Nejtemnější přání je romantasy standalone od české autorky Pavly Leitgebové, který zaujme především milovníky Griši, Holubice a hada nebo třeba Zlodějského tance. Příběh má všechno – originálně vystavěný svět, magii, politické intriky, jiskření mezi hlavními postavami a především krásně poetický styl psaní, který není úplně běžný.
Musím ale přiznat, že právě styl vyprávění pro mě nebyl úplně jednoduchý – je hodně květnatý, obrazný a místy dost pomalý a navíc tu máme mojí ne úplně oblíbenou - er formu, a proto mi chvíli trvalo se do příběhu opravdu ponořit, a i když mě samotný svět i zápletka bavily, měla jsem občas problém udržet pozornost a čtení mi neplynulo tak snadno, jak bych si přála.
Co ale opravdu musím vyzdvihnout, je systém magie, který byl naprosto originální a krásně promyšlený. Magie tu není zadarmo, každé přání má svou cenu a následky – a právě tenhle prvek mě neskutečně bavil. Bylo osvěžující číst fantasy, kde jsou pravidla magie jasně daná a dávají smysl.
Moc se mi líbilo i zapojení slovanské mytologie, které příběhu dodalo specifickou atmosféru. Připadala jsem si jako v mlhou zahaleném světě plném tajemství, legend a starých příběhů.
Akim i Kasia mě bavili jako dvojice – dvě morálně šedé postavy s vlastními motivacemi a temnou minulostí. Jejich vztah není jen o romantice, ale i o vnitřních konfliktech, pošťuchování a napětí, které mezi nimi hezky fungovalo. Jen je škoda, že jsem si k nim nedokázala vybudovat nějakou hlubší citovou vazbu. Chybělo mi asi něco, co by mě k nim opravdu připoutalo.
Závěrem bych asi řekla, že jestli vás baví romantasy, young adult a máte rádi propracovaný worldbuilding, tohle by vás mohlo zaujmout. Obzvlášť pokud nehledáte úplně lehké čtení, ale spíš něco, co má hloubku a jedinečnou atmosféru.

Jako hrdá víla kmotřička, která měla to potěšení nejprve betovat anglickou verzi textu a pak čest se podílet na redakci českého vydání, si samozřejmě neodpustím tenhle text a v něm spoustu chvály 😁.
Tahle knížka má prostě všechny správné ingredience na to, abych se do ní zamilovala na první přečtení. Smála jsem se, hihňala, uculovala, měla chuť si rvát vlasy, měla často na krajíčku, hltala stránky v očekávání co bude dál... a kdybyste po mě chtěli spočítat, kolikrát jsem u toho úplně prvního čtení (toho betování v AJ) použila emoji ”❤️” tak se nedopočítáme. O to horší pro mě teď asi je sesmolit něco aspoň trochu smysluplného, tedy něco víc než PROSTĚ SI TO VŠICHNI PŘEČTĚTE!, ale pokusím se.

📌 Během čtení jsem napsala, že miluju momenty mezi hlavními postavami, líbí se mi ten svět a jsem chycená zápletkou. Prostě kombinace, která dokáže zaujmout a díky spoustě akce si udržet vaši pozornost. Opravdu si tu hrdinové moc neoddechnou a vy spolu s nimi také ne. Vlastně jsem se i dost obávala jak to skončí a bála se, aby mi pak nezůstaly jen oči pro pláč a jen zlomené srdíčko 💔.
📌 Jestli bych chtěla na Nejtemnějším přání něco fakt vypíchnout, tak je to práce s trope vyvoleného. Chápu, že tenhle koncept (už) není mezi mnoha čtenáři zrovna ten nejoblíbenější, ale tady to vážně stojí za to a neměli byste se tím nechat odradit. Někde mám na toto téma v knížce podtrháno několik citátů 😄.
📌 Atmosféra a slovanská mytologie využité na jedničku! Baba Jaga, rusalka, Nav, zasněžená krajina… krásné popisy, ponořila jsem se do toho (velmi snadno) natolik, že mi vždycky po 10 minutách čtení začalo být chladno ❄️❄️❄️.
📌 Magie, která má svou cenu je můj velmi oblíbený koncept!
📌 Taky osobně strašně cením, že se příběh odehrává v prostředí inspirovaném 19. stoletím, takže tu máte automobil, fotografii, noviny, plynové lampy, vlak, střelné zbraně… aneb žádný těžký středověk, což považuji za osvěžující 👍.
📌 Kasia a Akim mi oba přirostli k srdci. Oba se zachraňují a pomáhají si tak jako navzájem, byť Kasia mi vždycky přišla jako ten tahoun celé výpravy 😄, což bylo vlastně dost osvěžující. Jak se ona čarodějka a dětská vojačka vyzná ve světě zatímco Akima, který byl jako Císař zavřený v paláci, tak trochu táhne s sebou 😅. Jsem pro badass & stabby hrdinky všemi deseti! 🔥❤️⚔️
📌 Jelena je skvělá vedlejší postava a už před těmi lety jsem si říkala, že bych o ní brala spin-off 😄.
📌 Jsem asi jediná fanynka baby Jagy na téhle planetě 🤣🤣🤣, ale... hele, baba Jaga vymyslela social distancing/společenský odstup a bez téhle smrtící babči bychom měli všichni po srandě 🤭.
Máme tu víru/náboženství, země ve válce, Císaře co je předurčený zemřít, trochu bitchy (v tom nejlepším slova smyslu) kacířskou čarodějku, zimní atmosféru, ledovou magii, magii založenou na přáních (a pozor na to, co si přejete)… co jen si přát víc 😄.
PS: Možná jenom toho živého Akima k sobě domů 🤣, zvlášť v těch letních vedrech, která určitě zas přijdou 🥵.

Na to, že jsem od toho nic neočekávala – pecka! Občas to mělo hluchá místa, hlavně ze začátku, ale pak se to začalo číst opravdu dobře, hlavně díky krásné a nápadité atmosféře. Nejvíc mě ale bavilo, že se hlavních rolí ujímají záporné postavy – to je něco nového a zábavného! A rozhodně chci víc takových příběhů!

Knížku jsem měla možnost přečíst s předstihem a za to moc děkuji nakladatelství YA čtu. Moc jsem se na ni těšila, jakmile jsem zjistila, že to má být romantasy.
Nakladatelství YA čtu mám spojené s kvalitní četbou a provedením knihy, a u této jsem nečekala nic víc ani míň.
Nejdřív bych začala tím, že do knihy jděte s tím, že je zaměřená hlavně na romantickou linku, ALE prvních 100 stránek je převážně popis světa a proroctví, které sužuje hlavního hrdinu Akima.
Hlavní postavy Akim a Kasia jsou zajímavé už tím, že jsou oba padouši. Opravdu to nejsou žádní svatoušci, ale jakmile vidíte kapitoly z jejich pohledu, dokážete s nimi sympatizovat. To, že je Akim zrzek, je samozřejmě plus😏!
V knížce se objeví i tak trochu spicy scéna, ale není explicitní. Chemie mezi postavami byla fajn, ale ne tak silná, jakou bych si představovala.
Představovala bych si spíš víc romantických scén nebo scén, kde se hlavní hrdinové „popichují“ a jiskří to mezi nimi. Prosím víc dialogů než popisů😭. Dalo by mi to další důvod, proč bych měla hlavním hrdinům fandit a věřit jejich vztahu. Ale samozřejmě pokud je knížka standalone, není úplně prostor obsáhnout všechno, co si představuju.
Co bych rozhodně pochválila, je propracovaný svět. Připomínal mi sérii Grishaverse. Doporučila bych knížku číst v zimě, pro lepší atmosféru.
Konec se mi líbil. Není to nic přeslazeného, co normálně v romantasy bývá. Je škoda, že je to standalone, protože bych ráda viděla další příběh z tohoto světa, například o Jeleně.
Celkové zpracování miluju! Je vidět, že za knížkou stálo několik lidí. Miluju obálku, různé druhy ořízek, mapu, ilustrace…no prostě všechno.
Dávám 4/5⭐️.

I'M SO GLAD THAT I READ IT
One of my top few fantasy reads for sure!
I love the characters, Akim and Kasia, both are amazingly antagonistic. Their chemistry, bickering, flirtation, all were amazing. The book is so well written.
Love Kasia (fmc), she's definitely a sassy, witty, smart witch who can conquer anything, even the Tsar's frozen heart 🤭
Usually I find fantasy very hard to understand but with this book everything was clearly understandable. This book reeks action, the fights, all the war, blood, added to it's awesomeness. The plot was well put; everything that happened came with passionate reasons.
There's no spice, but I never needed it, their care for each other, saving each other always no matter what, all those precious moments together made my heart full.

Knihu Nejtemnější přání jsem objevila v místní knihovně a hned mě učarovala svým zpracováním. Má naprosto nádhernou obálku a ořízku. Často jsem se při čtení jen kochala zasněženou vesničkou a polární září. Navíc hodně oceňuji, že ačkoliv se mi do ruky dostal paperback, kniha byla krásně poddajná a dala se plně otevřít, aniž bych musela lámat hřbet.
Také jsem si oblíbila svět, ve kterém byl příběh zasazen. Byl promyšlený, ale nebyl zahlcující. Navíc se podobal tomu našemu, jen byl okořeněn trochou magie a mytologie a to je přesně můj šálek kávy.
Ačkoliv jsem čtenář, který si především užívá dialogy postav a popisy prostředí vnímám jen tak matně, tak tady tady můj mozek nastartoval a naladil se na popisy autorky. Obrazy zasněžené krajiny byly popsány naprosto věrohodně. Kolikrát jsem měla pocit, že když kouknu z okna uvidím padající vločky a bílé kopce. Tahle kniha by se měla začít číst nejlépe na začátku ledna s horkým nápojem v ruce.
Hlavní postavy mi byly sympatické, ale bohužel jsem si k nim nedokázala vybudovat hlubší pouto. Fandila jsem jim, ale nestrhlo mě to. Ani jsem mezi nimi necítila chemii. Víc chemie jsem cítila mezi Akimem a jeho sestrou 🙈 Jednu chvíli jsem si říkala, proč se tihle dva milují? Z jakého důvodu? Vždyť spolu ani moc nekomunikují. A když už docházelo ke komunikaci, tak byla pro mě zvláštní. Často jsem se v ní ztrácela a vůbec jsem nechápala jejich pohnutky nebo proč reagovali, tak jak reagovali. Někdy jsem nechápala i jejich myšlení, prvně je Kasia naštvaná, že ji Akim zachránil, a že se měl pro list knihy vydat sám bez ní, aby za pár desítek stran přemýšlela nad tím, že Akima nemůže nechat jít pro list samotného, protože by to bez ní nezvládl.
Trošku jsem se i ztrácela ve schopnostech obou hlavních postav. Chvíli byli total badass, pak se najednou nechají oba zajmout, ačkoliv mají list knihy u sebe. Co je tedy víc? Ten samý pocit jsem měla s jejich zraněními. Přišlo mi, že jejich zranění byla nekonzistentní. Chvíli na ně umírali, aby druhý den byli ok.
Celkově ale smekám před autorkou, protože napsat takovouto knihu, je faaaakt hustý! 🤩

Ten samý pocit jsem měla s jejich zraněními. Přišlo mi, že jejich zranění byla nekonzistentní. Chvíli na ně umírali, aby druhý den byli ok.
Celkově ale smekám před autorkou, protože napsat takovouto knihu, je faaaakt hustý! 🤩

This standalone fantasy romance is a refreshing take on both the genre and the chosen one trope. Instead of the medieval ages, it is set in a sort of industrial era with cars and guns, and the lore and world building is based on Slavic folklore from what I gathered, it all making it quite a new experience for me. I’d love to spend more time in this world and with these characters (I need a Yelena spin off asap). The writing and world building was nice, it worked in a rather show don’t tell fashion which I appreciated tho at times I did feel a bit lost but it kept me engaged and I immediately liked the MCs. There aren’t many other characters besides them in most of the book but it doesn’t feel empty. Their relationship is complex and thoroughly moves the plot. I’d say there’s a bit of spice (0.5/5🌶️) and I wouldn’t have minded a bit more but it wasn’t full on close door and it was nicely approached and not just spice for the sake of it.

Tak tohle bylo boží a jsem strašně moc ráda, jakou péči a lásku takhle skvělému příběhu v Ya čtu dali! A snad poprvé mě mrzí, že jde o standalone...😓❤️
Příběh Akima a Kasie si mě získal hnedka po pár stranách. Troufám si říct, že jde o hodně "mood reading", jelikož mi celou dobu bylo chladno a přišla jsem si jako na místě, v mokrých lesích, ulicích a studené krčmě. Možná to je tím, že je celým příběhem protkaná slovanská mytologie. 😍
To bylo opravdu perfektní, stejně tak jako autročin styl psaní, který mě u knihy udržel skoro nepřerušovaně. Celkově mi kniha dávala vibe Nelítostného lovce/Holubice a hada, což jsou dvě knihy, co miluju a o to víc se mi ta kombinace se slovanskou mytologií z pera české autorky líbila. A milým překvapením pro mě bylo to, že knihu vydala i v angličtině! 😍🥹
Akim a Kasia byli naprosto skvělí. Nejenom, že oba jsou svým způsobem záporáci, ale to, jak jsou oba neskutečně silní, badass, vtipní a takový od rány..To mě strašně bavilo, hlavně, když byli spolu. Chemie mezi nimi byla dost uvěřitelná a když jsem knihu dočetla, bylo mi líto, že jejich příběh nemá pokračování. 🥹💜
Byli totiž fakt boží. Svět byl moc fajn, ale pro mě asi trošku chaotický a vlastně bych možná ocenila delší úvod a nějaké "větší" vysvětlení, jak funguje. Nicméně co si mě získalo byl zpsůob, jakým člověk dělá "magii". To bylo absolutně boží a škoda, že to nefunguje, haha.✨🥰
Tuhle fantasy vám ale můžu neskutečně doporučit. Je to milé pohlazení, u kterého se zasmějete a budete strašně moc postavám fandit. A jako třešničkou na dortu je ten naprosto nádherný vizuál, s vymazlenou ořízkou.😍💜

If I convince at least one person to read this hidden gem, I can die in peace.
I am avid audiobook listener and I read like 1 book with my eyes every year. Also being Czech, I almost never read books in Czech. I found traslations cringy and I feel like there is no quality reading for genres I actually like. This being said, The Deadliest Wish is basically my only chance to support Czech writer, since it's written in English. And boy, did I choose my once-a-year read well.
What I liked:
- Let's start with Kasia and Akim. Some would say they are morally greay, I would say the are realistic. Their motivations come from their past and things that happend to them. They were forced to make some pretty hard choices during their life and it shows on their personalities. Pavla should give masterclass on character creation because for me, this is where the book trully shined.
- The plot is very straight forward. Akim is trying to break propercy foretelling his death by hald of The Chosen One and Kasia is the one who should help him. I have to admit, I saw the plot twish comming from mile away but did I care?
- I absolutely loved how beaten up Kasia and Akim get during the story. No superhero moments, pure abuse of the road and wounds from encouters to come. I trully appreciated this, it made their story much more realistic.
- Magic system and the Slavic inspiration were trully the cherry on top.
- How Kasia and Akim came from enemies to reluctant alies to friends to lovers.
What I didn't like:
- I have only one compalint and that's the overuse of titles. Maybe it's the curse of being written in Third Person. The witch, the heretic, the heretic with, the tsar, the young tsar, the Silver Devil... I get it but for me it was too much.

The Deadlist Wish was a very good fantasy read! This is a e-arc review, and I would mostly rate this a 4.5 star on Storygraph. 4 star in goodreads. This was a slow start for me to read, but in the end of the book it got better. Mostly being that the fantasy was thought out, but there isn`t a terminology page for the needed terms and phrases. Kasia and Akim are amazing antagonistical protagonists. Akim being a false ruler while Kasia being a hysterical prophet. They were fleshed out really well in this book. I don`t even know if there was magical elements or not- but there was some. I like this book because it was mostly character based lore, and backstory, as well as the hint of spice. Anyway- it was really really well written, and their banter for this adventure was so good! I love this, good luck on your debut Pavla Leitgebova!

This book is a classic example of Romantacy. There are two povs, so we know exactly what both our heroes are thinking.
What i liked the most about the book, was the characters, they are both heroes and at the same time villains, they are enemies who can’t stop saving each other.
As a reader I am always drown to stories that feel like they are inventible, like the characters have always been destined to find each other. Also I really liked the premises of the plot, it reminded me a lot of Shadow and Bone and it kept me at the edge of my seat until the very end.
There was some really good dialogues and i found myself always hightlighting points because this author is gonna give us some great things,i am sure of it.

First of all, a big shout-out and thank you to the author for sending me an ARC copy of her debut novel. I’ve been following Pavla for some time and it’s been really inspiring to see her on her journey, as an aspiring writer myself. That said, I had a lot of good expectations and hopes with this book based on what I’ve seen, and the consensus is that, for the most part: yes, it definitely offered something a bit more refreshing, tasteful, and well-crafted that would deliver itself right into readers’ hearts.
But, it is my obligation to give a honest review. So let’s get to it.
I really appreciated that the book fulfilled on the promises of it’s cliches, and yet there has been an attempt to subvert these tropes and give readers a fresh take, which is something I love to see in stories nowadays when tropes have taken over the market. And I can safely say it’s one of the better things of this book that I thought were extremely well-done. The other thing I also really enjoyed was the dark, alluring magic system based on spirits and old gods and blood sacrifices, wonderfully giving the story a touch of wonder but also great foreboding that imbues the story with a gritty charm that I absolutely eat up every time.
Coming from someone who has a special soft spot for stories and settings like Shadow & Bone, I had the strong sense The Deadliest Wish would be able to fulfil on that promise. And I was not disappointed. From the glimpses we get early on about the royal Zimak court (where our favourite Tsar Akim rules from), to the ever-closing backdrop of the war, and even the very dangerous, dark grey land of enemy Swizz, really helped to set the world-stakes for these characters and to reinforce the, well, driving forces, for the story; whether it’s politics, religion, or something else.
But that’s what a lot of those elements felt like to me: glimpses. I am a fierce plot and world-building enthusiast, and I felt for a Romantasy, I personally felt the development of the romance and the characters by that extension took the largest focus, with the plot and the world coming back at fuller force when it calls for it. Akim felt really compelling and truly, deeply complex as a character for me; while Kasia was a bit too shrouded in the mystery for me to have really connected with her, and so whenever they get themselves into their more flirtatious, scandalous scenes after another fight sequence (there’s a lot of scenes in the middle that follow this format, which did feel repetitive at times), I couldn’t fully immerse myself into their banter, or when they switch to talking about deeper, emotional topics. Which I felt really sorry about because Kasia was set-up to be a richly complex, tricky character that would have you cheering her on but also begging her to stop when she’s up to her usual tricks, and I at least felt I couldn’t get the full experience of that.
I felt that even though Kasia’s mystery is a big part of her character early on, a lot of details just came later as it’s nearing the point of being utilised for an upcoming plot beat. And so I felt as if she and Akim were just moving at very different paces throughout the story until they crash together, walk hand-in-hand, before the cycle repeats itself again, and that kinda took me out at times when I’m trying to see how they will further the plot and open up the world to us.
The thing is that I don’t even believe the story/world is lacking/hasn’t been given enough focus; I think it just *reads* as lacking, as a result of the story and world only coming in at it’s cues instead of being a consistent thread from beginning to end.
Despite all that, however, I think there is a stronger quality to this book than there is with a lot of similar stories being churned out today. If I felt the storytelling was not my favourite, the writing definitely helped put a nice spin to the narrative, never failing to keep me flipping page after page effortlessly (bar the peppering of grammar and punctuation errors but we will forego that, as this is an ARC), and I have to give credit where credit is due.
If you’re into quick and easy Romantasies that still don’t hold back from the gore and violence, you’ll definitely like The Deadliest Wish, especially if you are more concerned over the romance aspect, in my opinion (it does get just the nice amount of steamy without being *steamy*). At the end of the day, the writing was polished and definitive, the premise remains as compelling as the war-torn world and magic is fascinating, and reading it really cemented just how much attention and dedication the author funnelled into this book, which I think makes it a book worth reading. If not to give Pavla the honest praise she deserves, then let’s do it for Akim Anslav himself, who has definitely made a strong impression on me long after the book is done, and I suspect it’ll be same for everyone else.

Akim played the arrogant emperor who didn’t take anyone’s help very well, until he goes to Kasia and all his expectations are thrown out the window. She is sexy, smart, dangerous, and witty, and it takes everything for Akim to keep his composure around her. I kept forgetting they were in the middle of a war and trying to stay alive and undo a whole damn prophecy because I was so focused on the two of them. There’s secrets and twists and lies but they stick together through it all. The ending had me clutching my seat! You know when there’s 10% left of the book and you have NO IDEA where it’s going??? Yeah that was me.

První romantasy z nakladatelství YA čtu nasadilo laťku vysoko. Fakt nekecám 💙🫶🏻. Bohužel i když mě příběh bavil, byl nabitý akcí (někdy až moc) a druhá polovina knihy mě opravdu pohltila, mám tu svá ale, kvůli kterým nemohu dát plný počet hvězd. Kniha je psaná v třetí osobě, což byl můj první problém. To byl i jeden z důvodů, proč mi trvalo něco kolem 80 stran, abych se opravdu začetla. Zpočátku jsem hlavním hrdinům ani nebaštila tu jejich chemii. Další ale se vylouplo ve třetí třetině a jediné, co k tomu řeknu, aniž bych vyzradila cokoli z děje, je "světlice"... A poslední problém, který jsem s knihou měla, byla za mě až rušivá podobnost s pohádkou Mrazík. Já vím, že je tam slovanská mytologie, ale jména a prostředí a občas i ty bytosti (baba Jaga) mi dávaly dojem až moc východní Evropy, což mi v této době dvakrát nešmakuje 😅. Většinou jde ale pouze o mé subjektivní preference, které samozřejmě spoustě dalších lidí vadit nemusí. I can't believe this is the author's debut novel! 🖤
The story alternates between two POVs. Kasia, the fierce and power-hungry witch, defies her destiny as a hero to carve her own dark path 🫀.
On the other hand, Akim, the ruthless and cursed emperor with a (literal) frozen heart, faces a prophecy that foretells his death as the only way to end an endless war—a fate he rejects 🫣.
The first 150 pages are a bit slow, focusing more on the characters, but Kasia and Akim are so fascinating that you won't mind. Once you reach the 150-page mark, the pace quickens, and you'll find yourself unable to put the book down. There isn't a single boring or dull moment.

The story alternates between two POVs. Kasia, the fierce and power-hungry witch, defies her destiny as a hero to carve her own dark path 🫀.
On the other hand, Akim, the ruthless and cursed emperor with a (literal) frozen heart, faces a prophecy that foretells his death as the only way to end an endless war—a fate he rejects 🫣.
The first 150 pages are a bit slow, focusing more on the characters, but Kasia and Akim are so fascinating that you won't mind. Once you reach the 150-page mark, the pace quickens, and you'll find yourself unable to put the book down. There isn't a single boring or dull moment.

•Už od doby co @yactu leakli jejich novou knížku, tedy spíš její popis, mě lákala. Ale poté vyšla mě už lákat nějak přestala haha🙈😂
•Knížka mě přišla trošku složitější, stylem psaní, ale to je pro fantasy za mně typické. Ten nádech slovanské historie a obecně ten svět jsem si rychle zamilovala.
•Přišlo mi to hodně jako taková deep a dark pohádka. Taková moje definice této knihy.
•Ale upřímně ani jednu postavu jsem si neoblíbila, a nebylo to proto, že oba byli ,,záporáci".

I don’t know if I can be serious writing this review, because the truth is I’m screaming, crying, throwing up even thinking about The Deadliest Wish. When you devour 80% of a novel to then procrastinate finishing it, that’s when you know it’s good shit.
There isn’t a single thing I didn’t adore. The story never needed cheap plot twists to surprise me, because every scene hooked me and flowed into the next so seamlessly. It was always engaging and fast-paced, while leaving breathing room for the characters to bloom on the page.
Speaking of the characters, the two protagonists, Akim and Kasia, hold my heart. They’re broken people finding a home in each other, on a quest for a happy ending the world is hellbent on denying them. And on every single line, I was rooting for them. I love them both on their own and together they not only magnify their personalities, but also fit perfectly. There’s no other way to put this: I’m simply feral over their romance, the delicious chemistry, and how they protect and fight for one another.
I’m getting repetitive, but there’s a limit to the synonyms for “love” I can find, so here it is. As someone who has a keen interest in Slavic cultures, I loved the setting. Even though we don’t delve much into the world, the author paints it vividly with a few brushstrokes. Descriptions are also when the more poetic end of the writing style shines through — it’s usually crystalline like water, just to pounce and hit you with a breathtaking line or a gut punch that carves a hole into your heart.
The only reason this review won’t go on forever is that words can’t make this novel justice. The Deadliest Wish is the kind of book you infodump about to a friend in a 10 minute voice message. So read it and we can do just that.

But regardless, this was so much fun to read and I cannot believe it does not have more reads and reviews in it. For fans of mythologies of all cultures, this one takes us on one drawn with inspiration from Slavic roots.
We get a dual POV story with a Prince who teams up with a heretic witch to try and prevent everything from going to pots- even more than it probably has seemed to be in the area. The characters are well developed, have great banter between each other, and the pacing is well done.
But regardless, this was so much fun to read and I cannot believe it does not have more reads and reviews in it. For fans of mythologies of all cultures, this one takes us on one drawn with inspiration from Slavic roots.

This is exactly what I want when going for Romantasy! Deep, complex characters and an intriguing conflict that makes me care for them. Kasia and Akim are exactly that – both deeply scarred people who are interesting to follow through this Slavic-inspired world.
Btw, this is one of the few books that don't mess up this setting with giving men female versions of surnames or misuse of real words (looking at you, "Shadow and Bone"). Not that I would've expected anything like that from this author.
I cannot but admire the interesting twists this brought to the very overused Chosen One trope. Going further than only introducing a reluctant hero, "The Deadliest Wish" shows how much the great hero, the chosen one, can be a victim theirself, abused on the basis of their foretold great fate. To me it made way more sense than all the versions in which they're only worshipped. A person seemingly able to fulfill what so many wish for automatically ends up as a tool.
It was only near the end that I started to realize as much as I loved Kasia and Akim as leads that they were not...quite ENOUGH to carry the entire book. Throughout the story we get glimpses of a bunch of intriguing characters like the soldier Miroslava, Yara, Akim's sister Yelena, Analissa and her daughter, or even the Swizz General who remain underused sometimes. I understand that this is not supposed to be that kind of epic fantasy with huge cast, but yet I would've loved more of the characters to be fleshed out, have greater impact, and tell us more about this world that could've been explored more. And probably expand on the motif of choosing your own destiny.
But that might be a personal preference as I'm not usually a Romantasy reader and exactly enjoy bigger casts and going deeper into the politics.
What bugged me sometimes were the errors. For example, switching "mayor" and "major" a couple of times or "Azdehay" and "Azdehaya", and so on. I know this is self-published and obviously the author put very much effort into this book to achieve overall high quality, but it could've benefited from another round of editing.
However, the only thing I really couldn't bring myself to like was the third act drama. I was very hopeful that this book would pull it off, after all...but to me it seemed that it was just the wrong moment to reveal the final twist. Huge spoiler:
It made Akim not only look so over the top paranoid that it wasn't believable anymore, but rather foeced, and thus took away from the potential impact.
I think the promotion on Instagram also made me expect the protagonists to be way more villainous, while they were in fact acting mostly humane and reasonable in the framework of the horrible situations they get into. So, I probably wouldn't call this a "villain romance". In a world of abused child soldiers and manipulating common folk into dying for a cult, two people just wanting to live their life unbothered and end the cruel war still seem like heroes. Even if some deem them to be the evil ones. So if you want to read a full blown villain romance? This might not be for you. If you want two morally grey people, who are good at heart though, this is the perfect choice.
All in all, I truly enjoyed it. The characters won my heart and the writing style perfectly captures the dark magic of the world. I definitely wouldn't mind if there were ever another novel set in the wintry world of Zimak!

Představte si svět, kde má magie svou cenu, která není jen symbolická. Přesně takový vymyslela Pavla Leitgebová ve své romantasy novince Nejtemnější přání. Kniha původně vyšla v anglickém jazyce, ale YA čtu se postarali o český překlad jako součást nového boxu.

Ocitáme se v chladné zemi, kde řadí válka, boj o moc a křivdy. Zimácký císař Akim má být obětován, aby válka skončila - takový osud mu byl předurčen, ale on s ním nesouhlasí. Rozhodne se vyhledat kacířskou čarodějku Kasiu, aby mu s bojem proti osudu pomohla. Oba mají své vlastní důvody, proč se vydat na cestu a oba také skrývají temnou minulost, která je poznamenala. Jakou cenu jsou ochotní zaplatit za změnu proroctví?

Autorka si skvěle pohrává se slovanskou mytologií. Servíruje temnou, dospělou pohádku, kde nic není zadarmo a jen bílé nebo černé. Co se mi opravdu líbilo je důslednost, na které je world building postavený. Všechno musí být v rovnováze, každé přání něco stojí a nese sebou následky.

Dynamika mezi hlavními postavami byla skvělá. Máme tady věčné pošťuchování, vzájemnou provokaci, ale také momenty plné smíchu i pochyb. V tomto světě navíc nikdo není neporazitelný, hrdinové krvácí, selhávají a často i dělají špatné rozhodnutí. Tohle jim ale jen dodávalo na lidskosti.

Co mě ovšem na knize mrzelo, bylo to, jak jsou Akim a Kasia oba vykreslení jako záporáci. Rozhodně jsou na pomezí morálně šedých postav, ale na mě oba působili jenom jako rozbité duše. Mají nějakou svoji pověst, kterou vytvořili hlavně lidé různými povídačkami a ta je pronásleduje jako temný stín. Chyběl mi u nich ale ten pravý villain vibe, kdy k nim čtenář pocítí i trošku nenávist a bude nad jejich rozhodováním kroutit hlavou. Oba byli naopak hrozní miláčci a já jim celou dobu fandila. Možná udělali pár rozhodnutí, které by nebyly hodné hrdinů, ale právě jen v mezích šedé zóny.

Celkově je Nejtemnější přání skvělý romantasy příběh s perfektně zpracoványm světem, skvěle napsanými postavami a hlavně obrovskou morálně šedou zónou. Autorka vytvořila opravdu skvělý příběh, u kterého si bude spousta čtenářů zoufat, že se jedná o standalone.

I was sent an ARC copy of Pavla Leitgebova’s debut novel, “The Deadliest Wish.” My review for this will be as honest as it would be for any other book (spoiler-free, of course).
“The Deadliest Wish” is a Romantasy book filled with twists, ice, dark magic, and romance. The main characters offer a delightful change from your typical hero trope, leading to more nuance within the story than one might expect. Within the world of the book, magic is well-explained while remaining mysterious and the Slavic-inspired setting creates something new for readers to enjoy.
I found the opening of the book to be a bit slow, but once the story got going and pieces fell into place, I found myself not wanting to stop reading. This book is not for the faint of heart, filled with blood and dark magic, both of which create a compelling narrative. While “The Deadliest Wish” is a Romantasy novel, the focus remains mostly on the romance between our two villains. Despite that, the world around them is well-fleshed out and feels as though it could be a real place.
While I do hold high amounts of praise for this book, a few things did leave me a little disappointed. The book was filled with all sorts of twists, but some of them seemed a bit contrived, especially the meaning behind the title. I found the end to be satisfying, but the epilogue seemed like a last-minute addition filled with information that I as a reader would have preferred to imagine on my own.
