Lily has dropped out of medical school because she would rather be an artist. So now she is cleaning houses and squatting on the Cape at Dune Cottage on the sly, and enjoying her own painting. She is also harboring a crush on Todd who is now engaged to Amelie. Will she be able to find her happily ever after?
Cecilia has just turned 70+ and is feeling quite detached from her life. She has been a widow of famous author Cameron for a year, and is tired of being under the thumb of her daughter Kristen. While Kristen has planned a party, supposedly to celebrate Cecilia’s birthday, but mostly to honor her famous Dad, Cecilia sneaks out and heads for her secret place, Dune Cottage to hide away. But what about Seth? How does he play into this story? Will Cecilia be able to find her happily ever after?
Todd, who is Cecilia’s grandson has found his own way, despite his family’s wealth. But something isn’t quite right for him either. He adores his grandmother, and is concerned for her. And, did he make the right decision about Amelie? Will he be able to find his happily ever after?
So, we have 3 very likable characters who are attempting to find themselves, and perhaps something that has been alluding them in their lives. How will these lives intersect, especially as Cecilia finds Lily at Dune Cottage? And, Todd suddenly showing up?
And, of course there is Kristen, too. Will she be able to find her happily ever after?
And, what about the art? What Lily wants for herself? Or, what Cecilia gave up in herself? What secrets does Cecelia hold as it relates to “The Girl on the Shore?”
The author presents a peaceful calm Cape ocean setting. It allows readers to connect to the characters and feel hopeful that whatever happens, whether it is predictable or not, the pages turn in a way that makes one feel a sense of gratification that they just had a truly lovely reading experience.

Grief, marriage, family, and healing with healthy doses of romance wrapped up in a captivating story.

One of the tropes that I love to read is the blossoming connections between the younger generation and the older generation. I love it. So when I read the synopsis for this book, I knew it was one for me!
Struggles with grief and secrets that no one knows is key in this story. Regardless of the age of the character, everyone will connect with the turmoil going on inside. But Morgan brings in light and love that not only uplifts the characters but you as well.
The Summer Swap tells the story of three different women who are interconnected dealing with family, marriage, and healing, along with healthy doses of clean romance wrapped up in a captivating story.
Even with some heavy topics, Morgan manages to keep the story light-hearted and sweet, especially in the last half of the book. I love that age is no blockade to happiness and giving yourself what you deserve. I love the overall message in this story.
Morgan has gifted us a story that will make you feel good and leave you with a big smile of satisfaction.

The Summer Swap by Sarah Morgan is a women’s fiction novel that takes a contemporary romance and mixes in some family drama. The story in The Summer Swap is one that does change the point of view between the characters with three main characters to follow.
Cecilia Lapthorne repeatedly said she did not want to have a party but those requests had been completely ignored so Cecilia did her best to please her daughter, Kristen, and attend. It doesn’t take long though for Cecilia to become overwhelmed and without much thought Cecilia takes off into the night heading for Dune Cottage. The cottage had once been special to her and her husband but it now sits empty holding the pain of the past.
Lily is the caretaker of Dune Cottage but with the cottage being empty for years and years now Lily found herself without a place to stay and “borrowed” the cottage. When Cecilia arrives in the middle of the night Lily witnesses her breaking down but hurries off to not get caught. However, Cecilia is quick to learn of Lily’s actions and is also quick to forgive the young artist agreeing to let her stay in the cottage too but before either know it Cecilia’s family begins to track her down seeking answers as to why she ran off.
The Summer Swap is not the first book I’ve read from author Sarah Morgan and will undoubtedly not be the last either. The story in The Summer Swap easily pulled me into this multi generational tale and I enjoyed every minute spent with the characters involved in it along the way. I guess I may be considered a sucker for an older protagonist befriending and younger character but with age comes wisdom as they say so it’s nice to see both generations helping or healing one another and with the addition of the daughter, Kristen, we end with three generations dealing with their secrets, hurt and eventually healing. Nice story that I’d definitely recommend checking out.

I stumbled upon this book while looking for something else, and it sounded interesting. I'm truly glad I took a chance on it because it dealt with the messiness of life, family, and living the life you were meant to in such a wonderful way. The story highlighted how we view people through our own filters and how assumptions we make without truly talking to someone else can damage those relationships. However, it also showed how love and listening can overcome much of this.
I highly recommend giving this book a read. You might just find some insight into yourself along the way. – Jennifer K.

Loved The Summer Swap! Three women, all at a low in their lives: Cecilia, who’s lived in the shadow of her husband throughout their marriage is now widowed. She has mixed emotions about her loss and how she’ll move on. Kristen, Cecelia’s daughter, is grieving her father and lonely in her marriage. Kristen has been there for her husband, but he doesn’t make it a priority to be there for her. Lily, a young woman overwhelmed by the pressure to become a doctor, drops out of college, escaping to Cape Cod where she runs into Cecilia at Dune Cottage.
Cecilia and Lily strike up an unexpected friendship providing support and a listening ear. Cecilia’s reconciling the past and Lily’s figuring out what to do about her future. I was thrilled there was a second chance romance for both Lily and Cecilia! Even though I wasn’t thrilled with Kristen at the beginning, my heart when out to her as all was revealed.
I absolutely loved everything about The Summer Swap! Finding a way to find the courage to grab up happiness and do what you love, no matter your age. Dune Cottage and Cape Code sounded idyllic and a perfect place to start fresh!

DNF at 30%
I hate not finishing books, especially when I receive an advanced copy but I can’t imagine reading another 5 hours of this book. 30% in and a lot of things are hinted at (Kristen’s almost affair, a painting that should have been destroyed, Todd’s failed engagement) but nothing really happens. The majority of the beginning takes place in Cecilia’s bedroom. The hints at things to come didn’t intrigue me enough to keep reading. If anything they frustrated me because they kept being thrown at the reader with nothing more than mere mentions. The plot was slow and I had to force myself to read it. I really wanted to like this book but couldn’t get into it. I will say that the cover is gorgeous!

I have been a fan of Sarah Morgan for quite some time now, and I know that every time I pick up one of her books I am going to laugh, cry, and wish I was on a beach. The Summer Swap fulfilled all of those things once again and I loved this multi-generational family story! It took me a minute to figure out who everyone was to each other, but once I got the hang of it, I was set, and I got lost in the drama, secrets, disappointments, and laughter. There are a handful of viewpoints which is standard for one of her books, and I loved the way they all came together and built off each other. I felt instantly transported to Cape Cod, and this was the epitome of a beach read in every way.
I still generally prefer a full cast for audiobooks with multiple viewpoints, but I thought Dara Rosenberg did a superb job with the audio and bringing the various characters/viewpoints to life. I purchased a copy on Libro.fm, and I definitely plan to revisit it at some point since it was just that good. I also highly enjoyed the art/artist aspect of the storyline, and it brought about some shocking revelations that I wasn’t expecting. I loved the blend of humor along with an air of mystery and the romance that was brought by more than one set of characters. The Summer Swap is a beautiful tale of healing and second chances that I would recommend to any women’s fiction and contemporary romance reader!

Such a fun summer read! I love Sarah Morgan’s books & this one was no different. A quick easy read with very lovable characters. I am a sucker for dual POVs & that aspect definitely added to this story. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth in this summer read, as many are fluffy. So glad to see one of my favorite Christmas authors take on a summer book & do it so well!

I read ‘Snowed in for Christmas’ by this author just over a year ago, that was a great cosy read. This was a tale of two halves. The beginning for me was super slow but okay. The second half was so much better.
We have Cecilia Lapthorne who is fast approaching her 75th birthday. She wants a quiet affair but her controlling put together daughter insists that they must have a party. They are not close and the reasons become clear as the book progresses.
Cecilia is now a widow and her late husband was a renowned artist. Cecilia has a secret that she has kept from every one. The one thing she knows is that she does not want the party which is being held in her house. As her wishes have fallen upon deaf ears she takes action. She climbs out of the window and is on her way to Dune cottage. The very cottage that should have been sold by her late husband.
The cottage holds very happy memories but, one memory in particular tainted it for her. So, this is the first time in 50 years that she has returned…. She is astonished to find out that she is not alone …..
This is the part that piqued my interest. We find out more secrets of Cecilia’s past and there is an old flame, and a time for reflection. A caring grandson tracks her down and there is a surprise when he sees who is at the cottage. We see Cecilia starting to find her way to a possible future instead of allowing her past to keep her stagnant. This cottage is the start for many beginnings for Cecilia and her family..

In ‘Die zomer met jou’ panikeert de 70-jarige Cecilia en vlucht naar haar vakantiehuis in Cape Cod. Ze hoopt rust te vinden maar ook antwoorden op vragen. Totdat ze ontdekt dat Lily, de schoonmaakster, van het huis haar tijdelijke verblijfplaats heeft gemaakt. Ze wil zo geld uitsparen om haar droom als kunstenaar tot werkelijkheid te doen komen. Tot dat Cecilia verschijnt natuurlijk. Het is een zomer van tweede kansen want een oude mannelijke bekende voor Lily komt terug op het toneel…
Het leuke aan deze feelgood is dat het niet zozeer helemaal gefocust is op de romantiek, maar dat vriendschap ook een belangrijke rol speelt. Cecilia en Lily raken namelijk bevriend en deze ontwikkeling is erg goed neergeschreven. Het was heel leuk om over dit onderwerp te lezen.
Er zijn ook geheimen die zowel Cecilia en Lily voor elkaar en/of de buitenwereld verbergen. Daar kom je als lezer geleidelijk aan achter wat ze nu verbergen. Dat maakt dat dit ook wel een spannend verhaal is.

Ik heb enorm genoten van dit verhaal en heb ook niet echt iets aan te merken. Luchtigheid wordt afgewisseld met diepgang in de problemen die de personages ervaren. Deze auteur schrijft zeer fijn en je kan mooi wegdromen bij de setting van dit verhaal. ‘Die zomer met jou’ krijgt 4,5 sterren.

The prose were well done, and the characters were FULLY fleshed out. However, I don’t think there was enough emphasis on the setting. I think Stephen King’s rule (or perhaps a method recommended by King) is describe three things in a room – I don’t think that occurred once in this book...? I wasn’t even left with a good sense of the house (which was so important to the story) or the paintings other than there was a girl on the beach. In fact, I think this book could have benefited immensely in general by following the rule of three.
The characters were very well done. I had a great sense of who they were and what made them tick. Cecelia was matriarchal goals. Kristen was a touch insufferable (therefore the most relatable, since I too am completely insufferable). Lilly was sweet. I thought the *moment* between Lilly and Todd was sweet, and it made my heart go pitter-patter. I think it was a bit out of left field, and *instant love.* I needed more yearning. But that scene was super sweet. I’d re-read those pages over and over.
I think the inner monologues needed to be edited more. I found some of the speech redundant and reiterating things that the character’s already thought. And many of the conversations felt like interviews. Many of the conversations did not feel natural – they just felt like more info dumps.
I think it’s a huge accomplishment to write a story with such vivid characters. I’ve read many books where all the characters have the exact same personality, and that is not what ‘s going on in these pages.
This book wasn’t for me, but that doesn’t mean it’s not for others. This is definitely a vibes book, rather than plot. If you are into hallmark movies and want something sweet and beachy – this is the book for you.

De cover van dit boek vond ik erg leuk. De kleuren combinatie is mooi verwerkt en de 2 vrouwen die afzonderlijk rusten in het water vond ik erg leuk verwerkt.
In dit verhaal volgen we drie vrouwen die alle drie wat probleempjes hebben. Zo besluit Cecilia te vluchten voor het groote feest dat word georganiseerd. Lily stopt met haar studie en Kristen is niet meer gelukkig in haar huwelijk. Alle drie de personages zijn erg mooi, realistisch neergezet en hoe verder in het boek hoe beter je ze leert kennen.
Dit verhaal is vanuit alle drie de perspectieven geschreven waardoor je makkelijk de gedachtes en de emoties van kan snappen. Zo maak je mee hoe ze omgaan met rauw, persoonlijke ontwikkeling en eenzaamheid maar ook mooie momenten zoals een familieband, vriendschap en oude liefdes
Dit boek was absoluut een zomer roman, door de plek waar het boek zich afspeelt. Een heerlijk leuk en grappig verhaal vol drama. Sarah Morgan heeft een heerlijke realistische en vlotte schrijfstijl. De verhaallijnen lopen mooi in elkaar over en de personages komen mooi tot zijn recht

Not my favorite by Sarah Morgan but still an enjoyable summer women's fiction beach read featuring three different women going through different life upheavals - an older recent widow, her daughter whose surgeon husband never has time for her and the widow's housekeeper who becomes an unexpected guest when she returns to her Cape Cod cottage. The art storyline was fun and the way two of the women turned out to be talented painters was a great connection but overall this was just an okay read that was light on the romance and just didn't really grab my emotions the way her books sometimes can. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review! Recommended for fans of authors like Jennifer Weiner or Elin Hilderbrand.

I read this book at the perfect time -it was just what I needed. Happiness, a beach, a love story, a little mystery. Sarah Morgan is an excellent writer and I’m now inclined to binge every book she’s written!

4.5 Stars The Summer Swap is the story of three different women who are interconnected dealing with family, marriage, and healing, as well as finding romance. Lily Thomas is an aspiring artist, who had dropped out of medical school when she realized she didn't want the pressure and that she enjoyed her art history course. At that time not only were her parents upset, but her best friend, Hannah Buckingham was so upset, that their argument ended a friendship since they were young. She is squatting in a cottage that she is the caretaker for, not knowing that it belongs to Hannah's grandmother, Cecelia Lapthorne. Cecelia thought her artist husband had sold the cottage years ago. When he dies, she finds out that he never did, and although she never wanted to return to Dune Cottage, she is hiding out from her family, who are having a party for her birthday and to memorialize her husband. She wants not part of it and escapes to the cottage. The third woman is Cecelia's daughter and Hannah's mother. Kristen Buckingham. She loves her husband, surgeon Theo, but he doesn't seem to love her, at least their family and marriage isn't as important as his job. As this story unfolds, we see these three women deal with their grief, hurts, failed love, family and decide how to move forward.
I really enjoy Sarah Morgan's women's fiction, and this was another enjoyable story. Seeing three women that have ties to one another, although not close ones, deal with three completely different problems, was interesting. I liked all the women, and their growth in their relationships, as well as making decisions about what they wanted was relatable. I like books where women support one another and that was evident in this story. There is some romance, but that is not the main story, it is as a result of their growth and problem solving. The ancillary relationships that are also sorted as a result of these women and their choices was also a pleasant surprise. Secrets often have to come out to solve problems and forgive yourself and others, and that worked well in this book. The theme of family, was also present. With three generations of one family, problems they encounter and secrets they keep from one another, there is bound to be problems and some reconciliation needed. I also have to say that I really liked Todd. Although he allowed himself to be taken in by a not very nice woman, he seemed to have a level head on his shoulders and was very accepting of his grandmother's choices and reasons for them. I enjoyed this book, but some of the situations were a bit too easy to solve and formulaic to make it a 5 star read, but it is close. Overall, this was an easy to read story, with problems that three women eventually sort out, and an uplifting and hopeful ending. Exactly what I love about Sarah Morgan's books.

Lily has a temporary cleaning job.
It’s only fairly recently that I’ve got round to reading Sarah Morgan’s books and I’m delighted that’s the case because it means I have a whole back catalogue waiting for me. The Summer Swap is just wonderful.
The story is very much character driven with family, marriage and relationships at the heart of the story, ensuring that we get to know the people here so thoroughly. The Summer Swap works so emotionally well because as Lily, Cecelia and Kristen reveal their innermost thoughts, aspirations and insecurities, they are recognisable and relatable. Sarah Morgan writes with such sensitivity and understanding that on almost every page I found an aspect of Lily, Cecelia and Kristen’s lives that resonated with me.
I loved the fact that The Summer Swap breaks away from the usual 30 somethings to characters in younger, middle and older adulthood. It’s glorious to find a woman in her seventies like Cecelia having autonomy over her life. I think it says something about the gorgeous quality of the writing that I really didn’t like Kristen at the beginning of The Summer Swap, but by the end I understood her as she gained both my sympathy and empathy.
With the focus on brilliant, layered and vivid characters that doesn’t mean there isn’t a compelling and riveting narrative here too. There are some very dramatic moments, but for me the absolute success of the story comes through the more ordinary aspects of these people’s lives. Cecelia’s reluctance at being bullied into a party she doesn’t want to attend, Kristen’s need to be proficient, noticed and to organise, and Lily’s guilt at not following the path set out for her as she develops her artistic talents is totally convincing. And whilst The Summer Swap is brilliantly resolved at the end as one might hope, there’s a true sense of these lives continuing far beyond the confines of the story. Much of the plot is precipitated before the story starts and will continue after this particular time frame is over. I found this such wonderful storytelling.
The themes of The Summer Swap are equally compelling. Our sense of self and what makes us who we are as we try to accommodate the demands of family, profession, marriage and so on, at the same time as we also strive to be true to ourselves, is at the heart of this warm, compassionate and understanding story.
I fear there will be those readers who dismiss The Summer Swap without ever picking it up because they assume it is too lightweight for their intellect. They could not be more wrong. The Summer Swap is absorbing and diverting as a story, but it is also a sensitive, mature insight into what makes us human. Sarah Morgan teaches tolerance, empathy and acceptance even as she entertains us so fabulously. I’d defy anyone reading The Summer Swap not to love it just as much as I did.

This was a heartwarming and heartfelt story.

Another fabulous heartfelt novel by one of my favorite authors. Her female characters are strong yet vulnerable, each uncertain of what the future holds. Journey with them as they open their hearts to new beginnings, friendships, and love.
