The author of the runaway hit Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies shares honest and practical lessons for healing your past and owning your future so you can radiate strength, bravery, and joy when life gets dark.
For the past decade, Tara Schuster worked like hell to repair the emotional wounds inflicted during what she refers to as her neglected, "mess-wreck disaster" of a childhood. She brought radical self-care, healing rituals, and self-love into her life, and on most days, she was a grateful, happy, and stable adult. She even wrote a book about it!
But then she lost her job, the one on which she had staked her entire adult identity. Cue an out-of-body-panic-attack-doom-spiral and deep depression that brought her harshest childhood traumas to the surface. Isolated at home during a global pandemic, she experienced piercing loneliness and a lack of purpose like she had never known. Finally, after a particularly dangerous dissociative episode while driving down the highway, she realized that enough was enough; she needed to slow down and pull over, to stop the relentless hustling that had gotten her this far, and to recover her innermost self.
This book is a guide to healing your deepest soul wounds, getting off your “good enough” plateau, developing habits that will give you lasting courage and resolve, and creating the spectacular life that you actually want. Full of practical, free baby-steps we can take today, it's for people who are ready to liberate themselves from their emotional suffering, discover their purpose, and finally sit in the driver's seat of their experience. It's for anyone who is tired, hurting, and feeling like their essential brightness is gone. It's for people who are ready to glow in the f*cking dark.
Oh, hi! Thanks for stopping by. I'm excited to be here and thrilled to meet ya!
I wrote my book with the singular goal of making other people feel less lonely. As a kid, the books of David Sedaris made me feel like I was not alone in having a "different" family and my prayer-hope-please-oh-please-wish is that my book gives you some comfort. Or at least a few laughs. I'll take either tbh.
Tara Schuster is vice president of talent and development at Comedy Central. She was the executive in charge of the Emmy® and Peabody Award-winning Key & Peele, the Emmy® Award winning @Midnight, and numerous other shows including Another Period, Detroiters, and Hood Adjacent. Her plays have been performed in the New York International Fringe Festival and her writing has appeared in The New Yorker online. She lives in Los Angeles.
I squealed with delighted when I received a digital ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my opinion because I had been waiting for Schuster's second book ever since I closed her first phenomenal self-care hit "Buy Yourself the F*cking Lillies". Her collection of essays related to healing your soul does exactly that-- she teaches you through relating her personal experiences as to the various things you can do to not only heal with the things we've come to affectionately call "tro-mah" (money woes, childbearing concerns, parent/child relationships, work environment), but to also glow like the confident shooting stars that our author believes that her readers can be. I felt the love and healing as I read these pages, and much like its predecessor "Lillies", I'll be buying a copy to put on my shelf to refer to over and over again.
Just when I thought that no book could ever top "Buy Yourself The F*cking Lilies", Tara Schuster did it again!
With her new book, Glow in the F*cking Dark, Tara goes beyond self-care and reparenting and explores the little, yet powerful steps that you can take to reconnect with your authentic self and grow yourself up to build the life YOU want. Unlike other self-help books, Glow in the F*cking Dark is not at all condescending and does not tell you what to do to solve your "problems". Instead, the book emphasizes that “Getting lost is as important as getting found” and that “You don’t need to change into someone else, you need to grow into yourself”.
Glow in the F*cking Dark is a kind, genuine, practical, empathetic, relatable and honest memoir from “Someone who’s been there”. You will feel seen, supported, heard and acknowledged - but also, less lost and alone. As Glennon Doyle put it for Tara’s first book, “You are going to want Tara to become your new best friend”. Correction: TARA IS GOING TO BECOME YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND. In fact, Tara is 100% going to make you laugh, cry, dream, and look inwards, all of which will help you heal, grow and GLOW ✨ into the person you want to become.
As Tara explains, healing is not a linear process and you can’t hustle your way through life. But, if you are:
- Wondering ‘Who am I?”, - In the middle of a life crisis, - Questioning what you really want out of life, - Uncertain about what you are hustling for, - Feeling lost or as if you are in the backseat of your own life, - Unsure about how you feel, or - Trying to solve an undefined “problem” within you
Then look no further. Glow in the F*cking Dark is the book for you! Do yourself a favour and get yourself a copy 💛
I have some mixed feelings about this one. While Tara Schuster does have some gems of wisdom in this book, you will have to suffer through some majorly cringey anecdotes to get to them.
I can see why people like her books, but they just aren’t for me. It just reads a little too much like “girl boss” and “hey girl” culture to me. It also leans more towards the Rachel Hollis style of self help which is a NO for me.
An excellent workbook on how to heal yourself from a traumatic past. With honesty and humor, Tara takes us through her life and the ways she learned to heal.
A lot of this is helpful but it’s also very hard to take advice from someone who has support and/or resources. Someday I’d like a book like this when the person is in their lowest state and they don’t have money, friends, decent healthcare, etc. - and they somehow survive it. That would be more impactful.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to receive an ARC of this book. Tara is officially my new homegirl. She talks like me and she has been through enough trauma to last a lifetime. I can relate.
The book has very helpful activities to get you started on your journey to self-love and glowing in the f*cking dark. Her stories from her life add so much depth to the book. They really made her seem much more realistic. She's not just another author spewing some self-help mumbo jumbo. She has been through it and come out on the other side more healthy and alive. I truly admire her spirit.
On the downside, there are quite a few typos in the book...spelling...extra words in sentences that did not entirely make sense. Yet and still...I will give this book five stars because the content is valuable and is presented in a way that is not daunting to the reader.
It was a slow takeoff on this book but it got better as the book went on. Definitely some useful advice in the pages and it almost needs to be read by the younger generations. Maybe stop them from making some mistakes.
“If you're not dealing with the thing you know you need to deal with, it's dealing with you. And it's likely that the people around dealing with it too.”
Glow in the F*cking Dark is a book that guides healing from your past, with some insightful advice and activities to start your journey to self-love and glowing in the f*cking dark. The book is divided into three sections (heal, grow, and glow) and has some chapters. I had high expectations for this book, and though it gave some helpful advice, it did not work well for me.
What I liked: ✾ It started well, and the author shared her traumatic experience with her parents. She has been through a lot since childhood, and I admire that she overcame all those things and became more alive and healthy. ✾ Her real-life experiences feel so raw, and she is so vulnerable in sharing them before elaborating on points related to the story. Many topics were covered that I think many people could relate to. ✾ The chapters I like the most are “Make Decisions for Future You” and “The Best Way to Build a Habit”. ✾ I liked that she shared the healing process with her parents. ✾ There are many takeaways/quotes that I found valuable, and the author also helped me to understand that all of our feelings are valid.
What I disliked: ✾ Why all the footnotes? Initially, I was okay with that, but throughout more pages, I found the footnotes were distracting. Too many things to elaborate on? ✾ It was inspiring when the author approached the serious healing topics in a funny and lighthearted way, but I felt that the author was trying so hard to be funny in some parts, and I could not bring myself to like it. ✾ The elaboration of her experience before getting to the main point was so long. It could be cut off a lot with good editing. The book's format is also not my liking for a self-help book. ✾ I could not agree less with the chapter “Please Stop Calling Your Colleagues Your Family.”
Overall, this book is a miss for me. However, I truly believe I am not the right person for this book, and I hope it will reach the correct audience widely.
I loved her first book, BUY YOURSELF THE F*CKING LILIES. This time, she's talking about what can happen when you get yourself in "a good place".
Your brain decides you can handle facing things that you weren't capable of facing earlier.
Seems like kind of a crappy deal, doesn't it?
But listen. It's all part of being your best you. And, truly, it's all going to come out at some point, so you might as well manage this shit.
GLOW IN THE F*CKING DARK is a love letter to us from someone who has "been there". Tara is offering up what she's learned about responding to trauma and anxiety so we can all get our shit together faster and then meet for margaritas without crying. Or, you know, Book Club.
And now I'm wishing I hadn't loaned out my Lilies book. I could use a refresher.
Go ahead and pre-order this book that is due out in February. This is like a conversation with that bestie that loves you but also kinda calls you on your bullshit.
Thank you to @netgalley for the advance digital copy.
Reading this book hit a new milestone for me: the most annotation I have done in a book. Ever. From the very first page, I was drawn into Tara’s story and her journey. Her unflinching honesty, mic drop nuggets of wisdom and practical advice sent me right to my journal and a new place of possibility. This is a foundational book for anyone struggling to find their way or simply wanting something better for themselves….and the carefully dropped f-bombs make it that much more of an experience.
This book was just okay. I loved her first book (buy yourself the fucking lilies) so much that I gifted it to all of my best girlfriends. This one felt like she got a deal for book 2 because of the success of book 1 and she had to then write stuff to fill it, rather than first having the idea for the book.
I had the good fortune to read Glow in the F*cking Dark before it’s officially out! I have already bought my hard copy, but my very first ARC? Amazing. I finished this entire book before I gave it the rating I feel it deserves. I laughed, I cried, and I pushed myself to ask the questions Tara poses to truly understand ourselves. She has a way of simply making you feel like you’re in this (this being life) together. It’s not easy, but gosh is it amazing! She challenges your outlook, she encourages growth, and she understands you as you are right now in this very moment. I am a huge fan of Buy Yourself the F*cking Lillies and this deepens what you took from that, but also you can read it without having read Lillies.
As a huge fan of Tara’s first book, Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies, I was ecstatic to be chosen to receive an advance copy of Glow in the F*cking Dark!
In her books, Tara uses a memoir style to show her readers her own vulnerability and imperfections. She states several times throughout the book that she is not an expert but cites the research she has done, credits the experts that she has found help her, and even encourages the reader to read those experts’ books. With showing her imperfections, she make it easier to relate to her readers and shows that she is still working towards making herself better every day.
I loved that she brought to her readers’ attention that even after writing Lilies, she has had moments where she has faltered. I love the realness that she shows in these moments, rather than let her readers believe that she leads a perfect life because of her practices as many self-help authors seem to do.
Tara brings acceptance, compassion, joy, and sometimes even laughter to some of the most difficult subjects of life. I love the way that she speaks to her reader as if you are her best friend and she is sitting in the room with you, holding your hand and helping you cope with whatever it is you may be going through.
I recommended Lilies to everyone I knew when I read it a few years ago, and I will do the same with Glow.
Tara Schuster's "Glow in the Fucking Dark" is a fantastic life-affirming page-turner! This is a wonderful book that covers topics like self-care and self-love, and ultimately empowering people to restore their inner glow. In a world where burnout and shitty moments in life can drain you and your soul, it is nice to know that you are not alone. If you are looking for balance in your life or need some insight on creating a sense of mindfulness from someone who has been through some stuff, I highly recommend this book (as well as her first book "Buy Yourself the Fucking Lilies")!
*Warning: the title may be a huge indicator but just in case you need a heads up, there is A LOT of hilarious profanity peppered throughout the book which personally lights up my soul!
This book took me a while to finish. Had a hard time sticking with it… I think it had a hard time sticking with itself 😵💫 A combination of useful facts, random a$$ babbling, and comedy. If you’ve searched it out, you’ll probably find that it meets your needs.3 stars = meh
Sorry to say this, but it is such a stupid and meaningless book! I’m not into self help books a lot but I can name a couple of them which really inspired me and changed my course of life. But this one was just an annoying book for me with nothing special for reader. The only good parts were when she was talking about her childhood and real experiences in life. I found no practical lessons in it. Just a bunch of chitchat that weren’t even funny.
Finished this super helpful book by Tara Schuster last night! It comes out in March and you’ll want to add it to your TBR! I loved the first book she wrote and this was almost as good. It was fascinating to read the raw stories Tara shares in this book and I especially enjoyed her comments at the end of each chapter. I was LOL at them. She has such a talent for comedy.
The other part of this book that has be suggesting that everyone get a copy when they can... Tara's tools for how to find your glow even when you're battling the dark times. I suffer from depression and anxiety so this is a highly relatable topic for me and even though I've been on a healing journey for some years, Tara still manages to provide a new way of coping and looking at mental health.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy. It was just what I desired!
Tara Schuster's "Glow in the F*cking Dark" is an honest and practical guide for healing your past and owning your future. Schuster shares her own story of overcoming a tough childhood and finding strength, bravery, and joy in the face of darkness.
Her message of self-care, healing, and self-love is evident throughout the book, and her personal experiences provide valuable lessons for anyone dealing with emotional trauma. Schuster's writing is accessible and relatable, making "Glow in the F*cking Dark" an essential read for anyone looking to create a life they love.
I would recommend this book to anyone struggling with their past, or anyone who feels stuck in their life. If you want to not feeling alone, this book is for you. Schuster shows us that it is possible to find hope and healing, even in the darkest of times.
Wow! Thank you, NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed all of the feelings and emotions within the deepest parts of myself that this book brought to light. By the end, I was an emotional mess, but it was much needed. I added more books by this author immediately and I’m suggesting others do the same!
This is such a good way to approach the self-help genre. It’s completely avoiding the toxic positivity route that too many take on. Tara is hilarious and has so much courage and vulnerability. Even when I couldn’t relate to her trauma , I kept finding gems if knowledge and hearing myself saying—- yessss I can’t wait to recommend this to this client or this client ( I’m a life coach ) her humor and insight and awareness felt refreshing. Our journeys are always ongoing and it’s good to never feel arrived
3.5 stars, rounded up for how intimate this book feels.
I read Tara's first book, Lilies, last year and got a lot out of it. It's nice to know other people don't have it all figured out either. I heard about this sequel on the Financial Feminist podcast and was excited to check it out. We hear more about Tara's journey and a lot of the advice she has is great.
I'm not a spiritual person and there is some woo-woo in a few of the essays that I couldn't connect with. I am very happy for Tara to find this meaning in her life though. And I'm sure it can help a lot of other people.
3.5 ⭐️ good advice. Listening to the author narrate their own book is interesting! If you liked buy yourself the fucking Lillie’s you’ll like this one too
Tara Schuster has done it again! Glow in the F*cking Dark resonated with me on so many levels. From the discussion on being moneysick, to body gratitude and looking at loneliness as a superpower! She is so relatable and this book made me realize that the life I’ve always wanted and the person I’ve wanted to be, are already here and it’s up to me to be that person and live that life. She offers advice on how to be that person and live that life. She truly has taught me how to “glow!”
I wanted to read this because I read the first one and thought: 1. The author seems honest about the difficulties she went through and her story is interesting, 2. There were some practical tips to try on the first book/prompts to self-reflect, and 3. The first one was an easy read, so why not? The rest of her story is indeed fascinating to read, and I found some pretty useful tips in the book about learning more about yourself, meditating, and being more self-compassionate. However, the writing tone that is very much like oral conversation is sometimes tiring for me. I get that this is her style, and this is why I didn’t give 3 stars, but sometimes what I was reading made me cringe or roll my eyes.
I really thought her first book, 'Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies', had a lot of helpful first steps into exploring how to start your self-care journey, but this one really missed the mark. It's almost like the author started this journey, and unfortunately, the pendulum swung to the extreme.
Part one was too preachy. Part two was mostly similar to the first book. Part three had one or two decent chapters. Many times this book seemed victim-blamey, sprinkled with a 'what if I never had this trauma? I should be thankful for my trauma, because if it didn't happen, I wouldn't be who I am now! Cause I like who I've grown into!', and very dismissive of pretty important things?? I feel like?? (that really, I think is something she hasn't worked through yet, and we'll get another updated book based on what she's learned.)
Overall I recommend the first book and maybe take a quick scan of part 2 of this book to further some areas.
4.5 stars. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC. This feels more geared to gen z and millennials to navigate how to have one's best life all while dealing with mental health issues such as anxiety during the pandemic that the author experienced as well. The message is an overall positive one filled with lots of good information and the author brings an appropriate amount of humor especially when dealing with more serious topics.
