy and understand this one.

Obviously this is a romance story and despite the premise and the anticipation of having two men to choose from, apart from a steamy fantasy scene, the story is a lot more tame than they would have you believe. That's not to say the love scenes weren't hot and plentiful as they were both!

I enjoyed the characters within the book and their chemistry worked well together. I did feel at the end that the mystery/suspense plot overtook the romance for a while but I still didn't want to put the book down so that's definitely a point in the books favour. There also appears to be another story set up in this book but I can't seem to find out when Gage and Bailey's story will be released.

Overall this was fun, interesting and really kept me hooked. If you're looking for a light, romantic romp with some hot sex and fun thrown in then I would recommend this book to you.

Ph.D. student Zoe McNamara is recovering from having to resign from her job after rumors of her having an affair with the boss threatened the work place. So her response at being cautious around men seems logical.

Yet, the minute she sees Jed Calhoun she is a goner. After signals of interests, she decides to just give in this once and get him out of her system. Yet, she finds he's not out of her system.

After two days with no word from Jed, she is sure he took her request for a one time only to heart and is gone. Having a girl night out, she lays eyes on another man who quickly takes her breath away and oddly reminds her of Jed in a more uptight way. Once again she finds herself with a man that takes her breath away.

Jed Calhoun is in deep trouble. When his last mission went wrong and he was betrayed, he's declared 'dead'. Meeting Zoe puts a kink in his plan to find proof to clear his name b/c he knows he can't get involved with her and put her into danger. Thinking once would get her out of his system, he also finds that it doesn't work.

Two days later he gets a lead and goes undercover as Ethan Blair and meets Zoe while at a bar waiting for a meeting. When the meeting gets messed up he leads Zoe to an ally. There they are attacked and he must take her to his place for safety.

There he resents who he's become and questions what he's done. Yet he isn't able to keep his secret from Zoe long. Soon she's apart of the gang working to clear Jed's name. Turns out, her boss used her and planted the rumors himself.

Using herself as bait she gets a confession from her boss and soon Jed's name is cleared.

It's a nice story with nice characters, but something is missing regarding the characters.

They are too nice or too well balanced. The book felt like a generic romance novel with a happy ending. I liked it but nothing surprised or delighted me. Zoe worked as a data analyst for the CIA for a short while and was fired. Jed was a CIA agent who was framed for a murder of another agent and is in hiding. They are physically drawn to each other immediately when they first meet.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
They have sex. Later Jed is in disguise as Ethan. She meets and has sex with Ethan and doesn't know he is really Jed. The secret agent events continue to unfold.

DATA:
Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: six. Setting: current day Washington D.C. Copyright: 2006. Genre: contemporary romance with a little suspense.
