'There's a Monster in the Woods' written by Fae Quin
April 2026
I bought the paperback a couple years ago, then saw this avaliable on Book Funnel and decided to reread it, to see if anything changed. I can't tell (because I donated the original), but it seems the same, so nothing obvious.
This wasn't exactly a "meet cute", more like a "meet scared witless" at least at first glance, when the lonely gardener first encounters "the monster" in the wilderness, covered with blood and feasting on a deer it killed.
But then...slowly, so friggin' slowly, they kept encountering each other, in odd little ways at first, turning into midnight exchanges of gifts, like the bread Ellis baked for Styx, and the return, one by one, of the items that had been in Ellis' basket, that day he ran frightened from the woods and dropped it during his terrified escape.
This whole storyline was a lesson in patience and erotica, sliding artfully between their worlds as they kept their curious encounters exploratory, yet also slowly ramping up the excitement.
Great tale of curiosity and excitement as they continued to learn about the other.
The ending wasn't exactly unexpected, yet it still was a cliffhanger, too.
Hmm...maybe not a cliffhanger but more of "use your own imagination", given the way the tale has been unfolding and also Ellis' thoughts.
I really liked it!
(but what happened to the dog?)
Oh, and loved this cover!
