Big Concepts/Words and Inaccurate Illustrations

Surprisingly, over the last few years, I've reviewed a fair number of alphabet picture books meant to support young children learning the alphabet. Unfortunately, I think this author—who writes delightful children's stories—has forgotten the audience for these types of books. The words she uses for each letter are usually not simple ones. Instead, most are relatively complex scientific concepts like gravity or light year. A brief description is provided for each word and letter, and some concepts also include an interesting fact. Sometimes, these explanations or additional information also have hard words. Children for whom a book like this is appropriate would grapple with or not understand these complexities. A first alphabet book should support but not overly challenge a young mind. The illustrations also had pluses and minuses. Some are simple, like the one for “constellation,” and a few are even beautiful, like the one showing the eye for “iris.” But a few were just flat-out wrong. J is for Jupiter, and that's a beautiful planet as seen in photographs from space exploration. For whatever reason, the author chose to illustrate it as not remotely looking like it does in real life, including broad swaths of green and blue! If you're going to do a science book, at least have it reflect reality! While I really enjoy this author's children's fiction picture books, I am not impressed by this one.

I received a free digital copy of picture book, but that did not affect my review.

Each page had good coloring and a short with examples to show what the science can look like or mean to those who want to explore. Great for kids.
