A room behind a bookcase. An old key. A secret letter. When my mother died suddenly, I wanted answers, but I never in a million years would have guessed that my mother’s cryptic instructions to go to Bell Hollow would change the course of my life. First, I was attacked my a wolfman. Then three gorgeous women showed up on my doorstep claiming to be witches who control the elements. Then there was the mysterious Griffin, a shifter who I felt more pulled to than I understood…As evil seeps through the portal, I face a choice. Can I master elemental powers to save Bell Hollow? Will Griffin and I unite as foretold by prophecy? In a world where magic and destiny collide, the stakes have never been higher. Bell Hollow's fate rests on my decision, reshaping not just my destiny, but an entire realm's.
3.75/5 rounded up. A witchy novella by a polynesian author? Yes please!
This scratched the itch on my soul from watching Halloweentown as a child! This was a quick and entertaining read following our main girl Jade as she discovers that she, like her late mother, is a witch. She travels to her mother's hometown which is a town full of magical beings! This is where the Halloweentown bit comes in, but make it adult. There's witches, leprechauns, shifters, ogres, werewolves, and more! There are also humans who don't know about the presence of magic, and our main cast of characters aim to keep it that way to protect the humans from uncertain evil that is lurking (dun dun dunnn).
My biggest critique of this book is that it's too short! I liked Jade's perspective, enjoyed the other characters, and liked the storyline. But the plot moved too quickly, there was no room to learn more about our cast of characters, or to learn more about Jade's past and background. I would've loved a couple flashbacks from her childhood with her mom that gives you some glimpses into her magical abilities as she grows up. You know? Like mabye she felt stifled living in a big city but never knew why, maybe she was a barefoot child and loved helping her mother in the garden, maybe her mother told her "fairytales" that weren't actually fairytales. I think that would've added a lot of depth and improved the reader's connection to Jade.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed spending time in this world and can't wait to read the remaining books in the series!
A short story intense and unpredictable storyline. It is about a women finding out she is a witch. She travels to her mother's hometown which is a town full of magical beings! There's witches, shifters, ogres, werewolves, and more! There are also humans who don't know about the presence of magic, and our main cast of characters aim to keep it that way to protect the humans from uncertain evil things. Jade is the key with the others three elemental witches and they needed to fix or close a portal in the town she never heard of. She has a strong connection to a new guy and the other witches. The plot moved too quickly. Overall I enjoyed spending time in this world and can't wait to read the remaining books in the series!
4.5 -> I really enjoyed this book and am excited to continue the series. It was fast paced, a FMC in her 30’s, witches, shifters and other magical creatures. And as a Polynesian woman, I really appreciated the Polynesian characters.
My only wish would’ve been a longer time for the FMC and MMC to develop their feelings, but because of the length of the book and the reason they felt so pulled to each other, it didn’t bother me so much.
Unknown magic! In this fast paced short story are interesting adult characters, an intense and unpredictable storyline. It is about a women finding out she is a witch. One of four Elemental witches needed to close a portal in a town she never heard of. She has a great connection to a new guy and the other witches. Looking forward to book 2.
