How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t: 14 Habits That Are Holding You Back from Happiness

Rate this book
A cut-through-the-crap guide to quitting the self-destructive habits that undermine happiness and success

How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t is a straight-shooting self-improvement guide for women, one that offers frank advice about the most common self-destructive behaviors women engage in. Andrea Owen—a nationally sought-after life coach—crystallizes what’s behind several invisible, undermining habits, from catastrophizing and people-pleasing to listening to the imposter complex or to one’s inner critic. Powerfully on the mark, the chapters are short and digestible, nicely bypassing weighty examinations in favor of punch points of awareness. Her book kicks women’s gears out of autopilot and empowers readers to create happier, more fulfilling lives.

Now updated to address new challenges including the COVID-19 global pandemic, the toxic positivity of the self-care industry, and the destructive impact of social media, How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t enjoins readers to overcome their negative habits with compassion and understanding.

Just another generic self help book written for and centering white, cisgendered, heterosexual women in Western societies. The couple of gems found throughout the book come from other sources, and the rest of the content is the author telling you why you feel like shit as she makes sweeping assumptions about her readers. She also refers to women as “females,” regularly throughout, and continuously blames women for why they feel the way they do while only once or twice actually touching on the underlying societal issues of sexism and inequality.

Really enjoyed this one. I feel like it had great tips for redirecting negative self-talk and a more gentle point of few on how to improve your life but while still being productive. I only knocked down a star because I felt like the chapters were pretty long where by the end of it I’m not sure if I retained everything. But that’s just a personal preference. Overall recommend for anyone in a rut or a transitional stage!

This book was interesting.
I may have to listen again in the future.
I see where I do some of these habits and need to work on them.
I also see where valuing myself is something I thought I was doing but as I listened probably not my best of ways.
Definitely helpful and some different thinking and learning happening.

I didn’t really enjoy/connect with this book. Usually I can take something away from a self-help book, but not with this one. Only listened to it because it was somehow on my audible 🤷🏻‍♀️
