“A hilarious, mile-a-minute ride alongside well-drawn characters with great friendships and a bit of romance on the side. Margaret never fails to deliver!”“Thanks, Margaret, for this wonderful character. Sometimes I think she’s me!”“The problems (Val) encounters are so weird, only her brain could go that route. She is paranoid, but honest. Weird but wonderful. Her friends are a real hoot. I don't know where she finds them, but I want some too. They are so much fun!”“Weird and quirky, that's Val. Wonderful read (for) anyone needing a good laugh and an adventure into the weird.”“I have read many of the Val Fremden books, and whilst events in past books have led her to this point it is possible to read each book as a standalone. However, I urge you to read this fun series, Val is a totally unique character, fun, slightly mad and definitely old enough to behave better (but she doesn't!).”“Margaret's observations and witty turn of phrase make this book a laugh-a-minute (Val describes her new colleague 'looks like Lurch's psychotic teenage offspring'!).”
Why do I love underdogs? Well, it takes one to know one.
Like the main characters in my novels, I haven’t lead a life of wealth or luxury. In fact, as it stands now, I’m set to inherit a half-eaten jar of Cheez Whiz…if my siblings don’t beat me to it.
During my illustrious career, I’ve been a roller-skating waitress, an actuarial assistant, an advertising copywriter, a real estate agent, a house flipper, an organic farmer, and a traveling vagabond/truth seeker. But no matter where I’ve gone or what I’ve done, I’ve always felt like a weirdo.
I’ve learned a heck of a lot in my life. But getting to know myself has been my greatest journey. Today, I know I’m smart. I’m direct. I’m jaded. I’m hopeful. I’m funny. I’m fierce. I’m a pushover. And I have a laugh that lures strangers over, wanting to join in the fun.
In other words, I’m a jumble of opposing talents and flaws and emotions. And it’s all good.
I enjoy underdogs because we’ve got spunk. And hope. And secrets that drive us to be different from the rest.
So dare to be different. It's the only way to be! Happy reading!
Well, this was fairly ridiculous and more than a bit cringe-worthy, but it does what it says on the tin. If you like a silly cast of characters, then you'll probably enjoy this. Otherwise, I'd say you probably won't enjoy it. I was in the mood for it and it was a bit of a "palate cleanser" me. It was a fun, quick, eye-rolling read that doesn't take itself too seriously.
Thanks to the author for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion. I have read many of the Val Fremden books, and whilst events in past books have led her to this point it is possible to read each book as a standalone. However, I urge you to read this fun series, Val is a totally unique character, fun, slightly mad and definitely old enough to behave better (but she doesn't!). Margaret's observations and witty turn of phrase make this book a laugh-a-minute (Val describes her new colleague 'looks like Lurch's psychotic teenage offspring'!). The 'mystery' in this book is merely a vehicle for Val's imagination to work overtime and land her in the most incredible situations, whilst she tries to work out where her (lovely) errant boyfriend, Tom, has gone and what he's up to. Don't expect a clever crime novel, you'll definitely get a hilarious, mile-a-minute ride alongside well-drawn characters with great friendships and a bit of romance on the side. Margaret never fails to deliver!
This author never disappoints! I’ve been along on Val’s crazy-train since the very beginning and have loved every laugh of it. This time Val has a creepy new co-worker who just might be a serial killer. Val is trying to locate her missing boyfriend, find a serial killer and keep her job. A funny, twisty plot, great storytelling, old familiar characters and zany new ones make for a hilarious read. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
It's more like it could only happen to Val. She is the qurkiest, most comical prognostic in a mystery cozy. In this book , add in Geraldine Jiggles, Val's boss at the second hand junk store. Gary Poppins, her co-worker at the store, who Val describes him as a zombie look a like. Oh, and add in Val's over active imagination. Mix them all together and you have a giggle and laugh out louds while reading this book.If you haven't read any of this series, or any of the author's books, your missing great reads.
I received an ARC copy of this book and volunteered my honest review.
The best part about reading any of Val Fremden's adventures, is the fact that I grew up in Pinellas County, ( mainly Pinellas Park, and St. Petersburg), and I can visualize the places AND the quirky, hilarious characters....errr...friends of Val's. This book was hilarious and definitely kept me on the edge of my seat!
I really enjoyed the references to the first Val Fremden series. Bringing another character back and Val’s memories of Glad are much appreciated. I feel Val in this series is more down on her luck than the end of her first series. It doesn’t quite have the same spark but still a good read. I love the character of Val even when she makes no sense.
I love these books Val and the boys are hilarious I’m glad we have more stories I just wish they actually followed the books story lines more accurately ( winky never mentioned the face his wife is pregnant)
I love this series! Val and her crazy ideas! She is some character! If you are looking for something to read that is light and funny pick up this book. Or better yest start with book one in this very funny series.
Val Fremdem in Her Glory Our Valiant heroine is up to her usual half-baked sluethery. The book is funny and as odd as usual. Val does all of the cringe-worthy things you have come to love and expect. This series is a nice continuation of the previous series.
I think I like this book better than the first because now I understand Val more - she's kookie! She doesn't ever let things get her down, no, instead she just freaks out and chases imaginary unicorns. 😄
Ridiculous, absolutely a roaring success for laughter!! Love following her wacky, loveable cohorts in crime. Ms. Lashley ALWAYS delivers the laughs! Read them all.
This has to be the dumbest—and most odiferous—idea on record.
It never fails. I will pick out one of Margaret Lashley's various offers to read over a planned couple of days - and before you even ask: yes, I am anal-retentive enough to plan out my reading to that level of exactitudeness - but BOOM, next thing you know, I've gone and read the entire book in practically one sitting. But can you blame me? I mean, my latest selection, namely "There's Something About Gary (Val Fremden Strikes Again Humorous Mystery Book 2)" - which is fortunate since that's where I'm leaving this review - was an absolute hoot and a half. Heck, this one may have even qualified to be a full-fledged double hooter. Annnnnd now I'm re-reading what I've just written and moving on… quickly. I had the thighs of a grandma but the sense of humor of a pre-pubescent boy.
It is rare that my stoically well-aged self performs what the young 'uns call today a literal LOL - and no, this time this is not a reference to Loving Our Lounger! - but SAG had me outright guffawing in spots. Which to be honest, is a lot better than having a giggle that "sounds like the dying gasps of an asthmatic pig!" But come on: there is absolutely not a single part of this story that I was able to see coming what with all the clever misdirections, misinformations, and misunderstandings galore that befell our extended cast and crew. And speaking of which, poor Val Fremden née Valiant Jolly is back, going from catastrophe to catastrophe and sometimes in between landing in jail, too. Now I don't know if dear Valiant (also called Valliant at one point!) is in fact an autobiographical portrayal of our author or not, but damn, she comes across as being so real that it's in all honesty a tad bit spooky. You can't help but feel for her and feel like you know her by the end of these books. And that makes it all just that much more special. You can’t kill off brain cells if you don’t have any.
Seriously though, I think Lashley outdid herself this time around. I've enjoyed a few of her books by now in at least 2 of the series involved. Oh gosh, do I need to go into detail? I remember a possible Mothman, weird shenanigans in an old persons' home, and hammers, but beyond that, well, I think the transitive property of the implied Floridian heat and humidity has affected me and my memory more than juat a bit. But from beginning to end, from bad hairstyles, skin problems galore, and the comfort of a quality brand of adult diapers, this story was just so much damn fun. Did I mention I didn't see ANY OF THAT coming? I did, didn't I? Pfft, if I'm taking too much of your time, put it on my tab, I'll work extra! Maybe it's because you look like Lurch’s psychotic teenage offspring.
The story also gets as close to breaking the fourth wall in spots that you can get without going full-fledged Deadpool. I even felt like at one point I was starting to have a sympathetic allergy attack as well, because even the dang "boutique" where so much of this tale's weirdness takes place is starting to strike me as a living, breathing (+/- … let's call it gasping instead) part of the parade of hilarious players. You know, how it embraces its utter weirdness like that shop that you find in every town in the world that makes you wonder how anyone can afford to keep such a place open owing to a lack of any sustainable businesss at all! Then again, looking at it from a different perspective, it may just be the perfect metaphor (or is it a simile?) for the misfits that populate this well-woven (ahem) look at what seems to be the status quo for all that makes Val, well, herself! Even if she continues to find herself in such situations where she's suspected of murder and incontinence, all in one day! Nothing makes a customer feel more welcome than a naked man with no genitals.
So many oodles of kudos from me! Again, this is a great character-driven mystery that will fool you, fiddle with you(r brain), and strike your funny bone hard enough that you might need a titanium replacement (don't go with the ceramic, they start to squeak after a while)! But now what am I supposed to read? I guess have to go and readjust my reading schedule, dammit… darn funny as hell books making me read too fast… phooey…
